An Evergreen Holiday W

hile the temperatures drop and boats are out of the water, this remains the most wonderful time of the year — when families gather and enjoy their favorite holiday traditions. One such tradition is that of the Chicago Christmas Tree Ship. Many have heard the story of the Rouse Simmons — known as the original Christmas Tree Ship — and many might have purchased their very own Chicago Christmas Tree (as the tradition lives on today in Chicago’s harbor), but many may not know the family behind the legend. Heather Steinberger’s piece titled “Generous Hearts” (pg. 26) digs back in time to penetrate the legacy of the warm, generous Schuenemann family. It’s a true story of The crew of Deception (from left): Rowan, Greg and Capt. Rich. faith, hope and perseverance. Alaska’s Inside Passage (pg. 46) has given me the opportunity to flesh out my log book with the flip side of the Outside Passage cruise I had the pleasure of doing three years ago. When a couple from Whitehall, Michigan lost their camera overboard on a sailboat charter out of nearby Grand Haven in August 2013, little did they dream that the camera would ever be seen again. Fast forward to September 2015, when visitors from across the state chartered a fishing boat in Grand Haven. The group’s first catch was a sheephead, then fisherman Andre claimed a second fish. It took the bait and Andre reeled it in, but it slipped off the hook. What remained on the hook was a camera; it was a great surprise. The captain passed a radio message on to the other charter boats, and everyone joked about it. Curious, Andre opened the back of the Whitehall friends aboard Wind Dancer in camera to reveal two mussels and the memory card. He was anxious to see if August 2013 (from left) Ellie Hegedus, Mike there were photos on it and if he was going to be able to return it to the owner. Cook, Dave Hays, Sue Savoie and Deb Hays. He later put the card into his computer and saw that it contained 19 intact photos. In several of the pictures, a group of friends were enjoying themselves on a boat. There were a few shots of a docked pontoon boat. There was also a picture of a golf tee sign that had “Mike’s Family Pharmacy” written on it. Andre tracked down the pharmacy phone number and called it. Andre introduced himself to Mike the pharmacist and asked him if he had lost a camera. The pharmacist said he didn’t know what Andre was talking about. That evening, Mike told this strange story to his friends, David and Deb, over dinner. The couple looked at each other and Deb said, “Mike, don’t you remember the sailing charter we took out of Grand Haven in the summer of 2013?! When I was moving around the sailboat that day, the camera in my pocket somehow slipped out and plopped into Lake Michigan.” Mike remembered the whole story. After sitting on the bottom of Lake Michigan for two years, the camera was “caught” by a kind visitor who was curious enough to investigate the camera’s contents and locate who he thought was the owner. Mike, now armed with the other side of the story, called Andre to share the news. Andre emailed the downloaded photos to Deb, who verified that the photos were indeed theirs. What are the chances that this small camera would be hooked on a fishing line — two years after it slipped overboard? What are the chances that the contents would be unspoiled? What are the chances that one of the photos would contain a clue about one of the friends in the photo? What are the chances that Andre would keep the camera instead of tossing it? What if Mike hadn’t visited David and Deb the same day he received the call from Andre revealing the strange tale? Would he remember to mention the story later? Stranger things have happened. On November 10, 1975, the 728-foot lake freighter Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with all hands on Lake Superior. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of th the sinking, popular Great Lakes author and presenter Rochelle Pennington will share her special program “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” at a variety of Great Lakes locations. The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin, and the Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, hosted Pennington during the first week of November. (DCMM will have a special Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit on display from mid-December through March 2016.) Second Great Lakes Marine Sanctuary Proposed

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015

According to the National Marine Sanctuary, at the 2015 Our Ocean Conference in Valparaiso, Chile, President Barack Obama announced that, for the first time since 2000, two new marine areas have been identified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) for possible designation as national marine sanctuaries. In Wisconsin, an 875-square-mile area of Lake Michigan, with waters extending from Port Washington to Two Rivers, was identified for possible designation. The nominated area contains a collection of 39 known shipwrecks including the Rouse Simmons (pictured) and 15 of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Following this comment period, NOAA will develop a draft environmental impact statement, draft management plan and potential regulations for each site, which will then be available for public review. Volvo Penta: The Next Generation

