Ice welcomed at new sports complex
By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com
By the end of next year, State Road 56 will be more crowded than ever. A new Mercedes dealership.A long-awaited outlet mall and the different stores it will bring. Yet another hotel, this time 120 rooms. Not bad for a road that, just a little more than a decade ago, didn’t even exist. Joining all that, however, is an ice and sports complex so big, it might make existing facilities in Ellenton, Oldsmar and maybe even Brandon a bit jealous. Apartment developer Gordie Zimmermann and his colleagues Z Mitch LLC, closed on 13 acres of land last week on
Cypress Ridge Boulevard for $2.6 million, where they plan to build a 155,500-squarefoot ice and sports complex complete with four pads of ice, a restaurant, and room for other sports in the community. Zimmermann’s development team is investing more than $20 million in the project, all so that Zimmermann’s hockey team — and other teams like it — won’t have to travel so far anymore to find a sheet of ice in Florida. “I was operating down in the Brandon facility, and I noticed that the adult hockey program had taken over,” Zimmermann said of Ice Sports Forum, a two-pad complex he also owns. “The kids had limited ice time See ICE, page 16

A day to remember For the first time ever, Land O’ Lakes hosted a Memorial Day parade, paying tribute to the men and women throughout the country’s history who gave their lives to protect the freedoms Americans enjoy. The parade started inside Dupree Lakes, continued down Ehren Cutoff, and ended at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home. It might have been morning, but it was hot for Michelle Stanziani of Wesley Chapel, right, and her daughter Meghan, 6. To see more pictures from the parade, turn to Page 20.

The names of Land O’ Lakes High School’s Class of 2014 are reprinted in this week’s Laker, along with advertisements from businesses who support this annual graduation section. Unfortunately, last week’s Laker published the names of 2013 graduates from the high school. This occurred because an incorrect file was sent to The Laker, and the mistake was not discovered until after the wrong list was published. Thankfully, names and photos of Land O’ Lakes valedictorians and salutatorians were correct, and are published again today next to the names of their fellow graduates. We are reprinting this correct list of graduates in both The Laker and Lutz News because many Lutz readers are friends with Land O’ Lakes students and their families. Land O’ Lakes seniors received a fourpage reprint of this special section in time for their graduation ceremonies last Thursday at the University of South Florida Sun Dome. This reprint was included in the envelope with their diploma, and also distributed with the commencement program. I want to thank Ric Mellin, principal at Land O’ Lakes High, for his prompt assistance in getting the word out to students and their families that the correct list would be republished in this week’s paper.

Pasco County Schools’ $1.3 million summer school program this year will serve 6,580 students. That’s an increase of 1,820 over last summer’s rolls, according to district officials. This year’s programs also will reach younger children, and will give older students more time to work on recovering course credits. School board member Steve Luikart applauded the expanded program. “The need is there,” Luikart said.“We’re doing everything we can to help more kids.”
The district is piloting new programs for kindergarteners and first graders focusing on literacy, and for second graders emphasizing mathematics. The literacy pilot will serve about 390 students, and the mathematics pilot will serve about 400 children. The students will come from Title 1 schools, which are schools that qualify for federal funding because they have a large percentage of children from poor families. Another pilot will focus on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, otherwise known as STEM. It will serve approximately 45 third- and fourth-grade students from Fox Hollow, Schrader, and
Gulf Highlands elementary schools, and will be held at Gulf Highlands. The district’s summer reading camp will continue to target third graders.About 700 children are expected to receive the additional help. The media centers at each of the summer camp locations will be open to all students on those days. The district also will be using migrant camps for kindergarten through 12thgraders at eight east Pasco schools, to help close the achievement gap. The program will serve about 45 students, an increase of 15 from last year. See SUMMER, page 16
Sandy Graves balances home of today, yesteryear Getting to know You
Getting to know Sandy Graves What song on the radio will make you sing out loud? “Happy” from Pharrell Williams. I think everyone is listening to that song right now. But another one I actually love and used to play a lot is “Radioactive” (by Imagine Dragons) because sometimes I feel like people aren’t returning my calls because I’m radioactive.
By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com
T
here’s a lot someone can say about Sandy Graves that people in the area might not know already. But that’s what happens when you live in the same house you grew up in, in an area you watched grow from a population counted in the hundreds to one now tracked by the tens of thousands. Sandy’s community work is well known. She helps with a puppet ministry with Van Dyke Church of Lutz. She’s very active politically with the Republican Party. And she is putting in a lot of hours trying to redevelop Heritage Park at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center that would include an outdoor stage. But one thing these same people may not know about Sandy Graves is that she spent 11 years as a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines. “I was going to Auburn University, and I had a sorority sister that had graduated the year before,” Sandy said. “When she came back, she was a flight attendant. And it sounded good to me. It was exciting, and I wanted to travel.” Back then, Eastern Airlines dominated the travel market between New York and Florida, all during a time when luxury and convenience were staples of the flight industry — no matter how long the trip was. “It was not as glamorous as some people might think,” Sandy said.“Especially when you had an hour-long flight, and had to throw out a meal to everyone, clean it up and throw it all away before we landed.”
COURTESY OF SANDY GRAVES
Sandy Graves, left, makes no secret about her political work. She’s been heavily involved in the Republican party over the years, including work on campaigns for Gov. Rick Scott, center, and former state Sen. Mike Fasano.
Sandy left Eastern not long before the company folded in 1991. But instead of returning home to Land O’ Lakes, Sandy instead stayed in Atlanta where she lived during her time with Eastern, and became a youth minister there. By 1995, however, Sandy and husband Steve decided it was time to move home, and did — eventually ending up in the same 1950s house she grew up in. But that took some adjusting. “It’s strange at first, because this was my bedroom, but now this is my bedroom,” she said. “But we remodeled it and put our stamp on it. It has a different personality, because now it represents the grown-up me.” Family remains important to Sandy, especially when it comes to siblings. She spends as much time as she can with her nieces and nephews, many times taking them camping at a place she and Steve maintain in North Carolina. With the horseback riding and canoeing, it reminds her an awful lot of life in Land O’ Lakes before the boom. “I used to ride horseback all where Lake

