Editorial The quality road
It is not difficult to produce a mink skin. As a matter of fact it is so easy that in wildlife, mink are doing it without human interference. However, if mink is to meet the very high demands for quality, which we humans make for the fur coat, then it needs a helping hand. In this and subsequent issues of Fur News we will be focusing on what we call the Quality Road. Many people think that fur farming is a purely practical discipline, but nothing is further from the truth. Modern fur farming is a highly specialized knowledge industry. The farmer must be in control of the family background of his breeding animals; he must have knowledge of genetics to be able to breed special types of mink; he must be in control of the feed because the feed is important for welfare, skin quality, size and fertility; he must have a very thorough knowledge about diseases, how to avoid infection and how to minimize the damages in an affected fur farm. The farmer must know the animals’ behaviour so that he can quickly intervene if the animals do not thrive. And he must know all the practical things, ie how to run the farm effectively. It requires a practical understanding but also a thorough knowledge of laws, etc. The demands on the modern mink farmer are so heavy that it is impossible for the individual farmer to meet the requirements. Therefore Kopenhagen Fur has over the years built a fine-meshed structure for the Danish fur farmers

Modern fur farming is a highly specialized knowledge industry. providing the individual farmers with unique tools for the operation of their farms. It is the correlation between the community and the individual farmer that accounts for the international strength of Danish fur farming, and it is this interaction and structure that we wish to give the readers an insight in. It is so exciting that the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs appointed the Danish fur farmers one of Denmark’s clusters of competence, ie a branch that due to the way it organizes itself has achieved a significantly larger global market share than its size determines. A few years ago, the Ministry published a report on user driven innovation and used Kopenhagen Fur as an example of a

production operating system that made it possible for the farmers to produce exactly the skins that are in greatest demand and thus obtain the best price. I hope that the readers find the subject as exciting as we do. Enjoy yourself.

the quality road
THE SILICON VALLEY OF FUR BREEDING No place in the world matches Denmark when it comes to knowledge about fur breeding. Every aspect of breeding is gathered - and shared - by Kopenhagen Fur. The high concentration of knowledge makes Denmark the Silicon Valley of fur breeding. BY MICK MADSEN
A few years ago the Danish mink production had a hard time following the market. The demand for Velvet skins was increasing and nothing suggested a shift in favour of Classic skins anytime near. Danish fur farmers had a huge mink production, but only few of them were of the very sought after Velvet qualities. Last year more than three million main type Danish mink skins were Velvet skins. Without increasing the crop, Danish fur breeders have been able to adjust the production towards the Velvet skins that the market is demanding. In a short period of time, the share of Velvet skins has increased significantly. Last season, the share was 35 per cent of the total crop, and according to Quality Manager Bjarne Rasmussen this season’s Danish mink production will count 45 or 50 per cent of the Velvet qualities. Such a dramatic change in production is possible only because Danish fur breeders are using the most advanced breeding programme available. - At Kopenhagen Fur we consider ourselves a professional partner to

“Kopenhagen Fur is the central hub of knowledge. The idea is to provide the farmers with the knowledge they need to become stronger and to produce better qualities” all our stakeholders. On the farm side, Kopenhagen Fur is the central hub of knowledge. The idea is to provide the farmers with the knowledge they need to become stronger and to produce better qualities, says Managing Director Torben Nielsen pointing out that the central ‘hub of knowledge’ provides facilities in every important area of modern fur breeding including research, breeding, counselling, representation of political interests and knowledge sharing. For instance, FurFarmWeb, an internet-
based breeding programme, is available to all Danish fur breeders. Based on the biology of mink and highly advanced mathematics, FurFarmWeb is a tool for the fur breeder for selecting the best breeders. The programme calculates information from seven generations of minks, making it possible for the farmer to breed according to many different quality factors – for example the length of the skin, the hair length – a.o. - In spite of the large number of Danish fur farmers, I am not afraid to claim that

the Danish fur production is the most flexible in the world. It’s simply a necessity for the survival of fur breeding in Denmark that we can adapt to the given market demand very quickly, Torben Nielsen says. RAISING THE QUALITY LEVEL But heavy probability calculation in the breeding programme FurFarmWeb is far from being the only thing that will strengthen Danish fur breeders’ quality profile. Every year more than 600 Danish fur farmers take lessons in quality at Kopenhagen Fur Academy. Quality courses are offered at three levels: beginner, experienced and expert. - Education is essential. We strive to raise the bottom line of the quality level every day. It makes perfectly sense, because quality is our primary competitive factor in a highly salaried country like Denmark, says Torben Nielsen. A great success in the ongoing effort to raise the skin quality on the Danish mink farms took its start in 2007, when Kopenhagen Fur started to offer the fur farmers its assistance to live stock grading.
april 2010
The offer means that Kopenhagen Fur’s highly skilled skin graders help select the breeders on location in accordance with the quality demands of the market. Though the results of the live stock grading project has not lead to definite statistics yet, there is, according to Quality Manager Bjarne Rasmussen, no doubt that the farmers in the live stock grading project are obtaining a higher price per skin now. Over the years, numerous projects have been carried through with the sole purpose of improving the quality of Danish mink skins. The success of these projects is easily measured since Danish mink skins constantly gain around 10 DKK more than skins delivered by suppliers from other countries. At the February auction 2010, the price disparity amounted to 12 DKK. - I know that fur farmers in other countries envy the professionalism in the Danish fur farming sector. Even though we are competitors, we are also colleagues and we help each other in many ways, we share the same interests in fur faming. The Danish fur breeding sector is a close community, says Knud Vest, fur farmer and board
“A great success in the ongoing effort to raise the skin quality on the Danish mink farms took its start in 2007, when Kopenhagen Fur started to offer the fur farmers its assistance to live stock grading. ” member of Danish Fur Breeder Association. The highly concentrated knowledge on every aspect of fur breeding is outstanding in the world - a fact that has been recognized by the Danish government. Along with shipping, the wind industry and a few other areas in which Denmark has shown global strength, fur breeding has been pointed out as a trade for Denmark to trust and build the country’s economic future on – a so-called competence cluster.