Volvo Penta is known for its innovative boating products. Back in 1959, the company invented the sterndrive and in the following 56 years also introduced innovations such as the pod-like Inboard Performance System (IPS) and, more recently, its Forward Drive sterndrive. In August the company upped the innovation ante by introducing a new line of gasoline V8 power plants packed with advanced features that change the very nature of what folks expect from an inboard engine. Just like Volvo Penta’s existing V6 inboard models, the new 300- and 350-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engines are based on the General Motors Gen V platform. Among the advances are direct fuel injection (a ﬁrst in gasoline inboard engines), variable valve timing and all-aluminum blocks (the only gasoline inboards with them on the market). These new engines are 10 percent more fuel eﬃcient, as much as 31 percent quicker from zero to 30 mph, and far quieter than the models they replace. The new engines are already in production. They can be paired with Volvo Penta’s conventional sterndrive system, or its new Forward Drive, which features forward-facing Duoprops tucked under the stern. There’s more on the way, too. Winterizing 101 Prioritize your winterizing projects before storage.

always get a bout of depression at this time of the year, when the boat is taken out of the water but there are still a lot of things that need to be done. During these months, I determine what needs to be maintained on my boat before placing it in storage. Some projects I do myself, while other items on my list are left for the boat yard to take care of. The size and complexity of your boat will, to some extent, dictate what is required.

First and foremost Engines need to be winterized and the recommendations of the manufacturer should be followed to the letter. According to insurance companies, there are many claims for cracked engine blocks in the spring because owners did not pay enough heed to making sure their boat was prepared for the winter season. Engines should be properly serviced, including changing the oil and filters, so that they’re ready to go in the spring. Fuel tanks should be stored either completely full or completely empty. A half-full tank is liable to accumulate a significant amount of condensation, with fluctuations in temperatures degrading fuel — particularly a problem with ethanol.

Before the shrink wrap Most things you can take care of yourself, but projects like shrink wrapping are best left to the pros. Well before you get to the shrink wrapping stage, however, it’s a good idea to make a list of all the things that need to be attended to in the off-season. I have a lot of teak on my boat, so refinishing the brightwork is right up there near the top of my list. It helps to pass time and ensures the boat looks its best come spring. The off-season is also time to address any mechanical issues; if you’re going to be doing these types of projects yourself, make sure you’ve established a clear plan. Timing is everything; order any spare parts in good time so you can wrap up the project come spring. If you’re asking the yard to service your boat, tell them early in the decommissioning season and don’t wait until spring when they’ll be at their busiest. It’s also a good idea to take home anything that doesn’t need to stay on the boat over the winter. Cushions, bedding and upholstery will all benefit from being off the boat; it helps prevent mildew and mold from forming and makes cleaning the boat much easier. If your boat has carpet that can be removed, lay-up is a good time to remove these for storage and cleaning the boat.

Winterizing water systems Water systems should be winterized as well. Use non-toxic antifreeze; the stuff from the auto store may be cheaper but it’s toxic and unsuitable for potable water plumbing. While we are on the subject of water, ensure that the bilge of the boat is as dry as possible before putting the boat away for the winter. Remove transom or garboard plugs to allow any water (that does find its way into the bilge) an opportunity to drain away. On a large boat, it’s a good idea to pour a gallon or two of anti-freeze into the bilge so any water that does collect will not freeze. Wash the exterior of the boat and apply a coat of wax to help protect the finish throughout the winter. Finally, if you are shrink wrapping your boat, remember to include some vents in the cover; circulating air will keep the boat smelling fresh and discourage mold. Time spent now is never wasted and you’ll be on the water ahead of the crowd come spring. ★ “Finally, I would just like to mention that this is my ﬁnal column for Lakeland Boating. DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Pro-owned Pointers How to buy a better used boat. here’s a reason used boat sales outpace new purchases 10 to one. They represent a heck of a good value, particularly when factoring in perks like depreciation and owner outfitting. Everyone likes a bargain, but sometimes that deal of a lifetime can wind up costing you a bundle in repairs down the road. Here are a few tips to avoid the proverbial “hole in the water” while searching for that perfect used boat.

Engine issues Start by looking for obvious problems such as leaks, excessive rust and broken components. Check coolant level and properties (for closed systems). Low antifreeze levels should raise red flags about possible leaks, as should coolant with a rusty color or an unusual amount of solids. Next, check the oil. A slightly low oil level might be okay, but a higher than normal level could be a sign of trouble. This is especially problematic if the oil is milky or frothy (a sign of water or antifreeze contamination), which could indicate a blown gasket or a cracked block. Smell the oil; if it smells burnt, that could be a sign of overheating. Next, wipe the dipstick on a clean white cloth or napkin. Oil that’s thick initially but then starts to spread out over the cloth is an indication of fuel contamination. How difficult is the engine to start? Depending on the engine (gas or diesel) hard starting could be caused by a number of issues — weak batteries, faulty plugs, bad fuel pumps, etc. How does the engine sound? Rough running can be an indication of anything from clogged fuel filters to compression problems, while engines idling at more than 800 rpm may have been set high to mask idling problems. How’s the oil pressure and operating temperature? Low oil pressure could be due to anything from faulty oil pumps to cam bearing failure. High water temperatures may be something as simple as a bad impeller, but could also be caused by corroded manifolds or exhaust risers. Bottom line: Engines are a big-ticket item, so if problems are discovered, weigh the cost of repair or replacement verses simply moving on to the next boat.

