No progress on reopening Lake Park By Kevin Weiss

A park in Lutz that draws an estimated 300,000 users each year will not be reopening anytime soon. Lake Park, at 17302 N. Dale Mabry Highway, has been closed since Dec. 2 due to a sinkhole that spans 6 feet across and is about 90 feet deep. No progress has been made in repairing the sinkhole because Hillsborough County has not yet negotiated a new lease with the City of St. Petersburg, which owns the park, said Forest Turbiville, Hillsborough County’s director of conservation and environmental lands management. A meeting regarding the lease has been set for June 23.

“During those discussions, we will talk about sinkholes, who’s responsible for paying to remedy that situation, and other issues, too — like the term of the agree-

ment,”Turbiville said. The county prefers a lease that lasts around 30 years,Turbiville said. “If we’re going to be spending several hundred thousands of dollars over the next few years to make various improvements, whether it’s filling in the sinkhole or paving the main road, upgrading facilities — we want to make sure we have a long-term agreement,”Turbiville explained. The existing lease agreement for Lake Park expires on June 3, 2019. Under that deal, Hillsborough County pays just $1 per year to the City of St. Petersburg to operate the park. Pasco County residents looking to grab a bite to eat will have two new dining options starting this month. One of those options, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, opened on June 6. Chick-fil-A will open June 30. The restaurants are side-by-side on Sun Vista Drive, in front of Tampa Premium Outlets, off State Road 56, in Wesley Chapel. Before opening day at Cheddar’s, about 170 employees received training and worked at an invitation-only dinner session to get ready for customers. “I think we’re excited. It’s a new destination, a new area,” said Mark Garcia, a general manager from Laredo,Texas. He was on temporary assignment to launch Cheddar’s at the Cypress Creek Town Center, a major retail center anchored by the outlet mall. Pasco County resident John Seebach will be the new restaurant’s general manager. Diners weren’t the only ones eager to have Cheddar’s on their radar. Garcia said

about 1,500 people applied for jobs. The restaurant seats nearly 320 people and serves meals made fresh from scratch daily. Menu items include hand-battered onion rings, grilled hand-cut salmon, homemade chicken pot pie and hot fudge cake sundaes. “Everything is made pretty much in house,” Garcia said. This is the first Cheddar’s in Pasco. Next door, construction crews are busy getting Chick-fil-A primed for its opening. Owner Britt Young previously owned a Chick-fil-A in Moultrie, Georgia. “I’ve got family all around here,” said Young, who lives in Lutz.“We love the area.” The chicken chain got its start in 1946 as a diner in Atlanta, opened by Truett Cathy. Cathy opened his first Chick-fil-A brand restaurant in 1967, also in Atlanta. From the beginning, Cathy kept his restaurants closed on Sundays, saying employees needed time to spend with their families. According to the company website, Chick-fil-A has about 1,700 locations in 38 states and Washington D.C.

The Fourth of July is just weeks away, and Lutz is gearing up for its annual festivities. This is a place that enjoys its Independence Day traditions, and it likes the community to join in on the fun. The main thing is, if you want to take part, it’s not too early to begin gearing up for the annual event. One of the highlights each year is the auction that takes place after the parades, where cakes and pies that have been entered into the Cake Bake competition go home with the highest bidder. And, finding out who will win the annual Lutz Guv’na race is always fun, too. This annual competition, which raises money for local organizations, is a good-natured competition where the only qualification that the winner must possess is the ability to raise money. Lacrosse tournament to stay in Wesley Chapel By B.C. Manion

