Learning from Mistakes I

want to share with you a good book to read on board this summer (along with our August issue of Lakeland Boating!). “Rumsfeld’s Rules: Leadership Lessons in Business, Politics, War, and Life” is written by Donald Rumsfeld, former United States Secretary of Defense. There’s no ideology involved; just decades of notes on leadership with a sprinkling of quotes from some of Rumsfeld’s personal heroes. While Rumsfeld was his Chief of Staff, former President Gerald Ford ordered these aphorisms distributed to his White House staff in 1974. The collection became known as “Rumsfeld’s Rules.” The notes were first gathered on 3- by 5-inch cards in a shoe box and then typed up informally over the years. The non-partisan rules have enlightened presidents, business executives, chiefs of staff, foreign officials, diplomats and members of Congress. The Wall Street Journal called it “required reading.” Here’s a typical inspirational passage: “Few of us move seamlessly through life, skipping along the top of the waves from one success to another. Making mistakes is human. Having courage to try and to risk mistakes distinguishes a leader from the rest. It is easy to look back on things in life that did not work out the way you had hoped and become paralyzed by second-guessing yourself. As John Ried, a distinguished former British Defense Minister put it, ‘Of course with hindsight, everything is perfect. It’s the only exact science known to man.’ There were any number of things I said or did during my time in public life that in retrospect I would have handled differently. And of course there were mistakes I made as a son, husband, a father and a friend. Learning from mistakes is important. So too is the ability to recover from them. The same is true of disappointments.”

Creative staff Art director/production manager: Christy Tuttle Bauhs Contributors Mark Corke, Mike Harris, Michael Hauenstein, Jodie Jacobs, Paul Kemiel, Capt. Frank Lanier, Paul D. As Rumsfeld so astutely points out, learning from our mistakes is, indeed, important. But it’s equally as important to avoid making mistakes if you can help it. We try and help prevent boaters from making some common faux pas this month with an excellent article penned by regular Lakeland Boating contributor Michael Hauenstein. “Sun 101” (p. 30) warns boaters of the dangers of prolonged or intense sun and UV exposure, and how failing to protect yourself can lead to all kinds of health ailments, including skin cancer. All too often, boaters don’t take the risks seriously; but the danger is real, and the consequences could be permanent, and even deadly. Protecting yourself is easy — if you know how. We share with you advice from both medical doctors, skin care experts and manufacturers of protective gear and clothing that’ll help keep you safe out on the water. Enjoy summer!

A lesson in life: Much joy can come from the occasional stretch; doing something that is a little beyond one’s comfort zone; pushing the financial envelope a bit. We named our boat (a 1985 Carver 32' Aft Cabin) Pouting Girl, after an American primitive style painting (ca. 1830) that we didn’t buy back in the late 70s, before we started our family. This unique painting was of a little girl who did not want to sit for the artist, who captured the endearing pout on her face. It was beautiful. But we didn’t buy it! We didn’t do the stretch, overly cautious about starting our family. My wife, Mary, and I have talked about the painting every year since, wishing we had made the stretch. When we saw our boat, which was “priced to move” and in great shape, I knew we had to do

painting, but we’re glad we made the stretch into boating, especially enjoying the Great Lakes. So… look to the things you want and what you want to do. Go for it! Find your boat. Do the stretch. Go get your Pouting Girl. It makes life even more rewarding. We hail out of Belle Maer Harbor on Lake St.

it… because good deals like it don’t happen all the time. It was our first boat and a bit of a stretch, but it has brought great joy cruising the Great Lakes. Pouting Girl is named in honor of the stretch we didn’t make. We’re still looking for the namesake

Clair. This photo was taken in Presque State Harbor, Lake Huron. I’m sure there are other great stories out there. And thank you for your magazine! —Ron Simpson, Troy, Michigan

Solar-powered Boat Becomes Research Vessel The world’s first solar-powered boat to circumnavigate the globe has just signed up for a new assignment: Scientific research vessel. According to a recent report in The New York Times, Turanor PlanetSolar, a 100-foot, $17 million catamaran, will spend the summer cruising the Gulf Stream in order to study the role of atmospheric aerosols and phytoplankton in regulating climate. The boat, which The Times reports started its journey in Miami in mid-June with a crew of five, will stop in Newfoundland and Iceland, eventually ending its voyage in Bergen, Norway sometime in August.

Brunswick Announces New Production Facility Brunswick Fort Wayne Operations, producer of Harris FloteBote and Cypress Cay Pontoons, announced it will open a new 360,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on North Hadley Road in Fort Wayne, Indiana sometime this month. The company considered other locations, but decided to stay in Northern Indiana and invest $1.2 million to expand its current operations. The new facility is being retrofitted and remodeled with plans to begin production in August 2013. Brusnwick expects to hire an additonal 200 full- and part-time employees by 2016 to add to its current roster of 261 full-time workers.

Shipwreck Set for Excavation The remnants of a ship believed to be the oldest shipwreck ever discovered in the Great Lakes will soon be explored via a test excavation at its final resting place in northern Lake Michigan, according to a recent report published on the website MLivE.coM. According to the report, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the state archaeologist’s office approved a plan by Great Lakes Exlopration Group to identify and excavate the vessel it believes to be Le Griffon, a ship built and commanded by Rene-Robert Sieur de La Salle on behalf of King Louis XIV. During its maiden voyage in September 1679, Le Griffon departed from the area near present-day Green Bay, Wisconsin with a crew of six and was never seen again.

As a founding member of the Antique Boat Auxiliary of the Thousand Islands Museum in 1967, Cox helped capture the history of boating throughout the region. He played a pivotal role as the Auxiliary transitioned into the Thousand Islands Shipyard Museum, and then in 1990 when it was renamed the Antique Boat Museum (ABM). “The ABM lost a true mentor, benefactor and an influential friend of the museum and the Thousand Islands,” says Frederick H. Hager, ABM executive director. “The knowledge Bob shared with the ABM extends far beyond the Thousand Islands.”

Rent Your Boat Through Cruzin.com Boat owners looking to make a few bucks off their hard-earned investment have a brand-new opportunity to do so — through the recentlylaunched website cruzin.com. The site allows boat owners to open their vessel up to a nationwide network of interested charterers who can reserve and book boats online. The website makes boater-to-boater charters simple and secure, providing the most comprehensive coverage and protection in the peer-to-peer rental market. Cruzin supplies $1,000,000 in hull and liability insurance for both owners and renters, and BoatU.S. towing service is provided with every rental. The service also requires one of the tightest pre-qualification processes in the industry, as charterers must be experienced boaters (at least two years) and pass a credit check. For more information, visit cruzin.com.

remains of Henry B. Smith Discovered in Lake Superior Almost 100 years after the freighter Henry B. Smith sunk during a November 9 storm on Lake Superior, a group of shipwreck hunters thinks it has located the vessel — and much of it is still intact, according to a recent report published in the Duluth News Tribune. The newspaper reports that the group discovered the ship back in May in about 535 feet of water off the shore of Marquette, Michigan. While the ship’s official identity is still unconfirmed, all signs point to it being the Henry B. Smith, which was carrying a load of iron ore when its crew of 25 disappeared after the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. The storm was one of the worst in Great Lakes history, wrecking more than a dozen ships and killing about 250 sailors.