Delaminated decks Water intrusion into the “cored” decking of fiberglass boats likely causes more damage every year than sinkings, groundings and fires combined. Most all decks and cabin tops are cored, typically with end grain balsa, plywood, or maybe one of the high-tech foam variations. The prime directive with cored construction is to keep water out. Wet wood coring can rot, allowing the cored deck to separate and drastically reduce

structural integrity. Long-term water exposure causes problems with foam-cored decks as well, including core separation, freeze damage and, in some cases, disintegration. The first step (literally) in finding deck problems can be as simple as walking on them. Soft spots, oil-canning (flexing) or even water squishing from deck fittings are all indicators of a potential and expensive repair. Drips and brownish stains below decks are also common signs of rotting core. Sound out the decks by gently tapping on them with a small, plastic-headed hammer or the end of a screwdriver handle. Sharp, crisp sounds while tapping are what you want, while dull thuds can be an indication of delamination. Moisture meters (such as those available from JR Overseas JROVERSEAS. COM) are also an excellent tool for sniffing out soggy decks. Bottom line: While repair costs will be directly related to the size of the delaminated area, the words “core replacement” and “cheap” are rarely used in the same sentence. If a deck flexes like the moonwalk you rented for Jr’s birthday party, run or get ready to hand out some serious cash.

Electrical system checkouts After years of additions, partial removals and overall abuse, no system harbors greater headache potential for the used boat buyer than electrical systems. For DC systems, start with the batteries. Each should be in a liquid-tight and acid-proof container or tray and secured against movement. Be on the lookout for equipment hot-wired directly to the battery (which could pose as a potential fire hazard), as well as “crowded post” syndrome, which means that more than four wires are connected to a single battery post. Wire runs should be neat, well organized and labeled. Problems you may encounter include unsupported wires, dead ends, corrosion and lack of chafe protection (especially where wires pass through a bulkhead). Keep an eye out for electrical tape joints and household twist-on connectors; those are two sure signs that Jethro’s been doing a little weekend electrical work. Both are prohibited as they will eventually fall off and leave exposed conductors. Verify AC wiring is marine-grade rather than residentialstyle solid strand (aka ROMEX) and that the outlets located in the galley, head, machinery spaces and weather decks are ground-fault circuit interrupt (GFCI) protected. Bottom line: If the electrical systems are “maxed out,” or rife with problems, play it safe by getting an estimate from a marine electrician to bring them into compliance before negotiating with the owner. ★

he celebrated British yacht builder threw out the rulebook when it created the innovative Sunseeker Predator 57. That fresh approach made this new yacht the fastest-selling model in Sunseeker’s history. So, of course, we couldn’t wait to take it for a spin. Built for fun

For all of its sophistication and refinement, the one key element that Sunseeker never lost sight of in designing the Predator 57 is that this is a boat built for fun. That’s clearly evident as you step onto the massive, hydraulically-operated rear swim platform — just touch one button and the entire structure can be submerged up to about 18 inches below the water surface. “You would normally lower the platform in order to launch or retrieve the tender that’s housed in the transom garage,” says Ron Montoya, of Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales, St. Clair Shores, MI (866-490-5297; JBYS.com). “But on a hot day you can put a lounge chair on it and stay cool in the water, or use it instead of a ladder to get in and out of the water when swimming.” Centered across the stern, a large, hydraulically-activated door lifts at the touch of a button to reveal a neatly concealed tender garage, which is spacious enough to accommodate a Williams 325 or other jet tender to around 10 feet in length. With the swim platform lowered, an electric winch makes launching or retrieving the tender quick and easy. Close the garage and you still have full use of the platform. “It’s really great,” says Montoya. “It’s so much easier and so much neater than having the tender mounted on a davit, where you lose the use of the swim platform when it’s stowed.” As you enter the aft salon, the large, upholstered sunpad that sprawls over the garage invites you to climb aboard, stretch out and work on your tan. It fronts onto a plush, wrap-around settee that stretches across the stern and forward up the port side of the boat. Sunseeker’s emphasis on having fun is apparent again in the aft cockpit, where entry is via a stairway at the starboard side of the swim platform. The settee surrounds a beautiful teak table with integral beverage holders, which can be flipped open to create an even larger table for lunch. Overhead, the hard top conceals a retractable panel that can be extended all the way back to the swim platform if needed, allowing any mix of sun or shade in this area. An attractive cabinet along the starboard side wall opens to reveal a fully equipped outdoor galley and refreshment center — complete with a BBQ grill, cool plate, sink with faucet, refrigerator and an icemaker.