Lacrosse players from across the nation will compete in Wesley Chapel at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions for at least the next two years. Pasco County and NDP (National Development Program) Lacrosse have entered into an agreement that covers the tournament for 2016 and 2017. Last year’s tournament had a $2.1 million economic impact on Pasco and Hillsborough counties, said Ed Caum, Pasco County’s tourism manager. With new developments — such as Tampa Premium Outlets and Florida Hospital Center Ice, as well as other businesses and restaurants — there’s potential for an even greater economic return from the visitors, Caum said. "We are very pleased the Dick's Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions lacrosse tournament will be returning to Wesley Chapel,” Tracy Clouser, board chair of The Greater Wesley Chamber of Commerce, said via email.“We feel the area has a lot to offer tournament attendees and their support of our hotels, restaurants and shopping venues has a significant economic impact on our community." Besides the economic boost, the tournament offers lacrosse players a chance to showcase their skills, and colleges a chance to scout for players, Caum said. Teams from the United States and Canada earn bids at qualifying tournaments to compete for the national championship across five divisions. The tournament has been held at the Wesley Chapel District Park and at Wesley Chapel High School since 2008. This past year, 73 teams competed. Fiftynine came from out-of-state and 14 were from Florida, Caum said. The 2015 tournament involved 1,533 players and 219 coaches.There were about 3,250 spectators on each day of the tournament, which takes place each year from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31. On average, those traveling to the tournament stayed in the area for 3 ½ days to 4

days, Caum said. But, the tourism manager thinks more can be done to extend their stay. And, he’s begun reaching out to area sponsors to help make that happen. “The event kicks off at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Store.They are at The Grove every year. “There’s a number of other days that they’re going to be in the area. I’d like to see all of our shopping centers and local busi-

nesses step up and do some sponsorship to provide opportunities, to move these teams and their families around the whole Pasco area. “I’d love to see them go to Tree Hoppers, the new cable adventure park. I’d love to see them take an opportunity to go out to SunWest, because even in January that water temperature stays between 72 and 75 degrees because it’s spring-fed. “You actually could be out there on that giant water playground at the end of December.” Caum also would like to see more of the visitors bed down for the night in Pasco County. “I’ve got the report from NDP Lacrosse. About 20 percent of the participants stayed in Pasco and 80 percent stayed in Hillsborough,” Caum said, that’s a 20 percent increase in the number of visitors choosing Hillsborough hotels, instead of staying in Pasco.

“We had a number of our hoteliers that had raised their price up,” the tourism manager said. Families that may have preferred to stay in Pasco were priced out and stayed in Hillsborough hotels instead, he said. “We’re going to partner with the hotels a lot closer,” Caum said. “Just because you have a great event coming in, you can’t gouge your participants. We’re hoping that they don’t do that again this year,” Caum said. There was a time, back in 2012, when the lacrosse tournament’s future in Pasco County was uncertain. Back then, the tournament was being courted by IMG Academies, an elite athletic training facility in Bradenton. But, Pasco upped the ante in their bid to keep the tournament and were able to secure it for four more years. This time, the county signed a two-year deal with a third-year option, Caum said. The county didn’t want to tie the contract to the Wesley Chapel District Park and the fields at Wesley Chapel High School for a longer period, Caum said. FILE PHOTO “We may have a new field complex, depending on what rolls out with the sports complex,” Caum said, referring to Pasco County’s ongoing efforts to open a new sports complex. Regardless of where the event is, however, Caum said the county wants to continue the involvement of the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association. “We could not do it without them,” Caum said.“They’re the ones who provide all of the volunteers, and do all of the concessions and stuff.” “That’s another reason that the NDP wanted to come back, because of the relationship they have (with the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association) — they have that volunteer base,” Caum said. “Pasco County’s Board of County Commissioners, its Tourist Development Council and the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association have provided tremendous support to the event for nearly a decade,” Josh Gross, NDP’s vice president of business operations, said in a news release announcing the two-year deal.

Appreciating Joe Hancock’s legacy

o begin to appreciate the sudden and shocking loss of Joseph Neal Hancock — legacy grove owner, ubiquitous volunteer, Southern historian and, poignantly, amateur bicycling enthusiast — you begin here, a half-mile and then some from Townsend House Cemetery. Here, if you weren’t among the earliest arrivals, is where you park, on the edge of another of Pasco County’s narrow, unpaved roads, among the four-wheel-drive SUVs and pickup trucks. So very many pickup trucks, signaling something else important:This is a funeral for a working man. And so, despite the morning’s rising heat, you slip into your sport jacket — respect must be paid — and strike out around the bend, kicking up dust in pursuit of the old final resting place for some of the east county’s most notable pioneer families: Johnstons, Eilands, Bellamys and, by the dozens, Hancocks. So very many Hancocks. It was inevitable, then, Joe’s earthly remains would wind up here, on this shaded hill overlooking gentle pastureland and sparkling Middle Lake beyond, beneath the canopy of moss-draped oaks. It’s just the timing that was all off. Joe Hancock, the son of the son of the

