Your park needs you!
Call for volunteers to plant 15,000 seedlings Lambton Park users would have noticed plenty of public works activity in and around the Ker-rai (Creek) recently. It’s all part of a rehabilitation project for the stretch of creek that runs from the culvert near the playground extending downstream to the Bowling Club. The project will culminate in late October with the planting of 15,000 seedlings by community volunteers to revegetate the creek’s banks. The project came about when local resident and Ward 3 Councillor Andrea Rufo brought the state of the creek to Council’s attention. From there he has been instrumental in bringing the stakeholders together.
Councillor Andrea Rufo invites the community to help plant 15,000 seedlings along the creek that runs through Lambton Park In keeping with the existing heritage sandstone blocks that the creek flows over, the rehabilitation work is being undertaken by Soil
Conservation Service on behalf of Hunter Water Corporation. The work is expected to protect the Ker-rai from (continued page 2)

The mass planting of seedlings over three days 22nd to 24th October is being overseen and managed by CityServe. CityServe is a unique initiative that embraces collaborative working partnerships between council, business and community organisations to benefit the community. A group of 150 students and staff from Hunter Christian College plus staff from Newcastle Permanent will kick off the plantings on Thursday 22nd October. On 23rd October up to 30 students and teachers from Lambton High School will be joined by members of Lambton Residents Group and other community members that would like to volunteer. Volunteers for Saturday 24th October are also welcome. Once the planting is completed volunteers will carry out other park maintenance tasks such as the painting of park tables and seating. Let’s back our Jet Libby Libby Copus-Brown of Lambton can’t wait until the 2015/16 W-League season kicks off in late October. The former Lambton Jaffa has made her mark in the mid-field for the Newcastle Jets Women’s squad in recent years and is looking forward to kicking her career into the next stage. As you would imagine, participating in a National competition over 12 home and away rounds like the Westfield W-League can be costly. With this in mind the Jets can offer inexpensive sponsorship options to Lambton businesses.
Other than directly helping Libby to offset some of the associated costs such as travel expenses, the benefits of becoming a Player Partner are many. They include an authentic signed Jets jersey, an appearance by Libby at a business or corporate event, ten tickets to each Newcastle Jets home game, ground announcements at home games, recognition in match day programs and more. Any local business that would like to find out more about sponsoring Libby are encouraged to contact her mum Anna on 0428 593318 or via email at: annacopus2006@hotmail.co.uk

Thoroughly busy time for student actors Hunter School of the Performing Arts (HSPA) students Nick Hamilton of Lambton and Juliette Coates of New Lambton have plenty to keep them busy right now. Having just completed their Year 11 exams they are preparing to enter the all-important final year of their high school education. Not only that but they have auditioned for and accepted the lead roles in this year’s school musical. HSPA at Lambton Rd Broadmeadow is a fully auditioned school catering for students from Years 3-12. Students specialise in music, drama and dance as well as studying a comprehensive traditional school curriculum. In term four of each year HSPA presents a musical of an extremely high standard, alternating between the Primary and Secondary departments. This year it is the turn of the secondary students who will be presenting the light hearted, lively Thoroughly Modern Millie. Juliette plays the eponymous Millie Dillmount, a
small town girl looking to make her way and find a wealthy businessman husband in New York City in 1922. Nick plays the role of penniless paperclip salesman Jimmy Smith of whom Millie is fond. The staff and students at HSPA pride themselves on high quality productions and Millie’s fun script, lively musical numbers and amazing sets are sure to impress. The season runs from Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th October with a daytime and an evening performance daily. For further information call HSPA on 4952 3355 or go to www. hspa.nsw.edu.au/ Opposite page: Year 11 Hunter School of Performing Arts students Nick Hamilton and Juliette Coates run through some lines prior to a rehearsal for the school’s production of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Above: the Lambton Junior Striders crew before a recent run. Local families are welcome to join in. There’s no doubt that running for fun and fitness has become more and more popular in recent years. What’s clear is that you don’t need to be an elite athlete to enjoy it. All you need is to lace up your shoes, go outside and start moving. It was with this simple philosophy in mind that local mum and runner Leigh Tickle formed Lambton Junior Striders recently. Lambton Junior Striders is a casual running group for kids (and parents) of all ages to learn to love running and outdoor exercise generally. “So far we’ve been running one lap of Lambton Park, which is about 1.6km, a 1-miler in the old measure. There’s no pressure to run at any particular pace. Parents are encouraged to run with their kids at the child’s pace.” Leigh said. “We operate a stopwatch over the lap so the kids find out their time at the end. So far each runner at each session has brought their time down from their previous effort. The look on the kids’ faces when the hear their time is priceless. They all feel like champions for having improved on their previous time” Leigh added. Lambton Junior Striders meet near the rotunda at 5.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays during school term and everyone is welcome to join in. Call Leigh on 0422 320 731 or like the Lambton Junior Striders page on Facebook for more information.

