Festival seeks to become signature event By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce is launching a new event aimed at giving people an annual music festival they can enjoy, while area businesses showcase their goods and services. The festival is a new take on the chamber’s annual business expo that has been held for two decades at the Land O’ Lakes Parks and Recreation Complex. The event, slated for March 11 and March 12, will be at the Fraternal Order of Police Pasco Lodge 29 property, just off Land O’ Lakes Boulevard (U.S. 41) and Hale Road in Land O’ Lakes.

Taylor Hicks

Organizers have lined up Taylor Hicks, winner of season five of American Idol, to be the headliner on March 11, the first night of the Spring Music Festival & Expo. Hicks’ appearance is deliberately timed to coincide with The Farewell Season of

American Idol. Hicks will perform after Solar Exposure, the opening act.The evening also will feature food trucks and beer/wine sales. No coolers

or pets will be allowed. The second day will spotlight businesses and family fun. “This is super exciting. I can’t believe the energy and enthusiasm that’s already been generated,” said Elayne Bassinger, president of the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce. “The tickets have been selling (for the concert),” she said, noting that some Taylor Hicks fans will be traveling from out of state to attend the concert. The second day of the event will combine music, a business showcase and fun activities for kids, said David Gainer, co-chair of the event. See FESTIVAL, page 11A

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lives on each year as communities nationwide celebrate the birth of the civil rights leader with parades, community service days and reflections on his message of nonviolence. The official holiday honoring King will be Jan. 18. In Pasco County, celebrations will be take place throughout the week, including a first-time parade in Lacoochee on the official holiday. The parade came at the suggestion of the young people in the Boys & Girls Club of Lacoochee, said Lorenzo Coffie, who is helping organize the parade and a scholarship breakfast for the MLK Program Committee. “We thought it was an exciting idea,” Coffie said. Area colleges and civic groups also are planning events. Pasco-Hernando State College will host the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture Series on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, on its various campuses around the county. The guest speaker will be Mark Anthony Neal, a professor of black popular culture in African-American Studies at Duke University in North Carolina and director of the Institute of Critical US Studies. The theme of Neal’s lectures will be “Hip Hop, Civil Rights and Social Media.” King’s legacy is in civil rights, but also social justice, and this year’s theme focuses on the synergy between the two, said Imani Asukile, director of Global & Multicultural Awareness at PHSC. Neal also brings expertise in social media and its cultural influences. His articles have been published in the Washington Post, Emerge Magazine and The Chicago Sun-Times. He is author of four books, including his most recent,“New Black Man: Rethinking Black Masculinity.” Neal has described himself as a black feminist male. At Saint Leo University, there will be a Spring Community Service Day on Jan. 18. Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy

Homeless benefit

Paul Gigante is hoping for a gigantic 50th birthday bash, but the party won’t be merely to celebrate him turning a half-century – it also will benefit homeless high school graduates who are college-bound. Gigante, who earns his living through his school photography business, said he became aware of the plight of homeless students through his wife’s involvement in Wharton High School’s Parent Teacher Association. “Our kids are in college now. But, it was brought to my attention a few years ago that there were over 14 homeless high schoolers at Wharton High School,” he said. “It has bothered me for the past number of years.” Over time, he learned more about the problem, and he decided he would use his 50th birthday party to try to do something to help. “In Pasco alone, there are 78 homeless high school seniors,” he said. “There are so many levels of homelessness. They could be kicked out of their house. A parent or two parents could be in jail. They could have been abandoned by their parents,” he said.

WHAT: Paul Gigante’s 50th birthday bash, including DJs, bands, raffles and 50/50. To benefit college-bound homeless graduates from Hillsborough and Pasco counties. WHERE: Skipper’s Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road in Tampa. WHEN: Jan. 24 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. COST: Cover charge is a suggested $10 donation, plus a birthday card for Paul Gigante.

For information, contact Paul Gigante at (813) 340-4080.

