Acrylic Painting

Paint the subject matter of your choice in guided painting lessons with individual attention, critiques & demos.Imagery will be developed with acrylic paint on canvas based on an image of your choosing. Incorporate colour mixing, washes and glazing techniques to develop your imagery into a successful composition. Colour theory and rules of composition will be introduced to achieve perspective, visual depth and interpretations of light and shadow.

LEISURE Natural Soap Making

Sharpening

Getting back to basics and natural ingredients is not just a trend but a lifestyle. Not only should you know and care what you put into your body, but also what you put onto it. Soap making involves an exact combination of oils (coconut, palm & olive) blended with lye, producing a beautiful natural soap without unnecessary ingredients. This two- evening course will teach you everything you need to know to make your own luxurious soap creations using the Cold Process method. Proper handling of lye and all the safety precautions are covered. While the soap making portion is a demonstration, participants will partner up and customize their bars with provided scents, botanicals and extras.On the second night we cut the soap into bars and you learn about curing, handling and packaging for gift ideas.All supplies included. This course is designed for cooks, hunters, woodworkers and anyone who wants a REALLY sharp knife or wood working tool. During this hands-on session everyone will make a knife or chisel truly razor sharp. Participants need to bring at least one knife to practice on (Note: this knife should NOT be long and flexible), and can also bring other items for sharpening along with any sharpening equipment that you have or may want to learn to use (saws will not be covered.) Learn to Carve Treen Ages 13-Adult

Learn to carve Treen - make functional and artistic wooden spoons and ladles out of wet birch. These make useful items for the kitchen and wonderful and much appreciated gifts. Some carvers make nothing but spoons. It is fun, and kind of addicting. With just a few tools, and easily obtained material, this ancient craft will become a favorite activity around the campfire or on the porch. Rick Wiebe has been carving and selling spoons for many years and has infected a lot of people young and old with the spoon carving "bug".

Learn how to safely use a pocketknife to produce simply whittled projects out of commonly available materials. Over the three classes, students will make a decorative and useful wooden pen, rubber band shooter (environmentally sensitive insect control system), boomerang, a sturdy and functional walking stick and learn how to sharpen. LEISURE Survive Outside

Paddle Smart

Ages 12 to adult

Augment your basic outdoor survival knowledge by taking the “Survive Outside – A Guide to Outdoor Safety and the Code of Responsibility” program offered by AdventureSmart.

This presentation is designed for youth and adults who want to paddle, whether it is using stand-up paddleboards, kayaks or canoes. Topics include trip planning, training and taking the essentials for water based activities. This is a FREE program but registration is required as space is limited.

This brief presenter-led classroom program is targeted toward novice outdoor enthusiasts, youth groups, and everyone– young and old - interested in learning introductory outdoor survival practices from highly-experienced SAR volunteers and AdventureSmart team members. You will learn about SAR in your region; the Code of Responsibility, including 10 Essentials, Trip Plan, Do’s & Don’ts; and Outdoor Travel Tips. Our seasoned, knowledgeable instructors help you tie everything together with scenarios and analyses of real-life SAR experiences. This is a FREE program, but registration is required as space is limited.

FoodSAFE Level 1 A training program for volunteers, students, workers, supervisors and operators. Having a FOODSAFE certificate is a plus when job searching. As per the Food Premises Regulation, every operator of a food service establishment, or one employee per shift, is required to have a FOODSAFE certificate.The LEVEL 1 course emphasizes the top ten improper practices that cause foodborne illness plus the top six job hazards in food preparation and serving. A core program under the AdventureSmart banner, Hug-a-Tree and Survive teaches children invaluable outdoor survival lessons. This is a FREE program, but registration is required as space is limited.

This interactive course includes the business of babysitting, basic child care, nutrition, basic first aid, the developmental and behavior characteristics of children. Includes certificate and manual.

This is an RCMP search and rescue initiative that helps lost children survive in the woods. This proactive, preventative program originated in San Diego, CA, after a nine-year-old boy became lost and tragically died in the wilderness.