Inside out

Heading forward, an innovative, sliding rear cockpit door speaks further to the Predator’s focus on fun. Slide the door open, press a button, and both door and portside rear glass disappear into the floor, turning the Predator 57 into a wide-open boat with a single, full-length salon with 360-degree views. Only a small step up into the main salon provides any hint of where the rear wall once stood. This feature is a first for Sunseeker, and it completely eliminates the need for owners to have to choose between an open or closed boat. “The ability to open the boat up is one of the design elements that really makes the Predator 57 stand out,” says Montoya. “On some yachts you step into the salon, or you step outside, and either way you leave half your party behind. Not so on this boat.” As if to further prove his point, Montoya took a few steps forward toward the helm, pressed another button, and smiled as the entire main salon ceiling began to retract. Almost the entire fiberglass hard top from the windshield back slowly disappeared rearward, bathing the main salon in sunshine. “To fully open the boat up like this used to require a fabric roof,” explains Montoya. “Sunseeker has developed the concept and taken it forward to the point you can now enjoy the same open-air experience with a hard top. With the large, continuous side windows, it’s just tremendous — there’s really nothing else like it.”

Built for drivers

The helm’s overall clean look is achieved through the widespread adoption of cutting-edge technologies, including automotive-inspired keyless ignition and a fully digital vessel monitoring system. A pair of large, side-by-side, multi-function touch-screen displays dominate the upper dash panel, while below a large chart table sits to the left of the exquisite, six-spoke chrome-on-black leather steering wheel. To its right, and positioned within perfect reach, our review boat featured a Volvo-Penta EVC twin control and joystick. The Predator 57 was designed from the outset to be built with either shafts or pod drives.

The driver and companion receive special attention, enjoying twin bucket sport seats that look and feel like they came straight out of a Bentley, with neat, double-diamond stitching and integrated, flip-up bolsters. The styling of the helm and positioning of the seats combine to provide outstanding visibility while underway, while a power-down window along the starboard side provides exceptional convenience when docking.

The great indoors

A few short steps ahead and down from the helm takes us to a bright and surprisingly spacious galley, with more counter space than some homes. Open above to let the light shine in, the galley is centered around a ceramic top four-burner range, which floats over a beautiful granite countertop. A vast amount of overhead storage makes maximum use of the space and allows for the preparation of even complex meals thanks to the galley’s thoughtful appointments and generous proportions. Opposite the galley to starboard, a comfortable breakfast salon provides more private dining quarters when you’re not yet ready to venture onto the main deck. Forward of the galley, on the port side, is the day head, complete with a lovely full-size countertop sink and a full stand-up shower. A pass-through doorway provides en-suite convenience to the VIP suite in the bow. The VIP suite is spacious enough and so beautifully appointed one might easily confuse it for the owner’s accommodations. The bright suite includes opening portholes set within its large windows — a unique and elegant touch that sets this boat apart. A second guest cabin, located just aft of the breakfast salon, accommodates twin Pullman bunks. This space can also be outfitted as storage, says Montoya, or used to accommodate a washer/dryer for owners who enjoy extended cruises and who don’t require the additional sleeping accommodations. The owner’s suite is positioned mid-cabin in the Predator 57, making the most of the yacht’s 15-foot beam. A wonderfully inviting seating area with a breakfast table to starboard of the queen bed is the ideal spot for that first coffee of the morning, inviting you to rise slowly and ease into the day. Large windows with opening inset portholes provide plenty of light and fresh air. The large en-suite offers a remarkable amount of space for storage and a full stand-up shower with its own porthole (tastefully frosted for modesty). While there’s no question that Sunseeker’s Predator 57 is a beautifully appointed yacht, I was itching to find out how it performed underway. I was not disappointed.