“There are so many scenarios. They’re living in a car. Or, they’re bouncing from apartment to apartment, staying on friends’ couches. There’s many, many scenarios. “I don’t need to know all of the scenarios. I just want to know what it is that I can do to help them,” Gigante said. To make that happen, he enlisted the help of his staff and his friends to organize a fun way to raise money. Credit union is 60, and going strong By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Anyone who has spent much time in the community of San Antonio has undoubtedly seen the tangible results of the San Antonio Citizens Federal Credit Union’s handiwork. The credit union, which serves the eastern half of Pasco County, and the tip of Hernando County, has been handling the financial transactions of its members for 60 years. In a world of bank mergers and takeovers, this credit union is the oldest chartered financial institution in Pasco County, said Tim Baldwin, the credit union’s current president. “I think the credit union has made a big difference in the lives of a lot of people in this area, and we feel that’s what we’re here to do — help people make their lives better,” Baldwin said. “We make home loans, car loans, personal loans. We have credit card accounts. We even do member business lending,” he said. The credit union has offices in San Antonio, Dade City and Zephyrhills, and expects to have a soft opening on its fourth location — in Wesley Chapel — this week. It all began with two men. Joe Herrmann and some of his friends wanted to bring a financial institution to San Antonio, a small community between Dade City and the town of St. Leo. “They applied for a state bank charter and were denied. And, they applied for a federal bank charter and were denied,” Baldwin said. During his research, Herrmann found out about credit unions and decided to find out more. So, Herrmann and his friend, Joe Collura, did some field research. “They got together, and they drove around Florida and Georgia visiting credit unions. “They decided that would fit what they wanted to do here,” Baldwin said. The charter was dated Dec. 12, 1955, and the credit union opened for business on Jan. 3, 1956. The desire for a financial institution likely stemmed from the community’s civic pride, Baldwin said. “It’s a little town, and it’s always been a little town; but, it was always a vital little town,” Baldwin said. While some credit unions are established to serve a certain group of employees, or a particular business, the San Antonio credit union has always been a

community charter. Under its original charter, anyone who lived within a 5-mile radius could join. Now, the credit union is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school within its field area. In those days, the credit union was located in a storefront of a building owned by Joe Herrmann. As it grew, it moved to a new location in San Antonio and then built its current location. It also has offices in Zephyrhills and Dade City, and will have a soft opening this week for a new location in Wesley Chapel. Its membership and assets grew, too. During its first year, it had 358 members and $67,000 in assets. It finished last year with more than 13,000 members and slightly more than $175 million in assets, Baldwin said. “I can remember, it has probably been 25 years ago or so, I remember at one of our annual meetings we were reporting that we had crossed $22 million in assets. “I remember Mr. Herrmann got up and spoke to us. He almost cried. He said, ‘We never dreamed that there would be $22 million in assets in this credit union,’ ” Baldwin said. “To me, it’s just a remarkable story about how this got started,” Baldwin said. “In the early days, everybody that worked at the credit union was a volunteer. They couldn’t afford to pay anybody,” he

said.“I don’t know if you could start a credit union from scratch again today, I would hate to try. It would be a daunting task.” Now, the credit union has 40 employees. Baldwin, who has been with the credit union for 27 years, loves his job. “We still make small personal loans to people. Usually at a commercial bank, unless a loan is a certain size, they won’t do it. “You just feel like you can actually make a difference for people,” Baldwin said. Terri Gude, vice president of branch operations and compliance, has been around the credit union most of her life. Her mother, Veda Gude, was the former credit union president. “I really grew up in the credit union. I used to come in on the weekends and in the evenings, and things like that, with my mother,” she said. She enjoys the personal nature of the credit union. “We’re not as big as some of the banks, so you get that true hometown feeling when you come in,” she said. “If you need a $500 loan, we’re willing to

do it. We have the opportunity to change lives. We do that everyday,” Gude said. Stockholders own banks, but members own credit unions. It makes a difference in pricing and policy decisions, Baldwin said. It also affects the environment, said Andy Kinross, who is one of the credit union’s two newest employees. “You’re literally a member. You aren’t just one of the masses,” said Kinross, who worked at a credit union in Ohio before moving to Florida. She’ll be working at the new Wesley Chapel, at 28909 State Road 54, just east of Interstate 75. The new office will serve a rapidly growing area, Baldwin said. He also expects the credit union’s territory to continue to grow. “I don’t think we’d ever want to go too far west in the county, but I think a next natural progression would be to try to incorporate some of the Land O’ Lakes area,” Baldwin said. “Land O’ Lakes would be a nice westerly boundary for us, eventually.”

