Eubanks was just 17 years old when he experienced and survived the massacre inside the library of Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. “I remember seeing my hand and knowing that I had been shot, but I couldn’t feel it,” Eubanks recalled.“I couldn’t connect to the emotion of it, or the physical pain of it, because I wasn’t present in my own body.” That traumatic experience as a teen, as a

survivor in the Columbine school shooting, was the catalyst to Eubanks’ painful journey through addiction and eventually into longterm recovery. Eubanks put it like this:“I will never be the person I was on the morning of April 20, 1999.That boy did not walk out of the library that day. He was altered, forever.” See HEAL, page 11A

Hurricane supplies Proposed recycling amendment sales tax holiday met with concerns in Pasco starts May 31 By Brian Fernandes

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a taxation bill that establishes May 31 through June 6 as the Hurricane Supplies Sales Tax Holiday. The tax exemption provides an opportunity to purchase items intended to help residents and business operators to prepare for, or respond to, a disaster. Items exempted from the sales tax include: • Flashlights, torches and other self-powered portable light sources costing $20 or less • Portable radios, two-way radios, or weather-band radios costing $50 or less • Tarps or other waterproof sheeting, and tie-down kits costing $50 or less • Gas or diesel fuel tanks costing $25 or less • Batteries costing $30 or less • Food coolers (nonelectric) costing $30 or less • Power generators costing $750 or less Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1 and ends on Nov. 30.

An amendment to reshape Pasco County’s recycling collection was an agenda of importance at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 21. The proposal was first introduced by the county’s Solid Waste and Resource Recovery Department at a board workshop in April. It came in response to a 2017 survey, which showed that over 75 percent of its Pasco County respondents preferred a higher frequency of recycling service, as well as carts. This change would increase recycling pickup from twice a month to once a week. While residents would be able to continue using their own personal bin to load recyclable items, there would be the option of private haulers issuing a cart for a monthly fee. Regardless of what container is used, it would have to be labeled with a signature sticker in order for it to be picked up.

Also, glassware would no longer be accepted as a recyclable item, as it is deemed as a ‘contaminant.’ Broken glass mixed with other recyclables leads to potential contamination, thus lowering the commodity value of those items. What’s more, glass has led to higher costs for the county when hauled away with recyclables – with foreseeable increases on the way. According to the county, glass makes up about 40 percent of the weight for recyclables annually. Costs become a burden when factoring in the transportation to a processing plant, then the separation of dirty glass from other recyclables, once there. “We’re currently paying $45 a ton to transport the materials down to [the material recovery facility],” added John Power, the county’s solid waste director.“By 2020, our contract is going to disappear, so we’re See RECYCLING, page 11A

Diminishing waste in local oceans is an important mission for third-grader Lilly Kate Paban. In fact, she has been motivated to start an afterschool program at her Learning Gate Community School, in Lutz, to both educate fellow students and to get them to go outdoors to take action. She was first inspired when her then-science teacher, Christopher Bell, explained to the class the plight animals face when they mistakenly consume plastic littered in the sea. Lilly Kate has always loved animals, especially dolphins. In fact, her dream came true when she got the opportunity to swim alongside one. Her care for wildlife compelled her to help in some way, and she asked three of her friends at school for support. “I gathered my friends and was like, ‘we should start a club to help the environment.’ “Our goal is to clean up most of the plastic in the oceans so that none of the animals get extinct,” the 9-year-old explained. Once the girls devised a plan for an environmental club, they approached their principal with the idea, which was met with approval. In building support, Lilly Kate recruited her mother, Joelle, as a club volunteer. Joelle admitted she was shocked at first, unaware of her daughter’s good cause, but willing to help. “How can I say no to my kid?” Joelle responded with a smile.“I’m going to support any endeavor my child wants to do.” While the club is in the early stages, plans are already being established. The girls have decided their target audience to join is second grade to seventh grade students. They would also like to collect member-