The strong, silent type

With a pair of Volvo-Penta IPS950s housed in its spacious engine room, the Predator 57 accelerates smoothly out of the hole and settles on plane without fuss or fanfare — exactly as a sport yacht should. With four of us aboard on a warm September morning, our Predator 57 (with a half tank of fuel and a half tank of water) cruised across Lake St. Clair’s calm surface effortlessly at 30 knots, with an indicated fuel burn of 46 gallons per hour. Montoya notes that with its speed and 250 nautical mile range, the Predator 57 is an ideal sport cruiser, able to reach any corner of the Great Lakes. Being well-acquainted with Volvo-Penta’s IPS system, the Predator 57’s smooth handling wasn’t really a surprise. But what was shocking was how quietly the boat ran — even at 30 mph with both the salon roof and rear cockpit closure wide open. The aggressively raked windshield does a superb job of keeping both wind and noise out of the boat, while Volvo’s IPS system is said to generate half the noise of traditional shaft drives. I would believe it; skating across Lake St. Clair at near full throttle, our conversation level remained at normal volumes. It was only when we moved from the helm to sit outside in the aft cockpit that Montoya and I really noticed the breeze or felt the need to speak up. That is quite extraordinary, even among luxury yachts designed first and foremost with comfort in mind. xperienced Great Lakes sailors said it was the worst storm in many years. The Ludington Chronicle noted, “It came up almost without warning and lashed the lake into a fury before small crafts had time to get to a safe harbor.” Up and down Lake Michigan’s shores, temperatures plummeted, the wind shrieked and whirling snow hit windowpanes like buckshot. Out on the lake, waves became mountains. It was November 23, 1912. At the Kewaunee Life Saving Station in Wisconsin, U.S. Coast Guard members spotted a schooner riding low in the water, her sails torn. She was clearly in trouble, flying her flag at half-mast. Within a matter of hours, the Rouse Simmons would lie in a watery grave off the shore of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, along with Capt. Herman Schuenemann, all her crew and 5,500 Christmas trees.

History of the Chicago Christmas Tree Ship During the holiday season in the early 1900’s, Chicago families eagerly awaited the delivery of Christmas trees aboard the three-masted schooner, Rouse Simmons, captained by Herman Schuenemann. On Friday, November 22, 1912, the Rouse Simmons departed Thompson, Michigan for its weeklong journey to Chicago, laden with close to 5,500 Christmas trees. On November 23, the ship was caught in a violent storm on Lake Michigan and capsized, tragically killing all on board. The legacy of the Chicago Christmas ship and its crew live on thanks to the passion and perseverance of the Schuenemann family. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard delivers trees to Chicago each holiday season to honor the memory of the Christmas Tree Ship and continue the tradition.

Three other ships sank during that storm, but they are largely lost to history. The story of the Rouse Simmons, or the “Christmas Tree Ship,” however, has endured for well over a century. “I’m in a long line of people who have fallen in love with this story in the last century, from singers to storytellers to poets,” says Michigan-based author Rochelle Pennington. “I fell in love with the people.” Pennington has written two books on the subject. “The Christmas Tree Ship: The Story of Captain Santa,” is an all-ages summary of the tale, while “The Historic Christmas Tree Ship: A True Story of Faith, Hope and Love,” expands her storytelling and includes more than 60 photographs and 140 year’s worth of citations from newspaper clippings. Now retired, the books are available second-hand. She also has presented Christmas Tree Ship programs throughout the Great Lakes and as far away as Texas and Arizona. She delights in sharing the little-known stories that put human faces on what has become a legend. “I was primarily interested in who the Schuenemanns were,” Pennington says. “That interest took me to the

family members — to Dr. William Ehling, the captain’s last surviving grandson, and to Barbara, the oldest great-granddaughter. I spend time with them each December.” Dr. Ehling remembered playing hide-and-seek among the trees his grandmother sold, and making trips to what he called “the great wooded north” with his mother, Pearl. Even after his grandfather was lost in 1912, his grandmother, Barbara, continued harvesting and selling trees. “Barbara Schuenemann really is a pillar of the story,” Pennington says. “She continued even after the lake took her husband, in a time when women didn’t even have the right to vote. She sold trees until she died in 1933, and her daughter carried on for a few years after that.”

Thanks to these intrepid women, the Schuenemann family’s legacy spanned multiple generations and roughly 60 years in Chicago and in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula communities of Thompson and Manistique, where Herman and his older brother August first harvested evergreen trees in the 1870s and ‘80s. “The ship, the captain and the crew were gone, but Barbara was still on deck, finding her way forward,” Pennington says. “The trees represented everlasting life, like an arrow pointing heavenward, and she said she was going to carry on.” Her words echoed those of her lost husband. BOATU.S.: AVOID THE BOAT INSURANCE BLUES

IF YO U H AV EN ’T taken a close look at your insurance policy, you could end up blindsided by clauses that exclude coverage for certain types of damage. 1. Consequential Damage Most insurers exclude losses from “wear, tear, and corrosion,” so they won’t pay for a failed stuffing box that sinks a boat. The most generous policies would cover your boat that just sank, plus the other losses likely to result from a failed part: fire, explosion, collision, dismasting and grounding or stranding. 2. Salvage In some insurance policies, the money to pay for salvage is deducted from what you get to fix the boat. The most generous policies provide separate salvage coverage up to the insured value of the boat, in addition to payments made for the boat and its equipment. 3. Wreck Removal Most people assume their insurance company will cover the cost of cleaning up what’s left after a catastrophe. But some insurance companies will give you a check for the insured value plus a percent of the insured value and walk away, leaving you to pay for and arrange the wreck removal. The most generous policies cover wreck removal out of the liability coverage and will pay up to the liability limit to clean up the mess.