An initial study completed in 2003 recommended widening the two-lane road to match the now widened portion of the county road on its approach to the intersection with State Road 56. Pasco school growth expected to continue By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County is expected to add a total of 1,673 students in public and charter schools next year, based on projections compiled by Pasco County Schools. That’s an increase over last year’s growth, which was 1,517, and brings the figure to nearly 3,200 in two years. The bulk of the growth is coming in the State Road 54/State Road 56 corridor, said Chris Williams, director of planning for Pasco County Schools. The growth is coming, he said, from “all those new developments springing up along the 54 corridor — Wiregrass. Bexley Ranch. Starkey Ranch.”

“Everything between Trinity and Wesley Chapel, along the 54 corridor,”Williams said. There’s development in the Sunlake area, and Connerton is building again, too, Williams said. The school district planner broke down the enrollment growth by grade levels. “This year, we grew by a little bit under 500 elementary kids. Next year, we’re projecting 555 in the elementary, which is about 73 percent of an elementary school,” Williams said. “We’re projecting 346 (additional students) for middle, and 709 (more) for high school,” he said. The district picks up a sizable number of private school and charter school kids at the high school level,Williams noted.

“We have to be cognizant of that when we’re doing our projections. We can’t just take our eighth-grade population and assume that’s what our ninth-grade population is going to be,” he said. The district has to add to that. This will be the third year in a row that the district has experienced enrollment growth, Williams said. Growth projected for next year is substantially less than in 2004-2005, when enrollment grew by almost 3,200, he said But, the expected growth is significantly more than in 2008-2009, when enrollment grew by 280; 2009-2010, when it grew by 327; 2010-2011, when it declined by 252 and, 2011-2012, when it dropped by130. The district’s projection for this year was

The district tries to be cautious in its projections, Williams said. “We don’t want to overbuild,” he said. On the other hand, “We also don’t want to fall way behind, either. “We’re trying to be smart about where we’re putting schools,” he said. “We built W because it was centrally located and allowed us to relieve Double Branch, Seven Oaks, that area,” he said. With all of the construction activity, there’s no doubt additional schools will be needed, Williams said. The question is how many? “Everybody is restarting, and they’re all going at once. The question is how sustainable is that? Are they competing for the same customers, or is there enough demand to buy all that they’re going to build? And, I don’t know the answer to that,”Williams said.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo’s population has increased to include a baby orangutan. Josie, a 30-year-old Bornean orangutan, gave birth to GoJo, a male offspring on Dec. 21. This was Josie’s fourth baby, according to a news release from the zoo. The baby was born in the breech position creating a challenging labor and delivery. “Josie did an amazing job with the delivery under difficult circumstances, and she cleared the baby’s airway herself immediately after birth,” Dr. Ray Ball, director of medical sciences, said in the release. “Along with our team, Josie’s 10-yearold daughter, Hadiah, observed the entire labor and delivery, which will be a very important experience for her when she becomes a mother,” Ball added. School buses to run on natural gas