son of farmers, was just 57 years old — the new 35, as every baby boomer knows — and hardy. We mentioned the bicycle. With cycling pal Jim Pavek pushing him and their families’ scalloping adventures waiting at the other end, he could make Steinhatchee, a 140-mile trip, in two days. He’d been known to pedal to North Carolina and beyond. And, he thought nothing of putting in a quick 10 miles most any morning before work … which is what he was doing that fateful Saturday at the end of May when things went tragically awry: Desiree Michelle Nathe, 20, state-champion high jumper, cresting a hill on Lake Iola Road in her Hyundai Accent and finding Hancock in her path, knocking him off his German Focus bike and into eternity. He leaves behind Jane, his first, foremost and lifetime love, three sons — Jimmy, 29, his business partner; Jackson, 18, who graduated high school Friday; and Jeb, 11 — and countless scores of friends, most of whom appear to have stories that begin,“You can’t put this in the newspaper.” They gathered a dozen deep around a simple maple casket last Wednesday morning, serenaded by nature’s summer sounds: the electric buzz of cicadas, cheeping cardinals, cooing doves, the mournful cry of a distant loon — all God’s creatures forming a proper soundtrack behind the brief narrative of an outdoorsman’s life as told by Bill Scaife, who pastors Wilderness Lake Church in far north Land O’ Lakes. Hancock didn’t lend, Scaife noted. He gave, because relationships were more important to him than balanced ledgers. He didn’t laugh or roll his eyes when a suburbanite new to country life insisted on burying a week-old calf with a blanket and a bottle she’d used in a hopeless attempt to keep it alive. And, not much more than a week or so

before, on a moonlight tour of their grove in the company golf cart with Jane by his side, he spoke as a philosopher about divine blessings, regrets — he had none — and their life together. It was all good, he said. The lad who once declared his intention to become “a legend in his own time” had grown into a man of achievement, generosity, refection and perspective. None of this is to suggest that anyone besides his Creator would have suggested Joe Hancock’s work in this mortal realm was even remotely complete. He was, it bears repeating, only 57 and, by every account, vibrant. There’s no telling what might have accomplished with another 30 years — which isn’t out of the question, based on the lifespans of the other Hancocks buried up on the hill — but even if it was only 30 years of adoring Jane, doting on grandchildren and inhaling the perfume of orange blossoms, so what? Instead, we are left to grapple, prematurely, with what he has bequeathed: yet another sad lesson about bicyclists lured to east Pasco’s tight, curvy, hilly back roads and motorists who happen upon them unexpectedly. “I don’t know why,” says Pavek, Hancock’s riding pal,“but I just think something good is going to come from this, for Joe’s sake.” What that something might be, Pavek can’t say for sure.Adding broad shoulders to the roads that attract cyclists from around the region would cost millions the county doesn’t have. Pasco’s emerging trail plan doesn’t stress the hilly routes cyclists love. And, even Pavek says there is more than adequate signage to alert drivers about the likely presence of bike riders. What, then? Maybe people will be more mindful now, he says.This is more likely the ephemeral wish of a bereaved friend, but