WI Association Enjoys Boatbuilding on a Small Scale

Don’t be a fool and mis-fuel! Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) reminds boaters to pay attention to the fuel that they put in their gas tanks. Don’t use gasoline with an ethanol content above 10 percent (E10). Anything higher (E15) is dangerous!

Have a passion for boatbuilding and desire camaraderie with those who enjoy boats and the water? Then you’ll fit right in with members of the Wisconsin Scale Boating Association (WSBA). WSBA is a group of active boat and ship modelers with interests in all types of vessels. WSBA operates R/C model boats powered by electricity, wind (sailboats) or live steam; no gas or glow fuel-powered boats are allowed. PIER 290 Restaurant Enjoy lakeside dining at this Lake Geneva hotspot.

L

ocated at pier 290 on the west end of Lake Geneva, the appropriately named PIER 290 Restaurant offers casual dining at Gage Marina in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. It’s open year round, whether you’re coming via road, foot, water… or even ice. The contemporary American restaurant, which is just 90 miles north of Chicago and 50 miles south of Milwaukee, is also a popular destination and/or stopping-off point for those hiking on the shoreline walking path from Lake Geneva to Fontana, Wisconsin. PIER 290 offers parking for more than 30 boats and even valet assist during peak times. “Several of the Lake Geneva Cruise Line boat tours offer drop-off options in Williams Bay, so visitors can enjoy a cruise on the water that can include a layover for lunch here,” says Jennifer Moore, director of PR and events for Gage Marine. And when the lake freezes over, the restaurant is easily accessible to ice boaters and snowmobilers. PIER 290 opened at Gage Marina in July 2012, following a major marina renovation. Though they operate independently of each other, the two enjoy a synergistic relationship. For example, PIER 290 provides Gage Lake Geneva Boat Club members and in/out valet customers a convenient

location to gather and dine, and the marina holds events at the restaurant all summer long, including Thursday Wake Nights and Wake Camps. “Together, Gage Marina and PIER 290 Restaurant provide opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy lakeside living, even if they don’t have a home on the water,” Moore says.

A local approach to food Then there’s the food, which focuses on clean flavors and fresh ingredients. The menus change seasonally, with daily chef specials and brunch specials offered as well. “We use locally grown foods to ensure quality and sustainability, and to minimize our impact on the environment,” Moore says. Aside from what they can grow at Gage Farm, they use a number of other local suppliers, including the Wisconsin Grass-Fed Beef Cooperative, Sassy Cow Creamery, and honey from Chef Nick Mehmke’s own farm. Popular dishes include Gulf shrimp scampi, falling-offthe-bone, grass-fed beef short ribs, pan-roasted mahi-mahi, slow-roasted pork sholder and more. Adds Moore, “It’s a regional as well as international combination of techniques and flavor profiles.”

Beyond just eating, the restaurant, which can accommodate around 170 guests, is an ideal spot to catch up with friends over drinks — indoors or outdoors. The indoor bar boasts three TVs, a fireplace and a stage, which gets plenty of use; there’s live music Thursday through Monday all summer long, including open mic nights. There’s also an outdoor bar and dining space with five TVs, two fire pits, two white sand beaches, and a fireplace built from bricks repurposed from the historic Yerkes Observatory. A popular outdoor event at the restaurant is Yoga on the Beach, which takes place Wednesday and Saturday mornings starting in early June. The family-friendly restaurant also features a children’s menu, making it a place everyone can enjoy. “PIER 290 at Gage Marina offers a unique opportunity to enjoy lakeside dining on Lake Geneva in a setting steeped in Lake Geneva nautical history,” says Moore. Smooth Operator Tips and tricks for proper outboard troubleshooting.

T

he small, efficient outboards found aboard many of today’s dinghies are extremely reliable — a fact that makes it all the more shocking when they stop running. One minute you’re zipping through the harbor at the apex of maritime evolution; and the next you’re drifting helplessly, no better off than some primitive, seagoing ancestor astraddle his floating log. But all is not lost. Even though modern outboards are decidedly high-tech, many of the problems you’ll experience can be diagnosed and repaired with simple tools and basic troubleshooting skills. Here’s how to resurrect your “floating log” and bring it back into the 21st century.

Pre-departure Checks Before departing, take a few moments to ensure all is as it should be: n Is there adequate fuel on board, and is it fresh and uncontaminated? n Are oil reservoirs topped off? n Is the engine in neutral and the safety lanyard attached (especially important for engines that can start in gear)? n Do you have a small tool kit aboard, along with a spare shear pin and spark plug?

First things first As with any breakdown, where your outboard fails will determine the necessary first steps toward rectifying the situation. The options for a boater unable to start his or her outboard while tied to the dingy dock at the yacht club tiki bar differ from those whose outboard stalls mid-harbor. While heading back to the bar is certainly an attractive option in

the first scenario, the initial priority for the drifting boater will likely be stabilizing the situation (deploying an anchor, for example) in order to safely troubleshoot the engine. Secondly, no matter how reliable a piece of gear is, problems will occur (typically at the worst possible moment), and preparation beforehand is crucial. Familiarity with your outboard’s operation, conducting routine maintenance and carrying a small tool kit (and spare spark plug) are all good strategies that will serve you well in the event of a breakdown. The same is true while preparing for those times you won’t be able to restart the engine. It’s only then that you’ll realize that pair of oars, handheld VHF radio or emergency flares are worth their weight in piece of mind. For ease of use, troubleshooting tips listed in this article have been divided into two basic scenarios: One with the vessel underway, and the other while it’s safely secured alongside a vessel or dock. Some tips will be redundant (due to the variety of scenarios presented), and although situations themselves may vary, three basic truisms can be

1: Here we see three major players in the continued operation of your outboard — the gear shift is in neutral, the choke button is in the “off” position, and the kill switch/safety lanyard is attached. 2: While flushing the engine, always check the telltale jet to verify good water flow. 3 & 4: Always ensure that the fuel valve is in the “on” position and that the fuel tank vent is open. 5: The spark plug connection must be tight and corrosion free. 6: A basic tool kit will go a long way towards solving many problems.

applied whenever troubleshooting a stalled engine: Proceed logically and methodically; never assume anything (full tank, kill switch in place, etc.); and check everything twice (as there could be multiple problems).