ship fees in order to fund group trips and further their cause in protecting wildlife. Lilly Kate attributes her independence and go-getter mindset to her mother, who takes her and her younger sister, Stellie, to school. Joelle has her own executive assistant business. On their commute, the girls often hear their mother on the phone discussing her company. That business savvy helped Lilly Kate and her friends form the blueprint for the afterschool program. “I couldn’t be any more proud,” Joelle stated.“This is something that they want to give back to nature, and do their tiny part in this world.” However, the girls’ efforts were just beginning. They sent a handwritten letter to the Tampa tech company Tribridge – asking for whatever support it could offer. The letter reached the company by Friday, May 10 and that following Monday, the girls got quite a surprise while in school. Pete Loach, IT manager at Tribridge, personally donated seven laptops to help move the club forward. “Just what a tiny letter can do, can make a big change,” Lilly Kate mentioned. Joelle and her husband, Mario, also extend gratitude to Bell for helping spark their daughter’s interest in environmental awareness through his class. Both parents attested to the teacher’s dedication toward his students. “This guy’s life [is] these children,” Joelle said.“He brought passion.” Now with new laptops, the group can conduct proper research and track the oceans’ red tide, Lilly Kate said. She added that there are plans to do summer beach cleanups before the program officially starts next semester. With the initiative of several third-graders, many kids can learn to carry the mantle for a cleaner and safer tomorrow.

Bay Area writers display their literary works By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

The Land O’ Lakes Branch Library had an even larger volume of books stacked up as it held its annual Authors’ Fair on May 18. The event featured 20 writers from the Tampa Bay area showcasing their works across many genres. It was an opportunity for Pasco County residents to discover local literature, speak with the authors and purchase signed books. Deborah Cameron had her booth set up just outside the kids’ play area in the library. It was a suitable location to display her children’s novel,“The Mel Monsta” which she co-authored. The story features Mel the Monsta whose encounter with a friendly girl, helps Mel become more soft and gentle. The idea initially came from Cameron’s journey in becoming a better person to herself, and others. “We thought, ‘what can we do to help children with this?’” she and her co-author thought. “It’s to encourage children and adults to look beyond race, gender [and] who you love in life.” With the books neatly laid out on the table, Cameron also had a stuffed animal of Mel the Monsta for kids to marvel at. In the past, she has donated the books to sick youth at Shriners Hospitals for Kids as a way to encourage them. Cameron said she plans to write literature geared toward helping kids with autism. Booths like hers is what intrigued Beth Smith to come out to the fair. She enjoys combing through children’s books she can read to the youngsters in her family. “I have nieces and nephews, so I deal with them,” Smith said. Other authors’ works caught her eye as well, especially a book on cats. “I’m an animal lover,” she explained with a smile.“I picked up a dog off the side road and still have him living with me today.” She had her hands full as she exited the library with five purchased books. Some authors present had work that was religiously inspired, such as Mary Perrone Davis. Among some of her books displayed were

Author D.A. Plotkin, of New Port Richey, smiles, as she candidly speaks about her journey through years of infertility, detailed in her memoir, ‘Wishbone.’

“Mary Loves to Sing” and “Mary’s Butterfly Garden.” “It’s a series of books about a little girl’s growth and her relationship with the Lord,” Perrone Davis explained. The picture books are geared towards children between ages 2 to 6. However, the school nurse had no intention of writing until 2002 when she had a unique encounter with a butterfly. Her relation with nature, coupled with prayer, inspired her series, she said. “I think that people tend to underestimate a child’s ability to understand the spiritual,” Perrone Davis reasoned. She added that she wants to use the books to further inspire her seven grandchildren. “I love to look at local authors’ work,” said attendee Lynn Landseadel.“I think we should buy small and support the community.” An avid book reader, the Spring Hill resident was present at last year’s fair as well. This year, she said she was impressed by what writers had to offer. As a fan of mystery and psychological thrillers, she was attracted to J.C. Gatlin’s booth.

Gatlin is known for his murder-mystery novels and was eager to showcase his most recent project: “Hangman (spelled H_NGM_N): Murder is the Word.” He attributes other authors of similar genres in sparking his interest. However, some writers draw from their own trauma to put words to paper. Loren and Lisa Murfield were present to promote their collaborated efforts as co-authors. “The R.O.I of Compassion” was published in 2010 and was inspired after the couple’s son, Caleb, took his own life in 2007. “He was the life of the party,” explained dad Loren.“He had a Robin Williams, razor-

sharp wit.” What added inspiration for the writing was when Caleb’s sister said at his funeral that the family “can’t let his life be for nothing,” Loren recalled. The book not only opens up about the grief Loren and Lisa were going through, but how they were able to pick up the pieces of their lives to move forward. While the book is a means of helping those suffering trauma, it is also a guide in helping employers better sympathize with their grieving employees. This aspect of the book was in response to Lisa being laid off from her job shortly after Caleb’s passing. She described her subordinates as being insensitive in their approach, given what she had just experienced. “I started to think ‘how do employees handle it in that type of a situation?’” Lisa contemplated. In the book, she and Loren address steps that employers should consider in reaching out to their workers, and being more invested in their mental well-being. “There is a better way,” Loren stated.“We argue that compassion is the best business model.” The couple added that the book’s title “R.O.I” – Return on Investment- is what employers will see when having a deeper connection with their workers. When an employee feels wanted and respected, it will show through their work ethic. Their most recent book, “Leading with the Power of Compassion,” also delves deep into appreciating people on a whole and learning to care for an individual on a human level. The event’s range of genres and personally-inspired writings showed the relevancy of literature for all age groups and backgrounds.