MOBILE DETAILING Pasco County’s school district is planning to use natural gas to fuel a new fleet of buses. On Jan. 13, the Pasco County Planning Commission will consider a proposal to rezone about 24 acres on Interlaken Road for a storage, maintenance and fueling station that can handle about 120 buses. Pasco County commissioners will make the final decision on the rezoning at a later date, possibly on Jan. 26. In the first year of the program, Pasco County Schools plans to buy between 30 and 35 new buses equipped to run on fuel known as Compressed Natural Gas, or CNG. Those buses could be rolling by spring 2017, with more to come. “Transitioning to CNG will be done over many years,” said Pasco County Schools Deputy Superintendent Ray Gadd. The district has about 470 buses in its fleet. The goal is to shift a portion of the district’s bus fleet from gasoline and diesel-burning fuels to natural gas. The school district anticipates the shift to result in savings over time. Buses also will burn cleaner fuel with less toxic emissions, and they will run more quietly than traditional buses. Gadd estimates the annual cost for purchasing these buses will be about $1.5 million. A state rebate program could provide the school district with a return of $25,000 per bus, up to 10 buses. “It helps counter the costs,” he said. And, buying the buses over several years will stagger their eventual replacement dates, which also can save money. Typically, buses are replaced after 10 years. But, Gadd said a natural gas fueled bus is predicted to have a longer life of 13 to 15 years. If the rezoning is approved, design work could begin within a month. Opening date for the approximately $7 million facility is anticipated in spring 2017. A.D. Morgan of Tampa will build the station.

FESTIVAL, from page 1A “It’s really going to be more of a festive, community type day,” Gainer said. “We’ll have a kids’ zone. We’re going to have a whole bunch of games and bounce houses and those kinds of things,” Gainer said. The musical lineup for March 12 includes local bands, including Ashley Smith & Josh Higgins, Bad Rabbit, Stonegrey and Bobby Summers. The second day also gives businesses a chance to shine and the community a better chance to see what they have to offer, Bassinger said. It also gives area residents “the opportunity to shop local,” she said. Bassinger credits Gainer and event cochair Suzanne Beauchaine, account manager of The Laker/Lutz News, for coming up with the new approach to the chamber’s annual business expo. Bassinger is excited about the event’s new location. “It’s a beautiful piece of property back

Future buses transporting children in Pasco County Schools are expected to use natural gas for fuel.

The school board briefly considered a public/private partnership, but Gadd said, “Any time you finance it, somebody is making a profit. We had the capital to build it ourselves. We are going to own it and operate it.” The property on Interlaken is in a largely industrial area on a former tree farm. Prior to reaching a decision, Pasco school district officials visited Clearwater Gas System, which is owned and operated by the city of Clearwater. The city was the first in Tampa Bay to build a natural gas fueling station in 2011. Clearwater Gas will be the school district’s supplier. The utility currently serves parts of Pinellas and Pasco, including Land O’ Lakes and the community of Connerton. At a neighborhood meeting in November, about a dozen residents met with school districts officials, according to county documents filed with the rezoning application. They requested an eight-foot buffer wall, which Gadd said can be built. Aside from the buses’ new sheen, parents and students won’t notice a difference from the old yellow school buses. “It looks just like the buses we have now that people are used to seeing up and down their streets,” Gadd said.

there,” she said. The new venue also offers organizers more options, Gainer said. “If we were going to do a festival-type atmosphere and be able to provide certain beverages and foods, we had to have it on a non-county owned property,” Gainer said. Tim Hennigan, president of the F.O.P. Pasco Lodge 29, said his organization is pleased to be involved in the effort. “We’re very much a part of this community,” Hennigan said. The event also gives his organization a chance to raise its profile. “We want people to know who we are. We’ve always been in the shadows,” Hennigan said. In addition to benefiting the chamber, the event will help to raise money to pay for a permanent memorial for Pasco County’s fallen law enforcement officers, he said. Tickets for the March 11 concert are now on sale. The cost is $25 for open lawn seating, and $40 for preferred seating. Tickets can be purchased online at CentralPascoChamber.com.

BENEFIT, from page 1A The benefit will be on Jan. 24, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Skipper’s Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road in Tampa. “My goal is $50,000 for my 50th birthday,” Gigante said. “I’ve assembled three bands, four DJs — and I’m a DJ myself. So, at the end of the entire event, I’m going to be DJ’ing,” he said. He’s hoping for a big turnout. “We have a lineup that’s really fun. It’s going to be nonstop entertainment. “I start off with the USF “Hot” Band. They’re going to have about 30 members there,” he said, noting the band has waived its appearance fee. Gigante also has the Butch Ryan Band, which is made up of a bunch of band directors from Wharton; they’re going to do classic rock. “We’re going to have about 20 baskets, everything from pampered chef theme to sports themed to wine theme to IPA beer. There’s going to be a whole bunch of different things,” he said. Instead of holding a silent auction, he’ll be selling tickets for drawings to see who wins the baskets. “I’ve invited all of the krewes (of Gasparilla) because I’m part of the krewe life,” he said.