Underway blues

Good Maintenance Practices Although outboards should ideally be inspected and serviced annually by a professional, basic maintenance and care is within the ability of any boater. Probably the easiest thing you can do to extend the life expectancy of your

Let’s say the dingy was launched from your anchored cruiser, the outboard cranked on the first pull, and off you go towards shore for lunch. The engine runs great initially, but after a few minutes it starts to miss and surge, then stops all together: n Check your fuel level (a common problem that’s bitten novice and experienced boater alike). n Ensure the fuel tank air vent is fully open; a partially closed vent can prevent adequate fuel flow. n For non-integral tanks, verify that fuel hose connections at both tank and engine are tight; also check the fuel hose and primer bulb for damage or blockage. n Check the fuel filter/water separator (if so equipped).

outboard is simply flushing the engine thoroughly for 10 to 15 minutes

Using the same scenario, let’s say the engine doesn’t sputter or surge, but stops suddenly. In this case you’d: n Check the safety lanyard/kill switch (to ensure it hasn’t been accidentally pulled out). n Check the fuel system (as per the previous scenario). n Verify that the spark plug wire is tight and connected. n Check for overheating, the most common cause of which will be water intake blockage (weeds, plastic bags, etc.). Always keep an eye on the telltale stream of water from the outboard, which lets you know if the amount of cooling water flow is adequate. If the engine is running normally but the telltale isn’t peeing freely, chances are it’s simply clogged, a situation that can normally be corrected by threading a piece of stiff monofilament fishing line in the telltale and rotating it. n Check the oil level (4-stroke engines) or verify correct oil mixture in the case of 2-cycle engines.

burn all the remaining fuel in the carburetor. Follow up with a check of fuel lines

If the engine continues to run fine but you lose headway or experience excessive vibration: n Make sure the engine wasn’t accidentally knocked out of gear. n Inspect the propeller for obstructions (weeds, fishing line, etc.) or damage (missing blades, dings, etc.). n Check that engine mounting hardware is tight. n Verify the propeller is turning; if not, the shear pin may be broken.

Trouble at the dock Okay, so you arrived in time to catch the buffalo wing lunch special and now it’s off to your anchored boat for the noon siesta. After the first 15 or so fruitless pulls on the starter cord, you realize two things almost immediately: You’re not getting any younger, and there seems to be a problem with the outboard.

photos by capt . frank lanier

after each use. This is important not only in saltwater (due to its corrosive nature), but also after operating in brackish or freshwater areas to remove contaminates such as mud and silt. While flushing the engine, check the telltale jet to verify good water flow. Carefully run a finger through the stream; it should be warm, but not hot. A weak stream could indicate a damaged water pump or impellor, a situation that should be corrected immediately (before it leaves you stranded). Now’s also a good time to pull the cover and check for fuel or water leaks, all of which must be addressed promptly if discovered. After flushing the outboard, shut the fuel valve off or disconnect the fuel line (depending on whether you have a separate or integral tank) and let the engine and primer bulbs for cracks, worn spots, leaky fittings or corroded clamps. Once you’ve finished flushing the engine, wipe everything down and spray liberally with a good anti-corrosive lubricant. — F.L.

For those cases where the engine simply refuses to start: n Verify the safety lanyard is attached. n Check that the engine is in neutral (many newer models will not start in gear). n Verify the throttle control is in the “start” position. n Check your fuel level. n Verify the fuel shutoff valve is in the “on” position and that the fuel tank vent is open. n For portable fuel tanks, verify all fuel hose connections are tight and that the primer bulb is firm (you may also want to check the arrow on the primer bulb to ensure the fuel line is connected the right way). n Ensure the spark plug wire is firmly connected and free from corrosion. Let’s say the outboard starts, but misses or otherwise runs roughly: n Verify the choke button is pushed in (i.e. in the “off” position). n Check the spark plug connection for looseness and corrosion. n Pull and inspect the spark plug itself; check gapping and clean or replace if necessary.

An ounce of prevention The best way to solve potential outboard problems is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Routine maintenance combined with a commonsense approach to use will go a long way in this regard. LB

sharpen Your Weather eye Minding weather forecasts is critical for boaters.

A

ssemble any group of boaters and chances are it won’t be long before the topic of conversation turns to the weather. In fact, weather is so intrinsically linked to boats that over the years a few popular sayings have developed to serve as reminders of the effects Mother Nature has on boaters. For example, most folks are familiar with the saying “Red sky at night, sailors delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning.” Back in the old days before radios, weather fax and other such devices, keeping a “weather eye” meant exactly that: Keeping a sharp lookout for changes in the weather that might have either a positive or negative effect on the progress of a ship at sea. For today’s recreational boater, regularly monitoring weather is equally as important. We want to know the basics: Are we going to have a pleasant weekend out on the water? Is it going to rain? Do we need sunscreen? Furthermore, we need to observe weather in order to make judgments about the safety of a particular trip; where we should go and what the conditions are likely to be when it’s time to head back. When I worked for the BBC in England, I remember talking to one of the meteorologists and asking him how he came up with the forecast. The first thing he told me was that he’d look out the window and see what the weather was up to at that particular moment; only then did he start to look at the weather charts, radar images and other data at his disposal. These days weather forecasting has become increasingly accurate, with the ability to predict weather patterns and trends sometimes even days in advance. The fact that it’s referred to as weather forecasting is an important distinction, as we ideally want to know what’s going to happen in the future. We can tell what’s happening right now because we’re actually experiencing it; but what we can’t be sure of is what’s on the horizon, and this information is most interesting to us boaters.

Products like the WeatherStation 150WX from Airmar Technology provide a reliable, accurate means to help boaters monitor weather conditions. The system is designed to “move” with your boat and is the only all-in-one weather monitoring solution that offers true and apparent wind speeds without additional sensors.

For a general overview of the weekend weather, the TV or radio is a great place to start. While not aimed specifically towards the boater, these broadcasts are great indicators of the generally expected weather. If the weatherperson says we’re going to have gales, it’s a good bet that we’re landlocked for the weekend. If the report calls for more

benign conditions, however, and it looks like we’ll be hitting the water, we now need to search for more in-depth information. [Note: It’s almost impossible to have too much information when it relates to weather conditions.] Before you leave home, or if you have an internet connection on your boat, the NOAA website (noAA.gov) is a valuable resource. Here you can obtain synoptic charts, wave heights for your boating area, wind strength and direction, and everything else that you’re likely to need — all for FREE! The only catch is that some of the information isn’t presented in a particularly user-friendly way, and it can often be difficult to interpret NOAA weather forecasts — especially if you’re a novice. I like the SiriusXM weather information (sIrIusxm.com/ sxmmArIne) that’s accessible if you have a SiriusXM account and suitable equipment aboard to receive the broadcasts. Many of the newest chartplotters can overlay weather information on a chart and you can see what’s headed your way. Best of all, because the information is transmitted via satellite, it’s not dependent on you being within cell phone range, so it will work in the center of any of the Great Lakes — where you will almost certainly be in a communications “dead zone.” Weather is a fascinating subject, and one that deserves more study. One of the books that I return to for sound advice is “The Yachtsman’s Weather Guide” by Ingrid Holford. This book offers a great introduction to weather, how to predict it with some certainty, and the pictures of cloud formations that will help you train your own keen “weather eye.” LB

S

ea Ray recently introduced the 21 Jet. The “Jet” denotes jet drive propulsion, but I think it’s an acronym for “Just Enjoy the Trip.” With sporty styling, seating for many passengers, Sea Ray’s intelligent use of every nook and cranny, and proven jet power, the 21 Jet delivers a new experience. Under the hatch are twin Weber MPE-850 turbo and intercooled four-stroke engines, generating 120 hp each and coupled to Weber jet drives. That’s some serious giddy-up! This is a sit-down-and-hold-on boat, and Sea Ray designed a floorplan for just that. Wraparound seating in the open bow, accessed via the walk-thru windshield, goes all the way to the forepeak, maximizing usage of the area. Fully padded bolsters add to the comfort level, and stainless steel grab rails add to the safety aspect. Seating aft includes a full wraparound bench seat up to the starboard helm with full combing, making any position cushy. Port-side seating also converts to a forward-facing lounger.