The Pasco County Commission is expected to soon consider an 180-day moratorium on new applications for mini-warehouses and selfstorage facilities. Alexandra LaPorte, senior planner with the county’s planning and development department, said the intention of the 180-day moratorium would be for county staff to work on proposed regulations relating to that type of land use in the future. “This temporary moratorium would allow the planning and development department to research best practices for the development of mini-warehouse and self-storage facilities within the county,” LaPorte told commissioners, at their May 7 meeting. “It would also allow us to analyze whether additional standards relating to these uses should be incorporated in the land development code, and it would allow us to make sure those standards would support design standards to preserve and enhance visual and functional characteristics, as outlined in the comprehensive plan,” she said. LaPorte also noted that similar ordinances have been adopted in Tamarac, Miami-Dade

and Collier County, in Florida, as well as in other places across the country. The board approved LaPorte’s request for public hearings on the matter before the Pasco County Planning Commission, on May 23 at 1:30 p.m.; and before the county commission on June 4 and June 19. Commissioner Mike Moore applauded the county’s action on the issue. “Thanks to the team for bringing this. I know you worked hard on this. I think it’s important that we move forward with this,” said Moore, who has made no secret of his concerns about mini-warehouses popping up on land he thinks would be better utilized for uses that generate jobs. “What we’re doing is losing the possibility of major employment centers on that land,” Moore said.“I’m glad you brought it forward. I think it’s the right thing to do. I would assume we will have board support on this.” The moratorium would not affect anyone who has already had a pre-application meeting on this type of development, Moore noted. Commissioner Kathryn Starkey agreed with Moore’s position, saying she doesn’t want to see storage facilities taking up space that could be used to attract businesses offering quality jobs in Pasco County.

Gulfside Now Offers Skilled Nursing In Patients’ P Homes After 30 years of hospice care, Gulfside Hospice & Palliative Care has rebranded itself as Gulfside Healthcare Services, as it launches a new home health division. The nonprofit, which serves families in Pasco and Pinellas counties, recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Land O’ Lakes off fice and the addition of its professional home health team of licensed nurses, therapists and social workers. “It’s exciting to be growing and off fering new services to our communityy,,” said Linda W Waard, president and chief executive offfficer of the agencyy. “Providing skilled home care to patients is a perfect complement to our hospice and palliative care services.” Gulfside has served local residents since 1988, and is wellknown for its quality care and community focus. The agency is bringing this same dedication and commitment to its new home health division, which provides skilled medical services ordered by a patient’s doctors, including nursing, patient education, and physical, occupational and speech therapies. “There are many advantages of taking care of someone in their home instead of in a hospital or rehab center,” said W Waard. “Patients are more comfortable at home, family is there for support, and no transportation is needed because our health care providers come to them.” Skilled nursing is a service that more than 75 percent of Gulfside’s home health patients receive through its nursing staffff, said Thomasina Santacroce, Gulfside’s director of clinical services. “Our nursing team specializes in the advanced care — wound care, injections, IV therapyy,, pain management and medication oversight,” said Santacroce, who has worked in home health for 15 years, and has been an RN for 20. “W We typically yp y see patients p for five

Dr. Judith L. Reese with Dr. Gyl Kasewurm.

AUDIOLOGIST GAINS GREATER INSIGHTS INTO NEEDS OF HEARING-IMPAIRED CONSUMERS (LUTZ, FL)—Dr. Judith L. Reese recently attended a conference in St. Joseph, Michigan for hearing professionals from around the country and Canada, with presentations focused on improving hearing aid patients’ experience with the ever-improving technological developments in hearing devices. “Every day, millions of people rely on their hearing devices to keep them connected with their families, their friends and their co-workers.” Dr. Reese explained on her return. “Knowing how the best hearing professionals focus on their patient’s needs help us raise the level of excellence in hearing care in the Tampa Bay region.” Dr. Reese joined peers from throughout North America to hear Dr. Gyl Kasewurm of Professional Hearing Services share industry developments and best practices related to new technology as well as quality consumer education that made Dr. Kasewurm’s practice a leader and innovative clinic respected by manufacturers and consumers.