He also has talked to the principals at the 35 to 40 schools where he shoots school photographs, encouraging them to spread the word. After the party, Gigante plans to accompany a social worker to meet with homeless students who are college-bound to find out how he can help them. “I could buy shoes. I could buy computers. I could give them out to everyone. But, what if they don’t need that? What if they need rent for 2 ½ months? What if they need food? What if they need clothes? What if they need a laptop? What if they need books?” He wants to address specific needs. “I want to make sure that from when they graduate until they start college, they don’t fall off the boat,” Gigante said. He’s not sure how many students he’ll be able to help, or how much he’ll be able to provide. He’s going to start with the schools served by his photography business. In Pasco, those are Land O’ Lakes High, Wesley Chapel, Wiregrass Ranch, Mitchell, Anclote and River Ridge. In Hillsborough, they are Wharton, Jesuit and Steinbrenner. “This is a one-time deal for me,” said Gigante, who lives in Hunter’s Green. “It’d be great, if everyone, when they turned 50, would decide to do something like this,” Gigante said.

Carrollwood Day School to get artificial turf field By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

A $1 million matching gift donation program has paved the way for the construction of a new athletic complex at Carrollwood Day School. Located near the west entrance of the school’s Bearss Avenue campus, the new athletic complex will be a well-lit, multi-use space for the private school’s football, baseball and soccer teams. Billionaire entrepreneur Todd Wagner, and his wife, Keri Wagner, made the donation program possible by agreeing to put forward a $1 million pledge in August, contingent on the school also raising $1 million. The school reached the $1 million mark by mid-December, through contributions from numerous other families with ties to the school. “It kept coming in bunches,” said Head of School Ryan Kelly. “We had a number of families step forward from smaller amounts to larger amounts, from three figures to six figures. “It just was a community effort, and I’m just thrilled that families stepped up and supported it.” The multi-use athletic complex is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, just in time for the high school football season. And, instead of playing on a grass surface, home football games will be played on turf. “There aren’t that many (turf fields) around here, so I think from that standpoint, we’ll be one of the few independent schools that have a turf field,” said Kelly, who has been at the school for eight years and has been head of school for three years. The school’s athletic director, Baker Mabry, also is enthused about the turf field,

PHOTOS COURTESY OF CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOL

This $2 million multipurpose sports complex at Carrollwood Day School will also include a baseball facility. After this season, the baseball program will no longer have to travel to Citrus Park to play their home games.

Carrollwood Day School’s new athletic complex will feature a football field with a turf surface. Previously, the football program played their home games at Skyway Park.

Carrollwood’s soccer program has played their home games on a leased parcel of land. Next year, their games will be played in the new sports complex.

which he referred to as the “shiny piece” of the new complex. “We really pushed hard for turf,” said Mabry, who’s in his ninth year as the school’s athletic director. “Anybody that has to manage a field that has natural grass knows the headaches with that. I think everybody is pretty excited about the turf.” Being able to have stadium lights at the complex is another feature that stands out for Mabry, who noted other private schools like Tampa Catholic have “had to wait years” before getting approval for lights. “To be able to host night games, you know everybody loves the ‘Friday Night Lights’ with football, but just for athletics across the board…I think it’s really going to be a neat thing for our school,” Mabry added. The complex, which will also include a press box and enough bleacher seating for 500-plus people, should make Mabry’s job easier, as he won’t have to worry about leasing off-site fields for the various athletic programs’ practices and home games.

