WHAT’S INSIDE

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

W

elcome Wildcats!

It’s hard to believe that the Fall 2013 Employer Showcase is already upon us! Months of preparation and collaboration with the College of Engineering and the Graham Office of Career Management in the Gatton College of Business & Economics have paved the way for a successful two-day Employer Showcase. We are excited this fall to be partnering with the Kernel Newspaper in providing the Employer Showcase Career Guide to all UK students as well as the entire campus community. This Career Guide highlights our Premier Employers and other Showcase participants. It will be a useful tool for career planning and development well after the event is over.

As we fulfill our mission to prepare students to successfully connect with employers and post graduate educational opportunities, The Stuckert Career Center’s website, www.uky.edu/careercenter, details career programs and workshops throughout the semester and continuing services offered to our student community. These activities are offered to meet our ultimate goal of connecting students with employment and graduate school opportunities. The Stuckert Career Center is staffed with highly trained and helpful career professionals whose focus is to guide you in reaching your career goals. We ask that you, the student, become proactive in utilizing our services by immediately registering on Wildcat CareerLink, which can be found at the site mentioned above. Here, in addition to our programs, you can learn about employers, see their schedules for Campus Interviews and Employer Information Sessions, find internship opportunities, and become familiar with online job search tools such as InterviewStream, Vault®, and Career Shift®. Once you experience the ease of using these resources and experience firsthand the guidance, concern, and care of our staff, you will more fully understand how much we care about your present and future career journey.

INTERVIEWING 101:

ART OF SELF-PROMOTION REQUIRES STRATEGY By Theresa Mickelwait

H

ave you ever heard people bragging about their latest accomplishments and thought, Boy, I hope I never sound like them. How about in a job search? Do you feel uncomfortable talking about yourself and your accomplishments during an interview? Many people have difficulty selling themselves to potential employers for a variety of reasons — they lack selfconfidence; they don’t want to sound pushy, conceited, or artificial; or they simply don’t enjoy being in the spotlight. Often, this reluctance stems from cultural norms or role models who taught us, “If I work hard, my performance will speak for itself.” In reality, self-promotion is a necessary skill for your career, not only to land a job but to maintain a good image with your boss and organization. Decisions about employment and promotions are based largely on human perceptions, so first impressions and visibility really do matter — it’s just human nature. Deliberate effort and practice might be necessary to overcome your hesitation and learn the art of authentic self-promotion. Here are some recommended strategies to develop your skills in self-promotion and advance your career: Focus on giving rather than getting: One of the most common hindrances to self-promotion that many people face is the perception that they have to be good at the hard sell, according to Charlie Mitchell, founder and director of Creating Space for You. Mitchell advocates the Go Giver approach from Bob Burg’s, The Go-Giver, which focuses on providing value to all you meet: what you can give rather than get. (It’s) refreshing, fun and reassuring for those of us who find we can be successful without having to turn into a pushy salesperson. Build relationships: There is nothing people love to talk about more than their own interests and passions. Likewise, there is nothing that turns people off more than someone who won’t stop talking about his or hers. Appropriate timing is crucial for artful self-promotion. Listen to others to find out what interests them and how you can help them. This builds your relationship, and they will often reciprocate. Remove yourself from the equation: Diane Kohler, director of human resources career development at the University of Kentucky and a private-practice career coach, asks her clients to think about yourself on your best day at work. What would your boss or co-worker say about you? Taking this third-person approach sometimes helps people

recognize their accomplishments and really take credit for them. You can also solicit feedback and recommendations from superiors, colleagues and clients. It gives a boost to your selfconfidence and offers concrete ammunition for your job search. Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes: One misconception about interviewers is that they can’t wait to eliminate you from the running. On the contrary, their main goal during interviews is to find the right candidate, and they hope the next person who walks in will be the one. Benny A. Benjamin, a psychologist who has worked in employment services for 32 years, advises his clients that they’re really doing their interviewer a favor if they offer concrete evidence why they are the candidate of choice. Many interviewers may have a hunch that they are speaking with the winning candidate, but they still have to justify

PRACTICE INTERVIEW DAYS Sign up for a 30 minute interview with employers via Wildcat CareerLink by September 27th. www.uky.edu/careercenter

DATES

October 1st & 2nd 9:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m. their choice to their superiors, Benjamin said. Take stock of your shining moments: When I am coaching clients on preparing for the interview process, I often talk about creating a list of stories and examples of their shining moments and greatest accomplishments. You want to collect a variety of examples that demonstrate the most desirable skills, such as communication, leadership and teamwork, and the unique qualities that separate you from others. Peggy Klaus, author of Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without Blowing It, recommends keeping a list of

