Pasco County Schools has big plans By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Schools expects 2018 to be a busy year for planning, designing, renovating expanding and building new school projects. Among the largest renovation projects are Land O ‘Lakes High School in Land O’ Lakes and Woodlands Elementary School in Zephyrhills. John Petrashek, director of construction services for Pasco County Schools, said he expected the first phase of a massive remodeling job at Land O’ Lakes High to be finished in time for teachers to move into the renovated spaces during the holiday break. “There’s going to be reshuffling of teach-

ers and students into those new areas that were just complete,” Petrashek said. “Then, we’ll start Phase Two.There’s five phases to this project. We’ve never undertaken five, independent, separate phases.” When the project is ultimately finished, the school will have a better flow, Petrashek said. “It’s going to improve the environment for teachers and students to come to every day,” he said. He also praised Land O’ Lakes High Ric Mellin for his leadership during the renovation. The renovation began in June 2017, with completion expected in the summer of 2019. Meanwhile, work continues at Woodland Elementary School.

The project is adding eight new classrooms, remodeling restrooms, adding a new cafeteria and stage, and providing a covered corridor leading to the cafeteria from the main building. “That’s going be so nice for that campus,” Petrashek said.“That’s bringing some tremendous improvement there. Woodland now has more than 900 students, with many housed in portable classrooms. Once the expansion is complete, the portables can be moved to other locations that are overcrowded, and the Woodland students will be able to move into permanent classrooms. The new cafeteria will have a stage and See SCHOOLS, page 11A

When Chelsea Caso recently went to watch “The Greatest Showman” at Cobb Grove 16 in Wesley Chapel, she wasn’t going to watch just any movie. She was going to watch a movie that she is in. And, the young woman who grew up in Lutz, didn’t go to the viewing alone. She joined 115 of her favorite people for a private screening. Her family was there. Her neighbors were there. Dancing friends she’d made through the years were there. Former teachers were there. People from every part of her life were there — to share a moment with her that had been about 18 years in the making. “We’re just bursting with pride,” her mother, Kim Caso said, adding that having a private screening with family and friends had been part of the plan ever since Chelsea landed the role. Chelsea, who has been dancing since she was 2, is Dancer Oddity No. 5 in the film. “I’m the tattoo lady,” she said. It’s a nonspeaking role, but offered Chelsea the chance to dance — the thing that she loves best. During the audition, she recalls thinking: “This is exactly what I want to do.” The movie, which stars Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron, has already been nominated for a Golden Globe for best motion picture, musical or comedy. Hugh Jackman also has been nominated for best performance by an actor in that category. Chelsea is still trying to take it all in. “I don’t have words yet. I really don’t. It’s just so much to process,” she said, before joining her friends and family for the private screening. “I took my grandma and my mom and my godparents this morning, and they were all crying,” Chelsea said. “I was sitting there thinking, all of the hard work, all of the hours and all of the work that she’s put in — it makes it all worthwhile,” said Eileen Hoffman, of Lutz, who is Chelsea’s grandma. “I am so thankful that she is part of something that is so amazing. To be in a movie of this caliber, with the actors that

are in it — the music, the choreography, the songs — all, wonderful,” Hoffman said. “It’s the most amazing feel-good movie that I’ve seen in a very long time.”

LOCAL GIRL MAKES GOOD Chelsea attended Lutz Elementary, Martinez Middle School, and Steinbrenner High School for one year before transferring to Blake High School in Tampa, which has a performing arts magnet program. “When she was at Blake High School, we took her every morning and picked her up every day. From Lutz, that’s a little ride,” Hoffman said. Chelsea also studied dance at Karl & DiMarco in Tampa, where her mom worked before starting Next Step Dance Studio in Lutz. Kim said Chelsea has “worked so incredibly hard, sacrificed a lot, and just has done so very, very well.” Chelsea was just 9 when her mom began

taking her to New York for dance classes. And, when Chelsea was 14, she auditioned for The Ailey School Summer Intensive Program and was accepted. “We stayed up there for six weeks with her every summer,” Kim said.“I was up there for two weeks. Her dad (Andy) was up there for two weeks, and my mom (Eileen Hoffman) was up there for two weeks. We did shifts,” Kim said, noting she also has a son, Carson, who is now 15 and attends Wharton High School. After graduating from Blake, Chelsea moved to New York intending to pursue classical dance. But, she changed her mind and decided to explore commercial dance, which includes such things as television commercials, music videos and movies. Chelsea attended Broadway Dance Center, where she took a program introducing her to the commercial dance world and See SHOWMAN, page 11A

