Worldfilm

The 10th Tartu Festival of Visual Culture, known as Maailmafilm or Worldfilm, screens around 50 anthropology and ethnography documentaries. Over the course of a week they take the audience on a journey around the world’s continents, shining the spotlight on all things strange and, in the process, making them familiar. The screenings are accompanied by themed exhibitions, workshops and meetand-greets with the film makers.

International gala of ballet schools and Vanemuine Theatre ballet gala

At the international ballet gala Kolmas lend or ‘The class of 2013’, graduates from the Ida School of Dance will be performing with dancers from the Estonian National Ballet and fellow students from ballet schools in Latvia, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Russia. A week later, performances will be given at the Vanemuine Theatre’s spring gala ranging from classical ballet to modern dance, set to the music of Tchaikovsky. On stage alongside soloists from the Vanemuine will be guest dancers from ballet schools in Berlin, Basel, Antwerp, Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn.

The Spring Days festival brims with student esprit and gives both participants and onlookers the chance to let their spirit y as part of its packed programme of entertainment and culture. Students are a little bit crazy at the best of times, after all! The positivity the festival exudes has been winning audiences over in Tartu for decades.

Tartu International Literary Festival “Prima Vista”

The name given to this festival, ‘Prima Vista’, can be interpreted in a number of ways. One is note-reading in the musical sense without any preparation; another, of course, is love at first sight. Tartu’s literary festival is a party enjoyed by authors, publishers and readers alike.

Festival of Archaic Creation “RegiÖÖ” www.tartu.ee/regioo

The theme of this year’s Regiöö festival is ‘Land of wonders’, taking in both those of the world of folklore and those of different peoples and different countries. People have passed on their traditions from generation to generation through folk songs and poetry. Masters of music, song, dance and handicraft from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Scandinavian countries, Poland and Russia will be giving their own interpretations – ancient and modern alike – at this year’s festival.

International Night of Museums will be taking off in Tartu in a big way. As you might expect of the City of Good Thoughts, there are plenty of museums to be found here, and they’ll all be looking to surprise visitors on the Night of Museums. The theme of the Night of Museums 2013 will be ‘There are people in the night’.


6–9 JUNE

12th Estonian Composers Festival This festival presents the audience with a wide range of new Estonian music and premiere performances given by first-class musicians. The composer whose works have been selected as the theme for the 2013 festival is Arvo Pärt, and one of the headline acts will be the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. Concerts will be held in St John’s Church in Tartu, and there will also be daytime music recitals, composers’ workshops and a night university.

Tartu County Dance Festival www.kultuuriaken.tartu.ee

This festival, which is one big party for local folk dancers, is held on the outskirts of Tartu on the shores of Lake Raadi – the historical home of the Estonian National Museum. The site is full of meaning for local culture and will play host to the telling of stories through the medium of dance – stories inspired by heritage culture on a range of subjects close to Estonians’ hearts.

Pop Choir Festival The tradition of the song festival in Estonian culture is as strong as it ever was – the power and energy of singing together still captivates people. The Pop Choir Festival held in Tartu is one form of expression of this force: 7000 choral singers performing well-known rock and pop songs, supported by some of the country’s most renowned soloists and the Estonian Dream Big Band. And the singing doesn’t stop on stage – everyone in the audience joins in, too!

International Folklore Festival “Baltica“ www.kultuuriaken.tartu.ee

Baltica opens up the doors to a world of folk customs, songs, dances and music. Folklore works are performed at the event, which is jointly organised by the three Baltic States, in as authentic a way as possible. In 2013 Tartu will host the opening concert of the prestigious festival. Those showcasing the folk culture of their forefathers will be coming from countries all around the Baltic Sea, as well as from places much further afield, including Jordan, India and Kenya.

Festival „Glasperlenspiel“ www.erpmusic.com

The Festival name has been inspired by the events of Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same title. This hints that „Glasperlenspiel“ showcases musicians interpreting musical works from an unusual angle. The reputable festival focuses on original instruments, unusual collectives and connections with ohter arts and philosophy.


