Welcome! Nights are drawing in but this year’s Winter Festival offers a whole host of ways to help you discover how Kinross-shire shines this wintertime. Whether you’re looking for an evening of classic Christmassy music, fun party nights, festive shopping or the chance to try your hand at a new skill and let your talent show, there’s something for you! This year’s Festival takes the theme of ‘shine’, with an array of sparkling activities. Experience the luminous talent of Scotland’s own Eddi Reader (22 Nov), the chance to sing out during a production of the Messiah (23 Nov), lamp-lit storytelling (18 Dec) and the glitzy footlights of ‘One Night on Broadway’ (20 Nov). We are delighted to welcome back our very own singing butcher, Iain Hunter (15 Nov) and we’re looking forward to celebrating new stars at Kinross-shire’s Got Talent (14 Nov). Many of our local groups, clubs and organisations have come in on the act by including their exciting winter events in the Festival programme - from festive floral art to Santa’s Grottos. The hugely successful Festive Street Market is back (29 Nov) with even more stalls filled with sparkling delights, delicious hot food and drinks, live music and family entertainment. Relocated to outside the Green Hotel on The Muirs this year, there should be plenty of space to enjoy the atmosphere whilst supporting our valuable local businesses. For the first time Light Up Kinross will take place the same evening, so make sure you’re there for the big switch-on. Many thanks for your support of our local Festival – whether you attend events, include your group’s event in the programme or put up a poster for us. KLEO coordinates this Festival for you, and we’d love to hear what you think of it. Please read on for more events to make your winter glow!

www.kinrosswinterfestival.co.uk Thanks With this brochure KLEO (Kinross-shire Local Events Organisation) would like to celebrate all local events that are happening in November/December in Kinross-shire. This brochure is produced in co-operation with the Kinross Community Council Newsletter and the www.kinross.cc website who provided us with a great deal of invaluable information, which is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Milnathort Post Office and the Macbeth & Currie Estate Agents who both give us invaluable support helping to sell tickets for various events. Continuing thanks to Fiona and Andrew Turnbull (Fruix Farm) and Todd & Duncan for storing our event equipment and the Boys Brigade for letting us borrow their marquee. Eddi Reader in Concert

Saturday 22 November | 8pm | Loch Leven Community Campus | £24

From the traditional to the contemporary Eddi Reader brings joyous life to all forms of songs! Eddi grew up in Glasgow and Irvine, and it was there that she learned to use music as a vehicle for communicating with others through busking and performing at the local folk clubs. She moved to London in the early 1980s and became a successful session vocalist working with artists such as Alison Moyet, the Waterboys and Annie Lennox and the Eurythmics. However, it was during her time with the charttopping band Fairground Attraction that she really came to the attention of a much wider audience. The single ‘Perfect’ and parent album ‘First of a Million Kisses’ both topped the British charts. Eddi also developed a career in acting, starring in John Byrnes' highly acclaimed 1980s BBC TV series Your Cheatin' Heart and the stage production The Trick Is To Keep Breathing with Siobhan Redmond. She also made her Hollywood movie debut in Me And Orson Welles with Zac Efron and Claire Danes. In 2001 Eddi moved back home to Glasgow, where she recorded the classic ‘Songs Of Robert Burns’ album released to international acclaim in 2003. Awarded the MBE in 2006 for services to singing, she took her Burns songs on tour all over the world and found connections to the bard everywhere from Kolkata, India to Sydney, Australia. Eddi continues to record and play sold out shows all over the world and in February 2014 released her eighth studio album ‘Vagabond’ to great critical acclaim and tracks from this album will feature in her concert set. We are delighted to welcome Eddi as the headline artist for this year’s Winter Festival and think this concert will be, in her own words, “Perfect”. Don’t miss it! For tickets visit www.kinrosswinterfestival.co.uk or Milnathort Post Office or Macbeth Currie Estate Agents, Kinross. 5

Iain Hunter and the Eliot Murray Big Band

Kinross-shire’s Got Talent

Saturday 15 November | 8pm | Loch Leven Community Campus | £12.50

Friday 14 November | 7pm | Loch Leven Community Campus | £5 (adult) £3 (18 and under)

Our local singing butcher is back! After

This will be the 3rd Kinross-shire’s Got Talent Competition as part of Kinross-shire’s

a sell-out concert at this year's Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival at the Queen’s Hall, the classy singer Iain Hunter returns to Kinross with a top orchestra led by Eliot Murray.