“Hearing devices nowadays are the most complicated and sophisticated consumer electronics item that a person can buy,” Dr. Reese explains. “The best way to ensure that devices are working optimally for the consumer is to make the ideal match of individual need, specific hearing impairments, with the right technology and ongoing professional adjustments.” Dr. Reese’s own clinic, JC Audiology in Lutz, Fl, is an innovative practice as well. Dr. Reese opened the practice in 2005, and it was the first female-owned private practice audiology company in the greater Tampa area. Since then she has treated about 2,500 patients, and opened her Tampa Bay Hearing Aid Hospital, which services on average more than 125 hearing devices every month. During the Month of May, Dr. Reese and her colleague, Dr. Jennifer Steed, are conducting free hearing screenings for adults on Fridays. Those interested in a hearing check can call (813) 949-1331 to schedule an appointment.

LOCAL STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN UN MODEL

Tallahassee Community College (TCC) student Samuel Goetz, of Odessa, attended the National Model United Nations in New York City. About 6,000 students from nearly 50 countries participated in the simulation, which included discussions of issues facing the international community, aiming to overcome the obstacles diplomats face when addressing them. The TCC students, representing the UN delegation from Libya, won three awards, earning a Distinguished Delegation Award for the overall team effort, and two Position Paper Awards, which are based on the quality of research and written positions

submitted prior to the conference. Students interested in participating in the TCC Model United Nations starting in the fall semester should email wallert@tcc.fl.edu or murgor@tcc.fl.edu.

USE A FIRST JOB AS FRAMEWORK FOR SUCCESS

A recent survey by PayScale has found that only about 50 percent of managers felt that recent graduates were ready for fulltime work. The skills that managers often found lacking in graduates included critical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, and leadership. In a release, Matt Stewart, co-founder of College Works Painting, gives these tips for that first job that can also be applied to a career path. Start small, think big.Young people tend to look for a job at a prestigious big-name company, so don’t overlook small companies that would allow more freedom to take on a variety of different roles, which would add to your growth. Find a mentor. Find a respected leader and reach out for advice. Pay attention to what they did to get where they are. Do more than the job description. Move up or redefine your position by taking on more than the minimum expectations of the job.Volunteer for new projects, committees, training others, etc. Don’t be afraid to fail. Find comfort in discomfort. The greatest self-growth is achieved when you challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone. Keep yourself in a state of constant growth and train yourself to handle stress while you are young. In your first job, Stewart said to “be prepared to embrace and learn from things that may seem suboptimal on the surface, and even from some of your mistakes.”

Moffitt Cancer to open Wesley Chapel treatment center The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Moffitt Cancer Center and AdventHealth have announced they are working together to open an outpatient cancer center on the campus of AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, located next to the hospital on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. The outpatient center is expected to open in the fall of 2020. “We strive to provide world-class cancer care close to where people live and work,” said Alan F. List, MD, president and chief executive officer of Moffitt Cancer Center. “Expanding Moffitt’s brand of oncology care, treatment and research in Pasco County helps us accomplish this goal. BayCare’s plans for new Pasco hospital are uncertain By B.C. Manion

Proponents for axing the Certificate of Need requirement said the repeal would promote more competition. Razler said the issue is more complicated. “It’s not straight up supply and demand, when it comes to health care, because of all of nuances involved,” Razler said. BayCare will need to review its plans “to determine what’s the best option, given the new landscape,” the hospital spokeswoman said. BayCare had been pursuing the hospital in Pasco because of the dramatic population growth and increasing demand for health services. The construction of the hospital was expected to create 300 jobs, and once it

became fully operational, it would need about 300 team members, hospital officials told The Laker/Lutz News in previous interviews. BayCare had planned to provide these services at the new hospital: • Emergency services for adults and children • Intensive care services • Obstetrical care services • Diagnostic lab imaging • Physical rehabilitation • Behavioral support services Hospital officials previously said it typically takes about three years from the time a hospital is approved until the physical structure is operating. At this point, it remains unclear, whether those plans will be pursued.

