Land O’ Lakes gets a new brewery By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

In the Loop Brewing is ready for beer lovers to belly up to the bar. The craft brewery, in a renovated twostory house, and an outdoor beer garden, along the shores of Lake Padgett, is the setting for the newest addition to the craft beer scene in Pasco County. It is the dream-come-true for three friends who spent weekends in a garage on Cherbourg Loop, brewing beer that got kudos from friends. Now, Mark Pizzurro, Peter Abreut and Joe Traina are inviting the neighborhood to share in the hoppy pleasures of craft brew at In the Loop, at 3338 Land O’ Lakes Blvd.

“It’s been a good, solid opening,” said Traina.“We’re meeting neighbors and making new friends.” On a recent afternoon, Traina poured brews for first arrivals to In the Loop. “It’s amazing and exciting to have a local place that harkens back to the old-fashioned bar,” said Steve Flom, who was visiting family in Land O’ Lakes.“Everybody wants a place like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Joe knows our names.” The journey from renovations to opening day took nearly two years of entanglements in bureaucratic red tape. Licenses and approvals to brew their own craft beer brands just arrived. See BREWERY, page 19A

student that is currently in the system,” Beaudoin said. After she decided to run, Beaudoin began regularly attending school board meetings and workshops. “I know I still have a lot to learn, but I know it’s been a luxury to have this time to prepare myself,” she said. As she assumes her seat on the board, Beaudoin has identified some key issues she wants the school system to address. She’d like to see better communications between the district and families. “I think we have a lot of great programs in Pasco County, and parents don’t know about them. We’ve got to make sure that people can make informed decisions about their children,” she said. See EDUCATOR, page 19A

I went to the school board meeting, just as a mom, and spoke and was well received. We had meetings. We worked together with the school. I felt like I was able to make a positive impact,” she said. “Then, I found out that Joanne Hurley was not going to run again. I spoke to her and started asking more questions and talking to different people.A lot of parents that I’ve known in the community said, ‘You should do this.’ “So, I started looking into it more,” said Beaudoin, who has two sons who are graduates of Land O’ Lakes High School and one son who attends Pine View Middle. “I think it’s helpful that I bring that perspective to the board — of a parent with a

Colleen Beaudoin, who joins the Pasco County School Board this week, thinks her background as an educator and as a mom of a student in the district, will equip her well to ask pertinent questions in her new role.

The newest member of the Pasco County School Board believes the perspective she brings to the board will aid in its deliberations. Colleen Beaudoin, a career educator, said her background in the field, coupled with the experiences she’s had as a mother of children in the system, will help her to ask the right questions when issues come before the board. “I didn’t set out with this goal of being on the school board,” said Beaudoin, who was unopposed in her bid to replace Joanne Hurley. Hurley, who has served eight years on the board, retired from her post this week. Beaudoin said she felt encouraged to run because of some experiences she’s had in the past couple of years. “In the spring of 2015, there were two different things going on,” she said. “My youngest has Tourette’s Syndrome,” she explained. “I started getting involved with the national association. I’m on the educational advisory board. That was when the Elementary and Secondary Education Act was up for reauthorization,” she said. She encouraged people to write their lawmakers. “People responded. I started meeting with different people, advocating for kids,” Beaudoin said. “At the same time, there were some changes at the (Pine View) middle school that I was concerned about,” she said. That was when Pine View was getting ready to seek to become an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Candidate School. “It’s a good program,” Beaudoin said. “I

Not many high-schoolers are like Logan Beatty. The freshman at Land O’ Lakes High School is a member of a select group. He was one of 11 youths nationwide chosen to participate in President Barack Obama’s first-ever Kid Science Advisor program on Oct. 21. The 14-year-old submitted an essay to the White House last spring, outlining the importance of exploring the world’s oceans in developing better technology. “I used some of the inspiration that I have from living in Florida, and going to do beach cleanups,” Beatty said. More than 2,500 essays were submitted nationwide, for the Kid Science Advisor program. Beatty was selected to represent the Southeast region. “You don’t get that many opportunities to get your voice heard — especially as a student,” Beatty said. Beatty and others participated in a roundtable discussion about future STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) ideas with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, senior Administration officials, and various pioneers of scientific discovery. Among the people he met were Dr. John Holdren, President Obama’s chief science advisor; Charles Bolden, current NASA administrator; France Cordova, director of the National Science Foundation; and Scott and Mark Kelly, retired astronauts who are twin brothers. It was an experience that Beatty is unlikely to soon forget.