4. Fuel-Spill Liability Some policies only pay the cost of cleaning up a fuel spill if it occurs due to a “covered loss.” If your sunken boat wasn’t covered because the stuﬃng box failed due to wear, tear and corrosion, then the resulting fuel spill wouldn’t be, either. Some policies pay fuel-spill liability out of the overall liability limit for the policy, and it is lumped together with other liability payments. The most generous policies separate out fuel-spill liability and provide coverage up to $854,000 — the maximum amount you can be held liable for under federal law. 5. Liability Injury settlements tend to be very expensive. If you’re already insured, it costs very little to increase your limits, so it’s worth checking how much liability coverage you have and comparing it to your auto and homeowner’s policies. The most comprehensive liability-only policies cover not just personal injury but also salvage, wreck removal and fuel-spill liability.

Our publisher joins NW Explorations on an unforgettable Alaskan journey through the inside passage.

laska is not an easy place to get to. Yet, once you arrive you will spend the rest of your days praising the area and planning your next trip back. I have been to Alaska twice now — both times as a guest of NW Explorations and its famed “Mother Goose Flotilla.” My first cruise was a three-week trip in 2010 that began at the company’s home base in Bellingham, Washington and ended in Ketchikan, Alaska. This time around, NW Explorations — a first-class charter service and brokerage firm — invited me on a weeklong journey from Juneau, Alaska, navigating through the Inside Passage and ending up at our destination of Ketchikan. Why Mother Goose? Alaska occupies a vast amount of space. You can start your engines and go for three days straight and never see or hear another human being. There are no stores or shops, no newspapers, magazines — just you, your travel companions and the breathtaking landscape. Smartphones will not get you very far. You can go days without being able to place a call, unless you have a satellite phone. If a lone or inexperienced boater got into trouble, the probability of finding someone to help would be very difficult. The “Mother Goose” flotilla concept was conceived to provide help when needed, 24 hours a day, with experienced people at the ready. My most recent trip consisted of four trawlers and one lead boat, the Deception — a 49-foot Grand Banks Trawler and the boat I spent my week on. Deception had a crew of three including Captain Rich Fitzpatrick, first mate Rowan Yerxa and naturalist Gregory Smart. Captain Rich, an Annapolis grad, is also a recently retired naval officer with 30 years of service. He commanded several Navy ships, including an 820-foot helicopter aircraft carrier, and also carries a 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard license. Rowan, the first mate and mechanic, also carries a 100-ton

By Bing O’Meara license. He is, in addition, a classically trained violinist who has been known to perform occasionally on the bridge after dinner. As if that were not enough, Rowan also performs surfboard exhibitions in water too cold for man or beast, while balancing on the 49-foot Grand Banks wake like a pro. Gregory Smart was also on board — a naturalist with an encyclopedic mind who can answer any and all questions without missing a beat. Smart is his last name and a most appropriate one.

Arctic Adventure NW Explorations charter fleet is in pristine condition. They have an in-house, 25-man staff that can handle any mechanical or electrical jog that comes their way. The boat you board when you arrive will be spotless, all mechanical systems checked out, as well as all electronics. The lead boat will have a mechanic on board to take care of any problems that may occur underway. When you are with a group of like-minded people friendships form quickly. To help facilitate social life aboard, there is a cocktail party the night prior to getting underway. Most nights were spent at anchor or rafting up — another great way to meet fellow cruisers. Whale sightings were common throughout our trip. They would not jump; they would “bubble,” most likely for sardines. Bubble net feeding is a technique where the whales dive deep and exhale in unison. As they surface with their mouths open, they exhale the water through the baleen and swallow their catch. This bubbling phenomenon is seen only here and one other place in the world. These whales have a unique lifestyle. They eat nonstop all summer off the coast of Alaska. Come fall, they migrate to the Hawaiian Islands where they spend the winter months mating and giving birth. They were a fantastic sight on our seven-day journey through the frozen, vast Alaskan landscape.

JULY 19: Chicago to Juneau I left Chicago on an early afternoon flight to Seattle/ Tacoma where I connected to Air Alaska for a two-hour flight to Juneau, Alaska. When I arrived, I took a cab to Statter Harbor/Auke Bay where I met up with Captain Rich. He gave me a tour of the 49-foot Deception that would serve as the lead boat for the cruise, “The Best of Glacial Alaska.” The cozy starboard stateroom would be mine for seven days.