Lambton then, Lambton now Lambton Park
Next month will be the 125th anniversary of the opening of the rotunda in Lambton Park in 1890. The park itself is older, and had a very uncertain beginning. The main difficulty was that much of the land east of Morehead St through to Hamilton was the “Newcastle Pasturage Reserve” or “Commonage”. Many people had built in this area without having any legal title to the land under their houses. As early as 1871 Lambton Council was making application to the Minister for Lands to have some of the Commonage dedicated as a Park, however the legal uncertainties meant that nothing happened for years. The current site of Lambton Park began to be developed as a recreation ground about 1877, but without it being officially gazetted, the council and residents were reluctant to invest much time, money or effort into the park. Frustration at years of government inaction finally came to a head in June 1883. At a public meeting, Mayor Thomas Croudace led the way in addressing
by Lachlan Wetherall
the principal problem of what to do with the residents who had built houses on the park site. He offered cheap sites in a new subdivision between Pearson and Kendall streets, arranged for financial compensation, and even the physical relocation of their houses. The offer must have been good, for two weeks later the paper was reporting that ... “The work of removing houses from the proposed Recreation Reserve is still going on, under the supervision of his Worship the Mayor of Lambton, who has a large staff of men, together with teams of horses, engaged in the work. Four have now been removed bodily on rollers; their appearance and transit through the streets is a novelty and causes quite a sensation.” Eventually 43 houses were moved, development of the park then progressed rapidly, and its future was finally assured when the government gazetted the land as a public park in May 1887. An itchy business
Do you struggle to keep your pet flea-free all year round? Although many people assume that fleas thrive during the summertime in our beautiful Australian climate, they do remain active all year, making our pets itchy and uncomfortable. Fleas are the number one cause of skin allergies in cats and dogs and can cause other health problems such as bacterial infections, anaemia and tapeworm infections. Flea eggs and pupae can remain dormant in environments such as the garden, or in your carpet and furniture, until the conditions are favourable to hatch. From there they need to find a host on which to feed, including pets and other wildlife. Fleas are tiny, dark brown parasitic insects that infest the coat and skin of pets. One of the first signs of a flea infestation is that your pet will be scratching and seem quite irritated, especially around the base of the tail or backs of their hind legs. For a closer look, part your pet’s fur and see whether you may can identify adult fleas on the skin. However fleas can be quite elusive, so it is more likely that you will find flea dirt, which looks like small black specks of grit, similar to finely ground pepper.