Dispute involves Epperson and Mirada value for Mirada approved for Connected City school site

By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Developers of Epperson and Mirada – the first Connected City communities – recently rezoned their master-planned communities. Pasco County commissioners approved the changes, which consolidated prior approvals under the umbrella of the state-approved Connected City corridor. The corridor covers about 7,800 acres in northeast Pasco County. Its borders are Interstate 75, State Road 52, and Curley and Overpass roads. Construction is underway at both developments. Epperson will soon be the first North American community to open a Crystal Lagoon. The 7.5-acre lagoon, with its crystal blue waters, is a featured amenity offering pristine views, kayaking, swimming, paddle-boarding, cabanas and sandy beaches. Mirada, with a total of about 1,800 acres, is expected to feature its own 10-acre lagoon.

At build-out, Mirada is expected to have the following:

By Kathy Steele

• More than 4,000 single-family houses • About 1,500 age-restricted single-family houses • About 900 apartments • About 421,000 square feet of retail • Nearly 288,000 square feet of office/medical/hospital/university • About 200 hotel rooms

Developers for master-planned communities Epperson and Mirada won unanimous approval for updates on their projects in the Connected City. But, the vote by Pasco County commissioners on Dec. 12 left unresolved a dispute between Metro Development Group and Pasco County Schools over the value of a Mirada school site. Also unresolved is the timing for construction of the Mirada school, which will have students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Metro Development has agreed to donate a minimum of 44 acres in Mirada for the future school. However, school officials can opt for less acreage. Developers pledged about 11 acres in Epperson for an elementary school.

Epperson, with a total of more than 900 acres, is expected to have the following: • More than 1,600 single-family houses • About 125 age-restricted single-family houses • About 550 apartments • More than 290,000 square feet of retail • More than 577,000 square feet of office/medical/hospital/university • About 200 hotel rooms

ne of the pleasures of getting older is that during the holidays, I no longer fret about finding the “perfect” gift for those I love, or worry about which relative I’m obligated to spend Christmas with, or stress about hosting holiday parties. This year, I celebrated Christmas with my daughter and Florida family over New Year’s, and will open presents in midJanuary with my son’s family in Kentucky. With family celebrations delayed a bit, I had time over Christmas to reflect on 2017 and to think about the many things I am excited about in the new year. Since many of my achievements and aspirations involve this newspaper, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts with you.

The Laker/Lutz News continued to grow in circulation, content and advertising revenue in 2017. Not too many years ago, many people believed print was dead — especially newspapers. But, that certainly is not the case here at The Laker/Lutz News, as we continue to buck the downward trends reported by most daily newspapers. This past year, we added more than 1,000 papers to our home delivery routes, bringing our weekly circulation up to 45,322. We continue to add circulation, so we can deliver to new households going up in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel. New residents are keenly interested in their new community, and like you, look to us to keep them informed about their neighbors, things to do, government, schools, local sports, business openings, roads and growth issues. Our newsroom expanded this past year with the addition of freelance photographers Randy Underhill and Christine Holtzman. They join longtime photographers Richard Riley and Fred Bellet as regular contributors to our papers. Madonna Jervis Wise, a historian living in Zephyrhills, also began writing occasional columns for us, joining Doug Sanders, another local historian. Other regular contributors are Betsy Crisp, who writes our What’s Cookin’ column and Nicole Pinson and Whitney C. Elmore, who write about gardening topics for Nature Notes. I’m proud of our editorial team that received a total of 15 awards from the Florida Press Association and Community Papers of Florida. This work has been accomplished by Editor B.C. Manion, staff writers Kevin Weiss and Kathy Steele, and editorial assistant Mary Rathman, as well as freelance contributors. Matthew Mistretta and Stefanie Burlingame have used their skills to present a well-designed newspaper, with outstand-