within it is the nugget of an opportunity. To make alertness stick, a perpetual reminder would be helpful. And, if that reminder is low-cost, so much the better. So how about this: Lake Iola Road, where a good man reared his boys, loved Jane, caused to prosper the family business and met his untimely end, gets an honorary second name: Joseph N. Hancock Memorial Highway. And, near the spot of the crash, a suitable plaque, affixed to a German Focus. So we remember, always, and drive, or cycle, accordingly. The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club received a $2,000 donation from the Lutz Civic Association toward the club’s Scholarship Fund for 2016. Family fun day nets $11,000 The third annual Law Enforcement Officers Family Fun Day had a record attendance of more than 600 and raised more than $11,000 for the Pasco County fallen officers fund. Tom Dobies, owner of Dobies Funeral Homes, added a personal donation of $5,000, to bring the total to more than $16,000. The day is dedicated to and recognizes Pasco County law enforcement and their families, and featured rides, demonstrations, exhibits and food. Q. What is Perpetual Care trusting, and why is it important? Since 1949, Florida has required cemeteries to trust a percentage of property sales into an approved perpetual care trust fund. The principal portion of those payments can never be touched by the cemetery; however, the interest earned on the investments in the trust may be used by the cemetery for ongoing maintenance of the grounds. Today, we are required to set aside 10% (and as of 1993, a minimum of $25.00 per sale) of all property sold into a Care and Maintenance Trust Fund. The goal of the trusting laws is to ensure that when a cemetery is completely “sold-out” that there will always be a corpus of funds available to create enough earnings to perpetually maintain the property. We are required to use an outside Trustee to protect those dollars from being improperly used. We have a bank trust department that works with us in investing the funds, and only distributing earnings on a quarterly basis to us. Every year, the Trustee is required to report the trust activities to the state of Florida. The state also audits the cemetery books every two or three years, providing another layer of assurance that the funds are being placed correctly into the trust.

Many customers of Universal Hair Studio in Lutz have been coming to the salon for stylish haircuts for over 10 years – since it opened in 2005. “We have so many loyal customers to be thankful for,” said Cheryl Lynn, owner/stylist at the salon. “Some days it’s hard to believe we’ve been here for 11 years.” One reason Universal Hair Studio has been so successful is because Cheryl loves her work and is a hands-on operator. “I know all of our customers personally,” said Cheryl. “Customers keep coming back because we are very good stylists, offer personal care and make sure guests feel comfortable and at home.” Cheryl opened Universal Hair Studio after she and her husband, Randal, built a house in Land O’ Lakes. Before they moved to Pasco County, Cheryl owned a hair salon for nine years in Tampa, close to MacDill Air Force Base. She sold that salon to be closer to her new home. It wasn’t long before Cheryl opened Universal Hair Studio, buying an office condominium at St. Rd. 54 and Foggy Ridge Road, located behind Bay Breeze Car Wash. “It’s a great spot that’s centrally located for our customers who live in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel,” said Cheryl. She named her new salon Universal Hair Studio to communicate her goal of providing

hair services for people of all ethnicities. “My salon has been multicultural since day one,” says Cheryl. “I called it Universal because is doesn’t matter what gender, or race, someone is. We are all trained stylists experienced at working with all types of hair.” Cheryl explained that her customers are African American, Muslim, Puerto Rican, Caucasian, Asian and Caribbean Islanders. The studio also cuts hair for men, especially retired men, and welcomes walk-ins. “Customers like that they can get in and out of our salon fast, and that our staff is always professional and never gossips,” said Cheryl. “We provide quality services at affordable prices, in an environment that is always clean. Plus, we offer senior citizen discounts.” Working alongside Cheryl is Yvonne Davis, who moved here from Miami with 20 years experience. Stylist Latonya Spiner specializes in braids and weaving, and has been a stylist for five years. The low-end estimate to repair the sinkhole is $103,000, but Turbiville said the cost could be nearly double that amount, based on the county’s previous experience in repairing sinkholes in other locations. He also noted the sinkhole repair would likely take six weeks to eight weeks, after a new lease agreement is executed. “We’re hopeful that (the park) will be open sometime this year; that’s the best I can say,”Turbiville said. Flooding on Lake Park’s central road also must be addressed,Turbiville said. Two lakes situated near the flooded road have begun to merge — caused by a significant drop-off in water pumping by the aquifer, he said. “Those lakes are...filling up almost like a bathtub, and they’re going over the road, so about nine (months) to 10 months out of the year, we have a couple of feet of water over the road,”Turbiville explained. “Ever since 2013, the pumping has