“It should streamline everything,” he said. “Having everything on campus, for me personally, will really help streamline that process, but I also think it’s going to raise expectations for our program, which is a great thing also. It keeps our coaches motivated. It keeps our athletes motivated. Hopefully, we’ll just continue to build.” Mabry believes the new complex will increase athletic participation and has other benefits, too. “I think it increases school spirit, and I think it’s going to increase participation across the board with our sports,” he explained. “We’re also hoping it increases enrollment, as people see our facilities and people see that we are a school on the move, and a school that’s growing. It entices more families to attend CDS (Carrollwood Day School).” Mabry said there’s been an added emphasis over the past years to get the school’s athletic facilities up to par with its highly regarded academic facilities.

“The No. 1 thing that we hear is the academic facilities are fantastic,” he said. “But people would ask, ‘When are the athletic facilities coming in line?’” The athletic complex is the second phase of the school’s capital campaign program, known as Patriot Pride. The first phase of the program, a 25,000-square-foot gymnasium, is currently under construction. Once completed, it will house three volleyball courts, two full-size basketball courts and a weight room. The facilities are a step forward for the school, Kelly said. “For our campus, I think it’s going to be a huge enhancement for our athletics and also our PE (Physical Education) program. We’ll be able to match what we do on our athletic side with what we do on our academic side,” he said. Carrollwood’s athletic director concurs with that assessment. “I think it’s just one of the final pieces that makes Carrollwood Day School one of the top schools in the area,” Mabry said.

The Wildcats’ junior post player became the fifth player in school history to surpass the career 1,000-point mark when she scored 17 points in a 79-45 victory over Cornerstone Orlando on Dec. 2. “It was great,” said Thomas who is coached by Karim Nohra. “When I got to 1,000 points, coach called a timeout and my (teammates) all gave me a hug and congratulated me.” Coach Nohra put the achievement in perspective. “It’s a huge accomplishment because not everybody gets to a landmark like 1,000 (points),” said Nohra, who’s in his sixth year coaching the Wildcats. “She actually did it early in her junior year, which is even more impressive.” Standing at 5-foot-10, Thomas plays with a bruising mentality, utilizing her strength to gain position in the post and get easy baskets, even against taller opponents. “She goes up against 6-footers and has no problem because she uses her size and abilities to her advantage,” Coach Nohra said. “She has good feet and she jumps pretty well for her size. When she comes to play it’s like, ‘Oh, my goodness, she’s tough to stop.’ ” In addition to averaging 13.2 points per game, Thomas is able to leverage her size and leaping ability to average 13 rebounds per game. Since her freshman year, Thomas has continually refined her game by improving her post up moves and shooting ability,

while learning to efficiently dribble with her left hand. “As a freshman, I was still learning and trying to develop my skills,” said Thomas, who’s been playing basketball since the sixth grade. “Now, I’m putting up more shots, rebounding more and taking the ball to the basket harder than I was my freshman year.” Coach Nohra added that Thomas, who has an offer to play college basketball at Flagler College in St. Augustine, has a better understanding of the game, and also has more control over her emotions compared to when she was younger. “I think she’s grown as a player in that a lot of things used to upset her and now, they don’t upset her as much,” he said. “Before, as a freshman, I had to sometimes yank her out of the game to calm her down because she’d be like, ‘I got fouled, Why didn’t (the referees) call a foul on me?’ ” As she’s matured, Thomas has used the lack of foul calls as a motivating factor to play tougher defense and make plays at opposite end of the floor. “I’m a lot bigger than my other teammates and I know I’m not going to get the foul,” Thomas stated. “It’s frustrating, but I know when I get back on defense I’m going to get a stop and I’m going to come back down (the floor) and score.” Coach Nohra believes Thomas doesn’t get more foul calls because the general consensus from refs and officials is that “she can take a beating” because of her unique combination of size and strength. “She’s got people draped over her and when you hit her, she doesn’t flinch,” he said. “She absorbs those hits. That’s how strong she is.” With just a few games left in the regular