Speaking of the helm, the design is clean with a sports car look and feel. Stainless steel bezels accent the raised, back-lit gauges, and tilt steering with custom padding enhances the driver’s comfort. Interesting that there’s only one throttle control for both engines, offering easier operation. A console on the port side contains the standard stereo with CD player and MP3 port, 12-volt outlet (gotta keep the tunes juiced!) and drink holder. Need more storage? Not a problem. There’s a lined compartment in the deck sole. Through the center transom walk-thru is a versatile area that Sea Ray calls an “entertainment zone.” Here, aft-facing seats allow for donning skis or other water gear with access to the multi-tiered swim platform and ladder, or just a place to sit back and chill. Sea Ray has incorporated many of its experiences into this boat, including six thru-bolted cleats, cleanout ports that eliminate the need to jump in and remove obstructions like seaweed or eel grass, shallow draft, 25-quart cooler with dedicated storage, side panel storage, optional sport tower, and more. According to the company, the 21 Jet is “what a jet boat always wanted to be.” They may be right. LB

every seat is the best seat in the house aboard this luxury cruiser. by bing o’Meara

I recently caught up wIth Jim Thorpe and his crew from Spring Brook Marina in Seneca, Illinois. It was mid-June, and Thorpe and company were exhibiting at 31st Street Harbor, Chicago’s newest marina facility, for the 2013 Progressive Chicago In-Water Boat Show. They had impressive inventory on display, including, in my opinion, the virtual star of the show: The Prestige 500 Flybridge.

I was lucky enough to score an opportunity to take her for an evening cruise with Thorpe and see how she handled the waters of Lake Michigan. Spoiler alert: She was fabulous, and not just because she’s both easy to handle and maneuver and easy on the eyes; with this boat, every seat is the “best seat in the house” because of its impressive, open, airy layout. It makes her a real standout among competitive mid-range cruisers.

room a-plenty This particular line from French manufacturer Prestige (which has its U.S. headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland) has been a serial award winner both stateside and abroad. It’s easy to see why as I stepped aboard for my first look. The 500 is a three-stateroom yacht. The master stateroom is a large, full-beam layout located amidships. It is accessed by private staircase from the main deck. The bed is a generous queen size with ensuite head and shower facilities. Portside is a raised, 4-inch platform that’s home to two large, stuffed chairs on either side of a polished cherry wood reading table that snugs up to the hull just below the large picture window. There are two of these large windows, both to port and starboard, providing spectacular views while at anchor as well as bringing the outside light in. The VIP and guest staterooms both have large windows , too, and share a head. Each has a queen berth that can be separated into twin beds to accommodate various sleeping arrangements guests might require. A forward hallway connects the VIP and guest staterooms, head and stairway to the main deck. Crew’s quarters are located aft in what could be considered a very large lazarette accessed from the hatch on the aft deck. Open the hatch and climb down the ladder to a single berth and private head. When this room’s not in use as sleeping quarters, it would provide great additional storage.

open, airy elegance We accessed the main deck via the forward staircase, and standing on the landing looking aft the salon appears absolutely huge. Immediately to starboard is the double seat at the helm. Visibility is incredible, with sweeping, 360-degree views. With the aft glass doors open, you can see for what seems like forever. The placement of the helm seats and console are interesting. There are two: One in the main salon is located starboard, and the other on the flybridge is to port. Sitting at the console on the main deck, I am once again amazed at the visibility. Seamlessly blending into one’s surroundings seems to be an overarching theme of the 500 Flybridge. The forward wrap-around windshield is enormous, as are the side windows. When open, the starboard window, which opens and closes much like the windows of an automobile, provides excellent ventilation; sitting behind the wheel looking straight ahead over the sloping bow gave me better visibility than I get with my car.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

|

AUGUST 2013

Looking aft from my forward position, the C-shaped seating arrangement around the dining table is done nicely in cream leather for a sophisticated, tailored look. Directly across the salon on centerline is a two-person love seat upholstered in the same material. Large glass windows on either side of the boat allow for unobstructed views. The proportions are right on the money. The port-side galley that was designed to keep the chef involved in the conversation accomplishes even more: It puts everyone on the same level; utensils are within an arm’s length, there’s easy access to the refrigerator, ice and cook stations, etc. From the helm seat to the transom, flow on this boat is superb. The ladder to the flybridge is located to port on the aft deck. When you head up, make sure you take the sunscreen with you; the 500 has sun pads — lots and lots of sun pads — on the foredeck and flybridge. The helm and console are surrounded by them. On the starboard side aft on the bridge is an L-shaped seating arrangement complete with a six-person dining table. At high noon, if the sun is too bright, consider putting up the canvas bimini. A sink, grill and refrigerator all come standard on the bridge. When your afternoon lounging on the bridge is complete and you’d like to cool off, make your way down the stairs to the aft deck and onto the swim platform, where you can rinse off under the refreshing transom shower.

superior handling Our test boat was equipped with Twin D6 600 IPS Volvo Penta diesel engines with joystick control. We also enjoyed the benefit of a bow thruster. This might sound like overkill — until you’re being blown off the dock by a stiff breeze. The added power of the bow thruster slides you right in; hand in glove, it’s just that simple. With the Volvo pods and joystick control working in concert with one another, the piloting experience is intuitive, stress-free and, well, really fun. Once out of the slip with the windows cracked and aft doors open, noise level is a light purr. After we got up on plane and closed the windows and doors, it was nearly silent; you could carry on a normal conversation from 6 to 7 feet away, no problem… and no shouting. The 500 Flybridge reached a top speed of 28 knots at 3570 rpm and cruised along nicely at 21.5 knots and 3000 rpm. Looks, practicality and performance — this boat has it all. al Hunnicutt knows too well the dangers of sun damage to the human body. Hunnicutt is an avid boater, angler and outdoorsman, like so many of his coworkers at Glen Raven Inc., manufacturers of the Sunbrella fabrics that provide shade to millions of people, including boaters, every day.

But the story runs deeper for Hunnicutt. “My father passed away from melanoma, so it’s something I take personally,” says Glen Raven’s vice president of marketing. “Anytime you’re outside you’ve got to take protecting your skin seriously. We all love being outdoors, but you’ve got to protect yourself.” Hunnicutt says sun protection goes beyond having a good sun shade. Even under a Bimini or T-top, sunlight bouncing off the water can hurt your skin, he says, so it’s best to wear multiple levels of protection, including sunscreen and protective clothing. “It’s not a complicated subject,” he says. “It’s just an awareness issue. It’s something that’s easily forgotten when you’re excited, you’re getting out on the water. Just take a few minutes to put your shade up and put your sunscreen on.”

