nderstanding customers’ needs keeps the innovative minds at Hobie Cat developing advanced products, hence its most recent introduction: The completely revamped Hobie Cat Mirage Sport Kayak. When looking for a multi-use watercraft, this kayak should absolutely make the short list. First off, it’s a stable platform, thanks to the tri-hull design that increases floatation at the edges of the beam. The rotomolded polyethylene hull is stiffened with structural ribs that run the hull’s length. Second, there’s something here for everyone. As a touring boat, handling is easy. To simplify the process, Hobie developed the exclusive MirageDrive pedal propulsion system. When pedaled, the kayak’s underwater fins act like penguin flippers, giving the craft forward motion. This also keeps hands free for other things, like bird watching, photography or grabbing a bite. Hobie has included some serious fishing capabilities on board the Mirage Sport Kayak. Standard features include two rod holders and the Lowrance Ready System, which boasts

Hobie Cat Mirage Sport Kayak a built-in transducer mount and pre-installed wiring cable plugs. With this kayak, Hobie kept the most die-hard anglers top of mind, as evidenced by optional equipment that includes a fishfinder and tuned hull to prevent water slap. “Hobie’s Mirage Sport is lightweight and maneuverable, with unmatched stability and power for a 9-foot kayak,” says Keeton Eoff, of Hobie’s strategic development team. “Its improved ergonomics make it fantastic for fishing or fun.” If sailing is your passion, there’s an optional Mirage sail kit where the mast steps onto a deck-mounted fitting. Need storage for edible goodies or gear? Make use of the forward bow hatch, covered and secured with bungee cords, and the midship 8-inch, twist-and-seal hatch to keep items secure. A rear cargo area with bungee tie-downs allows for additional gear stowage. For additional control there’s the twist-and-stow rudder system that retracts and engages with the pull of a T-shaped handle. Or, grab the two-piece paddle to navigate. It certainly adds to a robust upper-body workout routine. Hobie Cat’s latest entry into the kayaking world, the Mirage Sport Kayak, is yet another innovative feather in the company’s cap. Take one out and see for yourself. LB