Eubanks shared his personal story as the keynote speaker at the annual “Strengthening Our Communities Conference on Mental Health and Drug Prevention,” held May 14 at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel. The conference, hosted by Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) and Baycare Behavioral Health, is designed to increase public awareness and inspire action on mental health and substance abuse disorders. Just a few days after the conference, the speaker was found dead from a suspected drug overdose at his home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He was 37. In a statement, his family said Eubanks “lost the battle with the very disease he fought so hard to help others face. Helping to build a community of support is what meant the most to Austin, and we plan to continue his work.” ASAP also expressed its sympathy on Eubanks’ passing in a released statement: “We extend our thoughts and prayers to Austin’s family and friends.Although he has passed too early, his voice will echo in our memories and actions forever.” Before his untimely death, Eubanks addressed a crowd of nearly 500 people, to discuss the intersection of trauma, mental illness and addiction.

going to see that price go up drastically.” If glass was separated, it could potentially save the county over $100,000 in yearly expenses. However, there was pushback against the proposal during the public hearing segment. Joe Meierhoff is a regional sourcing manager of the glass-processing company, Strategic Materials. He took to the podium to address his opposition before the board. His company takes in recycled glass from material recovery facilities. Based on the condition of the glass, the business may see profit as it sells the material to bottle manufacturers. Meierhoff expressed doubt about the reported annual glass weight, suggesting that contents inside glass perhaps adds to the bulk. He also added that whether thrown in a garbage or recycling bin, the glass ultimately ends up at a landfill either way. “I would like you to not agree to put glass out of the recycling,” he implored.“At the very least, give me the opportunity to work with the contracted recycler and see if we can come up with a resolution.” While no definitive answer was given by the board, there was no indication that the manager’s request would be ruled out. Although, that was not the only conflict that arose from the proposed amendment. Under the new ordinance, Pasco residents who belong to a homeowners association (HOA) or a community development district (CDD), would not receive once a week pickups until their contract with private haulers expired.

Once the contracts end, these groups would be expected to abide by the same level of service as the rest of the county. After receiving feedback from residents within these groups, Commissioner Mike Moore contested the idea. “They have concerns about budgeting,” he said.“They want to be able to continue to negotiate those terms themselves, as they do now with the haulers.” Other board members, however, took a different stance. Commissioner Mike Wells noted that he had not received any negative feedback on the particular proposal. He also went on to state:“I think we need to do it county-wide. I don’t know that we need to make an exception for one community.” In agreement, Commissioner Kathryn Starkey added that “they can negotiate their price, they just need to have recycling once a week.” She also mentioned that the only alternative would be for HOAs and CDDs to pay a higher fee if they did not comply with the ordinance. Currently, the maximum amount a private hauler can charge a resident for both garbage and recyclable pickup is $12.44 a month. If passed, the ordinance would grant haulers a 90-day period before providing the amended services. The ordinance would not require any funding in order to go into effect. The Board of County Commissioners meeting was held in the West Pasco Government Center board room in New Port Richey. It was agreed unanimously by the board to continue discussions on the ordinance at a June 4 meeting.

The Florida Legislature’s decision to drop the requirement for a Certificate of Need review for new hospitals is causing BayCare Health System to reconsider its plans for a hospital in Pasco County. The hospital chain had received a preliminary OK on its Certificate of Need request for a 60-bed hospital on a 111-acre site at the northeast quadrant of Interstate 75 and Overpass Road. It was pushing ahead with planning for the new facility, despite a challenge filed by AdventHealth’s hospitals in Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills and Dade City. A hearing on the appeal had been set for August.

‘AN EMOTIONAL ROBOT’

Shortly after the school shooting, Eubanks was prescribed opiates, benzodiazepines and stimulants for his physical injuries. He soon found the drugs helped him in other ways. “From the moment I was medicated, that emotion (from Columbine) completely shut off. It was like somebody turned off a faucet,” Eubanks explained. “I learned very quickly how to turn myself into an emotional robot, with the combination of those three substances. I thought that I had found the answer, I never had to feel anything. I was taught how to seek the fast road to relief.” Years later, at the height of his addiction, Eubanks said he was using upwards of 400 milligrams of the painkiller OxyContin per day, plus a host of other recreational drugs. His drug of choice, he admitted, was “just more.”