Padgett is now, and back where Pine View Elementary is now, as well as lots where Connerton and Avila are now, too,” Sandy said. Harvey’s Hardware on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard was where Sandy and her family would get soft drinks and even gas. Grocery shopping was done at the beginning of Ehren Cutoff where LOL Transport & Moving Inc., is now. Anything else required a trip to Tampa, and since Interstate 75 hadn’t been built yet, that meant a long trip down U.S. 41. Pasco did have its own amenities, however, and Sandy has lots of memories when it comes to Quail Hollow Golf Course. “My dad would join a bunch of his friends there to play golf, and he would drop me, my brother and my sister off at the pool,” Sandy said.“It was always so exciting, because we could go inside, then, and run tabs for things like hamburgers. We felt like royalty doing that.” Land O’ Lakes is no longer the community off a small two-lane road connecting Tampa and Brooksville. It’s a bustling com-
If you were elected President of the United States, what is the first thing you’d do? I’d cut every single department in the United States by about 5 percent. When they did the sequester thing, they said they had to close down the Grand Canyon, but how do you close down the Grand Canyon? Do you throw a sheet over it? If you could fly anywhere you’ve never been? Portugal and Spain. I would love to see the Mediterranean. If you could appoint someone locally as President, who would it be? munity of its own, which can’t seem to stop growing. Sandy Graves, however, still has that smalltown attitude. And she works hard to ensure the identity of Land O’ Lakes is never lost. “Everybody knew each other growing up, and I could name all my grade school teachers,” Sandy said.“It’s not like that anymore, but now we have a chance to turn it into something special.”

Liberty eighth-grader earns ‘primer lugar’ at Spanish spelling bee By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
An eighth-grader at Liberty Middle School tied for first place in a recent spelling bee.To get there, however, she had to spell words like “piel” — that’s “skin” in Spanish. Catherine Weng shared top honors at the Spanish spelling bee held May 15 at the Roland Park magnet school. Roland Park was one of 16 Hillsborough County schools that participated in the event, which featured categories for beginners and second-tier Spanish speakers in both native and non-native divisions. But this isn’t the first time Weng has found success in the spelling bee. She won first place last year while taking introductory Spanish classes. Weng competed in the Spanish I category for non-native speakers this year, and earned the tie when she and another student exhausted all the words prepared for the bee. “It’s really great getting to go back to school and say,‘Hey guys, I won first!’”Weng said. Weng’s first language is English, but she also speaks a little Mandarin at home. Being familiar with another language helps her acclimate to learning a new one, she said. And because Spanish words often are spelled the way they sound,Weng found success easier in the Spanish spelling bee. But that doesn’t mean it’s a matter of just sounding out words and collecting a trophy. To spell Spanish words in the competition correctly, Weng also had to mention a letter’s accent mark by declaring “con acento” — or “with accent” — after that particular letter. Failing to designate the proper accents meant the spelling would be considered incorrect. And, like all languages, some words don’t

follow the expected protocol. For a non-native speaker, the challenge is knowing the foreign words well enough to recognize when to go with how the word sounds, and when the spelling is somewhat different.