Career Guide | Fall 2013 | 4

your best accomplishments and updating it regularly. In her book, she provides a series of questions to help you get started. Giving examples, especially if you specifically outline the actions you took and the positive results, gives substance and credibility to your assertions so you don’t just sound full of hot air. As you can see, good self-promotion is a balancing act between touting your achievements and maintaining integrity of character and awareness of social cues. It takes practice and sometimes honest feedback from others and/or access to the online interviewing software available through the Stuckert Career Center. Here are a few parting interviewing tips as you prepare for future interviews: • The interview is your opportunity to shine! Be confident and put your best foot forward. • Be prepared to share related experiences, skills, and accomplishments. • Offer detailed and specific examples that demonstrate your fit for the position. • Dress to impress (most industries prefer business suits). • Know the industry standards and company history. • Remember that regardless of how much experience you have, what your GPA is, who you know, or how great your resume appears, if you are not able to interview successfully, you will not get the job. Your resume gets you to the interview, and your interview gets you the job.

Practice interviews anytime, anywhere via webcam. UK Students have access to the original provider of pre-recorded and live video interviewing solutions in the world. All you need to do is to register with the James W. Stuckert Career Center’s Wildcat CareerLink to access this resource for free! TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CAREER EVENTS: Career Fairs & Company Information Sessions By Lenroy Jones

Company Information Sessions

C

ompany information sessions are conducted throughout the academic year in the evening for one to two hours. They are part of the recruiting strategy for companies that are in a continuous hiring mode. Whether you are interested in learning more about a specific company or simply gaining additional insight into an industry, these sessions are for you! If you are a junior or senior, you are strongly encouraged to start attending these sessions early in the school year as past graduation and summer recruitment begins early. Freshmen and sophomores who would like to “jump start” their career searches should also seriously consider

Dress for the occasion Dress in business casual attire if a company instructs you to do so or if you are simply researching the company and are a long way off from applying for a job or internship. Men: Sport jacket or tie with no jacket, dress/khaki pants, long-sleeved solid shirt, dark socks, and matching belt and shoes. Women: Blazer, appropriate skirt or pants, long-sleeved solid blouse, neutral hosiery, matching belt, and flat/low heels. Dress in professional attire if you are seriously seeking a full-time or internship position. Men: Dress on the conservative side with a solid color suit and tie, white long sleeve shirt, dark socks and shoes, limited jewelry, neat haircut, no aftershave, clean and trimmed nails, and portfolio with pen. Women: Dress conservatively with a solid dark color suit, pantsuits are acceptable, neat hairstyle, limited jewelry, no perfume and sparse make-up, clean and trimmed nails, and portfolio with pen.

attending. Some research suggests that up to 85% of job opportunities are secured through networking. During these sessions recruiters and representatives interact with participants oneon-one and in small groups allowing resumes and business cards to be exchanged. Moreover, job seekers receive firsthand information about the most current affairs of the company and industry. You should arrive 1015 minutes early and plan to stay 10-15 minutes after the session to network. It is vital that you arrive at the information session prepared. Have your resume or business card in hand with a warm smile. Be prepared with questions and don’t be afraid to interact during the session. Take notes and look interested. Company information sessions usually end

with a “Question and Answer” period, so come prepared with an appropriate list of questions. Use these guidelines when forming your questions. You may ask: Can you describe a typical day for someone in this position? What is the top priority of the person who accepts this job? What are the day-to-day expectations and responsibilities of this job? Can you describe the company’s management style? Can you discuss your take on the company’s corporate culture? What are the company’s values? How would you characterize the management philosophy of this organization? Of your department? How is your company perceived within your industry? Do not ask: Are you hiring? Questions about salary Do you offer bonuses? What is your ranking? What are your benefit packages? Will you pay for relocation?

University of Kentucky Career Fairs

The James W. Career Center conducts career fairs during the Fall and Spring. Check out the Career Center’s web site at www.uky.edu/careercenter for dates and locations. These events provide a great opportunity for students and alumni to meet employers who represent a wide range of industries, and

Career Guide | Fall 2013 | 6

Interested in securing employment before you graduate? In order to increase your chances of obtaining your “Dream Job” or that highly competitive internship, attend both career fairs and company informational sessions. in some instances, obtain interviews with them.

Things to bring to the Career Fair

You should have (20-30) copies of your resume in an easy to read format on plain white or cream colored paper and free of any typos. If you are looking at several career options, you may want to bring two or more customized resumes for each career objective. Rehearse a short 2-3 minute self-introduction. After you have handed the recruiter your resume, you should be prepare to expand on it. This is the time for you to give basic information about yourself and your career interests. Before the event, generate a targeted list of the companies on which you want to focus. Select your top seven to ten companies at the most. Gather information as you would for a job interview. To maximize the brief time you have with each employer you need to know how your skills and interests match their needs. Don’t just concentrate on the big name companies. There often are great opportunities with companies with which you are not familiar that you can use your remaining resumes.