season before district play, Coach Nohra is hoping to lead the Wildcats to the Class 2A girls basketball state championships for a fifth consecutive year. “It’s something that no team in the area can say,” Nohra remarked about reaching the state finals the past four years. “Our overall goal is always to win the district, be one of the best teams in the area and get to Lakeland for the state championships. … We have a great shot to get there.” Nohra, who’s been coaching for 23 years — with stops along the way at Tampa Catholic, Cambridge Christian and Wesley Chapel high schools — subscribes to a philosophy that focuses on playing up-tempo, utilizing defensive pressure systems and scoring baskets quickly in transition. He refers to his coaching methods as “choreographed chaos.” “If you looked at our team, you’d say, ‘What in the heck are they doing? That’s not what normally happens,’” said Nohra, who’s amassed over 500 career wins. “We do not follow standard basketball protocol…like a point guard must dribble down the middle of the court or when you line up for a free throw, you have two people from your team on the line. “I think our success lies in the fact that we do things so differently than other teams do.” From a player’s perspective, Thomas said many of Coach Nohra’s drills seem peculiar in practice, but end up benefitting the team in live-game situations. “Every practice we go through drills and sometimes I’m thinking like, ‘What is he doing? These drills are not made for me. This is not going to work,’ ” Thomas said. “And then, when he explains it we go into a game and we do it and he says, ‘This is the drill I

Trail extension receives rave reviews By Kevin Weiss

A

new 4.35-mile section of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail is receiving widespread approval from walkers, joggers and cyclists, alike. “The general feedback has been very positive,” said Forest Turbiville, Hillsborough County’s director of conservation and environmental lands management. “I mean, people love it.” The $6.2 million project, which was unveiled on Dec. 1, featured the completion of the northernmost segment of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail, making it the first-paved, multi-use trail constructed in a Hillsborough County preserve. From the Lutz Lake Fern Road trailhead, the path extends 1.5 miles east and then north to connect with the Suncoast Trail. Additionally, it extends nearly 3 miles to the southwest along the crossing at Lutz Lake Fern Road, as well as nearly 3 miles to the southwest along the edge of Brooker Creek Preserve. “I think one of the things (that stands out) is that it goes through the edge of a nature preserve, and I think that really makes it unique,” Turbiville said. “To have 4.5 miles of new trail, the majority of it going through a nature preserve, gives the user that different experience maybe from some other parts of the county that are more developed.” Since it’s opening, the new section has been a hot spot for exercisers looking to distance themselves from the noise and commotion of city life. “Oh, I love it. It’s great,” said 41-year-old walker Jeff Hebrank of Odessa. “You’re walking out in the woods, away from the traffic. It’s nice and quiet. It’s beautiful with natural surroundings.” Polk County resident Paula Mitchell, 64, said the trail’s new section is “a wonderful place to walk.” “The trail has more nature than the part heading up along the Suncoast Parkway, which is not as picturesque because you’re along the highway,” said Mitchell, who spends her weekends in Lutz. “The (new trail) has a lot shade and foot trails where you can get off the paved area and go hiking through the woods.” Seventy-year-old Bob Zook, a seasonal resident from Columbus, Ohio, was especially impressed with the trail’s mix of “beauty” and “scenery.” “It’s a combination of what I’d call ‘Old Florida’ and some of the newer, more modern parts of Florida,” said Zook, who leads a senior citizens biking group in New Port Richey. “It goes all the way out to the Suncoast Trail, so you have the combination of going along a busy highway versus being out in the middle of basically nowhere. Quite often, that’s what bikers like—a variety of scenery.” Zook remarked that it is one of “prettier trails” he’s ridden on over the years. “It’s obvious (Hillsborough County) spent an awful lot of money on it,” he added. Lutz resident Mike Lopez, 51, who typically rides his bike about 10 miles per week on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail, commended Hillsborough County officials for doing a “great job” with the new section. “At first I thought: ‘What are they doing? Why are they putting this trail in?’ “But, after I rode it, the first thing I thought was, ‘Oh, it’s so nice. Finally, my taxpayer dollars are being used for something I like,’ ” Lopez said. Lopez enjoys the convenience of a signalized crossing at Lutz Lake Fern Road, where he can ride his bike directly from his home to the trailhead, without having to worry about using a car and having to pay a $2 parking fee. “It’s very relaxing to get away from a hard day’s work,” he said. “Just one subdivision over and the next thing you know, you’re in the woods.” The signalized crossing is not only con-

