The upgrade has the support of various local environmental, tourism and surfing associations who were approached for opinion prior to submission to council.
Making the best of a ‘wet’ situation
This follows after residents of Plane Street in Jeffreys Bay submitted a proposal to council, requesting that the area should be returned to its original state, before it was illegally turned into a parking area by residents and visitors. This proposal, accompanied by a report prepared by the Coastal and Environmental Services of Grahamstown wherein Professor Roy Lubke states that the dune should be returned to its original state with a viewing area for the public while vehicles should be restricted to the offroad parking and not allowed onto the dune proper, was approved by council in June this year. The upgrade of the area will involve landscaping and replanting with indigenous plants, as well as a walkway that will lead to a benched viewing area and the paving of an offroad area for parking. Landscaping of the area and replanting of indigenous plants have already commenced. The area which is not zoned as a parking area and forms part of POS 2434 which incorporates all the indigenous bush between the high water mark and the beachfront erwe.