According to Katie Smith, one of the Spanish teachers at Liberty Middle School, the Spanish spelling bee benefits students who are trying to grasp Spanish for the first time.
“The spelling bee itself helps the kids really recognize some of the nuances of the language,” she said. By understanding where the words have accents, for example, they can improve their pronunciation and speak the language properly. But it also helps those students who are native speakers, Smith said. Many children who come from Spanish-speaking households don’t necessarily get to write it.They grow up learning both Spanish words and English spelling rules, which can be confusing. The competition allows them to recognize the spelling protocol for Spanish, and helps keep the rules for both languages separate. Weng joined fellow schoolmates Tania Sexauer and Jack Richardson, who competed in the beginning Spanish category. And while they didn’t finish as high as Weng, Smith said they should be very proud to have advanced through Liberty’s difficult internal competition to compete at the final event. “That’s the thing I kept stressing to them,” she said.“Even though you may not have made it to the top five (in the spelling bee at Roland Park), it’s really OK, because the fact that you were able to go and represent the school is a big accomplishment in and of itself.” The beginning Spanish classes are particularly large, with Weng, who has only been learning Spanish for a couple of years, plans to continue studying the language when she enters high school. But for now she’s excited that her studying paid off with another first-place finish, and the Spanish spelling bee has helped her learn a new language. “I had done it last year so I knew it was coming up again this year, so I really made sure I knew how to spell the words correctly when we were learning them,”Weng said. “I think it’s a great experience. I think it really helps me focus on Spanish.”

ARLINGTON AT NORTHWOOD SOLD, RENAMED
A Chicago-based real estate company has bought its second community in the Tampa Bay area, taking over the former Arlington at Northwood, a 312-unit complex in Wesley Chapel. BES Northwood Fund IX LLC, a company associated with Sherman Residential, finalized its sale of the high-end apartments May 15 for $36.1 million. That is nearly $10 million more than what the community’s previous owner, Protea Northwood Apartments, purchased the complex for in 2006 soon after it was built. The new owners have brought in a new name for the complex as well, calling it Enclave at Wiregrass, according to the company’s website. Enclave is considered a Class A apartment complex, meaning that it was built in the last
20 years or so, and comes with a number of luxury-style amenities. Sherman, on its website, says it’s looking to buy apartment communities that have at least 150 units, comprehensive amenity packages, and strong locations, among other things. Sherman already owns the Enclave at Tranquility Lake in Riverview, as well as 13 other communities in Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina,Tennessee and Texas, according to its website. BES Northwood purchased the property through a $22.5 million loan. It’s located at 1930 Devonwood Drive, just off State Road 56, not far from The Shops at Wiregrass. This is Pasco County’s largest property sale since August 2012 when Seneca at Cypress Creek was sold for $62.3 million. Units in that Lutz community sold for $138,100 each, while units at the new Enclave sold for $115,700 each.

Robbie Radant, a vice president with the company, said 7-Eleven is cutting loose stores like the Lutz one not because it’s underperforming, but because it no longer fits with its overall goals. “There are many nice sites in this package that simply do not fit 7-Eleven’s current business model,” Radant said in a release.“All of these stores have solid merchandise sales, and should provide good opportunities for the right buyers.” 7-Eleven is looking to part ways with 31 stores in Florida, along with 14 in Virginia, six in Massachusetts and Illinois, three in Texas and two in New York, Internet, among other activities. Sessions run from June 23-26 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., or July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $90. • Health Careers — Participants can take on simulations and other hands-on activities related to the school’s paramedic, nursing, dental and radiography programs. They also can become CPR-certified. The Lutz 7-Eleven opened in 1987 with a 3,100-square-foot store along State Road 54 when it was still a two-lane road. It includes a 10-year fuel contract. A dozen eighth-graders at Countryside Montessori Charter School have experienced something few, if any, of their peers have in the Land O’ Lakes area. The soon-to-be-graduates were among the first to take on the task of interning at local businesses throughout the week of May 19. They spent several hours of their day at a variety of businesses in the local area, from schools to pet day care centers. The students developed their own internship preparation while their teacher, Bobbianne Grant, implemented the idea of gaining real-world experience in a range of professional settings. This particular program was the first time the school has allowed students to participate in internships with a goal of achieving a better feel for their future professions. Based on its success this year, Countryside plans to continue the internship program next year for seventh and eighth graders. “The internships give the eighth-grade students the opportunity to experience the work force before going into high school,” said Grant, the Countryside teacher leading the project. Grant gave these students, including this writer, the ability to successfully experience different work atmospheres and assist in each company’s needs. Many students said they had a positive experience and learned a great deal of work

skills. Their feedback has given the school valuable input to help its students in future internship programs in high school and college. The students who participated in the program said they appreciated the opportunity that was given to them, and hope they will be able to engage in a similar task in their futures. “Internships are like an opportunity for us to see the real world,” said Devyn Dacus, 13, one of a dozen students that participated in the internships. “Since we are not yet adults, internships are one of the few chances we have to see the work force.”

Dacus interned at Countryside Montessori Academy, one of two preschool and kindergarten divisions related to the Montessori program. It’s located on Carson Drive, a few miles from the main charter school campus at Ehren Cutoff. “At the preschool I was interning at, I had a great experience,” Dacus added. “It made me realize how tedious it actually is to care for toddlers.” Her classmate, Abby Kuskin, did her internship at Grace Family Church in Lutz and Black Saddle Stables in Odessa and Land O’ Lakes. She said the experiences were cool
and interesting, and it could help her achieve a dream of owning her own nonprofit children’s ministry home. The school’s seventh graders also were allowed to participate in internships by shadowing the elementary school teachers at Countryside and experiencing a school day from the teacher’s point of view. “The shadowing was a great experience,” said Julia Leck, one of the participating seventh graders in the project. The program — led by Grant and her colleagues at Countryside — allowed the interns to gain experiences and memories they can apply to their own future careers. Ashley Schrader spent a week as an intern at The Laker/Lutz News as part of Countryside Montessori Charter School’s careers project.