History of Lake Country

We'll use a pasta maker to make this fresh pasta and also learn how to make an amazing ragu. To go with the pasta dish, we will make Panzanella, a salad of bread, tomatoes and other delicious ingredients.

This presentation by the Lake Country Museum & Archives will take you on a visual tour of Lake Country, from the earliest days of the Okanagan Syilx people’s traditional fishing sites and summer villages, to the first ranchers and settlers, the VernonOkanagan Mission Stagecoach Road, lake transportation and the sternwheelers, the orchard industry and early packinghouses, and the abandoned settlement and gold mines of Fir Valley. The presentation includes historic archival photographs and museum artifacts. This is a free program but registration is required. Early History – BC Interior

Discover the early history of the Interior of BC. Five different sessions will cover topics ranging from the fur traders’ role in First Nations (Indian) society, the assertion of colonial authority, the role of missionaries, the theft of Indian land, and early cattle ranching activities. LEISURE It’s a Dog’s Life Traditional obedience doesn’t need to feel like a chore, Antler Creek K9 is here to make this experience successful for you and your dog. Depending on where you and your dog are at, choose from two levels of training, basic or advanced. First night is for people only and is mandatory; everyone in the family is welcome to attend. The remaining 5 nights you will bring your dog on a leash to have hands-on training. Open to any age of dog.

Life Skills Advanced

For those dogs and handlers who have a little training and want to improve and learn a little more. Dogs should know basic commands such as sit, down, and be good with other dogs. Class is open to suggestions from participants.

Pre-requisites: basic obedience skills which include: dog to be able to sit and go down and hold the position and be able to walk politely with handler on leash. Dogs should be at least 9 months old and handlers 16 years.

This course will help develop skills necessary for more advanced work. Emphasis will be in practicing techniques with the use of some basic agility equipment (tunnels, jumps and table). The CKC Canine Good Neighbour program is fun, useful and rewards responsible and caring owners and their great canine partners. This 6 week class focuses on the skills needed which will allow the dog to conduct themselves in a manner which is reliable and trustworthy in everyday living, be it around people, at home, in public or in the presence of other dogs. Dogs should know the basic such as sit, down and stay, be good with people and other dogs. Options for taking the test will be covered in class.

Restorative Yoga

Instructor: Eva Hartmann

Assisted by the use of props, restorative yoga sends the body into a deep state of relaxation. Poses are held for a longer periods of time, allowing tension to release on both physical and mental levels, assisting with deep healing. This class is suitable for all levels and requires no prior yoga experience. Expect to come away from this class with a deep sense of calm and a smile on your face. Loose comfortable clothing is recommended, please bring a yoga mat.

In Vinyasa Flow we synchronize movement and breath to create a flowing and meditative experience for the body and mind. Attention is given to posture and alignment as well as to transitions between poses. This is an energizing and invigorating practice and a wonderful way to begin your day. All levels welcome. Loose comfortable clothing is recommended, please bring a yoga mat.

Why decide between yoga and fitness if you can do both in the same class? Eva incorporates standing yoga poses with props such as elastic bands to create strengthening exercises. In between every pose you will unwind in a sun salutation. The second part of class focuses on holding grounding yoga poses as well as a short meditation. In Meditative Flow Yoga we begin our practice with a seated breath meditation and a gentle warm-up. We then flow through one or two waves of postures incorporated into sun salutations, before settling back onto the ground and holding poses for a good stretch and topped off with a short meditation and/or massage. At the end of our practice, we feel relaxed and strong, centred and energized. If you are looking for a well-balanced class instructed by a light-hearted teacher come and play! This class is suitable for students who are able to participate in a few rounds of sun salutations as well as balancing postures.

This class is for all levels as it will introduce basic poses (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayamas) with a focus on alignment. More experienced students who want to slow down and get into deeper aspects of their practice are welcome as well. A guided meditation and a neck massage round up this class. Taste of Dance Level 1

A great opportunity to learn all about your bike and how to get more from your ride. Gain the confidence to get started or discover new adventures with your bike. A number of categories of bikes will be covered: Road, Mountain, Commuter and Comfort.