JULY 20: Juneau to Tracy Arm Cove We left Auke Bay Marina, cruising down Stephens Passage for Tracy Arm Cove. It’s a distance of 56 miles and is also the gateway to the Inside Passage. Thanks to NW Explorations, I can now brag that I have completed the Inside Passage as well as the Outside Passage. The icebergs get more numerous as you approach the glaciers. The seals lie on their backs soaking up the sun and the bald eagles practice bomb runs with perpetual scowls on their faces. As we slowly moved through Holkham Bay, we had to keep our eyes wide open because the whole area is littered with icebergs. We spent two nights at Tracy Arm Cove — which is a popular spot, even with celebrities. On our first evening there, someone in our flotilla located Rush Limbaugh’s 150-foot yacht Rushmore, however we never spotted Rush. Later on, the boat next to us yelled over that there were two female kayakers pitching a tent about 30 yards off the beach. We were watching their progress and grew a bit concerned because we had noticed a pair of grizzly bears chasing one another on the other side of the cove. The kayakers noticed that the bears had closed in, but did not appear to have any interest in them. When the bears appeared next to the cooking equipment, the kayakers froze and did everything they were supposed to do. When the bears ducked into the woods, the women ran over to their two-person kayak and took off. Next thing we knew, the women had paddled around the island and were climbing aboard Deception. Once onboard, the kayakers — Keka and Joan, from Holland — calmed down, had a cup of tea and took up Captain Rich’s invitation to borrow his stateroom for the night.

3 JULY 21: Tracy Arm Cove In the morning, our Dutch guests and a few of our crewmembers took the dinghy to the island. The ladies packed up their camping gear and food in the kayak and off they went searching for their next adventure. As you slowly cruise into the Inside Passage, another masterpiece created by Mother Nature unfolds. We glided by a soaring granite mountain that rose up 2,500 to 3,000 feet. When we were 25 feet from the mountainside, our depth sounder read 2,500 feet deep in the fjord. These mountains (or walls) are not occasional peaks; they are continuous bare walls with almost no foliage. As we proceeded, we came to our first glacier, South Sawyer Glacier. These glaciers are an incredible 10 million years old. It looked like a frozen river about 200 feet wide by 50 feet high, jammed packed between two mountains. When a huge chunk (and by huge, I mean 20 tons) drops off, also known as “calving,” it produces the sound of 20 tons of rock falling into 800-foot deep water. As the “bergs” become exposed to oxygen, they turn a magnificent color of blue. And the bergs that have melted down to a pound or so look like expensive jewelry. We also encountered magnificent waterfalls, fed by rainwater and melting snow. In the spirit of adventure, we nosed the bow pulpit under a freezing waterfall, where Captain Rich and a few other brave souls decided it was the perfect time to rinse off. From the glaciers, we headed back to an island to raft up in an ideal cove off a nice beach, enjoy a warm dinner and hit the sack. JULY 22: Petersburg Greg spotted a group of orcas off the port side before we even left the bay. There were no fewer than eight whales swimming in small groups. We turned back towards the open water of Stephens Passage and rounded Point Astley where we saw our first humpbacks of the day and even a killer whale (with baby in tow — a rare sight)! We passed by the Five Finger Light (the first manned lighthouse in Alaska), and as we neared Petersburg whales swam in all directions. Once in Petersburg, I met the owner of the best looking boat in town, a brand-new Kadey-Krogen. The rest of the night was spent exploring the Scandinavian main street downtown.

JULY 23: Wrangell We pushed off from Petersburg and headed through the Wrangell Narrows towards Wrangell. Tlingit people and their ancestors have inhabited this island for thousands of years. Having been Tlingit territory and then under the jurisdiction of Russia, Great Britain and the U.S., Wrangell has the unique status as the only Alaskan city to have been goverened under four “flags.” The afternoon was spent at the Anan Wildlife Observatory. The observatory consists of a covered viewing shelter, several decks and a photo blind. Beginning in July, Anan Creek hosts a major run of pink salmon. By the end of the month, the creek is generally alive with thousands of fish. This is a favorite spot to view brown and black bears feasting on the salmon. JULY 24: Berg Bay Berg Bay is home to the world famous black bear that recently ate a resident’s kayak (search the news if you don’t know what I’m talking about). The bay is a half-mile long, but only 150 yards at its widest point. We rafted our boats together and relaxed for a nice, lazy day. The night ended with a outstanding violin performance by Rowan as the sunset settled over the water. JULY 25: Meyers Chuck On yet another calm day, the flotilla spread out over Blake Passage, while Rowan took an icy swim and spent the morning surfing the wake of Deception — a feat I dared not try. We cruised southwest, stopping along the coast of Easterly Island to watch sea lions, where we ended at the protected bay of Meyers Chuck. This neat fishing village is reminiscent of one in coastal Maine. We ended the night with a tasty potluck, complete with chicken curry and fresh crab. JULY 26: Ketchikan The islands’ famous resident Cassy — one of the few full-time residents on Meyers Island and also the town’s postmistress, seamstress and manager of the art gallery — bakes cinnamon rolls that are delicious. She was kind enough to motor her dinghy over to our flotilla and