ing content, to our readers every week. We also earned many awards on the advertising side of our business, including Best of Show at the Awards for Excellence ceremony sponsored by Community Papers of Florida. This prestigious award recognized “Fun on 41 – Discover the Wonders,” a fullpage ad that uses a hand-drawn map to illustrate shopping destinations and restaurants along U.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes. To stay on top of the many new businesses opening in our area, we added new sales staff in 2017 — Cheryl Michel in Land O’ Lakes and Anne Kibbe in East Pasco.Anne performed so well in Dade City and Zephyrhills that she was recently promoted to sales manager, and works closely with Cheryl and Rachel Thompson, our passionate classified sales person. This sales team joins Terri Williamson, our longtime senior account manager who works with businesses in Wesley Chapel and Lutz. Terri played a key role in the launch of our monthly section,There’s No Place Like Home, that’s written for folks looking to buy a new home in Pasco and north Hillsborough.Terri’s involvement with the Tampa Bay Builders Association has been instrumental in this section’s success, and is a tribute to her commitment and hard work. Backing up Terri is team member Carolyn Bennett, whose superb organizational skills keep Terri moving forward. And, backing me up is Accounting Manager Mary Eberhard, whose financial oversight of our company keeps our cash flow maximized and my stress level minimized.

LOOKING AHEAD

We’ve had a strong fourth quarter and expect business to continue at a brisk pace, as we enter 2018.We are well-positioned to grow along with our community, and we are excited about the New Year.

The Crystal Lagoon will be the centerpiece featured at the master-planned community of Epperson. The lagoon, which opens in spring 2018, holds 16 million gallons of crystal blue water. Signage at an overlook tells the story of Connected City, the surrounding community of Epperson and the Crystal Lagoon.

Crystal Lagoon ‘clear blue’ star at Epperson The Crystal Lagoon at Epperson will have its grand debut in spring 2018, with Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps headlining the festivities. Phelps is the global ambassador for Crystal Lagoon Inc., which built its first lagoon in Chile in 2006. The massive swimming pool, with a patented technology to keep its waters crystal clear, was the brainchild of biochemist and real estate developer Fernando Fischmann. At Epperson, the 7.5-acre lagoon began filling up with approximately 16 million gallons of water, purchased from Pasco County. With that task completed as of Dec. 26,

Epperson, and Metro Development Group, soon will have the distinction of hosting its spring grand opening for the first Crystal Lagoon in North America. A walkway overlooking the lagoon offers sweeping vistas of the blue waters, landscaping and ongoing construction at Epperson. Signage at an overlook tells the story of Connected City, the surrounding community of Epperson and the Crystal Lagoon. About 70 homes are occupied at Epperson, according to Greg Singleton, president of Metro Development Group. More homes are under construction, and additional lots are being prepared for even more homes. When completed, the lagoon will be the featured centerpiece of the community.

Grand Horizons hosts Christmas celebrations By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons

Twenty-seven Grand Horizon ladies attended the annual Lunch Bunch Christmas luncheon at The Cheesecake Factory in Brandon on Dec. 12. Since I was unable to attend, Joyce Bell said they all sat together at a large table, which made it nice to socialize. She also said that the menu had many choices, so it was fun making a decision on what to eat. There was a soup, salad and half-sandwich platter, and enchilada and burrito dishes. The portions were generous, but no one passed up desserts of cheesecake. Many took the dessert home. It definitely sounded like everyone had a good time and plenty to eat. There was a Christmas show on Dec. 14, featuring Johnny M,The Brooklyn Balladeer. The show was in the community center, and approximately 60 people attended. A separate area was provided for those who wanted to dance. Before the show began, Joyce Bell presented to Beth Ayers a check representing monies collected from the Grand Horizons community for Meals on Wheels. Beth re-