EMOTIONAL HEALING THROUGH HUMAN CONNECTION

After a decade more of undergoing a cycle of addiction and relapse, Eubanks said he finally received the help he needed, at a long-term treatment center in Denver that accepted him free of charge. It’s there he found the prescription he needed most: authentic human connection. The treatment center helped him navigate the stages of grief through meaningful, personal relationships with others with similar, lived experiences. “With emotional pain, in order to heal it, you have to feel it. It is essential to recovery,” Eubanks said. He added:“What is so essential for emotional healing for all of us, is relying on others from a place of vulnerability and authenticity and transparency.” The environment also provided him with structure and accountability, too, he said. Eubanks said,“I had to finally admit that I knew nothing, and I had to trust somebody else enough to believe that they did, and I did everything that they told me to for long enough to where it became a pattern.” Eubanks explained that after Columbine he didn’t return to school for his senior

But, the repeal of the requirement for a Certificate of Need has created a wide open market for the establishment of hospitals. The repeal is causing BayCare to take another look at its plans, said BayCare spokeswoman Lisa Razler. It’s still too early to say how the change will affect the health care system’s plans, Razler said. “We have a whole new lens to look through,” Razler said.“We’re going to have to take a step back and re-evaluate because with that new legislation, anyone can put a hospital anywhere.” The health care system was disappointed by the Legislature’s action, Razler said. “We believed in the planning process,” she said.

year, instead relied on a private tutor from home in order to graduate. The decision isolated himself from others, leaving him to rely on substances to cope with his emotional pain. “I withdrew from human connection entirely. If you can create a better petri dish for addiction, I don’t know what it is,” the speaker said. “I missed out on a lot of the collaborative, connected healing that many of my classmates experienced in our senior year, because I withdrew from that community entirely.”

PREVENTION AND REHABILITATION REFORMS NEEDED

Eubanks discussed his ideas to combat the nation’s addiction crisis, which he blamed partly on increased accessibility, acceptability and toxicity of various substances. The speaker called for greater efforts in implementing more systems of prevention and rehabilitation to curtail the demand for drugs. He challenged the medical community to do a better job of integrating physical health and mental health. He also challenged the education community to put more focus on nurturing emotional intelligence in early childhood education, to increase the ability to relate to other people. Eubanks then called for greater accessibility to long-term treatment for those who cannot afford its services. He also said the criminal justice system needs to place more emphasis on rehabilitation programs, specifically, by providing inmates a therapeutic continuum of care and teaching them prosocial behaviors. Said Eubanks,“Drugs are always going to exist. We cannot eradicate these issues by combating them on the supply side. We have to curtail the demand.” In addition to Eubanks, the conference featured presentations from Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco; Gail Ryder, Baycare Health Systems vice president of behavioral health; and Roderick Cunningham, Drug Enforcement Agency outreach program manager. There was also a series of breakout sessions that focused on substance abuse prevention and recovery efforts, among other topics.

After the historic game, the Land O’Lakes High School Gators and the Wiregrass Ranch Hockey Club gathered for a group picture on the ice.

Hockey team formed for Land O’ Lakes High By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

I

t all started as an idea between two dads who just wanted the best for their hockey-playing sons:What if we started our own hockey team at Land O’ Lakes High School? After long months of conversations, fundraising and coordination, Joshua Whitman and Bill O’ Connor’s theoretical question became a reality. This coming fall, the Land O’ Lakes High School hockey club will begin its first season in the Lightning High School Hockey League, or the LHSHL. The Gators becomes the 19th school to join the league. The league is operated by the Tampa Bay Lightning, and features varsity level programs throughout Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties. Hockey is not a sanctioned sport by the Florida High School Athletic Association, the official governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida. And, since most high schools don’t have enough players to field a team, the LHSHL has what’s called catchments, where it combines players usually from three or four different high schools to form a team. Previously, Land O’ Lakes students would be zoned to play for the Mitchell Mustangs hockey team, which also includes players from Mitchell and Sunlake high schools. With their sons, who play travel league hockey together, set to be high school freshmen next year, Whitman and O’Connor didn’t want them to get lost on an already overpopulated Mitchell roster. They also wanted them, and others, to get a true high school athletic experience — able to solely represent the Gators with their fellow Land O’ Lakes classmates. O’ Connor put it this way: “It’s fun because we all live in the same community and we all see each other at school. It’s like playing on the high school football team, with all the people from the same area. That’s what’s cool about it.You can tell the enthusiasm from the kids.” The parents got the blessing of the LHSHL to start a team and enlisted the help of USA Hockey to determine if Land O’ Lakes had enough players to make it all work. They also canvassed social media to gauge interest from Land O’ Lakes families. The response was overwhelmingly positive. “I was so surprised how enthusiastic everybody was and how supportive everyone was. That was the key. That’s what I think was good,” O’ Connor said. Once it was confirmed their community had the hard numbers to fill a club roster, the dads created a nonprofit foundation,

Joshua Whitman, team manager and one of the people responsible for creating the newly formed Land O’ Lakes High School hockey team, watches the first period of game play through the glass. The Land O’ Lakes resident uses his tablet during the game to do live tracking of stats and to manage the live stream video.