Eleven students nationwide were chosen to participate in the Kid Science Advisor program, held on Oct. 21.

“It was really cool,” Beatty said, “because I’m not sure how often (kids) are able to do things like this.” During his visit, Beatty was able to explore the West Wing of the White House, touring the Roosevelt Room and the Oval Office. “It was really incredible,” he said about the White House.“When we first went in, they had two different layers of security, which was a very long process. But, once we did get inside, it was just random, little details that stood out — like the black floor tiles actually had fossils in them. And, we got to see the library of the Executive

Office, which was really cool. I liked some of the architecture.” White House officials initially told Beatty “there was no way” the group of kids would meet President Obama. Yet, a short time later, President Obama walked through the back door of the Roosevelt Room, to the group’s surprise. “I nearly stopped breathing,” Beatty said with a chuckle.“We saw him for about five (minutes) to seven minutes. It’s more than most people get to see President Obama, especially in his office.” See STUDENT, page 19A

Digital billboards illuminate controversy By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Stand-alone, static billboards litter the highways and roadways across Pasco County despite a 17-year-ban on permitting new billboards. Dismantling and removing many of these outdoor signs is a longstanding goal of county officials who want to reduce what they view as visual blight on county roads. But, in a high technology world, the wave of the future is illuminated digital billboards that flip through multiple advertisements in seconds, and at night, illuminate the skyline while motorists zip by. Owners of outdoor advertising companies are hoping to strike a deal with Pasco County commissioners to swap out some static billboards in return for installing a smaller number of digital billboards. But, working out a formula for the tradeoff is proving to be difficult. On a 3-2 vote on November 9, the Pasco County Commission decided to postpone a decision on the proposed ordinance for 30 days to allow additional negotiations. Pasco County Chairwoman Kathryn Starkey took a tough stance on the matter — while commissioners Mike Moore, Jack

Mariano and Mike Wells Jr., favored the delay. a limit of 30 seconds, while industry repre“I think you guys are being played by a sentatives favor 8 seconds. savvy industry,” Starkey said. “Why do we Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore have to give them everything they want?” said industry input would be key to making The ordinance, if apthe ordinance work. proved, would amend an “I would like to see existing one that bans new some of your static billbillboards. we need,” he said. Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader pointed out that it was industry representatives who pushed for the ordinance, not residents or chambers of commerce. He offered an 8-to-1 ratio compromise, but got no takers. “I don’t know how this helps our local businesses,” he said. “To me it’s sort of the tail wagging the dog.” Schrader suggested voting on the ordinance with the 10-to-1 ratio and giving it a chance to work. He criticized industry representatives for missing a meeting with county staff to discuss the ordinance prior to the hearing. They did meet individually with some commissioners, he said. “They chose not to lobby me, because they knew I couldn’t be persuaded,” Schrader said. Wells Jr., who supported the delay, had a warning for industry representatives. “If you don’t meet with them (staff), I’m done, too,” he said. The Nov. 9 commission meeting in New Port Richey was Schrader’s last meeting, after 16 years on the board. His seat will be filled by Ron Oakley, who won the District 1 race on Nov. 8.

Distinguished rabbi speaks on interfaith relations By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

A renowned rabbi, known affectionately as “the Pope’s rabbi,” thinks significant improvements have been made on the relationship between Catholics and Jews. That religious leader — Rabbi Abraham Skorka, of Buenos Aires, Argentina — visited Saint Leo University on Nov. 1 for a series of public discussions on interreligious dialogue. Skorka cultivated a friendship with Pope Francis in the mid-1990s, when Pope Francis was known as Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio. Together, the men wrote the book,“On Heaven and Earth,” published in 2010. The book is based on more than 30 TV shows they co-hosted in Argentina. The 66-year-old Skorka described his association with Pope Francis as “a real friendship.” “The relationship between us is not a political relationship,” Skorka said. “We share a common value — we speak openly from one to another.” During the speaking engagement, Skorka heaped praise on Pope Francis, calling him an “extraordinary personality.” “He tries to perform a real change in hu-

