The Great Lakes: So Much to Celebrate T

his month we celebrate Vermilion, Ohio, on the south shore of Lake Erie (p. 34). The city has earned the title of “The Largest Small Boat Harbor on the Great Lakes.” This picturesque community with New England-style charm is a popular cruising destination, with protected marinas and a wealth of attractions year round. Bill Summers (pictured at right) retired to Vermilion in the 1980s. By all accounts, folks in Vermilion are delighted he did. Most people we talked to echoed Mike and Tom Moes’ sentiments: “We’re lucky to have him. We’re glad he decided to move here.” For a number of years, Bill was the weatherman at the Woollybear Festival, the largest festival in the State of Ohio. He went by the nickname “Good News Summers” in those days. Incidentally, the Woollybear Festival takes place in October. Folklore has it Bill Summers that a winter’s severity can be predicted by the amount of black on a Woollybear most popular models, the 42, with Jefferson caterpillar.