19–21 JULY

Tartu Hanseatic Days Hanseatic Days revive the idea of Tartu as an ancient trading town on the order of East and West. The festival heart is the big handicraft and farm product market on the city centre squares and park areas. Old techniques and customs are introduced; concerts, dance parties and exhibitions take place. All this underlines also the role of modern Tartu as the meeting place of cultures.

Summer Concert by Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra www.vanemuine.ee

To the delight of townsfolk the popular tradition of the early 20th century of holding free summer concerts in the natural amphitheatre in Kassitoome Valley – the historical heart of the city of Tartu – has been reinstated. Classical music will head the programme, which will be led by the Vanemuine Theatre’s musical director and senior conductor Paul Mägi.

Wind Band Festival „Mürtsub pill“ www.potartu.ee

„Mürtsub pill“ is a cheerful international summer event filling Tartu city centre with diverse wind music. At the largest orchestral music festival in Estonia one can liste to children’s orchestras, dance to big band music and enjoy a grandiose concert by joint orchestras.

Tartu Love Film Festival tARTuFF

For almost a week during the tARTuFF festival, Town Hall Square in Tartu becomes a free open-air cinema with the biggest screen in the Baltic States filling the late summer nights with the warmth of love films and huge audiences. In addition to the magic of cinema, film-lovers are also treated to a densely packed programme of documentaries. This very popular festival also includes meet-and-greets with film makers, fiery debates, exciting literary events and concerts.

Tartu Music Week www.tartumuusika.ee

Tartu Music Week, which takes place at the same time as the tARTuFF, takes in the entire city. On openair stages dotted about the town – including some in places you would least expect to find them – and at concerts in clubs the most exciting new artists from Tartu and southern Estonia perform for audiences.

Contemporary Art Festival “ART IST KUKU NU UT”

ART IST KUKU NU UT is a festival dedicated to contemporary art from all over the world at which the audience can admire the works of leading international artists and curators and of course also Estonian artists. The educational programme that accompanies its exhibitions involves most of the institutions offering art education in Tartu as well as local galleries and Tartu Art Museum.

Estonian Theatre Festival “DRAMA“ www.draama.ee

Very popular among the public, Draama has become a gathering point for those interested in Estonian theatre and how it speaks to today’s society. As previously, the audience will be treated to a number of programmes running in parallel as well as exhibitions, club nights and concerts.


27 SEPTEMBER

Researchers’ Night Festival www.ahhaa.ee

In September the AHHAA Science Centre will be inviting science enthusiasts young and old to this special festival. A series of events held over the space of one week will seek to show people what researchers actually do and to showcase the latest achievements in a variety of fields. The festival culminates in European Researchers’ Night on 27 September, when more than 300 events will be taking place around Estonia.

Song Festival “Lehesaju Muusika� www.mellnovfest.com

This international festival is a treat for those who love performing and listening to self-penned songs. Taking to the stage are talented and well-known bards who have been honing their skills with great success for many years. Performers come from around the world, many representing Slavic culture.


10–13 OCTOBER

Early Music Festival „Orient et Occident“ www.festivitas.ee

Tartu Early Music Festival offers the possibility to (re) discover the connections between Western and Oreintal music cultures. Enchanting soundscapes that have shaped Eastern and Western art music for centuries and millenniums melt into a unified whole. Audiences can listen to the world’s top performers and rare works as well as see exotic instruments. In addition, lectures, master classes and youth programmes.


31 OCTOBER – 2 NOVEMBER

IDeeJazz IDeeJazz presents the audience with world-class Estonian music brimming with ideas and some outstanding performers from more distant shores. It brings together the best local jazz and rhythmic music artists and performers and showcases the latest trends and concepts. Audiences are also treated to the works of young Tartu musicians.

Battle of EST www.boe.ee

Battle of EST or BOE is the unofficial breakdancing championships. For the 13th time it will be bringing to Tartu the world’s best breakdancing crews to determine the overall winners among those from the world’s four leading competitions. Audiences will see different dance types including popping and hip-hop. The very best dancers from each invited crew will take part in the B-boy 1vs1 contest.


7–10 FEBRUARY

Miss Valentine www.vkjanika.ee

Miss Valentine is Europe’s biggest rhythmic and group gymnastics competition and will be drawing more than 500 athletes from around the world to Tartu. In 2013 the city will also host a Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup event – the first time such an attractive and graceful competition is being held not only in Estonia, but anywhere in northern Europe. Athletes will compete in four individual events: hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. The tournament will end with a gala performance.