PUBLISHER’S COLUMN
Deployed on Veterans Day, home by Memorial Day By Diane Kortus Publisher
Sometimes things happen in life that work out better than one could ever plan. If you are a regular reader of my column, you know that my son, Andy Mathes, was married on a beautiful autumn day last November in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. At the time, Andy was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his new wife, Erin, had just one week together after they married before Andy deployed for Afghanistan. Andy and the other Marines in his unit left Camp Lejeune on Veterans Day. I remember thinking it odd they were leaving on that holiday Monday because I assumed our military would honor its troops by making it a day of rest for all servicemen and women, except those actively engaged in war. COURTESY OF U.S. MARINE CORPS GUNNERY SGT. NEIL ROSELLI When I asked Andy why they left on Erin Mathes welcomes her husband, Andy, the day he arrived home from Afghanistan. bars to her husband’s uniform. Of course, I would have loved to been there, too. I imagine most mothers with newly married sons go through what I’m feeling these days. After almost 26 years of being Andy’s mother, I’ve been trumped. Don’t get me wrong. I love Erin and couldn’t be happier with Andy’s choice. Erin is a smart, caring, thoughtful and beautiful young woman who obviously adores my son as much as he adores her. I understand that she is the other woman in my son’s heart, and the one who now takes top ranking. I also know this is how it is meant to be and, in time, I will fully acclimate to the notion that Andy has a wife and I have a daughter-in-law. In the meantime I’m learning that being a mother-in-law has some perks. Erin sent me a handwritten note for Mother’s Day with this wonderful message: “I’ve heard when you want to know how a man is going to treat you, you look at the way he treats his mother. I knew Andy would be a wonderful husband from the way he talked about your relationship. He could openly communicate with you, ask for advice, engage in meaningful conversation with you. I knew this could easily translate to a successful marriage together.” Erin’s Mother’s Day note made me cry. But it also made me happy because my young daughter-in-law already understands that the bonds between a mother and son will someday transfer to the bonds between a husband and wife. I know that if Erin is blessed with a son, she will raise him with love, trust, honesty and empathy. She already is aware that the love she has for her son will one day pass to another woman. And like her, this woman will value and respect all that she did as a mother to make her husband the kind of man that my son has become for her.

A shy girl learning to love Meet Sylwin, a 10-month-old girl who needs a forever home. Abandoned as a kitten, she is very shy, but comes around with love and patience. She would do best in a home with other cats, as she quickly fits in and loves to play. She is easily overlooked due to being timid, but deserves to be with people that she can learn to love and trust. She will come running for treats when she hears the treat bag, and loves wet food. She currently sneaks into her foster’s bed and sleeps at the foot of the bed at night. She loves to be petted, and purrs so loud, she sounds like a motorboat. With time and patience, and the right home, Sylwin will blossom into the perfect companion.
If you would like to invite Sylwin into your family, email Cat Crusaders at adopt@tampacatcrusaders.org. For more information about other adoptable cats, visit TampaCatCrusaders.org.