layed her thanks. Johnny M performed for two hours and sang many songs, including “I’ll be Home for Christmas, “Blue Christmas and “White Christmas. He did a fine rendition of “Let it Snow by Dean Martin, and people were swaying in their seats for “Jingle Bell Rock. During the evening, he walked through the audience and sang to individuals. He performed some Elvis Presley tunes, such as “Devil in Disguise and “Little Sister, and he shook his hips at the appropriate times and did several antics. He also took several requests and tried to accommodate all. He closed the show with “Behind Closed Doors, a Charlie Rich hit, and “Goodnight My Love. Gary Wilcox hosted the event, which included many Christmas songs, some country songs and much more. The following day, there was an appetizer potluck, and 56 residents were there to enjoy it. This was hosted by Al and Sandy Lindke and their son, Greg, in appreciation to all who donated grocery store gift cards and food items to the First United Methodist Church’s Food Pantry.

A full week on the high sea By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons

Approximately 50 Grand Horizon residents, plus several friends, met at the community center on Dec. 3 to await a brand new bus that took us on a 5-hour bus ride to the port of Miami for a cruise on the Norwegian Getaway. The bus ride was long but passed quickly enough, with all the conversation going on. Some people spent the time reading, working crossword puzzles or doing other activities. WINTER COMMENCEMENT Pasco-Hernando State College hosted its winter commencement Dec. 14 at its West Campus in New Port Richey. Two commencement ceremonies honored graduates earning bachelor and associate degrees, and certificates. The commencement also included presentations of two $10,000 donations to scholarships provided by Dr. Rao Musunuru, PHSC District Board of Trustees and local cardiologist. The two scholarship donations were given to the PHSC Foundation in honor of Sen.Wilton Simpson, and Pat Mulieri. This year’s winter graduates included students in The Laker coverage area who have overcome adversity in pursuit of a higher education. Matthew Kurtz, of Dade City, earned his Associate in Science degree in drafting and design technology. As an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) student, Kurtz found the restraint and regiment of public education did not match his way of learning. He dropped out of high school and

obtained his GED, prior to enrolling at PHSC. Tara Buzina, of Land O’ Lakes, earned her Associate in Arts and is currently working full-time as a firefighter/EMT at Tampa Fire Rescue. She plans to pursue an Associate in Science degree in paramedics, an RN degree, and a bachelor’s degree in emergency medical services at the University of South Florida. then signed with an agency called MSA, which has offices in New York and Los Angeles. She had been working at a fitness place for about a month, when her agent called her to go to an audition. She needed to be at the audition in two hours, the agent told her. Chelsea said she was at work and couldn’t leave. The agent said she had to find a way. The last fitness class was over, so Chelsea cleaned things up and asked her boss if she could go to the audition. The boss let her leave. “I ran home, got ready, did my makeup on the way to this audition and didn’t really know what I was auditioning for. I just knew where I had to be and what the time was. “I got there and I saw a couple of my friends and I said,‘What is this? What are we auditioning for? “They said,‘It’s something to do with Zac Efron. We don’t really know,’” she said. “During the audition, I was like,‘Oh my God, this is what I want to do.This is awesome,’” Chelsea said. She left feeling good about the audition, and an hour later her agent called to let her know she had a callback for the next day. Chelsea called her boss to say she couldn’t come into work the next day, but fortunately there was someone who could cover for her, she said. She went to the audition and danced again. “They called people back in to start singing, and I’m like,‘Oh, I’m cut. I don’t really sing.’ “They said, ‘OK, these are the people who we want to sing. I didn’t get called, so