manity,” he said.“He has spiritual courage.” Deep dialogue, the rabbi said, is crucial to continuing to cultivate positive relationships between Christians and Jews. “I do consider that there undoubtedly have been great improvements, but...dialogue depends on individuals. It’s not just a movement, but it depends on a great measure on the doing of individuals,” Skorka said. He added:“If, in the future, we have people who have a great commitment in the concept of dialogue, then yes, we will go ahead.” He added that Catholic-Jewish relations in the United States are “at a very good level. “You already have organizations working on the theme,” he said,“and this is very important.” However, Skorka said he’s witnessed a recent decrease in people practicing what he calls real faith, or living a “deep, religious life.” He asked:“How many people are really living in a deep sense of religiosity?” “We don’t really have great models — religious teachers. We are in need of them,” he said. During his visit, Skorka was honored with the Eternal Light Award, which recognizes those who have made “outstanding contributions” to Catholic-Jewish relations. He was the

award’s 13th recipient, presented by the Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies at Saint Leo University. Matthew Tapie, the center’s director, also believes the relationship between Catholics and Jews “has become stronger” during the past two decades. It’s partly due to the impact made by the late Pope John Paul II,Tapie said. Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005, became the first pope known to have made an official papal visit to a synagogue, when he visited the Great Synagogue of Rome, in 1986. Additionally, he was the first pope to visit the German Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, and often paid homage to Holocaust victims. “His work is viewed by the Jewish community as enhancing the relationship between Jews and Catholics,”Tapie said. Tapie said scholars feel the interfaith relationship can progress through interfaith partnerships for social justice action to help oppressed people. “Part of the healing of relationships...has been Catholics being able to come to terms with a history of (Jewish) persecution,”Tapie said.“Insofar, the relationship is on the way to

healing. There’s forgiveness, and forgiveness about a particular thing —persecution.” Ida Margolis, who chairs GenShoah Southwest Florida, an organization for children of Holocaust survivors, agreed. “It’s not just words, it’s deeds,” said Margolis. “It’s the idea of getting to know one another,” she added.

Coca-Cola will be on tap at Florida Hospital Center Ice By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Coca-Cola Beverages Florida and Florida Hospital Center Ice are joining forces to bring Coca-Cola products to the soon-toopen ice hockey and sports complex in Wesley Chapel, according to a news release from Florida Hospital Center Ice. The iconic cola company and Florida Hospital reached an agreement for CocaCola to exclusively provide non-alcoholic beverages at the new facility, which is under construction at the Interstate 75 and State Road 56 interchange. Construction is expected to conclude in December, followed by an official opening in January 2017. Coca-Cola products include Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero, Sprite, Fanta, Powerade, Core Power and Dasani bottled water. The exclusive rights for Coca-Cola prohibits competitive beverages, soft drinks, sports or energy drinks, water, tea and juices from the facility’s concession stand and the full-service restaurant – Top Shelf Sports Lounge - on the mezzanine level. “Coca-Cola is such an iconic brand and so synonymous with sports, that we thought it was a natural partner for our new facility,” said Gordie Zimmermann, in a written statement. Zimmerman is the complex’s managing partner, with Florida Hospital Center Ice. Florida Hospital Center Ice is billed as the largest sports facility in the southeastern United States. It is more than 150,000 square feet and offers four ice rinks plus a

mini-rink. Zimmermann’s company, Z Mitch LLC, invested $28 million in the facility. Florida Hospital is the facility’s major sponsor and naming partner. The Tampa Bay Lightning is a program rink partner. Advertising sponsors include Bright House Networks, Buffalo Wild Wings, DEX Imaging, RIPA Associates, Snyder Financial, Team Bohannon/kw, and The Toni Everett Co. Center Ice will host national and international hockey tournaments and figure skating competitions, and is seeking sponsors for its special events. There’s no place like in PASCO & NORTH HILLSBOROUGH

My Model Home Obsession By Diane Kortus, Publisher

I

t’s almost impossible to live in this area and not be tempted to look at model homes in the many new communities that surround us. In the past few months, I’ve toured Connerton, Lakeshore Ranch, Asturia, Starkey Ranch, Estancia, Esplanade, The Promenade and most recently Bexley, which opened earlier

this month to astonishing, openingday crowds of over 2,000 people. All these new communities share one thing in common — beautiful model homes. Touring these homes transports me to a fantasy of a perfect life with furniture that matches and beds that are always made. No matter the size or price of the home, these models always maximize their floor plan with the latest decorating trends and have me dreaming that this model would be the perfect home for me. My problem, however, is that the last model I’ve toured is always the one I like best. Which is why I am still looking, perhaps because I too easily visualize myself living in any one of our planned communities, happily keeping house in just about any floor plan. Perhaps it’s this model home obsession that I’ve developed that

makes me so passionate about this home section that you’re reading. My staff and I put a lot of energy in producing this special advertising section every month, which we’ve christened “There’s No Place Like Home.” Seven months after launching its first issue, readers and advertisers continue to tell us they like what we’re doing. We all know that home is where your heart is. And no matter where we came from, for most of us today our home is right here in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills or Dade City. This sense of home is why our home section is successful. People enjoy reading about the new communities going up around them, and learning about small businesses that provide services to homeowners. Do you ever wonder who is moving into all these new homes?