POLITICAL AGENDA SEND POLITICAL NEWS TO MHINMAN@LAKERLUTZNEWS.COM
YOUNG ENDORSES BURGESS
House District 38 candidate Danny Burgess has won yet another endorsement, this time from House deputy majority leader and whip Dana Young. Young, R-Tampa, praised the former Zephyrhills mayor as being a “principled conservative, community leader, dedicated husband and new father.” Burgess faces Minnie Diaz in the Republican primary for the seat currently held by Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel. Burgess raised $4,225 in April, according to state election records, bringing his total campaign account to just under $45,000. Diaz collected $140 during the same period, bringing her total to $3,000. Barring anyone else entering the race, the winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Beverly Ledbetter, who raised $2,473 in April bringing her total for the November election to $8,464.
FASANO OFFICIALLY IN TAX COLLECTOR RACE
How has former state Sen. Mike Fasano done in his new job as Pasco County’s tax collector? He’ll get a chance to find out as he files to seek out his first full term in office. Fasano finished the needed paperwork May 23, and has yet to draw an opponent. Gov. Rick Scott appointed him to the position in 2013 following the death of longtime tax collector Mike Olson. Amanda Murphy, D-New Port Richey, replaced him in the Senate. Olson beat Republican challenger Ed Blommel in 2012 after outraising the Republican nearly 2-to-1. Fasano spent 10 years in the state Senate, and another eight years in the state House, serving as the majority leader there in 2000.
NOCCO HOSTS MOORE FUNDRAISER
Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco and others are hosting a meet-and-greet for Pasco County Commission candidate Mike Moore June 4 at 6 p.m., at Lonzalo’s, 3104 Town Ave., in Trinity. Joining the gathering are attorneys Craig Laporte and Barbara Wilhite. Moore is seeking Pat Mulieri’s seat in the county’s District 2 race, which includes other Republican challengers like Ken Littlefield and Bob Robertson. The winner of that primary is expected to face Democrat Erika Remsberg in the November election.
LEGG ENDORSES WILSON RE-ELECTION BID
Pasco County commissioner Henry Wilson Jr. has picked up an endorsement from state Sen. John Legg in his re-election bid. “Henry is a strong advocate for Pasco’s business and families,” Legg, R-Lutz, said in a release. “He has and will continue to put Pasco’s best interests first.” Wilson, who at this point is facing a potential open primary in August against newcomer Mike Wells Jr., already has received endorsements from other politicians like Richard Corcoran, R-Land O’ Lakes; state Sen. Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby; and Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.
SWIFTMUD GOVERNING BOARD ELECTS OFFICERS
The Southwest Florida Water Management District governing board has elected new officers for the coming year, led by Michael Babb as chair. Babb, who represents Hillsborough County, is president of Two Rivers Ranch Inc., in Thonotosassa. He was first appointed to the board in June 2011. Other officers include Randall Maggard as vice chair, Jeffery Adams as secretary and David Dunbar as treasurer. Maggard, who represents Pasco County, is vice president of Sonny’s Discount Appliances Inc., in Dade City. He was first appointed to the board in October 2011. Adams, representing Pinellas County, is an attorney and partner with Abbey Adams LLP in St. Petersburg. He was first appointed in April 2010. Dunbar represents both Hillsborough and Pinellas, and is chairman of Synovus Bank of Florida in Palm Harbor. He was appointed in July 2013. The new officers serve a one-year term beginning 24 hours before the next governing board meeting, set for June 24. The board members are unpaid volunteers appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. They set policy for the organization, commonly known as Swiftmud, with its mission to manage the water and related resources of west central Florida, to meet the needs of current and future water users while still protecting the environment.
ELECTIONS OPEN HOUSE
Hillsborough County supervisor of elections Craig Latimer will host an open house June 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at 12022 Anderson Road in Tampa. For information, call (813) 744-5900, or visit VoteHillsborough.org.
State keeping close eye on child labor laws this summer The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
As Florida teens begin preparing for summer jobs, the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation’s Child Labor Program is working to educate teens and Florida businesses about state and federal child labor law requirements. The program enforces the Florida Child Labor Law as well as the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, according to a release. Both were designed to protect the health, education and welfare of teenagers while in the workplace, and to safeguard their well-being. Two main areas child labor laws focus on are how many hours a teen works, and the types of jobs they are working in. “Summer jobs provide a great opportunity for Florida teens to gain valuable work experience and training, and we want to make sure they are able to learn these skills in a safe environment,” said Ken Lawson, secretary of DBPR, in a release. In 2013, more than 225,000 teens between 16 and 19 were on the job, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The DBPR does recommend some tips to teens working this summer, to be sure they
are working for a boss who is following the law. • Know your rights to a safe and healthy workplace. • Learn to recognize hazards at work, and speak up when you see them. • Participate in training programs at work or request training if none is offered. • Use safe work practices. • Learn where you can get information about child labor laws, health and safety, and your rights. In Florida, teenagers can enter the work force at 14, and work up to eight hours each day and 40 hours per week between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the summer. However, they cannot work more than six consecutive days. Teens 16 and 17 can work unlimited hours, however, they cannot work more than six consecutive days. All minors are required to have a 30minute uninterrupted break for every four consecutive hours worked. For more information on child labor laws, including waivers, hour limitations, exemptions and safety requirements, call (850) 488-3131.

Old-fashioned service for printing and shipping special to The Laker / Lutz News by Mike Matthew Terry and Jo Anne Moses moved their business to their current location in October 2013 and changed their name to Express Shipping and Business Solutions. Their former business was named Creative Printing, which they started in 1988. It was located just down the road in a building now housing a winery. Since moving into their new location, they’ve expanded their printing and shipping services, put in private mailboxes and added a Federal Express drop. They’re working to add a UPS drop and also a U.S. Postal Service drop soon. Express Shipping is a full-service printing company. They have wide-format printers capable of scanning, and printing blueprints up to 36 inches wide x 5 feet. They also enlarge prints and photographs and have created collages of photographs for both personal and professional customers. High-speed copying is available for color, and black and white, up to 11 x 17 two-sided. They have a graphic artist available to design custom artwork and logos. “We’ve put lots of photographs onto wideformat prints for our customers,” says Jo Anne. They also design and print business cards, novelty items, signs, magnetic car signs and vinyl road signs. A notary service and fax machines make this a one-stop shop for all of your printing and shipping needs. Packing supplies are available for customers who pack their own boxes. In addition, they will pack items for you. “We like to think of ourselves as an old-fashioned general store for printing and shipping,” says Jo Anne. “Come in more than twice and you’ve become a friend.” Terry and Jo Anne go above and beyond to help their customers. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. They pride themselves on fair pricing and outstanding personal service. Many family members work in the store alongside
Terry and Jo Anne Moses
Terry and Jo Anne. They bought their home in Land O’ Lakes in 1987 and started their printing and shipping business in 1988. Jo Anne says they don’t plan on retiring anytime soon. They expect to be servicing customers in the Land O’ Lakes area long into the future. They are very involved in the local community and have contributed to numerous local organizations. Terry is a past president of the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce and has been the Chairman of the Board a number of times. They also sponsored Dancing with our Stars for the last two years. Terry was on the board of directors for the United Cerebral Palsy Organization for almost 10 years. Terry and Jo Anne are both long time members of Sertoma (which stands for Service to Mankind) and their clubs provide both volunteer service and raise thousands of dollars for local charities each year. Terry and Jo Anne have been married for 32 years. Terry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 10 years ago, but that has not stopped him from actively participating in their business. Next time you’re in need of printing or shipping services or supplies stop on in and talk to Terry and Jo Anne Moses at Express Shipping. You’ll be glad you did.