Skin damage: RiSkS and pRevention The main sun damage risk for boaters is skin cancer, and melanoma is the deadliest of skin cancers, says Dr. Jeffrey Benabio, M.D., a dermatologist at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 86 percent of melanoma skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun; 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers, including basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, are caused by UV exposure; and more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined over the past three decades. More than two million people are diagnosed annually with nonmelanoma skin cancers, which will cause an estimated 3,170 deaths in the United States in 2013, according to figures from the American Cancer Society, while an estimated 9,480 people will die of melanoma and 76,690 new cases will be diagnosed in the same span. Benabio says both long-term sun exposure and brief, intense exposure can lead to skin cancer. “All recreational boaters are exposed to sun damage,” he says. “The risk in the Great Lakes environment is that because you have intense, episodic sun exposure, the risk of getting sunburned is higher. We know that sunburns are an independent risk of developing skin cancer.” Benabio suggests looking for a sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum,” meaning that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) ratings refer to protection against UVB radiation, but both wavelengths

damage skin. And the level of protection is not in direct proportion to SPF number. “Choose an SPF of at least 30,” says Benabio. “Anything higher than SPF 50 does not have a significant added benefit.” He suggests reapplying sunscreen every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating; covering up with clothing; wearing wide-brimmed hats and wraparound sunglasses; going out in the early morning or early evening, when possible, to avoid the most intense UV radiation; and being mindful of the amplifying effect of sunlight bouncing off the water or boat decks. Other risks associated with sun exposure include accelerated skin aging and dehydration, the latter of which Benabio notes can be hastened by strong winds – so drink lots of water and eat water-rich foods like watermelon and cantaloupe, he says.

While skin protection has received quite a bit of press in recent years — and deservedly so — sun damage to the eyes remains somewhat under the radar. Boaters need to exercise the same caution with their eyes as they have begun to do

eye, but I think people are less aware that all the same forces that are at work [on the skin] can damage your eyes.” As with the skin, a person out on the water gets more UV exposure, in the same sunlight, than a person standing in a grass field, Bishop says. “Their environment is concentrated in UV,” she says of boaters. As an example, she cites a study of commercial watermen in the Chesapeake Bay that found a 1.6-fold increase in the risk of developing cortical cataracts, which are associated with the clouding of the eye’s lenses. Long-term sun exposure increases the risk of developing basal cell carcinoma on the lower eyelids, too, which are highly susceptible to skin cancer but often overlooked, Bishop explains. The importance of protection through sunglasses and other preventive steps cannot be overstated. Other risks include damage to the whites of the eyes — or sclera — which can develop bumps called pingueculae. Though not a cancer, pingueculae cause difficulty blinking and spreading tears. Sun damage also can cause accelerated development of naturally developing cataracts, she says. What’s more, one bad day in the sun can lead to cornea

with their skin, and Dr. Rachel Bishop, an ophthalmologist with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is keen to get the word out. “UV light damages biological tissues,” says Dr. Bishop, who is chief of consult services at the NIH’s National Eye Institute. “We know it damages the skin, and we know it damages the

damage, too, Bishop says. Called photokeratitis, the condition leads to blurred vision and severe eye pain. “Imagine a rug burn to your arm,” she says. “That’s really painful, but it will heal and probably return to normal, just as your skin would from a rug burn. We see that from boaters if somebody uses no protection on a bright day.”

keep it Covered Here are a handful of products designed to offer much-needed sun protection. Sunscreen: PUMA Ocean Racing has used Z Blok sunscreen in the last two Volvo Ocean Race round-the-world sailing events. It’s ideal for boating, according to the company, because it doesn’t sting the eyes, provides broad spectrum protection, and is fragrance free. The “Z” stands for zinc oxide, which, with Z Blok, rubs in clear. “Because zinc oxide is a physical block, as opposed to a chemical ingredient, it starts to work right away,” says Paul Fleming, co-owner of Z Blok. “And it won’t leach into your beautiful lakes like chemical sunscreens do.” Z Blok offers SPF 30 protection and comes in a 4-oz. tube for $14.99, a 2-oz. travel tube for $9.99, and a 0.7-oz. stick (for reapplication) for $9.99. zbloksun.com

Face, head and neck: Not unlike a bandana, the UV Buff is a multifunctional headwear piece that can be worn several ways to cover the face, head and neck. Some might recognize it from the reality TV show “Survivor.” In simple terms, it’s a tubular piece of fabric that is soft, breathable and stretchable. The UV Buff costs $25. The company also offers a line of gloves to protect hands from sunburns, blisters and cuts at a price of $27. buffusa.com hats: Performance hats from Sunday Afternoons are lightweight, breathable, quick drying, packable, moisture wicking, water repellant, and stain resistant with flotation in the brims and a UPF 50 rating. The Cruiser Hat is one of the company’s most popular models. It’s available in three different colors and costs $34. sundayafternoons.com

Sunglasses: A group of avid fishermen started Costa Sunglasses 30 years ago. Today, the company is a top choice for boaters. Costa’s 580 lenses offer 100 percent UV protection and polarization, and are available in a wide range of colors to suit local conditions and personal preferences. Tuna Alley sunglasses with top-of-theline blue mirror 580 lenses cost $249. costadelmar.com

Pants, shorts and skirts: Men and women can find stylish protection from West Marine, which offers a wide selection of apparel designed for boating and featuring UPF sun protection, including the Men’s Harbor Pants ($59.99) and the Women’s Tidal Skort, available in six colors ($44.99). westmarine.com

The lens of the human eye does a great job filtering UV light before it can damage the retina, according to Bishop, meaning that the sun probably does not cause macular degeneration. “So it’s not macular degeneration we’re worried about with sun exposure,” she says, “it’s everything else.” Happily, boaters can take steps to avert the damage. “It’s largely preventable,” says Bishop. “We don’t live in shade, but we’re able to protect ourselves from damage.” A good pair of sunglasses blocks 99 or 100 percent of UV light, she says, and the more area of your face they cover, the better. She also says lens shading does not impact eye health; the lenses could be clear, but as long as they block UV they’ll protect against the damage and diseases mentioned above. “It’s all about having that chemical coating on it,” she says. Polarized lenses also don’t affect eye health, she adds, but can improve optics — especially important for boaters.