Those utilizing the new 4.35-mile segment of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail can stop at the trailhead at 7020 Lutz Lake Fern Road. It features 50 parking spaces, restrooms, a picnic area and large maps of the trail. New Port Richey seasonal resident Bob Zook, 70, leads a pack of riders north on the trail, passing southbound riders, south of the new rest facility at 7020 Lutz Lake Fern Road. Zook also leads a group of senior bicyclists every Tuesday from the Ja-Mar Mobile Home Community.

Odessa resident Jim Griffin, 53, is out on the trail at least twice a week, riding for as much as 30 miles to 40 miles each time. Griffin said the new portion is ideal for making sweeping turns on his road bike at high rates of speed.

It’s nice, because we can nearby fast-food restaurant or department ride from our neighborhood on the side- store. The only issue Wolthuis has come across is the trail can be difficult to navigate when there are large crowds of people walking in groups with their pets. One time, she almost got into a wreck, because a dog was in her pathway as she was biking along the trail. “I was coming around a corner pretty quick, and the dog was on the leash but kind of extended out, and if the owner didn’t pull him back quick enough, it would have been a disaster,” Wolthuis said. “I’m not saying we should exclude the dogs, but that would be the only thing, especially when it’s very, very congested like that, and you’ve got bikes, people rollerblading and then you mix dogs in there on a long leash; you can forget it. “I don’t know really how to fix that. You just have to kind of be aware of your surroundings,” she said. When less congested, the 12-foot asphalt path has proven to be wide enough for West Chase winter resident, Bob Nichols, 63, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, secures his more avid cyclists like 53-year-old Jim Griffin, of Odessa, to safely make wide turns bicycle to the back of his car after a ride on the new segment of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail at high rates of speed. that connects with the Suncoast Trail to the north.

Paula Mitchell and Ruddy Arzon, of Homeland, walk the trail 1.5 miles at least once a week since the new segment opened. The pair noted how well maintained the trail is.

“They’ve cleared the vegetation off so you can see ahead of you as you’re making these large sweeping turns,” said Griffin, who uses a 22-speed racing bike to ride 100 miles per week. “It’s very important because…I’m riding a racing bike with skinny tires and 120 pounds of pressure in them. …We’re running 20 miles per hour average. “They’ve got it set to where you come on a turn, you can see clearly ahead,” said Griffin, a member of the West Coast Florida Cycling Club in Tampa. The new section’s grand opening was scheduled in August, but delayed until December because of flooding. “If I have a complaint with it, it’s during rainy season,” Griffin said. “It was in the water; spots where water was covering it, so they postponed the grand opening. They did some remediation, and it looks like they got into some ducts and trenches and pits to keep the water from crossing the trail.” With the trail free of flooding, and open every day from dawn to dusk, Griffin has found it to be a “beautiful” location to train with his 55-member cycling group, “We use it a lot.A lot,” he stated.

INSURANCE COMMISSIONER RESIGNS Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty has announced his resignation, effective May 2. McCarty, who was the state’s first appointed insurance commissioner, has had the post for 12 years. McCarty plans to pursue other job opportunities, according to a news release from Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. He was appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush in 2003 and served under three governors. According to media reports, he survived efforts last year by Gov. Rick Scott and some legislators to oust him from office. However, McCarty said he was not forced to resign. Scott’s spokeswoman, Jackie Schutz, issued a statement thanking McCarty for his service and wishing him the best of luck in his next endeavors. Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano said Florida consumers are losing one of their greatest advocates. “Commissioner McCarty not only stood

up for the consumer, he had an incredible grasp of the complexity of insurance in all its forms,” Fasano said in a news release. “His voice of warning or support could change the tide for a piece of legislation. He truly was an individual who, even though powerful, behaved at all times like a gentleman. He is a class act whose shoes will surely be hard to fill.” Scott and his cabinet will appoint McCarty’s successor.