A rendering of the Cypress Creek Ice and Sport Complex features two stories, ample parking, and a canopy to solve rainy day problems when dropping off players.
ICE, from page 1 there, and had to drive 60 to 70 miles to an ice practice.” Zimmermann, in his off-time, coaches the Wiregrass Ice Hawks, a youth team that includes his son, incoming Wiregrass High School junior Luke Zimmermann. The Ice Hawks finished as one of the top youth hockey teams in the state, second only to Mitchell High School. The long drives and fighting for time on the ice limits the younger Zimmermann’s practice time to just a few days a week. But having a sports complex within walking distance of his Seven Oaks home could actually get him out on the ice much more frequently. “I’d probably be going there every day,” Luke Zimmermann, a center for the team, said. Although the facility is tentatively called the Cypress Creek Ice and Sport Complex, Gordie Zimmermann said he’s not opposed to finding a corporate sponsor to buy the naming rights. But even if that happens, it would probably be hard for people not to refer to the facility based on where it is geographically, like Cypress Creek or even Wesley Chapel. And that’s exactly what Jeff Novotny wanted to hear. Not only is he president of American Consulting, which helped with the Zimmermann project, but he’s also president of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, which has been working tirelessly on branding new development along State Road 56 in the name of Wesley Chapel. “I can tell you that the Tampa Bay area has a shortage of ice availability for all age levels,” said Novotny, whose American Consulting headquarters is literally next to the site where the ice complex will be built. “I can count on one hand the number of ice arenas in a one-hour drive. And thanks to the Tampa Bay Lightning, it is better than what it was 15 years ago.” The Lightning was represented by Stanley Cup winner Dave Andreychuk who, coincidentally, went to high school with Zimmermann in Hamilton, Ontario.
Andreychuk stood behind Zimmermann last week during a news conference where the new facility was unveiled, and lent his support to the facility. Although there are plans to build a twopad ice sports complex near The Grove in Wesley Chapel, Zimmermann seemed to dismiss the possibility that the local market could become too saturated with ice. “I think we’ve done our homework,” he said.“I come from an area that has 200 rinks — eight-plexes and six-plexes, and it’s kind of the way of the world to build a minimum of four.” The facility will be two stories tall, complete with two National Hockey League-level ice pads, and one meeting Olympic specifications.A fourth smaller ice pad, which can double as a non-ice sports court, could be made available when needed for young kids just getting their start, or even to help goalies learn position playing, Zimmermann said. A restaurant would be situated on the second floor, with a clear view of all the rinks. “During tournaments, some people’s children’s games might be an hour or two apart, an they can go up and grab a quick snack,” Zimmermann said. “Others might have six- or seven-hour gaps, and they can go to Wiregrass mall, and maybe to a restaurant.” Coming right behind it is a planned 120room hotel expected to close on 3 acres of land this summer, developers said. It would complement offerings already in that area, including an existing Hampton Inn & Suites. Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano joined other government leaders at the presentation in endorsing the project, calling it a crowning achievement to what the county is trying to accomplish in the State Road 56 and Interstate 75 corridor. “Two rinks would’ve been great, three rinks is phenomenal, but with four, everyone is going to want to come here and play this from all around the world,” Mariano said, highlighting potential interest to travel here from groups outside Florida, and even outside the United States.“If you had to go to Canada or down here to play hockey, where would you want to go?”