While the other players keep their eyes on the ice, Peter Tedeschi, of Land O’ Lakes, turns to wave to some friends who came to support the team. The Gators squared off against the Wiregrass Ranch Hockey Club in their inaugural game on April 19 at Advent Hospital Center Ice in Wesley Chapel.

Central Pasco Youth Hockey Foundation Inc., to help with fundraising and sponsorships efforts, and oversee the general operation of the team. They also went about filling a coaching staff, which is now led by Bill Karas, a Minnesota native who brings more than 50 years of coaching and scouting experience to the club. The entire endeavor took all of about six months. “We just kept moving forward, and it just kind of snowballed,”Whitman said.“Looking back now, it did fly by. It was good we started early and got things done as fast as possible.” Unlike most LHSHL teams, the Gators will have what’s called a “pure” team, with its entire roster made up of players who attend Land O’ Lakes High or are home-schooled and live within school boundaries. It undoubtedly adds a school spirit factor to the team. The hockey club raised about $1,800 selling Gators hockey sweatshirts alone, Whitman said, to help offset equipment and registration costs. “It’s created quite a buzz at the school,” said Whitman. “One of the things that we want to try to do is kind of change the culture about high school hockey here in Florida, because it kind of is a secondary thought for most kids.” The Gators hockey club actually began play this spring in a league operated by local rinks that’s independent of the LHSHL.The spring league is designed as a prelude to the fall season for current eighth-graders through high school juniors. The spring roster has 28 players. That in-

cludes three high school juniors, a sophomore and a freshman, 15 eighth graders, and 10 seventh graders on the practice squad. The club’s first-ever game was on April 19, when it faced Wiregrass Ranch High at AdventHealth Center Ice in Wesley Chapel. It was a memorable game for all, including the Gators head coach, who has seen just about everything in his five decadelong hockey career. “First game here, we probably had 200 people. It was incredible. You don’t see that at Gators Head Coach Bill Karas watches his players on a Minnesota high school game,” defense. Complacency kills: Get ready for Hurricane Season By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

R

esearchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced their 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season outlook on May 23. They predicted nine to 15 named storms, including four to eight hurricanes – and, two to four that could become major hurricanes. That compares to Colorado State University’s hurricane research team’s forecast in April, which predicted 13 named storms, including five hurricanes and two which will become major hurricanes. Remember: No matter what the experts predict — the bottom line is that it just takes one disaster to hit that is so destructive it will have devastating effects for years. So, if you haven’t already done so, begin making your preparations now — and ramp them up, as the threat level increases. Remember, as the old saying goes:“Better safe than sorry.” To help you prepare for Hurricane Season 2019, we’ve put together some checklists. Look through them and use them to improve your personal preparations for the season, which officially begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

BEFORE A HURRICANE, PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY:

• Keep your trees and shrubs trimmed. • Clear out clogged rain gutters and downspouts. • Store outdoor furniture, windchimes, garbage cans, decorations, potted plants and other items that could become projectiles in high winds. • If you have a boat, determine how and where to secure it. • Cover windows with pre-cut plywood or hurricane shutters.

Hurricane Michael devastated communities in Florida’s Panhandle.

PROTECT YOURSELF

• Assemble an emergency kit: Be sure it has enough food and water to last at least three days. It should include 1 gallon of water per day per person for drinking and sanitation. It also should include nonperishable foods that are easy to store and prepare, including protein bars, dried fruit, canned pastas, soups, canned tuna, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, raisins, beef jerky. (Be sure to include a can opener in your kit.) • Don’t forget the baby formula and baby food. • Pack paper cups and plates, plastic utensils, too.

Generators can keep things running when the power goes out, but be cautious when using them. If used improperly, they can kill.

SAFETY AND SANITATION

• Your safety kit should include filter masks to protect your mouth and nose • Medications • A first aid kit • A whistle to signal for help • A battery-powered radio and extra batteries • Moist towelettes for sanitation • Garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)

SHELTER

• Have a sleeping bag for each family member. • Duct tape and heavyweight garbage bags or plastic sheeting (for shelter-in-place) • A wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)

PROTECT IMPORTANT FAMILY DOCUMENTS

• Put valuable documents in a waterproof container and store it on a shelf, or take with you if you evacuate. Those documents should include bank account records, marriage certificates or divorce decrees, driver’s license, Social Security card, passport, titles, deeds, income tax information, trusts, wills and birth certificates.