MIRADA, from page 1A But, it is the Mirada school site that is at the center of the differing opinions. The appraised value of the land affects the calculation of Metro’s impact fees and credits, and the revenues available to the school district to build the school. The credits will be based on the actual acreage given to the school district and a fair market value appraisal of the site. School officials want to rely on 115 percent of the Pasco County property appraisal. They say that is a general standard used in other school site negotiations. Instead, Metro Development will be able to get private appraisals, which generally tend to be higher than county appraisals. That puts the school district at a disadvantage, said Ray Gadd, the district’s deputy superintendent. “It’s a big issue when the economy is growing because land is at a premium,” he said. Metro Development representatives see it differently. Epperson and Mirada are within the borders of the state-approved Connected City corridor, which encompasses about 7,800 acres in northeast Pasco. The state authorized, and the Pasco County Commission approved, a land development code for Connected City that includes a package of special conditions and incentives. The special district is expected to attract commercial and residential projects that fos-

I’m like,‘OK, I’m cut. Onto the next.’” But then, as she was gathering her stuff, someone came and called her name, and a few others, too. The person told them: “Not all of the parts in the movie are singing. Don’t book anything.” Chelsea called her agent to find out what that meant, and her agent said she’d have to wait to hear from the casting agency. That was in August of 2016. Three weeks later, Chelsea found out that she’d landed the part.

there are music and band rooms in the new building. “It’s going to be comparable to any new school, in what we have to offer,” Petrashek said. The district is also moving ahead on plans to construct Cypress Creek Middle School, off Old Pasco Road in Wesley Chapel. Last fall, the district opened Cypress Creek Middle High School, which is serving students in grades six through 11 this year. The district’s original plans were to open a high school and a middle school on that site, but it simply couldn’t afford to do that, so it opened the single facility to serve both age groups. Now, it is planning to build a separate middle school, for students in grades six through eight. Once that opens, expected in 2020, the existing facility will be used only by students in grades nine through 12. On the same campus, Pasco-Hernando State College is planning a $15.5 million performing arts center that is expected to be used both as an educational facility and a cultural arts facility. Cypress Creek Middle School’s design is underway, Petrashek said.“That’s going to be 1,600 student stations,” which will make it the district’s largest middle school to date. The middle school is being designed with the performing arts center in mind, Petrashek said. It will have a fine and performing arts wing, and will include a small black box theater, which will be separate from the main school building, so it can be shared in the after-hours. The middle school curriculum will be rich in performing and fine arts, and will include band, chorus, orchestra, dance and visual arts. Zephyrhills High School will also be undergoing a major remodeling, similar in scope to what’s happening at Land O’ Lakes High School, Petrashek said.

In addition to updating the school, the $26 million project also will add student capacity. “We’re trying to increase capacity by 500 students,” which will push the school’s total capacity to about 2,000 students, he said. The idea is to prepare for the growth that’s occurring along the State Road 54 corridor, he said. The district is looking for more cost-effective ways to accommodate its growing enrollment, Petrashek said. Another significant project on the district’s drawing board involves a kindergarten through eighth grade school planned for Starkey Ranch. That school is expected to open in August of 2021. Typically, a kindergarten through eighth grade school is built for 1,200 to 1,250 students, he said. “We’re going to try to have it be a 2,000student station, depending on budget,” he said. “The need is there. The growth is coming,” he said. The school would accommodate 1,200 middle school students and about 800 elementary students, he said. “Because it’s a very compact footprint, we would have to go vertical,” Petrashek said, adding it would be a single, three-story building. Plans call for a number of shared uses on the site. The library will be used by the public, as well as by the school. The idea is to share the facilities, allowing the school to use them when it needs them and the public to take advantage of them when they’re not. There also will be tennis courts, a softball field, a track and field, and other fields that can be used for soccer or football, Petrashek said. The site will have a black box theater, too. “There’s shared parking, shared roads, shared fields, shared facilities,” Petrashek said.