Product innovations Evidence of heightened attention to skin health can be found in the marketplace. “In the last 15 or 20 years there’s been an increased awareness of skin cancer,” says Matt Crawford, a spokesperson for Buff USA, which manufactures a line of headwear and gloves that provide UV protection. “With that increase has been an increase in products with UPF [Ultraviolet Protection Factor] ratings.” Hat manufacturer Sunday Afternoons’ products carry a rating of UPF 50, which national sales manager Russell

Fabric treatment: Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, SunGuard is a laundry additive that washes UPF 30 UV protection into every item of clothing in a washload. The company claims the treatment is good for up to 20 future washings. A box of SunGuard costs $3. sunguardsunprotection.com

Hodgdon explains block 98 percent of UVA and UVB radiation — the highest rating available, he says. “Sun protection as a whole has really taken off in the apparel industry,” says Hodgdon. “The advantage of wearing your sun protection rather than applying sunscreen is that you never remember to reapply every hour and a half, and you end up scorched.” Even if it’s not a sunny day, he adds, it’s still a good idea to use sun protection out on the water.

Bimini tops like this one from Sunbrella provide excellent, all-day protection from harmful UV rays while enjoying time out on the water.

“Eighty percent of UVA and UVB can penetrate the cloud layer, which is especially important for boaters,” he says. “You can still get a sunburn on a cool, cloudy day.” LB

Boat tops: When it comes to fabric boat tops, the focus is on quality with Sunbrella. “If you’ve got something that’s going to hold up, you’re going to use it,” says Glen Raven’s Hal Hunnicutt. “I’ve got a T-top on my 17-foot Grady-White that stays out year round. It’s lasted years, it’s easy to clean, and I use it to avoid skin damage and to be comfortable.” With innovations like collapsible T-tops, extendable shades that cover sportfishing boat cockpits, and integral shades on wakeboard Mantis shade towers, fabric boat tops are being deployed in new ways as more and more boaters look to avoid sun damage. sunbrella.com

shirts: Columbia Sportswear offers a line of UPF sun protection apparel designed for the boating lifestyle, according to the company, with technologies like Omni-Freeze ZERO, which cools when wet, and Omni-Shade UPF 50 sun protection. Styles include the Men’s PFG Freezer ZERO Long Sleeve ($75), the Women’s Freezer II Long Sleeve ($58), and short-sleeve options such as the Men’s PFG Freezer Polo ($80) and Women’s Freezer II Polo ($48). columbia.com

Personal shade: The Mantis is like a personal Bimini top that stores compactly, deploys quickly and can be attached to rails, seats, rod holders and elsewhere. The manufacturer, Pro-Techt, offers 14 different mounts, and it’s available with Sunbrella fabric for $249.99. pro-techt.com — M.H.

Fox River

I

f you’re an experienced cruising boater, you may already know many of the ports along Lake Michigan. But do you know which port’s county has more than 1,200 linear miles of waterways, a 700-acre wildlife sanctuary that draws several hundred-thousand birdwatchers from across the globe, and an amazing river spot where the fish are so plentiful that attempts to select the “right” lure are made in vain? How about a port where the big decision is which group of slips to pull into for dinner, because so many good restaurants are either on the water or just a couple blocks inland? You’re forgiven if you didn’t say Brown County and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Unless you winter your boat at the town’s South Bay Marina or in nearby Door County, your northern Lake Michigan cruising experience may have extended no further south than Sister Bay or Sturgeon Bay. Given that the city’s reputation bursts onto the national scene each football season as home to the Green Bay Packers and the team’s historic Lambeau Field, it’s arguably easy to overlook this gem as a hot summer boating destination. But tucked into the basin of the Green Bay waters at the Fox River, the city is lined with docks where boaters routinely pull in to enjoy festivals, concerts and food. In addition, unless you’ve explored the northern reach of the Fox, you might not even know about De Pere, a charming river town of boutiques, yummy cafés, historic hotels and Saint Norbert College on the southern edge of metropolitan Green Bay.

South Bay Marina

Where to start You’re cruising south in the waters of Green Bay past “The Door,” then Kewaunee County when, as you near the mouth of the Fox River in the basin, the curving track of the wooden Zippin Pippin roller coaster peeks over shoreline greenery. Its historic look fits the vintage setting of the Bay Beach Amusement Park. Old-fashioned prices encourage family fun. For one 25-cent ticket, you can do the giant slide. Two of those tickets will get you a ride on the Ferris wheel.

Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary Owned by the city, the park is an easy mile walk or bike ride east on Bay Beach Road from South Bay Marina. Perfectly situated where the bay meets the eastern shore of the Fox River, the marina welcomes boaters with sparkling clean showers and restrooms, laundry facilities, pool and picnic grounds, and its casual Louie’s Lagoon for snacks and drinks. “We’re more than a parking lot for boats; we want to build a boating lifestyle,” says harbormaster/manager Lee Johnson. After retiring from the corporate world at age 55, Johnson and his wife, Pam (the cheery voice you hear when you call ahead to reserve a slip), chose harbor life full-time at South Bay, first opened by co-owners Angela Moore and Chester “Chip” McDonald in 2002. The marina, with space for 150 boats, recently added 10 floating docks and is dredging an area to add more. Large as it is, and even though Johnson says he’s never turned anyone away, he strongly recommends calling 30 days in advance if travel plans include a stay on holiday weekends or for the local Fourth of July celebration. “A lot of boaters come here for the fireworks,” he says. Johnson also recommends boaters check Green Bay’s festival schedule to tie in a visit with one of the town’s many food or music events, such as ArtStreet (August 23-25), a combo of performing and visual arts with food vendors flavoring the mix. “You can bike there — we have between 15 and 20 bikes, and we’re happy to transport people” he says. “They can call to be picked up.”

Lambeau Field Tour

Playgrounds of another kind Before biking or boating along the Fox River — it has a 20-mile Riverwalk — get to know the marina’s two neighboring playgrounds: Bay Beach Amusement Park and Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. The amusement park is a family playground for the young and young-at-heart. The sanctuary is a playground for families of frogs and foxes. The first is a trip back in time. The second is a place to lose track of time. At the amusement park, relive childhood visits to old-fashioned, small-town attractions

where rides like the Ferris wheel are fun, not frighteningly high. Or visit for a nostalgic peek at what these parks looked like years ago. Bay Beach is among the ten oldest, continually operating amusement parks in the United States, first opening in 1892. Cross the street from the amusement park to the wildlife sanctuary. The only problem is figuring out how much time to spend on the Wildlife Habi-Trek Trail watching bobcats, cougars, wolves and foxes outside the Woodland Building, owls and turtles inside it, and climbing the Observation Tower to see what other animals make the sanctuary their home. Save enough time to explore the three-story Nature Center and the colorful traffic at the bird feeders up close and almost personal on the other side of the center’s second-floor windows. A recent visit coincided with the annual spring warbler migration, but director Mike Reed pointed out that the sanctuary’s 700 acres attracted birds and visitors throughout the year. “We have a reputation as a really good place to bird watch,” says Reed. According to the sign-in book, the more than 400,000 visitors a year have come from as close as Illinois and Wisconsin and as far as Japan and Sweden. Another good visitor stop is the Observation/Rehabilitation Building for its animal nursery and Raptor Theater. The sanctuary currently is caring for two wolf pups. Be sure to allow time to pick up corn at the building to feed the ducks and photograph the waterfall and lagoons.