Applicants sought for Water-Wise Awards The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Tampa Bay Water is now accepting applications for the 2014 Community Water-Wise Awards program until June 30. The program is designed for those whose yards incorporate Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles with an attractive design. It’s open to residents, businesses, builders or other organizations in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, as well as the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg and New Port Richey. The online application is available at TampaBayWaterWise.org, and should include a brief description and photos of an applicant’s water-efficient landscape. Each entry will be evaluated and scored on-site by a Florida-Friendly Landscaping representative during regular business hours in July, but the applicant does not have to be present during the evaluation.
SUMMER, from page 1 A program aimed at giving children a chance to learn through a variety of environmental experiences also is being offered to students from Title 1 schools.About 600 students from Title 1 schools will visit Safety Town, Energy Marine Center, Starkey Ranch, caves, and The Florida Aquarium through the Pasco Environmental Adventure Camp Experience. The district also is providing additional help to middle school students who have not met the requirements to be promoted to the next grade. The district’s course recovery programs have been extended from half-days to full-days to give students more time to master essential content. The district is providing this opportunity for students to get back on track to up to 100 students per Title 1 school, and up to 50 students at other schools. Courses also will be available for high school students needing to recover credits, with seniors being given the highest priority for those opportunities.
“It’s part of our station’s mission to try to minimize our impact on the environment, it’s kind of in our DNA,” said Paul Carrol of WMNF Radio, who won in 2012.“We separately meter the water for the irrigation of the station, so we know exactly how much we use, and we try to take that down to zero.” Winners are awarded with a custommade, mosaic landscape stepping stone during a ceremony presented by county commissioners, city council members or even mayors within their local government. Tampa Bay Water is the largest wholesale water supplier in Florida, providing highquality drinking water to its members, who in turn supply water to more than 2.3 million residents in the Tampa Bay area. Member governments include Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, as well as New Port Richey, St. Petersburg and Tampa. The district also will offer summer school for exceptional student education programs for students who have individual education plans that call for summer instruction. The district will serve summer meals at locations where more than 50 percent of the students are eligible for free or reducedprice meals during the regular school year. District staff members will serve breakfast, lunch and a snack to children through age 18. Transportation also will be provided to summer programs for students who meet the district’s requirements. Teachers can upgrade their skills in the district’s Secondary Literacy Symposium for sixth- through 12th-grade teachers.Teachers will work in collaborative groups to deepen their learning related to the English Language Arts instructional shifts of the newly adopted Florida Standards. Other teachers also will have a chance to strengthen their content knowledge of the standards at the 2014 K-8 Mathematics Institute and at the High School Mathematics Institute.

Saint Leo’s women finish as national tennis semifinalists By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
Saint Leo has a good women’s tennis team. But when the sixth-ranked Lions (20-5 at the time) entered the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships last month, they faced a much better one. Headed into their first-round match-up, the Brigham Young University-Hawaii Seasiders were undefeated in the 2014 season. And while they were ranked just third in the tournament, losing to anyone was a rarity: In the past 16 seasons, the team had been defeated just nine times. After facing the Lions, though, they now have 10 losses. Saint Leo upset BYU-Hawaii 5-4 in a match that lasted more than six hours. Following that victory, the Lions toppled the 12th-ranked California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans to advance to the semifinals. It was the first time the Lions reached the Final Four and their first trip to the national tournament, as well. Saint Leo’s run ended after a loss to second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University. Still, acting head coach Sarah Summerfield is proud of the team’s accomplishments. “Obviously, I was thrilled,” Summerfield said.“The way we performed at the end of the year, it was spectacular. It was the best tennis I’ve seen them play all year.” While defeating the Seasiders was the highlight of the year, Summerfield said it wasn’t the only big match the team won during their memorable season.Avenging an earlier loss to Lynn University, one of the top teams in the competitive Sunshine State Conference, Saint Leo defeated the Fighting Knights in the conference semifinals and again in the second round of the national tournament.

COURTESY OF MIKE CARLSON
Junior Paula Montoya was part of the Saint Leo Lions’ record-breaking season in women’s tennis.
The conference victory against Lynn came down to a final singles match — college tennis competitions are determined by counting victories in both doubles and singles play in a best-of-nine format — and it was junior Paula Montoya who came through with the deciding win. Montoya, who hails from Venezuela, said that her country’s tennis play is marked by a combination of consistency and aggression,
and she used both to secure the win for her team. “In the beginning it was consistency. I played the ball so she was getting tired,” Montoya said. “But then in the second set she got aggressive and I got kind of defensive, so I almost lost that second set. It was 5-2 (in favor of her opponent) and I got my confidence back and I was able to play my aggressive game.”

