NYEHAUS is pleased to present LA INVASION, a group show featuring the work of Peter Alexander, Judy Chicago and Laddie John Dill on view at Jürg Judin’s Gas Station in Berlin, Germany. The perma grey skies, the majestic Mies van der Rohe buildings peppering Berlin’s bullet riddled landscape, punctuations of warm colored lights of recent shopping centers, and neon red framing the pasty sun-deprived skins of the ladies of the night, seem an inhospitable landscape to accentuate the work of three Californian Minimalists; Peter Alexander, Judy Chicago and Laddie John Dill.
Not so.
These Tropical Minimalists armed with lickable
resins dripping down the wall, fierce pastel colored light blasts, and neon and sand topographies emulating the California sandscape, descend into Berlin’s apocalyptic metropolis like stealth paratroopers making a feathery soft landing. Housed in a stunning architectural monument, a renovated 1950s gas station and additionally a battalion of their brethren (and sisters) bunkered in the Martin Gropius Bau for the Getty Museum’s Pacific Standard Time Exhibit, Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, 1950 – 1970, make for a powerful frontal assault on a city that has been largely deprived of their mystical presence… Until now.

Like staring at a solar eclipse,
Peter Alexander’s plastic fields of translucent color burn the retina. Poured, tinted resin is detonated by light, bringing to mind molten pink lava, suddenly cooled and frozen in time. Drops of pigment are measured precisely by the Alchemist.
The curing
process, however, has a life of its own: a drop in temperature, too much moisture in the Pacific air or the sense of post-coital elation are powerful agents, subverting precision.
Each work is as different

She is David to the
Goliaths that comprised the (pea) cocked male brotherhood of Southern California art of the 60s and early 70s.
The precision of her sling-
shot produced a body of work that infuriated her contemporaries and pierced their meditations on color and space. Her target fell significantly south of the skull. Now her slingshot is turned away from her Californian rivals and a unified front will seduce the European art community that has largely turned their backs. Positioned upright like a shield, Chicago’s “come back with your shield or on it,” approach to the world is particularly poignant in the sleek, white hood of the Chevy Corvair used as the canvas for a series of 4 paintings tattooed with iconography that is a veritable potpourri of sexual orifices, phalluses, and cells that bond the two, with a palette of blazing pastels that would become Chicago’s signature. Engaged in the push and pull of artistic identity, Chicago scoops the toxic ice cream pink plumes of southern California light, encasing them in clear acrylic lacquer, infused with an emotion that chilly Minimalism has rarely conveyed, her feminism sublimated but ever present. The white sheet acrylic backing reflecting light back at the viewer, passing through her kaleidoscope of color gathering intensity in the process, pastel pigments super charged, retinas pin from the opiates they release. The drawings, which are done as preparation for each painting, are an intricate exploration of form, color and composition. Rendered as topographical maps of color, grids of evaporating hue challenge their neighbors for harmony or intentional discord, at once transporting symphonies and punk rock cacophony. Judy Chicago.

LADDIE JOHN DILL Laddie John Dill (LJD) is a central figure in the group of artists known as Light and Space, albeit a few years younger. Within the context of Southern California in the late 1960s, Dill quickly pushed his way into the conversation of how to evoke the regions unique landscape, a collision of natural and architectural beauty, and industrial toxic waste.
LJD’s work from the late 60s and early 70s began with unadorned colored argon tubing welded together in repeating patterns of color, and floor paintings, a combination of sand, glass and fluorescent lighting installations. The light sentences, as LJD would later refer to them, were experiments in alchemy: wielding the presence and absence of mercury, uranium and helium as a wizard waves his wand. The ambience of the light was carefully controlled to keep the work contained in its immediate footprint that was a fundamental difference with his East Coast fluorescent saber brandishing counterpart. While Flavin’s work flaunted fixtures almost as ready-mades, using the radiating environmental power of fluorescence to create much more environmental work, Dill’s Light Sentences were softer and more nuanced, achieving mathematical melodic rhythms that captured transitions of color within welded sections. The light, glass, and fluorescent tube work that followed the argon works flicker between the evocative and the actual. The intrinsically sublime properties of sand and its chemically altered form, glass, simultaneously strip away conceptual associations to nature and re-affirm them as artistic medium. At the same time, the drifts of sand quite literally create landscapes fading into the distance. LJD uses these materials as if sunlight were harnessed in his arsenal of tools. Often Argon tubing would be buried under the sand with sheets of glass inserted until it contacted the tubing; the effect being a conduit of light traveling to the edges of the glass. The impact of the ethereality of sand in contrast to the permanent density of glass gives the work a life force, and the installations subtly and unpredictably undulate over the course of the exhibition. The conscious embracing of chance and brittle materials conjure Duchamp’s Large Glass (1915-1923). In the case of Dill, the exposed bachelors reveal their machinery and vulnerability as these elemental installations dance to their disrobing.