This is also the place to be for Fridays on the Fox, from 6-9 p.m. June 28 to August 10. Bands play swing, tributes, R&B and rock and roll. “When there’s a venue like the CityDeck and a band like Big Mouth, people know that’s the place to be,” says Jeff Mirkes, Downtown Green Bay and Olde Main Street executive director. To restock the galley, boat over on a Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. for the weekly Farmers’ Market. It spreads along Broadway across the river. You can pull in at CityDeck and walk across either bridge or tie up at Leicht Memorial Park on the west bank just north of the first bridge (Dousman Street) where you see Titletown Brewing Company. Docking at either place is free for transient boaters. With more than 200 vendors, pick up fresh fruit, veggies and homemade baked goods and candies while listening to the music floating down Broadway from bands on the Main and East stages. Leicht Memorial Park is also the place to dock if you’re in town on a Wednesday and can snag a dinner reservation at Three Three Five. A private club on Broadway that only opens to the public Wednesday night, Three Three Five’s small plate presentations and flavors are comparable to the best and most innovative restaurants in Chicago and other big cities. Chef Christopher Mangless, also known as the Traveling Chef, has prepared dinners for Hollywood celebrities and U.S. presidents. To eat on a deck overlooking the river, take the boat south of the third bridge (four-lane Mason Street Wisconsin Highway 54) where you can dock outside Jimmy Seas for a casual, Mexican-style lunch or dinner, or next-deck-over at OGAN, a high-end restaurant. Tall Ships Challenge 1671. The site is the last of the Fox River rapids as the river flows north into Lake Michigan. Formerly called Rapides Des Pères (Rapids of the Fathers), the town evolved into De Pere on the east bank. Its current configuration on both sides of the river happened in 1890 when West De Pere became part of the town. On the way to De Pere, gaze starboard before coming to the Highway 72 bridge and Dutchman’s Creek. You may catch a train tooting along the tracks at the National Railroad Museum. Not currently accessible from the water, its exceptional rolling stock and artifacts are a driving destination. South of the bridge look portside to see large, older homes on the east bank. If driving you’d see them on North Broadway before arriving at De Pere’s Voyager Park and downtown. The park, that slight promontory you spy jutting into the river, is your best base for De Pere. Tie up at the park’s mobile docks put out for the summer or leave the car in the park. Everything is within walking distance. Grab the fishing rod (fishing licenses are available online at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website) and definitely be ready to snap photos. De Pere’s new scenic, multi-year, multi-million-dollar Riverwalk, Wildlife Viewing Pier, and Fishing Pier opened in May. It’s hard to believe the wildlife you see cavorting and fishing in the rapids can ignore all the humans on the Riverwalk and the Viewing and Fishing piers. “People often comment that they had no idea there was such a wildlife presence,” says Allyson Watson, executive director of Definitely De Pere, a not-for-profit Main Street Program. “With the addition of the Fishing and Viewing piers, people have the ability to venture further out into the Fox other than by boat.” It’s also hard to leave the area to explore the town. But look for the De Pere Locks on the Riverwalk and the historic lock house scheduled to become a coffee house. The building housing Chateau De Pere and its atmospheric Café Chanson were an old mill. You can relax awhile with wine on the café terrace or try to book a room. The rooms have wonderful views of the locks and river.

Imagine hearing about long-ago life on the high seas while you help crew on a four-masted ship, or seeing a cannon go off from a boat as it did during the War of 1812. The Tall Ships, those historic and replica brigs, schooners and other high-mast boats that ply the Great Lakes and international seas, are pulling into Green Bay, Wisconsin August 15-18. The Tall Ships will be racing to Wisconsin from Navy Pier in Chicago (August 7-11) as part of the bi-national Tall Ships Challenge of Great Lakes maritime festivals and races. As of mid-June, nine Tall Ships have confirmed they will be docking at Leicht Park in Green Bay for tours and day sails August 16-18. However, some of the ships will take on passengers as the boats sail to the port from Sturgeon Bay on August 15. Greater Green Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau President Brad Toll says the Tall Ship Festival (sponsored by Baylake Bank) draws about 60,000 people. “We’re the only city in Wisconsin to host Tall Ships,” says Toll. “We’re very proud to be that city.” “Given our long history as a port city going back to 1634 when ships started arriving in our port, it’s very fitting tall ships come into our city. It’s a blast from the past,” he continues. “It’s a great festival and a great opportunity for residents and visitors to tour the ships, interact with the crew and experience what life was like on the seas back in those days. “ Among the ships docking in Green Bay is the Tall Ships America Flagship Niagara, which Oliver Hazard Perry captained to win the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. Day sails are being offered aboard the gaffrigged schooners Appledore IV and Haile & Matthew, the 1925 Hindu schooner and the fourmasted Windy. Tickets are $50-$60. Festival tickets for Leicht Park activities and a tour of docked ships are $12 for general admission and $10 for children 5-12 and seniors 62 and over. Sturgeon Bay to Green Bay tickets cost $275 apiece. The minimum age required to travel is 5 years old, except aboard the Niagara, which requires passengers to be at least 16 years or older. Paths from Voyager Park and the Riverwalk lead to town and yummy treats. Alpha Delights owner and baker Mary Pappas pays homage to Greek heritage where it’s impossible to walk in here without an “ooh” and “aah.” Think gorgeous cakes and flakey, light croissants. Leave room for chocolate and really great coffee. Nearby, Seroogy’s on Wisconsin Street has been turning out addictive chocolate since 1899. Cross the Main Street Bridge to the town’s western side for a homemade cup of coffee at Luna Café, where you can buy fresh roasted beans. You can also walk to St. Norbert College on the west bank.

Worth the drive Green Bay and De Pere are oriented to waterways, but as football and railroad fans will be sure to remind folks, some places are driving destinations. The National Railroad Museum, Lambeau Field and the Green Bay Botanical Garden are three such places. At the National Railroad Museum you can be a kid at heart and ride around the grounds in a bi-level 1920s rail car, a Silver Spirit’s fancy lounge and dining car, or an open-air rail car, depending on the weather and what’s currently on the track. Among the 70 cars and engines in the barns, you’ll find two cars that President Dwight D. Eisenhower used for traveling around Europe when he commanded the Allied Forces there during WWII. Inside the museum, cases are filled with dining-car china from different railroads collected by Jay Christopher.