Runners begin arriving around 6 a.m., to register or pick up their packets. The 5k is a chip-timed event. The race, which originates at the Lutz Community Center, has been going on for decades. And, many of the runners have been racing since they were young, Donovan said. “I don’t really run anymore, I shuffle,” he joked. The cake and pie competition also tends to get a lot of repeat entries. Last year’s cake and pie contest drew 28 entries, including a 5-pound apple pie, a cake shaped like a fish and another with the look of the community’s iconic train depot. Wilma Lewis had eight entries in the competition. And, Shirley Simmons entered her famous, made-from-scratch pound cake, which fetched $75 in the auction after the parade. Those interested in entering the competition should touch base with D’Amico to find out the various categories. The parade — which has an old-fashioned feel — tends to attract scouts, schools, politicians, community organizations, law enforcement and local businesses. It also draws a wide assortment of vehicles, ranging from antique fire trucks to flatbed trucks, military vehicles to classic cars, and bicycles to convertibles. The parade route, which goes down LutzLake Fern Road, turns to go in front of the Lutz Branch Library. “We have 11 different trophies,” Benton said.“We have one for antique vehicles. One for bicycle entry. One for commercial. One for a family entry. Most comical. Most patriotic. Neighborhood entry. Walking unit.Youth entry. Judge’s favorite. Grand Marshal’s Choice.” She thinks people enjoy the Fourth of July festivities because it’s a fun way to start off the holiday. “It’s crafted after an old-timey Fourth in the park,” Benton said.

As a result, the lakes and the wetlands within the park have come back up, so what you have now is a much wetter park than you did even five years ago,” Turbiville said. Turbiville believes the nearly three-quarter-mile stretch of road will have to be repaved and elevated. The estimated cost for the project, which is about $850,000, would likely fall on the shoulders of Hillsborough County, he said. The project would require culverts or some other type of system that would allow water to flow underneath the road, he noted. Other long-term Lake Park improvements include renovations to the park’s main offices and restrooms, and upgrades to the concession area. Lake Park, a 589-acre site, features an archery range, a BMX bicycle track, two equestrian arenas and a radio-controlled car track. Based on revenue figures from 20142015, the park typically nets about $10,000 per month in revenue from park-goers. Due to Lake Park’s closure,Turbiville said most of the park’s employees have been temporarily reassigned to other locations within the regional park system.A skeleton crew remains at Lake Park for upkeep and maintenance.

But, she does have a request:“Please no highpowered water guns,” she said. “Because they have soaked little babies before,” she explained, and that’s not cool, she added. Benton is in charge of getting the parade entries lined up along the route. The Land O’ Lakes Gators Athletics Foundation inducted five new members to the school’s athletics Hall of Fame during a dinner ceremony on May 24. The inductees for the 2016 class were: the 2002-2003 girls soccer team, which won a state title; Jerry English, a longtime varsity softball coach; Lt. Col. Rhett Hierlmeier, a standout dual-sport athlete; Dianne McClendon, a key member of the Land O’ Lakes softball team during the late ‘70s; and Phil Teston, the school’s first player drafted in to the Major League Baseball. The ceremony marked the school’s fourth Hall of Fame induction class, which began in 2013 after the Gators Athletics Foundation was established as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The foundation’s purpose is to “raise funds through donations and fundraising events for the direct benefit of the athletic programs at Land O’ Lakes High School.” Antonio Tarver, a former World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion, was the keynote speaker for the ceremony, which drew about 180 people. Jerry Brewster, vice president of the Gators Athletics Foundation, estimates that $12,000 to $15,000 was raised, several thousand dollars less than in previous years. “The first three years we raised about $20,000 per year and so now the foundation has over $60,000 in there, but this past year, we just didn’t get as many sponsors as we had in prior years so...it was a little light from what we would’ve liked to have,” Brewster said. Funds raised through the foundation are currently being allocated to build an athletic

Likely a $1 million to $1.5 million project, a field house would be the first step in upgrading the school’s athletic facilities in an effort to put it on par with other large schools throughout Tampa area. Ideally, features inside the field house could include boys and girls locker rooms, coaches’ rooms and a training area, Brewster said.

Hall of Fame bio 2002-2003 GIRLS SOCCER TEAM The Lady Gators capped off a 26-3 record in 2003 by winning the Class 2A state championship after they defeated Riviera Beach Suncoast High School 1-0. The Gators’ Stacy Bishop became the county’s all-time leading scorer during that season, while goalkeeper Shannon Aitken set the county’s career shutout mark. After the season, longtime girls soccer coach Vicki King was awarded the National Soccer Coaches Association coach of the year award.