The Lions’ success this season will help juniors like Montoya prepare for a larger leadership role next year, she said. And her coach agrees, noting that a regular challenge for sports teams is replacing veteran leadership. But Summerfield thinks that the current team set a standard that the team next year will be eager to match. “I believe that they’re going to want to do just as well or better than we did this year,” she said. “I definitely think that the new seniors have to step it up, and I know they’re going to do it because they know what it feels like to get to the Final Four, they know what it takes and I know they’re going to be up for the challenge.” Part of that challenge will be to adapt to a new head coach. While Summerfield will be a graduate assistant coach for Saint Leo, a permanent coach will be chosen to lead the team going forward. Summerfield said she had a great experience as head coach, and believes taking a team to the Final Four will serve as a nice highlight on her coaching resume. She plans to pursue head coaching opportunities in the future. The run to the Final Four also will remain a highlight of Saint Leo’s tennis resume. While Montoya said she’s already starting her training program for next season and believes the team can improve its fitness to be better prepared for grueling matches, she acknowledges the accomplishment that puts this year’s women’s tennis team in the school’s record books, and the work that went into attaining that success. “It’s amazing because we’ve been playing and training for that goal,” she said.“We’re ranked No. 3 now and that’s amazing. That’s the first time we’ve been ranked that high.” putting contest, drawings and prizes. Some tips every renter should know Special to The Laker/Lutz News
The number of U.S. renters has expanded significantly since the burst of the housing bubble, and renters now represent 34 percent of all households, according to government statistics. Meanwhile, rents climbed 3.2 percent last year. Now that the rental market has become more crowded, the better prepared one is, the more likely they are to secure the property they desire. Real estate practitioners at Homes.com and ForeRent.com, have created a list they say will lead to stress-free renting. • Preparation. For a smooth approval process, be prepared with a completed rental application, written references from a previous property owner or employer, and an apartment hunting checklist to remember everything from fees to appliances. • Budget. No more than 25 to 30 percent of income should be spent on housing, experts said. Create a budget that considers extras like commute and lifestyle amenities. Confirm who bears responsibility for utilities and maintenance, as costs can vary by lease. • Amenities. Many amenities will be enticing, so be honest about what’s essential. Compromise may result in finding a home in a better location. • Location. Use free search features on real estate sites to easily search for rentals by ZIP code. • Search outside the box. Extend searches to single-family homes and townhomes. There are deals to uncover, especially if rent is being split. Also, review for-sale listings, as some people may be willing to rent instead. • Walk-through. Do a walk-through of the entire space before signing any paperwork, ensuring all faucets and appliances work. Open cabinets and closets, and be aware of issues that need to be taken care of prior to moving in.

Stress-free renting means being prepared. Do research in order to secure the best property.
• Review the lease. Understand all lease terms before signing. Pay attention to details such as termination. Ask the leasing agent or property owner plenty of questions to make sure you have a solid understanding. • Renter’s insurance. Personal belongings are not necessarily covered by the property owner’s insurance policy. Renter’s insurance covers belongings in most instances of theft and damage, and protects from anyone claiming to have been injured in an apartment due to negligence. The average cost for renters insurance is about $12 per month to cover $30,000 worth of property, according to Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America. • Security deposits. Take pictures on move-in day, as well as move-out day. Document repairs and modifications made while living there. When the lease ends, insist on a final walk-through with the leasing staff or property owner. Know the terms of the lease. • Use space efficiently. Use temporary décor ideas to turn a rental into a home, making everyone feel renewed and unique without making significant changes, or spending a lot of money. —StatePoint

Lower your insurance premiums special to The Laker / Lutz News by Mike Matthew Daryl Patrick, owner of Tampa Bay Insurance Center in Wesley Chapel, is confident that he can save you money on homeowner’s insurance. He is a property and casualty agent representing 37 homeowner insurance carriers, eight auto carriers, and 100 commercial insurance carriers. Every carrier is demo-tech A rated in Florida. “We find ways to help save people money,” says Daryl. “There are ways to get credits for your home that many agents don’t tell their customers. Getting certain inspections will lower your premiums. We had one customer who saved $800 by getting a single inspection.” Most inspections are good for five years, so the cost of the inspection will usually pay for itself many times over. Homes built in 2002 or later automatically qualify for wind mitigation credits. Anything older requires an inspection in order to receive a credit. Even condo owners can get wind mitigation credits. Your agent should be asking you a lot of questions. Do you live in a gated community? Are you retired? Do you have an alarm system? These questions may lower your insurance premiums. Your agent should be working for you first. “Most homes have credits in them,” says Daryl. “The homeowner may just not know it. We make sure they receive the credits available to them. For example, a single-entrance neighborhood gets you a credit.”
Anyone buying a home or with a renewal coming up should get in touch with Daryl's office and either he or one of his wonderful staff members will be glad to assist you. It takes about five minutes over the phone. Daryl can shop for the best rate from all of his carriers and get you a quote in 15 or 20 minutes. The process is the same for auto and commercial insurance. “There’s no risk in trying to save money,” says Daryl. “We get in touch with our customers at every renewal. We stay on top of changes in the industry that can save our customers money on their premiums. We can shop all of our carriers at every renewal if the customer wants.” “We counsel new homeowners to get the proper inspections and make sure they’re submitting the necessary forms with the right information,” says Daryl. “Sending too much information or the wrong information can adversely affect your premiums and even delay your approval.” Tampa Bay Insurance Center has been in business for five years. They moved to Wesley Chapel in November 2013 due to the phenomenal growth in the area. The employees love the area. They’re all very involved in community activities and events. They provide property and casualty insurance, specializing in personal coverage, and also provide commercial coverage for those who need it. Daryl asks that anyone who has their homeowner’s coverage through Citizens Insurance call him immediately. “You have much better options,” says Daryl.