PREPARE AN EMERGENCY KIT FOR YOUR PET

• Your kit should include: sturdy leashes, harnesses and/or a carrier; pet food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter, a litter pan; pet health records, current photos of your pets,

It’s important to know if you live in an evacuation zone and, if you do, what route you will use if evacuation becomes necessary.

in case they get lost; pet beds and toys.

HAVE A PLAN: SHOULD YOU STAY OR SHOULD GO?

• Know your zone and be prepared to leave, if authorities tell you to do so. Particularly vulnerable areas include mobile homes, high-rise buildings, coastal areas, near rivers or inland waterways and land below sea level. No matter where you live, you should evacuate if you feel unsafe. • If you live in a mandatory evacuation zone, prepare an evacuation plan that includes transportation routes and destinations, and considers all family members and pets. Know which hotels and motels along your evacuation route accept pets.Ask if no-pet policies can be waived in an emergency. • If you plan to shelter in place, notify

out-of-area contacts of your decision to stay. Be sure you have assembled your emergency kit and have a safe place to stay in your home. • If you are staying in place, fill up bathtubs or buckets with water to use for cleaning and toilet flushing. • Stay informed. Listen to an NOAA weather radio, or regularly check local forecasts and news reports. • Keep your vehicle’s gas tank threequarters full at all times and have cash on hand.

DURING THE STORM

• Close all interior doors. Secure and brace exterior doors.Take refuge in a small interior closet, or hallway on the lowest level. Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object. • Stay away from windows and glass doors. • Don’t be fooled by a lull in the storm. It could be the eye of the storm and the winds could resume.

AFTER THE HURRICANE PASSES

• Stay aware of threats from flooding and tornadoes. • Do not drive into water when you

can’t see the bottom of the road; avoid flooded areas. • Do not walk in standing water; it may contain contaminants, it might be deeper than it looks; it may have a strong undercurrent; or, it may be electrically charged with a downed wire. • Be careful about the foods you eat. If the power is out, your food may be spoiled. If you have a cooler, be sure to have lots of ice and freezer packs to help foods stay cool longer. • Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning: Do not burn charcoal or gas grills inside a house, tents, garage, vehicle or fireplace. Do not use gas-powered generators indoors or in a garage. • If you’re using a generator, be sure to give it plenty of room for ventilation. Place it outside and away from windows, doors and vents to prevent poisonous carbon monoxide from coming indoors.

IF YOU HAVE DAMAGE

• Call an agent. • Take photos of the damage. • Make emergency repairs to avoid more damage and keep receipts for tarps, lumber, etc. • Keep alert to potential scams.

Bindi is a stunning merle Bindi is a merle mixedbreed pup that came to the shelter as a stray. She is estimated to be about 2.5 years old. Bindi had some health concerns when she arrived, but over the last month has become a thriving, bright, happy pup. Bindi is heartworm positive, but it is treatable, and adopters can speak to the staff about treatment options.

Ellis loves her ‘nummies’

Ellis is a 3-year old calico rescued from a laundromat when she was only a couple weeks old. She loves to cuddle and take naps with her mama and really is not into hanging around any other people. Ellis loves trying to chase things she can see outside from the window, such as lizards, bugs and leaves. Her favorite toys are laser pointers and anything that makes noise or moves (like her human owners). She goes crazy over her "nummies" (cat treats) or wet food. Ellis gets the "zoomies" between midnight and 5 a.m., her favorite time to run wild around the house while loudly meowing at the night. Ellis lives with Jordan Glogowski in Land O’ Lakes.

Venus is a gorgeous pup

PET OF THE WEEK FAMILIES RECEIVE A $30 GIFT CARD TO CHUY’S TEX MEX.

Venus is a 2-year-old mixed breed and is always smiling. She arrived at the shelter at the beginning of May. Despite having a case of the sniffles, Venus continues to smile and hope to find her furever home soon. The shelter will facilitate a meet-and-greet if you have a pet already, as well.

PET PAWS NEW VACCINE BEING TESTED FOR DEER University of Florida scientists are working with deer farmers to test a new vaccine that could help prevent a deadly disease in deer. The disease, epizootic hemorrhagic diseases, or EHD, does not affect humans, but is the number one cause of herd loss on deer farms, said Samantha Wisely, associate professor of wildlife ecology and conservation with the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, in a release. The UF/IFAS Cervidae Health Research Initiative (CHeRI) provides diagnostic services to deer farmers and now will work with the farms to test the vaccine’s effectiveness. An independent manufacturer developed the vaccine and CHeRI has partnered with them to test it in Florida, where it could make a positive impact on the deer farming industry.