“I think the biggest thing is that people don’t realize how much is here,” says museum director Jacqueline Frank. After receiving the official nod by Congress as the county’s National Railroad Museum in 1956, the museum was able to attract rolling stock, photos and artifacts. Among the stock are historic cars railroads no longer in need, such as a tank car for hauling pickles. “We are able to acquire really unique items,” Frank says. At Lambeau Field in the Green Bay neighborhoods west of the Fox, you’ll find visitors from across the country. No matter which football team or sports team is close to the heart, this place is one of NFL’s great stadiums and is home to a venerable football powerhouse. Best place to start is on the Robert E. Harlan Plaza, where 14-foot statues of team founder Curly Lambeau and legendary coach Vince Lombardi stand. The Packers’ home for the past 55 years has sparked “wows” since a major 2003 facelift. Go inside to see its awesome atrium and take the tour that allows you to run the ramp out to the “frozen tundra” to recorded sounds of audience applause. The tour is worth the time. Less than 10 minutes north and west of Lambeau Field, there’s something going on at the 47-acre Green Bay Botanical Garden, no matter the season. The garden hosts summer cookouts and concerts, fall harvests and festivals, and holiday lights. And if you don’t have access to a car, don’t worry; Enterprise does rental drop-offs for boaters at the South Bay Marina. Whether boating or driving, Green Bay is a worthwhile vacation destination. Sure, Lambeau Field is a must stop for sports fans; but there’s so much more to see and do than football in and around Green Bay. And much of it is on or near the water. LB

ituated on more than 6 acres of the spectacular Saugatuck Dunes at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River, this nearly 8,500-square-foot custom home is truly a stunner. The property boasts 378 feet of frontage on Lake Michigan and more than 650 feet on the river and enjoys easy access to the water via a walkout beach. “You don’t need any stairs,” says Stephen Neumer, project manager for Singapore Dunes, the larger community of which the home is a part. “You walk out your front door and just gradually walk the dunes and dune grass; eventually you are standing at the water’s edge.” Homes in the community can no longer be built as close to the water as this house due to legislation passed since its construction, making this a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “This is one of the most unique freshwater dune systems in the world,” Neumer says. “There’s nothing like it.” Designed by a renowned architect, the home makes the most of its natural surroundings, boasting a rounded two-story great room with wall windows that provide panoramic views

of the lake. High-end finishes and nautical touches like porthole-style windows have also been included throughout. In addition to the three bedrooms and three baths in the main home, there’s also a three-bedroom, two-bath guesthouse attached via a belowground passageway. Below the guesthouse is an underground four-car garage. Outside, extensive decking surrounds the house, a perfect place to enjoy the endless views to the north, west and south. Though the home was built in 1990, it has since been incorporated into Singapore Dunes, a new 320-acre housing development with 18 home sites ranging from 2 to 6 acres. And that means the home has access to association amenities coming soon, like a pool, pool house and tennis courts. The next phase also includes construction of 65 luxury condominiums and a private 65-slip marina exclusively for Singapore Dunes owners and their guests. “All will share Lake Michigan beach rights to low-bluff, pristine, sugar-sand beach they can walk for miles,” says Andrea Crossman of Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt. t’s all about versatility and convenience at Bridgeview Yachting Centre, a full-service marina located adjacent to the St. Clair River just five minutes from Lake Huron. Though the marina is located in the village of Point Edward, with its quaint downtown, it’s also just minutes away from downtown Sarnia. “With our geographic location, if it’s rough out on the lake, you can cruise down the river; and if Mother Nature is nasty on the river, you can head to the lake,” says Dave Brown, managing partner for the marina. Dating back more than 40 years, the marina has added amenities, new slips and services over time and now packs a lot into its 35 acres. “We’re really proud of the services we have on the premises,” Brown says. “We can literally supply any service that a boater wants.” Fiberglass and wood repair services are offered through T & M Marine. Bridgeview Marine Services runs the marine store and mechanical business. There are also canvas and

upholstery services, as well as a yacht brokerage. The marina offers approximately 45,000 square feet of inside heated storage, as well as four acres of outdoor storage on pavement. With more than 700 slips and 150 Rack N Launch members, there’s room for everyone. It’s a perfect spot for transient boaters needing larger depths, as the water depth runs from 7 to 14 feet. Typically 50 to 70 spots are available for transient boaters, and reservations are accepted. For boats without a deep draft, Bridgeview’s sister marina, Sarnia Bay Marina (which is operated and managed by Bridgeview Marina), is a perfect fit. The marina hasn’t overlooked the “fun” factor, either. There are 25 enclosed brick barbecues, more than 20 gazebos, a pool and lounge deck, open grass areas, and complimentary wireless internet for members and guests. And there’s plenty to do nearby. Adjacent to the marina is an executive par-three golf course, two hotels and a casino. Within walking distance is a beach, a huge city park and downtown Point Edward. LB

Leave Us to Beaver The ins and outs of exploring Michigan’s Beaver Island.

I

have no idea how many of you skippers made the long trek to Lake Michigan’s Beaver Island, but I’m pretty sure you’ve at least heard stories about the place. This self-contained little landmass is located about 30 miles northwest of Charlevoix, Michigan and is the largest of an archipelago of islands, including Garden, High and Hog. It’s a popular destination for cruisers heading east from Door County, Wisconsin and those heading west from upper Michigan because it pretty much cuts the open water boredom of Lake Michigan into two very manageable legs. Automobile cruisers can ride the Beaver Islander, a ferryboat that makes regular runs from Charlevoix’s Round Lake. If you’re cruising by air, Beaver has a full-service airfield as well. However you manage to get there, Beaver is a unique tourist attraction unto itself. Its known history dates back to the mound-building Indians of 700 A.D. Its cultural personality was established in the 1800s, with the attempt to separate the island from the United States as a Mormon kingdom. Its crescent shape is carved out by St. James Harbor, with a mile-long harborfront of civilized amenities — from dockage and service, to food, drink, shopping and lodging. The rest of the island is pretty much overgrown with brush and trees, punctuated occasionally by areas of housing and connecting roads. The overall area is around 6 by 11 miles, so it would seem logical that a tourist exploring by car would have no trouble getting around and getting back… or at least that’s what we assumed, anyway. After many visits to Beaver that mostly involved short stints focused on activities and offerings along the harbor’s edge, we decided to rent a car and explore the entire island. As I recall the only vehicles available to facilitate this adventure were either Jeeps or Geo Trackers. We chose the Tracker, mostly because the rental service was nearest to our dock, and “Tracker” sounded more like a vehicle meant for exploration. If you younger readers fail to remember the Tracker, it was a mini Chevy SUV, based on the 1980 Suzuki, with a sewing machine engine and minimal legroom. Nevertheless, the price was right — and the island was small. We packed ourselves in and headed out on a blacktop road to circumnavigate the island. Time has faded my memory of exactly when the blacktop transitioned into gravel, but there were still enough signs of civilization to keep us moving. It was after we passed the lighthouse on the western side that the gravel gradually morphed into a sandy, two-rut road. At the time we just accepted this as part of the charm of the island, until the

ruts faded out and we found ourselves running aimlessly on tall, wild grass. A mile or so further on, the grass thickened into swale, then brush, and eventually impenetrable trees. No signs. No warning. Just a wall of tree trunks that could stop even a Hummer dead in its tracks. With the sun directly overhead and no hint as to which way was east or west, our only hope was to backtrack and reconnect with a road that actually had a destination, and preferably the harbor. Needless to say we finally made it back before we ran out of fuel — or hope. Our log entry for that day made no reference to our failure to navigate this tiny island. The only reason I feel secure in sharing the details with you now is that enough time has passed to quell the sting of stupidity. For those of you curious enough to consider exploring Beaver Island this season, remember to take your GPS. We didn’t have that luxury. Back in our day, the only thing GPS stood for was “Get Perilously Stranded.” LB