Many people incorrectly believe that these new homes are being sold to people moving into Pasco from other areas. But that’s not the case. Most developers and homebuilders tell us that over half of their buyers come from neighboring communities. And over at Bexley, they tell us that in the first few years of their development, the vast majority of their buyers will come from Pasco and Hillsborough County. And these families move for the same reasons people have always moved — a nicer home, better schools, close proximity to family and friends, nicer lots and amenities like zero-entry pools, close-by playgrounds, social clubhouses and trails that wind through nature preserves. It is our hope that you use this home section to help you find the perfect community and home for your family.

B

exley is Pasco’s newest master-planned community. Centrally located in Land O’ Lakes, Bexley opened earlier this month with over 2,000 people attending its grand opening festivities, and 17 homes sold in its first week. With six of Tampa’s best-known builders, several distinct neighborhoods and 1,200 acres of natural amenities and preserved wilderness, it can be overwhelming for many buyers to understand all that Bexley has to offer. And, that’s where The Toolbox Sisters come in. Allison and Amanda Vaughn work as a Realtor team that specializes in new home communities. This dynamic duo answers buyers’ questions and addresses their personal needs. They help buyers by comparing builders and their incentives, explaining amenities and community fees, and assessing Bexley to similar communities. “Our goal is to help buyers determine if Bexley is the right community for them, and then find them the perfect home for their family based on their budget, their wish list and personal needs,” said Amanda. “Plus, there is no cost to use our services, since our commission is paid by the builder,” Allison adds.

Thankful for a Vibrant Community and Neighbors Who Care

A

s Connerton celebrates its 11th Thanksgiving, our staff at Club Connerton, in marketing and development, and our family of builders are forever thankful for the 500 families that call Connerton home. And, as we gather this Thanksgiving, we invite our friends outside of Connerton to visit our community and see how happy our residents are to live here, and enjoy life as they bike and walk our nature trails, and play in our beautiful parks. Connerton truly wishes all of our residents, our nearby neighbors and local businesses a very Happy Thanksgiving as we all celebrate the blessings we share.

WHAT MAKES CONNERTON UNIQUE?

Connerton is more than a community — it’s a New Town in the heart of Pasco County — a town that thinks more, gives more, dreams more and wants more for its residents and neighbors. Connerton is unique because it is one of only three designated New Town communities in Florida, and the only one in the Tampa Bay area. This difficult-to-achieve designation was awarded by the State of Florida and Pasco County in 2004 because of its comprehensive master-plan that promotes self-sufficiency, and directs and guarantees the community’s future. By definition, a New Town encompasses its own housing, education and government, health care, retail, commerce and recreation. Other New Towns in Florida are Seaside in the panhandle, and Celebration outside of Orlando. Connerton’s New Town is the largest planned community in Pasco County, with 4,800 acres of mostly pristine land between U.S. 41 and Ehren Cutoff, and south of State Road 52. There are 1,000 acres dedicated as nature preserves, which are home to hundreds of species of indigenous

birds and wildlife. When complete, Connerton’s New Town commitment of live, work and play will make the community selfsustaining. It will encompass up to 8,500 homes, 730,000 sq. feet of retail services, and 1.4 million sq. feet of office/medical office and industrial space. Its schools include Connerton Elementary, one of the best schools in Pasco County, and three more are planned for the area. Families chose to live at Connerton because they recognize the immense potential of this New Town. And as Connerton grows, so do the opportunities for residents to work close to where they live. For the past three years, Connerton has averaged over 100 new home starts annually. Many of these new homes buyers are current residents

finding their next home in Connerton. Other buyers are family and friends of current residents who want to live down the street or around the corner, so they too can enjoy Connerton’s many amenities. In addition to the Club Connerton’s spectacular amenities, residents walk and bike the nature trails, play and relax in the community’s four parks, and take their furry friends to exercise and play in the private dog park. Connerton parents rest easy as their kids enjoy Connerton’s camp programs, where kids find their creative side with arts and crafts, stay fit while swimming in the resort-style pool and socialize through supervised daily activities. As Connerton grows, so do businesses in the area, including a new McDonald’s, which recently opened