“We’ve got a vision of what we’d want it to look like,” the foundation’s vice president said.“We want to put an actual Hall of Fame (in) the field house, so when kids walk to the

gym everyday, they have to go through the Hall of Fame; we want it to be something where kids can be inspired.” In addition to nearly $70,000 in the foundation’s coffers, there’s an additional $150,000 commitment from a few of the foundation’s board members to help facilitate a field house project. The organization also is in discussions with the Pasco County School Board to possibly create a joint partnership to spearhead a new athletic facility. Meanwhile, in the next few months, the athletics foundation will deliberate candidates for next year’s Hall of Fame class. Typically, each class features a coach or administrator, a lifetime achievement award, one female athlete and two male athletes. Both athletic prowess and the individual’s character are taken into account in evaluating Hall of Fame candidates, Brewster said.

FHSAA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RETIRES Florida High School Athletic Association executive director Dr. James “Roger” Dearing announced his retirement last week. Dearing, who held the role for eight years, will step down once a new hire is made. The FHSAA’s Board of Directors will begin a nationwide search after the next board meeting June 13 and June 14. In a press release, Dearing said it was “simply time” to retire. “After consulting with my family and my closest of friends, I feel it is in the best interest of all if I step aside, and give someone else the absolute privilege and honor of taking on this role,” he said. Under Dearing’s leadership, the FHSAA reduced membership fees to $25 per school. He also helped steer media partnerships with Bright House Sports Network and the NFHS Network, making championship games available for viewing online. Moreover, student-athlete participation in the FHSAA’s 32 sports increased by about 33 percent since he was named FHSAA’s executive director. Prior to working for the FHSAA, Dearing served as Manatee County Superintendent from 2003 to 2009.

Rampf posted a career-best time of 10:23.86, earning All-America honors with her fifth-place showing. Her finals time was slightly under two seconds faster than the time she posted in the meet’s preliminaries. Rampf, who became Saint Leo’s first cross-country All-American earlier this sea-

Kevin Merrell, a former standout on Steinbrenner High School’s baseball team and current shortstop on the University of South Florida’s baseball team, has been named a first team All-American Athletic Conference selection by the conference’s coaches. Merrell, a sophomore, leads USF in batting average (.309) and on-base percentage (.405), and is third on the team in stolen bases (16). Merrell was a four-year letter winner at Steinbrenner, and batted .462 during his senior year. He was also a standout track athlete and currently holds the school’s 100-meter dash record at 10.6 seconds, which he set in 2014.

FISHING CLUB GRANTS AVAILABLE The Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Foundation has announced the availability of grants of up to $500 per school to Student Angler Federation (SAF)-affiliated