A MUSICAL ABOUT DREAMING, DIVERSITY, ACCEPTANCE

“The Greatest Showman” is a musical inspired by P.T. Barnum. It celebrates the birth of show business and tells the story of a visionary who rose from poverty to create a worldwide sensation. It’s also a story about diversity and acceptance, and about breaking down barriers based on race and social class. It took four months of rehearsal and three months of filming to make the movie. Every day, Chelsea spent four hours in hair and makeup. “They just put the tattoos on with water. It’s like a transfer sheet. I used to have to go home with them on. It was too much to redo them every day,” she said. Now that the film has been released, Chelsea is getting ready to move to Los Angeles. “It’s going to be a brand-new world. I have to kind of start over, but I feel with this on my resume now, it might be a little easier to get my foot in the door,” Chelsea said. And, maybe, just maybe, the movie’s cast will be able to make an appearance at the Academy Awards, her mom said. “There’s talk they’re going to dance at the Oscars. We’ll see. We’re hoping.” ter high-end technologies and innovative jobs. Metro Development controls about 35 percent of the special district’s land. Attorney Joel Tew, who represents Metro Development, said both sides can sit down and reach a mutual agreement on land values. Issues of where to build the school and the amount of land needed also are negotiable, he said. “We’re happy to do that,”Tew said.“We clearly have to provide a school site that works.” Another issue is the timing on school construction. Metro Development is eager to get a school as soon as possible. But, school officials say they can’t simply start building until Mirada is filling up with residents, and students. “I can’t build schools where I don’t have bodies,” said Gadd. The question is when will Mirada reach “critical mass” with enough students to justify opening a school, he said. If Metro Development and school officials can’t reach an agreement on their issues, then the land would revert back to Metro Development. Tew said developers might then seek out a charter or private school to locate in Mirada. (Charter schools must gain approval by the school board, but are operated privately). Gadd hopes the negotiations on the school site begin sooner rather than later. “The longer it goes, the higher the cost (of the land) goes,” Gadd said.

Local football players sign with colleges By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

S

everal of the area’s top football players took advantage of a new NCAA rule allowing prospective student-athletes to sign their National Letters of Intent (NLI) in December, rather than waiting until February to put pen to paper. Approved in May, the college football early signing period created a 72-hour window for signings from Dec. 20 to Dec. 22. The next opportunity to sign an NLI will be at any point between the first Wednesday in February (Feb. 7) and April 1—also known as the traditional signing period. Here’s a look at a few of the top athletes in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area who participated in the first-ever early signing period for football:

ISAIAH BOLDEN, CORNERBACK, WESLEY CHAPEL HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE: FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY (TALLAHASSEE)

The highest-rated football prospect in Pasco County waited until the third and final day of the early signing period to make his official announcement to Florida State. But, it was hardly a surprise he was headed there. Bolden de-committed from the University of Oregon on Dec. 5—the same day head coach Willie Taggart left his post at the school to accept the Florida State job, replacing Jimbo Fisher. Bolden had an in-home visit with Taggart on Dec. 10, then took an official visit to Florida State on Dec. 15 — before ultimately signing with the university a week later. A consensus four-star prospect, the 6foot-2, 175-pound Bolden is ranked among the top 30 or so cornerbacks for the 2018 recruiting class. His senior season ended prematurely, however, after he was kicked off Wesley Chapel’s football team in early October, playing in just three games. The prior year he helped lead Wesley Chapel to a 7-2 record and near playoff appearance, after transferring from Bartram Trail in Jacksonville. Bolden’s dismissal didn’t deter major college programs from pursuing him, however. Besides Florida State and Oregon, the rangy athlete boasted about 30 offers from other major FBS programs, including Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma and Michigan, among others. Local fans wanting to witness Bolden’s athletic prowess still can. He recently joined Wesley Chapel’s varsity basketball team, where he’s averaging about 11 points and eight rebounds per game as a forward.