Need Office or Reta ail Space? SAVE UP TO $50,000 AT BLACK LAKE

- Highhway frontage on U.S. 41, one of the buusiest roads in Pascoo County with daily ttraffic count of over 4 45,000 vehicles

Are you considering an office condominium for your company, or as an investment? If you want the best value in central Pasco, look no further than Black Lake Professional Office Park in Land O’ Lakes. Located on U.S. 41, just north of the Land O’ Lakes Post Office, you can save up to $50,000 on a 1,500 square foot office condo at Black Lake, when compared to similar office space on State Road 54. “There’s no better value in commercial property than , said Realtor Codyy Adams of Russell Black Lake,” Adams Realty, who is marketing the development. “Prices along 54 are typically $50,000 more for new construction of the same square footage. Plus, they do not have the same direct highway frontage and signage as does Black Lake,” he said. U.S. 41 Resurgence Located just three miles north of State Road 54, Black Lake is the first new office park available in the fast-developing U.S. 41 corridor. “Unlike State Road 54 and its continual road construction, U.S. 41 is already an expanded three-lane highway in both directions, beginning at the Lutz apex and continuing 15 miles almost to State Road 52,” said Adams. “This means businesses in Black Lake do not need to worry about future road construction in front of their office blocking customers and employees,” he said. The U.S. 41 corridor, which is called Land O’ Lakes Boulevard north of State Road 54, is undergoing a commercial resurgence, with many older buildings being replaced with new construction. “Buying at Black Lake now is a smart move because prices have not yet caught up with the redevelopment of 41. And when that happens, the savings compared to commercial on State Road 54 will no longer be there,” said Adams.

Construction on the 7,800 square foot building will be co completed p eted in ea earlyy 2017. 0 There e e will be five eo offices ces configured in 1,500 and 1,800 square foot units. Because the building is strategically zoned C-2, it’s appropriate for both retail storefronts and professional offices. Next door is the original Black Lake office building, which is home to several long-established Land O’ Lakes business, including chiropractor Michael Craven, dentist Brian Bernier and financial planner Chris Cooper. The new building’s architectural design will match the upscale, Mediterranean style of the original building with its distinctive terra cotta stucco exterior. Both buildings face U.S. 41 and the open spaces of the Land O’ Lakes Recreational Center with its ball fields, playground and community stage. “In addition to price, the biggest reason businesses are moving to Black Lake are the 45,0000 vehicles that pass by the building every day,” said Adams. Wa W arehouse Building Soon to be under construction, and immediately behind the two office buildings, is a 20,000 square feet warehouse building. Space will be divided into seven, 2,800 square foot units, and all come with a 400-square-foot office.

- Just three miles north of State Road 54 - Exceellent highway signagge and visibility - FFaast access to Suncooast Expresssswayy,, I-75 aand North Dale Mabr y Highway - Nextt door to the Land O’ Lakes Post Office and close to many surrounding resideential communities annd businesses - Quieet professional settingg with mature landsccaping and amplee parking

“The warehouse space is very unique and something we’re getting lots of calls on,” said Adams. “It’s ideal for businesses needing large open areas and direct access to a major highway.”

Russell Adams Realty has been central Pa Pasco’’ss most respected commercial and residential real estate company for over 50 years. Please call Cody Adams with questions about the Black Lake development, as well as an ny other real estate inquiries, at (813) 503-6933. November 23, 2016

he much-anticipated Bexley community welcomed over 2,000 visitors at its grand opening festivities on Nov. 12. The Land O’ Lakes development has been so well received, that 17 hew homes were sold in its first few weeks. We've tried to think of every detail, and we're certain that Bexley will be a wonderful community to live in, whether you're a family with kids, just starting out, or looking to downsize," said Panaseny. Centrally located in Land O’ Lakes, at State Road 54 and the Suncoast Parkway, Bexley is a 1,700acre community that offers residents a sporty, social lifestyle that maximizes its pristine natural surroundings. From day one, Bexley residents get to hike, bike, walk and run adventure trails. Four regional malls are within 15 miles of Bexley — Tampa Premium Outlets, The Shops at Wiregrass and The Grove, all in Wesley Chapel, and Westfield Citrus Park in Citrus Park. Bexley Village Drive, with direct access to the Suncoast Parkway, is currently under construction and is expected to be complete by late spring 2017. The roadway will connect Tower Road to State Road 54, and allow residents to bypass Ballentrae Road for State Road 54 access.

