October 2013

Taking Arts to the Streets! The Lied Center for the Performing Arts is looking for students from the University of Kansas that want to be involved with building and creating a sculptural piece of art work from salvaged materials. We are connecting an art project with the upcoming performance: Red, Black, & GREEN: a blues by Mark Bamuthi Joseph. Check out more about the performance here: http://www.lied.ku.edu/events/rbgb.shtml. Theaster Gates, the installation artist for the performance, uses salvaged materials from the Chicago area. His projects can be found at http://theastergates.com/home.html. We are looking for about 20 students to help bring this idea to life. (The project is aimed towards architecture, design, sculpture, engineering, fine arts, environmental studies, social justice studies, English/creative writing, and similar fields as it relates to the overarching themes of the performance. – too wordy – take, rewrite, or take out)! Perks are included for helping with the creation of the sculpture! Perks include meeting with Mark Bamuthi Joseph, the artistic director and creator of the performance, seeing the installation work of Theaster Gates pre-performance, and receiving tickets to the show on November 9th, 2013! Deadline for participants applying is October 18th; the first meeting will be early the following week. Participation is on a first come/email back, first serve basis. More info will be provided at the first meeting, where student participants work out theme ideas, dates, size, etc. Here at the Lied Center we think it’s important to create and further a symbiotic relationship between the performing arts and the university. Our hope is that this project will combine departments, groups, organizations, and people under the roof of art.