It's time to enjoy that couples dance instead of dreading the drag up to the dance floor. Designed for beginners with a fun atmosphere while discovering that anyone can master the moves. This series of classes are designed to start the learning process of 4 to 5 dances, just enough so you can show off a little. Waltz, Jive, Fox Trot, Cha Cha and Disco Waltz will be taught to different types of music, giving you the confidence to dance at a night club, wedding or even a country bar. No partner no problem! A different focus each week, bringing it all together on a ride. 1st Night - Getting the Basics – The basics of bikes and riding equipment with emphasis placed on proper bike fit and how to make your bike more comfortable for your style of riding. 2nd Night - Hands on Experience - How to change a tire & tube, repair a chain, and keep your bike in good running order. SWIMMING LESSONS In Partnership with YMCA - Drown Proofing the Okanagan. YMCAs have been teaching people to swim for more than a century. In YMCA aquatics programs, children learn to be safe around water and they feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with learning something new. Youth progressive swimming uses a problem-solving, guided-discovery teaching approach in a positive, caring environment. Kids can develop lifelong skills that can help them stay healthy. Accessing the YMCA swim programs in our community is a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn the life skill of swimming right here in our lakes where they spend their summers. Lake Country Alliance Church is pleased to offer an introductory theatre-training program for kids! This pre-teen summer day camp will help participants gain a foundation in acting and playmaking through a series of engaging games and exercises. Students will explore the care and use of their voices and bodies for theatrical application, acting technique, and improvisational skills. The intensive will culminate in a play on the final evening that the students have created themselves! A fun filled camp is waiting to capture your child’s imagination through amazing experiments and demonstrations covering all areas of science. Endless opportunities to discover the world around them with hands on activities in biology, chemistry, ecology and physics. This camp runs 1½ hours each day and is designed to give every child an opportunity to participate and discover what a great game soccer can be. Maximum participation through fun games & activities will help children learn the basic skills of kicking, dribbling & passing. Our camp focuses on improving campers’ fundamental physical skills like balance and coordination, while finding their style on their board. Our staff of instructors are seasoned skateboarders and scooter riders with experience teaching skateboarding in a safe, fun way. Here, campers are given time to master tricks and challenge themselves to learn and develop. Our coaches are on hand every step of the way to help correct flaws and accelerate learning. Campers also participate in traditional camp programming and other sports daily, so they get a well-rounded summer experience. 2018 SPRING / SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE The Okanagan Boys & Girls Clubs has been a leading provider of programs to children, youth and families since 1959. Our programs and services support the healthy physical, educational and social development every day for over 1,300 young people and families in 41 clubs and service locations throughout the Okanagan valley. We help young people grow healthy, happy and safely from birth to adulthood, and are a resource and support for parents throughout their family’s involvement with us. Visit us to find out why the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs is “a good place to be!” Our Members are important! We value our members and strive to promote a sense of belonging within our Clubs. A $10* membership is required at the time of registration and is valid for 12 months. This entitles members to register for all programs, attend drop-in programs, and participate in special events. Membership is valid at all Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs locations. *No one is ever refused membership due to the inability to pay. Subsidies and payment plans are available. Our centre provides a safe and supportive place where every child is listened to, treated with respect and valued in an environment of inclusion and acceptance. Our daily program is filled with educational theme based activities, while offering small and large group activities; child directed art, music, structured circle time, indoor and outdoor play. We work closely alongside the Lake Country Library to encourage a positive attitude towards early literacy and attend the libraries Story Time as part of our regular programming. It’s time to use our imaginations and creative thinking skills. Let’s discover, explore and create something new through art, games and adventure.

Week 7: To Infinity and Beyond

It’s a space odyssey. Let’s explore the wonders of the universe! There will be planets, stars, aliens and rocket ships galore.

Week 8: Blast from the Past

Travel back in time and explore the fun from previous decades from the days of the Wild West to the hippie and disco era.

Week 9: Holding on To Summer

Just one more week left of summer and there are more things to do. As summer slows down, club doesn’t! Enjoy these final days of summer with us playing all your favorite games and activities. We are going to spend more time out in the sun and create more art projects.