With homes priced from $210,000, Bexley has six award-winning homebuilders to choose from: CalAtlantic Homes, Cardel Homes, David Weekley Homes, Homes by WestBay, ICI Homes and Lennar. “We’ve selected this group of builders because we know they will bring our community vision to life,” said Panaseny of Newland Communities. “Nature is our inspiration, not only in the community’s character, but in home designs as well. Some elevations are exclusive to Bexley, making this a unique, vibrant community unlike any other in Pasco County.”

BEST SCHOOLS

Many families are moving to Bexley for its outstanding schools, including a new school recently christened Bexley Elementary that

will open for the 2017-18 school year. For upper grades, top-rated schools assigned to Bexley are Charles S. Rushe Middle School and Sunlake High School.

Lacrosse fundraiser rescheduled to March By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The PascoLax Harley Jam, organized by the Pasco County Lacrosse Alliance (PCLA), has been rescheduled. The event, originally slated for Dec. 3, will take place on March 25 from noon to 6 p.m., at the Concourse Rotary Pavilion, 15325 Alric Pottberg Road in Spring Hill. The shindig, which organizers intend to hold annually, will feature a rock/country concert and a reverse raffle. Concert performers include three Tampa-based bands: Soul Circus Cowboys, Jaded and Phoenix. The grand prize to be raffled off is a choice of either a 2017 Harley-Davidson SuperGlide, or a $20,000 cash prize. Tickets for the concert/raffle are $100, while concert-only tickets are $10 per person. Only 2,000 tickets — 1,000 raffle and 1,000 general admissions — will be sold. Food trucks and other vendors will be present, and 98 Rock will provide a live remote from the concert. All net proceeds from the benefit will help the PCLA provide funding for several Pasco County high schools to offer boys and girls lacrosse programs. Sunlake, Mitchell, Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass Ranch high schools will offer club lacrosse programs, for the 2017 season.

Anclote, Land O’ Lakes and Zephyrhills high schools, meanwhile, are expected to form boys and girls lacrosse programs, for the 2018 season. The PCLA, a nonprofit organization, is also assisting the transition of the programs from a club-level sport to a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA)-sanctioned sport, beginning with the 2018 spring season. Eric Handman, fundraising director of the PCLA, said the fundraiser will help subsidize the expenditures to operate each school’s boys and girls lacrosse programs. “It costs a lot to fund a team,” Handman said, “when you consider refereeing fees, bussing, field use, goals and equipment.” David Mazursky, president of the PCLA, told The Laker/Lutz News in September that he estimates equipment and operational costs for the lacrosse organization will total about $15,000 per school. Whatever funds aren’t covered through sponsorships will trickle down to players in a “pay-for-play” model. According to its website, the PCLA is looking to set the registration fee in the same arena as Hillsborough County’s, which decreased from $390 to $320 over the past three years. “The goal is eventually to get the pay-toplay fee more reasonable,” Handman said. Plantation Palms Golf Club is in the swing of things By Kathy Steele

Beer-brewing friends Mark Pizzurro, left, Peter Abreut and Joe Traina have opened In the Loop Brewing at 3338 Land O’ Lakes Blvd.

BREWERY, from page 1A Within a month of so, five In the Loop brews will be on tap, with more to come. First arrivals will be an IPA, a vanilla espresso porter, a Vienna lager and a pale ale. Pizzurro is the brewmeister. He served an internship at Big Storm Brewing in Odessa. Abreut is a former firefighter who owns Crossfit En Fuego, located next door to In the Loop. He focuses on the brewery’s marketing. Traina deals with sales, and they all handle bar duties. For now, beers on tap include local and Florida-based brews such as Funky Buddha and Sunshine City IPA. Looking for something different? Try a Swedish cider in a tall, cool glass. But, the In the Loop brews aren’t the

