One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, is engineered to be the safest and strongest skyscraper ever built. Follow the final year of exterior construction, culminating in the milestone of reaching the symbolic height of 1,776 feet. For head of construction Steve Plate, as well as scientists, engineers, ironworkers and curtain wall installers, this is a construction job suffused with the history of the site and a sense of duty to rebuild from the ashes of Ground Zero. “One World Trade Center” airs Wednesday, February 5, at 10pm

As urban space shrinks, we build higher and faster than ever before, creating a new generation of skyscrapers. Super skyscrapers are pushing the limits of engineering, technology and design to become greener, stronger, smarter and more luxurious than their predecessors.

Upon completion, One57, on Manhattan’s 57th Street, will rise more than 1,000 feet, making it the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere and boasting spectacular views of Central Park. Condominiums at One57 showcase state-of-the-art interiors — double-height ceilings, full-floor apartments, bathrooms clad in the finest Italian marble and the finest material finishes. Follow the teams tasked with creating New York’s most luxurious residential skyscraper and their ambition to redefine luxury living in the big city.

Shanghai Tower isn’t just a skyscraper — it’s a vertical city. A collection of businesses, services and hotels, it fits a population the size of Monaco into a footprint the size of a football field. Within its walls, residents can literally work, rest, play and relax in public parks. Each of the tower’s nine cylindrical buildings, stacked on top of each other, will have its own verdant multistory atrium, or “sky lobby.” When complete, the structure will dominate Shanghai’s skyline, towering over its neighbors as a testament to China’s economic success and the ambitions of the city’s wealthy elite.

Commonly known as “the cheese grater,” the Leadenhall Building is the pinnacle of London’s avant-garde architecture. Designed as a tapered tower with a steel exoskeleton, it will be the tallest skyscraper in the city of London, and the most innovative. The teams behind the Leadenhall project had to radically rethink every aspect of the traditional building model. Follow the monumental challenges of erecting this super skyscraper — constructed off-site, delivered to its final location and stacked and bolted together like a giant Lego set.

Two-thirds of Californians get their water from a vast inland Delta east of San Francisco Bay, at the confluence of California’s two largest rivers, the Sacramento and the San Joaquin. The water reaches cities from San Jose to San Diego and supplies millions of acres of Central Valley farmland through massive infrastructure projects built over the past century. But the Delta’s natural ecosystem has declined, and it’s become ground zero for the state’s most contentious battles over water and endangered species. The Delta is home to threatened species, including Delta smelt and Chinook salmon. To protect fish species, limits were placed on how much water could be pumped out of the Delta. Now, Governor Jerry Brown is proposing a $24.5 billion fix, known as the Bay Delta Conservation Plan. Two 35-mile water tunnels would cross the Delta, bypassing the ecosystem from below. More than 100,000 acres of habitat would be restored. The majority of the costs would be covered by the water users. Concerns remain over the true cost of Brown’s proposal and whether the plan would help the Delta’s ecosystem recover, satisfy farmers and water consumers. To follow the ongoing story, explore KQED’s in-depth online coverage. kqed.org/science/series/ca-delta
Download a free, MultiTouch book about the Delta from KQED and the East Bay Regional Park District.
Experience the online video series. KQED’s award-winning Web video series Art School introduces contemporary artists who discuss their careers and intentions, then demonstrate hands-on techniques or concepts. The latest episode features Hassan El Tayyab and Shiloh Parkerson — leaders of the East Bay band American Nomad, which makes a significant contribution to the local music scene. Learn about the band’s history and its soon-to-be-released first full-length album, Country Mile, produced by Bay Area bluegrass legend Laurie Lewis. El Tayyab and Parkerson also discuss their songwriting and composition process and perform some of their rich, lively, foot-tapping tunes.