42nd Tartu Marathon www.tartumaraton.ee

Tartu’s skiing marathon is the biggest of its kind in eastern Europe, and professionals consider the course it follows to be one of the most interesting and attractive in the world. A highly enjoyable event, it is entered each year by around 10,000 skiers. Adults can choose between the 31 km and 63 km distances, while younger athletes can take part in races designed especially for them. The marathon forms part of the Worldloppet international cross-country skiing series.

31st SEB Tartu Marathon www.tartumaraton.ee

The SEB Tartu Marathon is the biggest cross-country running event in the Baltic States and attracts thousands of competitors every year. The course winds its way through the ever-changing landscapes of southern Estonia. Entrants can choose between the 10 km and 23 km distances and can decide for themselves whether to complete the course by running or Nordic walking.


28 MAY

48th Gustav Sule Memorial Competition

The organisers of this international athletics competition named the event after Estonian javelin legend Gustav Sule. Held at Tamme Stadium in Tartu, it regularly attracts Estonia’s most outstanding athletes.

Tallinn-Tartu Grand Prix www.tartumaraton.ee

The international cycling event known as ‘Estonian Cycling Weekend’ comprises a number of competitions, the centrepiece of which is the 180 km road race for professional cyclists from Tallinn to Tartu. The race forms part of the UCI series of the International Cycling Union and brings cyclists from all over the world to Estonia.

The second day of the ‘Estonian Cycling Weekend’ event sees some of the world’s best known cyclists go head-to-head with local riders in a race around Tartu. The most famous street race in Estonia, it attracts huge crowds of onlookers every year.

32nd SEB Tartu Rally www.tartumaraton.ee

This road race, the biggest of its kind in the region, brings recreational cyclists and leading athletes together in one competition. The third event in the international ‘Estonian Cycling Weekend’ competition, it covers distances of 73 km and 137 km. The start and finish lines are in the centre of Tartu, but the majority of the course covers the twisting and turning roads of southern Estonia.


20–21 JULY

Tartu ITU European Triathlon CUP ww.tartutriatlon.ee

This international city triathlon, which sees the streets of the city centre criss-crossed with competition lanes, is very exciting to watch. It includes events for recreational triathlon lovers of all ages as well as a European Cup event for professional athletes. The triathlon is a test of strength and endurance in swimming, cycling and running.


26 JULY

Mishin Mission International Figure Skating Gala

The ice rink at the LĂľunakeskus shopping centre in Tartu will host a gala performance by ďŹ gure skaters from around the world and give the local audience an unmissable opportunity to see the competitive programmes of athletes preparing for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Among those promising to attend the event are a range of medal hopefuls including Vancouver Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko.

SEB 7th Tartu Inline Skating Marathon www.tartumaraton.ee

What makes this competition special, apart from the fact that it is the biggest rollerblading event anywhere in the Baltic States and Scandinavia, is that every kilometre of the course is unique. The starting line for this popular marathon is in Jõgeva, while the finishing line is in Tartu. Entrants can choose between distances of 19 km and 48 km, which means that trained skaters of all levels of fitness and endurance can take part. There is also a sprint event and a children’s race.


15 SEPTEMBER

16th SEB Tartu Cycling Marathon www.tartumaraton.ee

The third biggest cross-country cycling event of its kind in the world, this competition has races for all age groups and for recreational cyclists and professional athletes alike. Around 7500 cyclists take part every year. The main distances of 40 km and 89 km lead competitors away from the hustle and bustle of the city and through the ever-changing landscapes of southern Estonia. There is also a cross-country sprint and children’s races.

2nd Tartu City Marathon www.tartumaraton.ee

This classic marathon, covering the traditional 42.2 km, winds its way through the streets of Tartu in one big circle – making every kilometre along the course unique. The Tartu Autumn Fun Run, which is very popular among recreational runners, is held at the same time, and the day of events also includes the Student Marathon, which is open to everyone from current students to teaching staff and alumni. The fun run and student marathon courses are 10 km long and can be completed by running or Nordic walking.