EDUCATOR, from page 1A She’s not sure exactly what should be done, but one possibility might be to hold information nights in each of the county’s three areas to give parents a chance to come and learn about the wide variety of programs the district offers, she said. “We have all of these Career Academies now. We have magnet programs. We have magnet schools. We have a lot to offer. I don’t know if everyone knows,” she said. She said she is advocating for all students, to be sure the district keeps “the doors open as long as possible for kids to make choices and see what’s out there.” As an educator who joined the teaching profession in 1988, Beaudoin said she knows what questions to ask. But she added:“Not everybody does.” She thinks the district needs to provide

final touch for what the partners see as a slow, deliberate introduction to the neighborhood. More is to come. A staircase from the tasting room to the second floor eventually will open into a special events room. Before that can happen, though, a second exit must be installed to meet county building and safety codes. In the moment, however, guests can enjoy the bar, and a tasting room with dark concrete floors and a brick chimney. Oldstyle suitcases, cut in half, jut from a wall and serve as drink rests. Outside, the patio and a wooden deck roll out toward Lake Padgett, with peaceful views of the lapping waters. additional support for classroom teachers. “A lot of teachers are disheartened. They’re working really hard.We need to find a way to support them in the classroom,” she said. “I want to see what we can do.We have got to do something so our teachers can focus on teaching our kids. We’ve got to see what we can take off their plates, so they can focus on teaching our kids,” she added. She also like the district to work harder on identifying more gifted and talented students in its underrepresented populations.“I think a lot of kids slip through the cracks, and we need to make an effort,” she said. “We need to inspire people. We need to inspire our kids,” Beaudoin said, noting,“I’m trying to focus on things that we really can do. “I really want to get in there and speak up, and ask questions. I do know what questions to ask,” Beaudoin said.

Sophomore paces Wharton boys cross-country By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Wharton High School’s Tre Rivers is quietly making a name for himself as one of the state’s top distance runners. And, he’s just a sophomore. On Nov. 5, Rivers placed ninth in the Class 4A FHSAA Cross Country Finals at Appalachia Regional Park, crossing the finish line in 16:16.09, a 5K personal record and the fastest time of any Hillsborough County runner at the state meet. “It was a goal I had, but I never thought it would actually happen,” Rivers humbly said of his top-10 state finish. His secret to success? “I just stay relaxed, said Rivers,“and just be confident.” The rise to becoming one of the state’s top cross-country runners has been rather swift for the underclassman. Rivers, who began running competitively at 8 years old, focused exclusively on track throughout middle school, mainly competing in sprints and middle distance races. “Track was like my niche,” said Rivers, whose older sister, Bryanna, recently signed a track scholarship with the University of Massachusetts. But, it wasn’t until he started high school that his penchant for running long distance was realized. As a freshman, Rivers ran his first high school cross-country race in a rather uneventful time of 20:33, a 6:38 pace per mile. By the start of the 2016 cross-country season, however, Rivers had slashed his 5K mark to 17:34, a 5:40 pace per mile. Wharton cross-country coach Kyle LoJacono said he knew Rivers had the ability to be a “very strong runner,” but first had to gear his training regimen towards longer, sustained runs that incorporated cross country terrains, like hills and trails. “We knew that once we got his distance base built back up that he was going to really cut (time),” LoJacono said. “With him, the longer it is, usually the better.” Rivers, who now holds the school’s sophomore 5K record, is eyeing the

Wharton all-time record of 15:55, set in 2005, by Ryan Courtoy. “That would definitely be within his reach,” said LoJacono, “especially with the fact that we know his work ethic is going to continue.” That work ethic, LoJacono said, often helped inspire Rivers’ fellow teammates throughout a grueling cross-country season. “He never, ever cheats you on a workout. He will give max effort,” LoJacono said.“He kind of sets that standard for everybody else, and because he works so hard every single day, it gives everybody else that goal.” It surely worked, as Wharton reached the

state finals for the first time since 2008, finishing in ninth place (out of 20 teams). “What really was the key,” said LoJacono, “was Tre being that No. 1 every single day.” “He gets stronger as the race goes on,” the Wharton’s third-year coach added. “It really kind of allows everybody else to do the same thing, because they see, ‘Wow, look at that,’” LoJacono said. With no seniors on the roster, the Wildcats’ recent success — like Rivers’—doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. All of Wharton’s other top runners are expected to return in 2017, including: Noah Damjanovic (17:18.91 at states), Sahil

Deschenes (17:30.46), Frank Goldbold (17:34.72), Casey Pleune (17:46.76), Denarius Murphy (18:44.99) and Ryan Anders (19:18.20). “This groups wants to establish itself.” LoJacono said. In the meantime, Rivers will look to continue his success this spring — on the track. Last season, he set school track records for freshman in the 3,200-meter (9:58.68), 1,600-meter (4:36.14) and 800-meter (2:07.83) races. “I really can’t live without the other,” Rivers said of competing in both track and cross-country.