JORDAN MINER, CORNERBACK, WIREGRASS RANCH HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE: PENN STATE UNIVERSITY (STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA)

Like Bolden, Miner opted to join one of college football’s blue chip programs at Penn State University — a school he verbally committed to back in July. A four-star prospect ranked among the nation’s top 50 cornerbacks for the 2018 recruiting class, Miner also had offers from nearly 30 Division I programs, including the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Florida,Tennessee and Wisconsin. Miner’s productive four-year varsity career at Wiregrass Ranch culminated in the football program’s best record ever (9-3) and first playoff win. The 2017 Sunshine Athletic Conference East defensive player of the year proved to be a Swiss Army knife, of sorts, for the Bulls this season. Besides tallying 39 tackles and four interceptions, Miner was an integral part of the

team’s offense and special teams—racking up nearly 1,200 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns. Various scouting reports laud the 6-foot1, 180-pound Miner for his speed and fluidity, as well as his ball skills. His size as a defensive back is another noted plus. Meanwhile, Miner is the second member of his family to play college football. His older brother, Jaye, was an All-State linebacker at Wiregrass Ranch from 2011 to 2014. He later played college football at Florida Atlantic University, a Division I FBS program in Boca Raton. Until his college gridiron career gets rolling, Miner can be found on the hardwood as an integral member of Wiregrass Ranch’s varsity basketball team, which currently stands at 10-3. Its Feb. 9 matchup against Wesley Chapel—and Bolden—will certainly be one to watch.

MICHAEL PENIX JR., QUARTERBACK, TAMPA BAY TECH (DADE CITY NATIVE, PASCO HIGH TRANSFER) COLLEGE: INDIANA UNIVERSITY (BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA)

The Dade City native surprised many when he spurned major college programs in favor of Indiana University, a school that has struggled to win consistently in recent years. The lanky 6-foot-3, left-handed signalcaller committed to the University of Tennessee in April, but de-committed in mid-December, after a coaching change. He also had scholarship offers from Florida State, Oregon,Arizona, South Florida and many others. Though headed to the Midwest, Penix will be surrounded by Bay Area ties, as the Hoosiers’ 2018 roster is expected to include a dozen players from Tampa, Largo, Clearwater and Spring Hill. Moreover, Indiana head football coach Tom Allen has several Tampa connections. He was defensive coordinator for the University of South Florida in 2015, and had coaching stints in the 1990s at Armwood High School and the now-defunct Temple Heights Christian School. Hoosiers quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan also coached at USF in 2013. Penix played his first two seasons at Pasco High School before transferring to Tampa Bay Tech, finishing his high school career with 6,986 total yards and 76 touchdowns. He appeared destined for football and athletic success at early age. His father and uncle both starred on Pasco High’s football team. Penix Sr., later played college football at Tennessee Tech University, where he met Penix’s mother— who was on the school’s track and field team.

Wiregrass Ranch’s Jordan Miner signed with Penn State University, a school he committed to in July. Miner was perhaps the most versatile player in Pasco County this season, making an impact on offense, defense and special teams. He’ll likely play defensive back at the next level.

Wharton High offensive tackle Lavel Dumont (No. 75) signed with the University of Toledo during the early signing period. The threestar prospect is coveted for his size, athleticism, flexibility and potential to improve.

LAVEL DUMONT, OFFENSIVE TACKLE, WHARTON HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE: UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO (TOLEDO, OHIO) Dumont’s first season of organized football was in 2016. Just two years later, he’s headed to the Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) ranks. After verbally committing to Toledo in June, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive lineman didn’t change course, signing with the Ohio-based university on Dec. 20. Dumont’ primary recruiter was Toledo running backs coach Marquel Blackwell— a former standout quarterback at USF, who later coached at Freedom High School in Tampa. A consensus three-star recruit, Dumont had close to 20 offers, mostly from midmajor schools like Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Central Michigan, Marshall, Tulane,Western Kentucky and others. A basketball player by trade, Dumont began to take football seriously about two years ago, making significant strides in the weight room and with game fundamentals. Dumont’s rare combination of size, flexibility, athleticism—and developmental potential — intrigued Division I programs early in the recruiting process. He reportedly earned his first collegiate offer in June 2016 — from Florida A&M University—before ever playing in a varsity football game. Meanwhile, Wharton teammate A.J. Hampton is also expected to sign with Toledo during the traditional February signing period; the 5-foot-11 cornerback verbally committed to the school in July.