Dress professionally! There is no such thing as “business casual” at a career fair. Dress as if you are going to a formal interview. In fact, some recruiters will actually hold impromptu interviews at the career fair, so be prepared! Take time BEFORE the career fair to research your targeted companies. At the very least, read the enclosed list of companies attending to learn about participating companies and organizations BEFORE you approach recruiters. Do your research! Nothing bothers a recruiter more than a student who approaches them at the table and says, “So, tell me about your company….” Tell the recruiter your name, your class year, and whether you’re interested in a fulltime, co-op, or internship position. You may then reveal your career interest, major(s) and, finally, why you are interested in their company. Collect business cards from the recruiters you have met. Use these cards to write followup letters to those in which you are most interested. Don’t be surprised, if the recruiter does not have business cards. Ask for their email address and communicate that you would like to follow up at a later date. Take a few minutes immediately after you leave each table to write detailed notes about the contact(s) you made. Include the names and titles of people who may not have had business cards. Collect company marketing collateral (i.e., brochures, CD’s flyers, etc.). This information can help you in your more in-depth research prior to a formal interview. Be self-confident! A career fair gives you the opportunity to practice your interview skills in a less formidable environment than a formal interview.

Take advantage of Career Fairs and Company informations sessions For more information about career fairs and companies conducting information sessions on campus, you must register for a Wildcat CareerLink account. You can register by visiting the website www.uky.edu/careercenter or by contacting the office at (859) 2572746. On occasion, student registered with Wildcat CareerLink will receive emails bout activities such as, companies conducting sessions and other recruiting activities (i.e. career fairs, workshops, seminars, etc.). The employer information sessions will generally be conducted in the Stuckert Career Center or a classroom on campus. Don’t visit the booths with friends or family. This is not a sign of professionalism. Interact with the recruiters on your own in order to make your own positive impression! Don’t carry a backpack, large purse, or other paraphernalia with you. Carry your resume in a professional-looking portfolio or small briefcase. This will keep your resume neat and handy, and gives you a place to hold recruiters’ business cards. We have partnered with a student group to offer a coat check service for a small fee of $1 to store your items. Don’t arrive during the last hour of the fair, because some employers will have to travel from out of the area and they may need to leave early. If you come late, you may miss the opportunity to meet with recruiters from the companies in which you are interested. Don’t dress casually!

James W. Stuckert Career Center Launches New Registration Logo: The Career Management Tool that Gives You an Edge By Naitore Djigbenou and Reba Carroll Returning students, graduating seniors, and alumni from the University of Kentucky are returning to a new logo for Wildcat CareerLink, a career management tool that will assist them in their search for employment, fellowships or internships. Additionally, it provides students with many other career resources to help with the job search process and preparation graduate and professional schools. Students can access the system through the home page of the James W. Stuckert Career Center website. This career management tool can average 400 jobs and internships throughout the year for users to browse. Wildcat CareerLink offers additional features, such as an interactive resume builder, a document library of sample cover letters and resumes, company profiles and contact information, a calendar of events and upcoming on-campus interviews. “This career management tool is more than a job board,” said Lenroy Jones, associate director for the Stuckert Career Center. “The technology is designed for the job-seeker or student interested in attending graduate or professional school after graduation as well.” “Users can upload unofficial transcripts, letters of recommendation and writing samples, and can manage all their job interviews or application deadlines on the Wildcat calendar system that syncs with their personal calendars,” said Jones. Wildcat CareerLink serves as a portal, granting users access to multiple career resources. These include InterviewStream, a 24/7 virtual practice interview system that allows students to record a practice interview based on industry specific questions. Career Insider by Vault provides company profiles, salary statistics and salary negotiation advice, as well as infor-

mation about graduate and professional schools. CareerShift allows students to not only execute a job search but also electronically organize their contacts, interviews, job campaigns, and much more in one place. According to Reba Carroll, senior assistant director for the Stuckert Career Center, “Wise students become familiar with these free career management tools as Freshmen in order to become knowledgeable about the world of work or preparation for graduate school, how it functions, and what they need to do in order to outshine their competition.” The economy is improving but employers are not handing out jobs to unprepared students. These resources give a view into real-world career advice and information about global companies. Accounting and Finance senior Ryan Robinson has had three internships, all of which he found through Wildcat CareerLink. “The Stuckert Career Center is the most important building at the University of Kentucky and, sadly enough, one of the most underutilized,” Robinson said. “I believe students my age sometimes forget the reason that they came to college, and ultimately that is to get a job,” said Robinson. The James W. Stuckert Career Center also recently added to its logo to include the phrase; EXPLORE…ENGAGE… CONNECT…! Our goal through providing the Wildcat CareerLink online career management resource is to provide students with access to an invaluable means for a successful career development and planning process. Students can register for a Wildcat CareerLink account at www.uky.edu/careercenter. For additional information, please call (859) 257-2746.