hand-deliver some freshly baked rolls before we headed out on the last leg of our trip. Our last stop on the map was Ketchikan — a town that gets 15 feet of rain annually, beating out “Rain City” (Seattle) by a long shot. On our way over, we passed by seaplanes taking off as we savored our last moments in this frozen paradise.

Adventure of a Lifetime The “Best of Glacial Alaska,” was right up my alley. I love to cruise to new places with like-minded people and enjoy spectacular scenery and wildlife. If a trip like this is not on your bucket list it should be; there is nothing that compares. I have met people on these two trips who have boated in every part of the world and people who have just started boating. At the end of each trip, everyone is more knowledgable. A special thanks to Shakeel and Joanie on Telita for the excellent last supper at the top of the hill. For those of you who have been dreaming of an Alaskan cruise, this is the way to go. ★

Operation Summaries Learning lessons the hard way. Three Rescued from Lake Superior 1 Sault Ste. Marine, Michigan — August 19, 2015 Just before 6 p.m., the crew from Coast Guard Station Marquette received notification from Marquette County Central Dispatch of a capsized sailing vessel located approximately 200 yards outside the breakwall of Marquette’s lower harbor. The boat crew launched aboard a 25-foot response boat, arrived on scene within minutes and recovered the three adults from the 65-degree Lake Superior water. Two of the individuals were wearing life jackets. There were no reports of any injuries or pollution. The 20-foot capsized sailboat was recovered by good Samaritans in another sailing vessel and then brought back into the harbor. The Coast Guard reminds boaters to be aware of the weather conditions before venturing out onto the water, and to wear your life jacket at all times. “We can’t stress enough the importance of wearing a life jacket at all times while you’re underway. It’s extremely difficult to put a life jacket on once you’re in the water,” says petty officer 3rd class Henry Wilson, a member of the responding rescue crew and the coxswain on the boat. Passengers Rescued from Flooded Sailboat

Alpena, Michigan — August 26, 2015 Shortly after 9 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received a call from two men aboard a 42-foot sailboat stating their vessel was taking on water approximately 18 nautical miles east of Alpena in Lake Huron. The men stated they were currently using a hand pump to dewater the vessel. Sector Sault dispatched a crew from Coast Guard Station Alpena aboard a 25-foot response boat, a crew from Coast Guard Station St. Ignace, Michigan aboard a 45-foot response boat and a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan aboard a Dolphin helicopter. They also issued an urgent marine information broadcast advising mariners in the area of the situation. The motor vessel Michipicoten, a Canadian flagged 689foot bulk carrier and a 45-foot pleasure craft responded to the broadcast along with the Alpena Sheriff’s Department. The Michipicoten provided a lee for the sailboat. Just after 11 a.m., the Traverse City aircrew arrived on scene and lowered a rescue swimmer and a dewatering pump to the vessel. was made aware that one of the men had a history of heart problems and was beginning to experience chest pains. Not long after, the man started to lose consciousness. Three Rescued from Sinking 3 Fishing Vessel Morgan City, Louisiana — August 31, 2015 The Coast Guard rescued three individuals from a 75-foot fishing vessel that sank approximately 12 miles southwest of Point Au Fer in the Gulf of Mexico. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders were notified by a passing helicopter of a sinking fishing vessel with two life rafts in the water. Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City 29-foot response boat crew and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans. The survivors were located in a life raft after they fired off a flare. The Morgan City boat crew safely transferred all three people aboard the life raft to their small boat and brought them back to Morgan City. The cause of the incident is being investigated. Good Samaritans Rescue Four from 4 Burning Boat Houston, Texas — September 19, 2015 Good Samaritans rescued four people aboard a boat when they saw it on fire at about 6:30 p.m. near the south jetty off Galveston. The good Samaritans called Sector Houston-Galveston on VHF-FM channel 16 to report that they saw the boat on fire. Watchstanders launched two Station Galveston boat crews, who arrived on scene around 6:45 p.m. and assisted in transporting the four back to Station Galveston. “It’s good that we had a quick response and we were able to save four people,” says seaman Jason Hall, one of the boat crewmen from Station Galveston. “It’s also nice to see that there are good people that are willing to help.” One of Station Galveston’s boat crews stayed on scene with the burning boat until it burned to the waterline and sank out of the navigation channel.