Dade City native and Pasco High transfer Mike Penix Jr., is heading to Indiana University. A Pasco High transfer, the lefthanded quarterback finished his career at Tampa Bay Tech, where he developed into one of the Bay Area’s most productive football players.

Gaither High’s Donovan Jennings (No. 72) signed his national letter of intent to the University of South Florida. The jumbo 6foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle paved the way for teammates to compile nearly 2,900 rushing yards this season.

DONOVAN JENNINGS, OFFENSIVE TACKLE, GAITHER HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE: UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA (TAMPA)

Jennings, like Dumont, is a relative newcomer to organized football—first playing as a freshman in high school because he always exceeded the size limit for youth-league teams. It’s not surprising why: Jennings stands at a towering 6-foot-5 and whopping 310 pounds. After early struggles picking up the game, Jennings thrived as an upperclassman. His blocking skills helped pave the way for Gaither running backs to rack up nearly 2,900 rushing yards this season, and more than 1,500 rushing yards the year before. Uncommitted throughout the recruiting process, Jennings ultimately picked his hometown team for the next level. A consensus three-star recruit, he also had offers from Marshall, Old Dominion, Toledo, Central Florida,Virginia and others. Jennings now joins a long line of Gaither High products to play at the Division I FBS level. Some more recent Cowboys football alums include Decalon Brooks (Florida State University), Estafano Feliciano (Old Dominion University), Alex McGough (Florida International University), Shane McGough (Florida International University), Ernest Suttles (Memphis), Shug Oyegunle (Florida International University) and Amani Oruwariye (Penn State University). Elsewhere, Jennings’ teammate Matthew Wood signed his national letter of intent to Holy Cross University, a Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) program in Worcester, Massachusetts. Wood tallied 261 tackles in three varsity seasons as a linebacker.

Program Manager Amie Devero, of PanasonicCityNOW, joined the board of directors of the Pasco Economic Development Council.

PanasonicCityNOW joined the Pasco EDC as a corporate council-level investor. “The innovation and technology PanasonicCityNOW brings to the table is crucial in a time when technology is everchanging,” said Bill Cronin, president and chief executive officer of the Pasco EDC. CityNOW is inspired by the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town, a Panasonic-led development in Japan, about 30 miles outside Tokyo. With a special focus on the United States, the company supports smart and sustainable developments, neighborhoods, campuses, districts and cities. The Pasco EDC’s board is responsible for governing the organization and guiding its economic strategy. It works in partnership with Pasco County in promoting economic growth in the county. For information, visit PascoEDC.com.

SHADOW TRAINING CENTER

Representatives of B & W Associates filed a pre-application and scheduled a Dec. 26 meeting with Pasco County planners to discuss a proposal for a private training facility outside Dade City, with shooting ranges for

The project is under contract pending the county’s approval, according to the preapplication submitted by B & W Associates.

Be eco-friendly:

Recycle your Christmas tree By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

The holidays are over. Bright lights, ornaments, tinsel and artificial Christmas trees are being packed away for next year. But, if that Christmas tree in your living room is a real tree — what’s next? Pasco County Recycling is asking residents to be eco-friendly. Recycled trees can be ground into mulch or firewood chips or repurposed in wildlife habitats. The county provides several locations where trees can be dropped off and recycled. The one requirement is that the trees be cleaned of all decorations, tinsel and metal hooks. The following locations are open for Christmas tree recycling during normal business hours through Jan. 7. • Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park (formerly Land O’ Lakes Community Center),

5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. • Wesley Chapel District Park, 7727 Boyette Road (at the north end at Overpass Road) • John S. Burks Memorial Park, 1322 Gene Nelson Blvd., Dade City • Sam W. Pasco Recreational Complex, 9836 Chancey Road, Zephyrhills For more information, call (727) 8564539, or visit PascoCountyFl.net.