A furry Copenhagen Fashion Week By Marie Grabow Westerga ard
With a spectacular runway show, Kopenhagen Fur opened Copenhagen Fashion Week AW/2010/11 on 12 February. As the main sponsor of Copenhagen Fashion Week, Kopenhagen Fur decided to take this opportunity to exhibit the many uses of fur in fashion. To help the organizer hold the extraordinary show Kopenhagen Fur asked ten Danish fashion designers to present their newest designs. The designers were a combination of newcomers - such as the coming men’s wear brand Soulland - and more experienced designers - such as former Great Greenland designer Benedikte
Benedikte Utzon

Utzon and London-based designer Louise Amstrup. Also designers of accessories such as the milliner Soren Bach and accessories designer E&L by Lundqvist made styles for the runway show. All designers visited Kopenhagen Studio to take inspiration for their collections, and the results were an amazing display of fur fashion. For many of the designers the fur styles were a success with both the press and the buyers. E & L by Lundqvist will start a large export of their accessories to China. Especially their mink roses are very popular with the Chinese customers. Also Silas Adler, the creative director of
Soulland, experienced great interest in his fur styles from buyers from all over the world. The show was a success for designers as well as Kopenhagen Fur. As a company with an international profile that was an important graceful compliment. Ms Patrizia Venturelli Christensen, marketing director at Kopenhagen Fur, said at the international press conference before the show: - As one of Denmark’s major exports and the world’s largest supplier of skins to the fashion industry it is both natural and important for us to support the fashion world of Denmark.

Top Lot buyers will use skins in Russia On the February auction there were two top lots, with two different buyers. The Black Velvet female top lot was bought by Manios Dimitrios of Centro Bel Furs, Italy, at the price of DKK 800 (USD 147) per skin.
The course takes place 24 may to 17 June 2010. You can register to participate in the courses online on www.kopenhagenfur.com under ‘Auction site’, About Kopenhagen Fur, Sorting Courses. Mr. Dimitrios who does 70 per cent of his business in Russia, bought the top lot because of his Russian customers. - My customers read Vouge and Elle and are used to the best quality in everything they buy, and that is why they will expect the same of my products, Mr Dimitrios says. For now the top lot is going to be on display on his stand at the MIFUR fair. The second top lot of Mahogany Velvet male was bought by Alessandro Pajaro, SAP FUR Srl, Italy, at the top price of DKK 810 (USD 149) per skin. He is also expecting to use his buy in Russia, but he already has a plan for the skins. - I am going to make a coat for the first lady of Russia, Svetlana Medvedev, Alessandro Pajaro says. The Russian first lady has not put in an order for a fur coat, but she is one of Alessandro Pajaro’s regular customers, and he wants to tempt her with an exclusive coat.

A rare diamond Originally from Thessaloniki, Greece, 26-year-old Eliana Dimitrakopoulou approached Kopenhagen Fur in 2008, and immediately Design and Production Manager Michael Holm realised that Eliana is a rare diamond in the rough just waiting to live up to its potential.
- Eliana’s strength and determination is absolutely overwhelming. She has her mind set on revolutionising fur design as we know it today, and it seems she is well on her way, says Michael Holm about the unique designer and her work. Eliana Dimitrakopoulou recently graduated from ‘London’s College of Fashion’ (LCF), mastering in ‘Fashion Design & Technology – Womenswear’. Eliana was already a fan of fur and the exclusive material’s versatility. In 2005 she participated in MIFUR’s contest in Milan, where she was awarded the 2nd price. Eliana Dimitrakopoulou finished her studies with a fur collection out of the ordinary called ‘The Monkey Collection’. Every piece of the collection shows elements of fur and the professionalism of Eliana’s 10-piece collection can astonish even the most experienced furriers. - It is rare that we meet students with such a good perception of fur as a material and the many possibilities it holds. It has been a true pleasure to work with Eliana all the way through, says Thomas Andersen, Production Manager and head of Kopenhagen Fur’s workshop at Kopenhagen Studio. Eliana’s designs are based on the characteristics of fur, volume, colour, hair direction etc. What others may see as limits she merely counts as challenges to overcome. - I always try to evolve and expand the boundaries of fur and innovative design as in this collection where all pieces are

Creativity in fur brings outstandingly beautiful garments that any client would love to obtain for themselves, she says. Eliana has enjoyed working with Kopenhagen Fur, and she is grateful for the support and advice she has received in
developing her graduation project. – Thanks to Kopenhagen Fur my project became better than I ever expected! I’m looking forward to have a chance to collaborate with Kopenhagen Fur again in the future, she says. Eliana Dimitrakopoulou is a finalist in the prominent REMIX competition. Nordic modesty
Traditionally we are a modest people. However, the reason we merged financial institutions from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden to form the biggest financial group in the Nordic region was not that modest. By combining the different
skills from our region we create a group offering the products and services that truly suit our customers. Dreams and ambitions have generated the wealth of the region and we will partner companies that carry on the tradition and wish to conquer the world.
We are a reflection of our region and its most important natural resource, ideas. We bring a modest Nordic outlook and approach to the market places of the world. We are looking forward to doing business with you ... the Nordic way.
Nordea is the leading financial services group in the Nordic and Baltic Sea region and has more than 10 million customers. Nordea has a presence in 23 countries and is a world leader in Internet banking with 3.3 million e-customers.