high school fishing clubs in Florida. The grants are aimed at establishing new clubs or expanding clubs. The grants can be used by school teams or clubs to pay SAF dues for participating students, cover the cost of running teamsponsored tournaments, purchase student jerseys or other club costs. t a place that can trace its history back to the 1880s, Saint Anthony Catholic School marked another milestone on June 3 with a ceremony to bless the completion of a renovated building constructed in 1922. It was the second time in two years that Saint Anthony Catholic School paused to celebrate the completion of a construction project. The first event occurred on Feb. 5, 2015, when the Rev. Robert N. Lynch, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, presided over the dedication of the school’s new building.That building, designed to architecturally match the existing building, was funded through the Diocese’s Forward in Faith Capital Campaign. At last week’s event, Abbott Isaac Camacho, of Saint Leo Abbey, presided over the ceremony to bless the school’s newly renovated 1922 building.The Saint Anthony Parish community is covering the cost of the $1.8 million project. Those gathered at last week’s ceremony expressed gratitude for the education the school provides. Retired U.S. Army Col. Peter Quinn was among those attending the ceremony. His son, Gabriel, just graduated from the school, and his twin daughters, Faith and Grace, are seventh-graders. “We got here three years ago. This is a pearl of joy for us,” Quinn said. He noted that he searched all of the Diocese, including St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Brandon, before choosing to enroll his children at Saint Anthony. “I wanted a place where my parish life and my kids’ school life would be one and the same. “When I found this place, with the sisters in residence, that was it. “The surrounding community is just so supportive,” Quinn said. Leo Brand and Kyle Christmas, both members of the Knights of Columbus, were there, dressed in their full regalia. They came to present the school with a gift: A pole and a stand, to hold the school’s banner. “They’ve always borrowed ours for years,” Brand said. So, the Knights of Columbus San Antonio Council 1768 decided to purchase one for the school, he said. Christmas noted that one of his family members helped build the school decades ago.“He’s got his name on one of the bricks up on the top of the roof,” he said. Christmas said he’s pleased to see that the school is building for the future. “It’s nice to see that they are expanding and that they’re getting busy enough to expand, that people are taking advantage of a Catholic education,” Christmas said. Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader was at the event — but not in his role as an elected leader. He has closer ties to the church and school. “I’m an alumnus. It’s my parish. My church. It’s a great part of our community. My parents were actually married in the church,” Schrader said. The renovation of the 1922 school building marks a proud moment for the parish and school, Schrader said. “The community just came together.They recognized the importance of a Catholic education,” Schrader said. She’s pleased that her children, Faith, Vincent and Nolan, attend Saint Anthony, and that her family is part of the school’s community. “The community around here, the support, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s amazing,” DiMaria said. Abbott Camacho presided over the ceremony, but others took part, as well. Rev. Garry Welsh, the current pastor, Sister Alice Ottapurackal, the current principal, and Sister Roberta Bailey, the Prioress at Holy Name Monastery and former principal of the school, also offered remarks. Students took part, too. Hannah Fox, led the assembly in “Joyful, Joyful,We Adore You,” Lindsay Golliday read a selection from scripture, and Aiden Fox and Adeline Shiver were altar servers. Abbott Camacho reminded those gathered that “one of the characteristics of us Benedictines (who founded the school) is to welcome the other, as Christ, no matter who the other is. To see in them, the image of Christ. “It’s not about the teachers. It’s not about the good reputation of the school. It’s about the other. Can we see Christ in the other, no matter their background? If we see in them, Christ, things start to change for good,” Abbott Camacho said. Sister Bailey recalled Saint Anthony Catholic School’s rich history, and noted that it has faced some tough times. “We owe a great deal of credit to the pastors that were in this area. There was a day when the principal and the bookkeeper would come up with budget, based on the tuition that we knew we could collect. And, whatever we thought we couldn’t collect, we gave that debt to the pastors, and they figured out how to support the school,” Sister Bailey said. But through prayer, God’s blessings, the help of the Diocese, and the generosity of the parish and community, there’s now a new school building and a renovated building, Sister Ottapurackal said. “Our school looks beautiful, and it is ready for 21st century learning. We are proud of how it came out, because of God’s blessing and people’s help,” the principal said.

PREVENT ONLINE FRAUD In recognition of Internet Safety Month, Central Bank, located at Bruce B. Downs and County Line Road, offers these seven tips to help consumers avoid online fraud: • Keep your computers and mobile devices up to date. Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats. • Set strong passwords. A strong password is at least eight characters long and includes a

mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. • Watch out for phishing scams. These scams use fraudulent emails and websites to trick users into disclosing private account or login information. Do not click on links or open any attachments or pop-up screens from unfamiliar sources. (Forward phishing emails to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at spam@uce.gov). • Keep personal information personal. Hackers can use social media profiles to figure out your passwords and answer those security questions in the password reset tools. Lock down your privacy settings and avoid posting things like birthdays, addresses, mother’s maiden name and so on. Be wary of requests to connect from strangers. • Secure your internet connection. Always protect your home wireless network with a password.When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, be cautious about the information you send over it. • Shop safely. Before shopping online, make sure the website uses secure technol-

ogy. When you are at the checkout screen, verify that the web address begins with https. Also, check to see if a tiny locked padlock symbol appears on the page. • Read the site’s privacy policies.These policies tell you how the site protects the personal information it collects.