Guiding Pasco County Schools is a big job Kurt Browning was unopposed for his second four-year term By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A

s Kurt Browning begins his second term as superintendent of Pasco County Schools, he knows he’s got his work cut out for him. He found that out during his first term. “I tell people, I have not worked as hard in my adult life as I have this past four years,” said Browning, who directs the daily operations of Florida’s 11th-largest school district. The 58-year-old quickly added:“Although I’ve never worked this hard, I’ve probably never done anything as fulfilling.” Elected without opposition, Browning oversees an organization with 88 schools, 73,340 students and 9,954 employees. When he came on board, he said he assumed he’d be able to accomplish change faster. “I’ve always been able to effectuate change pretty quickly,” said Browning, who previously served as Florida’s Secretary of State and Pasco’s Supervisor of Elections. In Pasco County Schools, though, he found that change has been incremental, rather than sweeping. He likens it to turning a big ship. And, he acknowledges, it hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. For one thing, Browning said he also had to learn to work alongside the elected Pasco County School Board. “That was a tough adjustment for me,” Browning said, adding that he hasn’t always been perfect on that score. “I think there has been a board member or two who has pulled me aside and said, ‘You really need to communicate better. You need to keep us more informed,’” the superintendent said. It’s a lesson he’s taken to heart: “I still make decisions, but I’ve got to remember that I’ve got a school board out there, and they’ve got a role,” he said. When issues arise now, Browning aims to keep school board members in the loop. For instance, the school board met in executive session on Nov. 15, so the staff could brief them on the impasse declared on Nov. 11 by the United School Employees of Pasco.

A LEARNING CURVE OF HIS OWN

The superintendent also had to develop a deeper knowledge of education issues. “The first year and a half, it was a challenge,” Browning said. Now, he can discuss educational issues facing the district and potential impacts on students, but said he’s no expert on education. So, he said, he surrounds himself with “highly qualified, competent people — passionate people” he can turn to for the information he needs to make decisions. The district faces big challenges. “July 8th was not a good day for me.That was the day that the school grades came out. School grades dropped,” Browning said. The district’s rank also dropped, from 33rd in the state to 39th. “We’ve got to see some improvement,” Browning said. “We cannot continue to teach kids the same way we did 25 years ago, because it’s just not working.” At the same time, it’s important to remember that good things are happening around the district, Browning said. “You can go into kindergarten classrooms and see kids doing things independently that are just mind blowing,” he said. He’s also impressed by the number of graduates receiving scholarships every year, and the schools the students plan to attend and their planned areas of study.

Kurt Browning, superintendent of Pasco County Schools, bends his 6-foot-2 frame to get down to eye level with these children at Fox Hollow Elementary School.

Browning understands that people judge schools by their school grade, but he said, it doesn’t tell the whole story. “It doesn’t show all of the caring teachers, the caring administration. It doesn’t show all of the activities and the support that those folks give to the kids in those schools,” he said. Still, it’s problematic when the district is drawing new school boundaries, Browning said. At public meetings on proposed boundaries, it’s common for parent to resist sending their child to a school that has a lower grade. That issue is likely to surface more often, as the district grapples to accommodate Pasco County’s burgeoning growth. Work is now underway to Browning tours Quail Hollow Elementary, which was converted from an ‘open’ school to one with tradirecommend school boundaries tional windows, walls and doors. for Bexley Elementary and It also has added an Aviation Academy at Cypress Creek Middle/High School, which technology, Browning said. “I have done everything but knocked on Sunlake, Hudson and Zephyrhills high are set to open next fall. MARY RATHMAN/STAFF PHOTO

A mighty view

Mary Rathman snapped this osprey that perched itself on a dead palm tree in her neighbor’s yard in Land O’ Lakes. The bird landed, while Rathman and her husband were having lunch on their back porch. The osprey had a spectacular view on the clear day for any meal it may have been seeking. It claimed the roost for a couple hours.

Louie is a 3-month-old baby. He loves to gives kisses and to garner as much attention as he can for himself. Louie would be a lovely addition to your home for the holiday season. Adoption fees are only $16 in the month of November at Pasco County Animal Services.

Red is an older guy who seems to have been around the block - and he still thinks that everything is awesome. He has a lust for life and exultation of spirit. Nothing can get Red down, except maybe being stuck in this shelter - and he is running out of time. Red is on the urgent list, and that means he really needs to find someone to share his exuberance, and fast. Give Red a chance.

If you would like to adopt either Louie or Red, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes.
