MONIQUE BASSON NEARLY 500 underprivileged children from an informal settlement in Jeffreys Bay will soon be able to attend their very own primary school, situated right on their doorstep. After 55 months of meetings and discussions, construction on the first primary school in Ocean View is set to start in the next month or two. According to Johan Vos, the driving force behind the planned school, they hope to receive the green light from the municipality to start building the school in September or October this year. The new school, that will be build at a cost of R25 million on the piece of ground opposite the road to Mari-

na Martinique, will accommodate a maximum of 450 learners from Grade R to Grade 7 with a maximum of 20 to 25 learners per class. School fees of R60 per month per child will be applicable, and only children from informal settlements may apply to attend the school. “Our school is a private school for underprivileged children. Building have not even started and we already have a waiting list,” said an excited Vos. According to Vos, the whole idea behind the primary school started with five children six years ago. Co-founders of Victory4All (V4All) Projects, Vos and his wife Astrid, first came to Jeffreys Bay in November 2002. Touched by the great need in the community, they started V4All six months later. “In 2003 and 2004 we just walked

through the informal settlement to talk, and pray and bless the people. In May 2005 we started our Victory4All Christian School, situated in our worship centre in Tokyo Sexwale, with a mere five children,” said Vos. “During the years the number of learners have grown to such an extend that we realised that our current building will be too small to accommodate a complete primary school. In February 2008 we had our first meeting with the municipality to enquire about the 3 hectare piece of land in Ocean View. Now, after 55 months of meetings and discussions and a lot of trouble, we hope to get the green light in September from the municipality to ‘bless’ the children with a new building.” Construction will take between 12 and 18 months.