The answer to a flea-free pet is simple - prevention all year round. Remember that fleas breed at a phenomenal rate - 10 adult fleas can multiply to more than 250,000 fleas in only 30 days! When looking for your ideal parasite prevention, speak to one of our helpful team members, to help select the product best suited for you and your pet. There are plenty of options! Treating all pets in the household and their environment is vital to reduce the chances of flea eggs and pupae in and around your home. This may necessitate hiring a professional pesticide company, regular vacuuming of your floors, washing pet’s bedding and blankets and spraying your garden with appropriate insecticides. Insuring your life, the natural way and healthy living can lead to higher-quality time together with those you care about, meaning more time away from things that can cause you stress. Such a lifestyle also keeps you off the lounge and office chair. Life insurance by Gary Croese B.Bus (Acc.), CPA, FPS. Principal of GC Accountants
A healthy lifestyle is a smart investment in the future, not only for you but also for your family. What does science say an individual can do to improve their chances of longevity? Your Diet Red meat consumption has been connected with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, but the link is not so simple. Studies from Harvard University found that people who eat more processed red meats (such as sausages, salami, bacon, cold cuts) are likely to experience a higher incidence of heart disease, stroke and death. Unprocessed red meats, such as quality cuts of beef, pork and lamb, have been shown to cause just a slightly higher risk of heart disease. So avoiding processed red meat and limiting unprocessed red meat, whilst ensuring your diet includes a mix of fruit, nuts, fish, poultry, vegetables and whole grain products, is a very good start. Get out and about The human body is made to move and when it does not, issues such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease become more prevalent. According to Better Health Victoria, regular exercise also helps to manage weight, lower blood cholesterol, lower blood pressure, strengthen bones and muscles, increase energy and improve mood. Exercise can even be an important factor in the battle against depression.
Life insurance is a good method of providing immediate, real and measurable cover for your loved ones. OH NO….you have an injury
It can happen so easily and all of a sudden you seem to have the perfect excuse for not exercising…….You have an injury. Now I am not here to tell you to keep training through the pain (in fact I strongly recommend against this) but I will tell you that your whole exercise routine does not have to be thrown out the window. I myself have been dealing with an injury for the last couple of months and it has reminded me how frustrating it can be. It actually got me quite down but I picked myself up, sought the help I needed and found ways to exercise without aggravating it. Now unless you have a very serious injury and are told not to exercise at all by a medical professional then I would recommend these simple tips…. • The first step and most important is to get it checked out by a medical professional. Now this seems like common sense but you would be surprised how many people don’t. The sooner you see a medical professional the easier it will be to fix. • Next step…..Act on your medical professional’s advice. So many people sort help but then do not act on the information given. If you want the injury to heal you need to follow the advice given. • Make an exercise plan. The simplest way is to exercise around it. So if it is an upper body injury concentrate on the lower body and vice versa. This is where a good personal trainer comes in handy because they can come up with a workout plan that will keep you moving while the letting the injury to heal. • Lastly give it time to heal. I know it can be frustrating but we need to let it heal before you get back into your training 100%. You don’t want to do more damage and be out for even longer. My final word of advice is that you only get one body for a lifetime. We need to look after it and do the right thing by it. Do this and your body will reward you by letting you lead a healthy and active lifestyle. So until next time…..Love life, dream big and become the inspiration Anne-Marie

The isolation of depression
The official diagnosis of depression is called Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). I listed its symptoms in last month’s edition. However, many people can have what we call a sub-syndromal version of depression where they don’t quite meet all the necessary requirements for the official diagnosis (a good thing), but experience many of the symptoms to a lesser degree. One well-known depression scale is the Clinical Epidemiology Scale Depression-Revised (CESD-R) which has twenty questions and divides the illness up into four categories of symptom intensity: no depression, mild, moderate or severe. It looks at the major symptoms that I spoke of in September and measures how often you have been experiencing them over the last week or fortnight. Of course, such a scale is not the same thing as a clinical diagnosis, but it can be helpful to confirm the thought, “I am really struggling and it doesn’t seem to be going away” and encourage you to seek help from a professional. You can do the CESD-R online for free at http://cesd-r.com . In my experience, one of the first things that people with a depression do is to isolate themselves. “I don’t want to be around people. I don’t want to talk to people. And I don’t want people to see me this way”. I call it ‘going into the cave’. Once in the cave, we typically start to unplug or disengage from all the things that usually would make us happy. Gardening, playing guitar, exercising, reading, seeing friends, my hobby? I stop doing them. It is important as a first step towards health to come out of the cave and to start doing some of these things again, even if I don’t feel like it.