Iain’s easy-going warmth, showmanship and the on-the-button pitch, tone and timing of his voice are perfect in the swinging music of the Great American Songbook. Iain’s sincerity and joy of singing comes through in every song he sings; this quality is heard today in the effortlessness and tonal clarity of his voice. The Eliot Murray Big Band with its tight arrangements gives the production real depth. Eliot is an arranger for the BBC Big Band, frequently broadcasting on Radio 2. He has also conducted the band on many occasions for Big Band Special. Eliot has had arrangements played by a varied selection of artists ranging from Sir John Dankworth and James Morrison to Eddi Reader and Lesley Garrett. Come and enjoy this fabulous concert on your doorstep!

Winter Festival. At previous events we have seen a great variety of talent and acts…singing, dancing, baton twirling, comedy, vaulting, magician and tribute acts! This wide variety makes it a fun-packed and entertaining evening.

Last year’s winner guitarist Garry Simpson has had a busy year and just received his certificate for Advanced Higher Music performance! Gary sat the exams while still in primary seven and has recently started at Kinross High School. A great musical talent! In 2012 the overall winner was the act ‘Sacramento’, a fun and well performed dancecabaret act. This year’s winner will receive a top prize of £50. There is a second prize of £25 and a third prize of £10. Again, this year we hope to offer an entertaining evening with a great variety of acts from local talent. Even adults will be able to take part! So don’t hesitate – get your entry form in. You can download it now from www.kinrosswinterfestival.co.uk.

For tickets for both events visit: www.kinrosswinterfestival.co.uk or Milnathort Post Office or Macbeth Currie Estate Agents, Kinross. 7

29 November Move Forward for Murrin Widley! Move Forward Fitness will be organising special dance classes, demo's and fundraising activities as part of the Festive Street Market activities at The Windlestrae (3-7pm) to raise money for a sport wheelchair for 14 year old Murrin Widley who was born with spina-bifida and had an open lesion. She was also diagnosed with Arnold Chari Malformation which is a brain and spinal cord issue, which required major brain surgery. Although wheelchair bound, Murrin has always been a smiley child, and never complains. She loves her wheelchair racing and would love to race David Weir one day. The NHS fund an electric wheelchar for her to get around at school, however, a manual wheel chair is needed for her racing and to keep

up her physical strength and conditioning. This wheelchair costs between £3500 and £4000 and is made to measure, which will help with her racing and conditioning, as she will be able to use her full strength with it. So come along to the demo classes from Move Forward Fitness on 29 November and raise money for this special cause!! For details about the programme or to book your place go to www.moveforwardfitness. co.uk/Help-Murrin.

‘Messiah’ in a Day Sunday 23 November | Rehearsal 2-5pm, Concert 7pm | Kinross Parish Church | Tickets £10 audience / £15 participants

This event is a first for Kinross-shire Winter Festival. Handel’s famous masterpiece – prepared and performed in just one day! The conductor for this performance will be Peter Rutterford who has had a long and distinguished musical career both at home and abroad. He currently directs Perth Choral Union and is also Chairman of Perth Festival of the Arts. During the afternoon he will work with a group of singers of varying ability and experience to prepare the chorus work for Parts 1 and 2 of the Oratorio, ending with the glorious ‘Hallelujah’ chorus. We are fortunate to have secured the services of four young and enthusiastic soloists. Soprano, Jessica Conway who has studied singing in York and Berlin and has performed regularly as a concert and opera soloist mezzo-soprano; Sarah Lucy Penny who is a member of the National Youth Choir and currently studying music at Napier University; tenor, Thomas Henderson an experienced choral tenor who is currently Director of Music at St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh; bass, Paul Grant who is a regular solo and choral performer and former president of Edinburgh Studio Opera. Fulfilling the extremely important role of accompanist for the day will be Bruce Inglis. This promises to be a unique musical experience for both performers and audience. Make sure you are part of it! To participate as a singer, contact info@kleo.org.uk or call 01577 863107. All singers are welcome – from beginners to more experienced choir members.

At the heart of Kinross is a group of buildings, collectively and known locally as Kinross Town Hall. These once proud buildings formerly housed the Town Hall, Carnegie Library and Museum. Having been sadly allowed to deteriorate over the years, they have fallen into a state of disrepair. Planning Consent for the complete renovation and restoration of these Historic Buildings has recently been granted, and working closely with Historic Scotland and Perth & Kinross Council, our aim is to restore these once proud buildings to their former glory, themselves located in the heart of the Kinross Conservation Area. The Carnegie Apartments form an integral part of this major project, these new build Apartments are to be built to the South West of the existing group of buildings within private gated grounds. Gi Given the unique location of these new Apartments, adjacent to not only the Listed Buildings, but also to a Clock Tower, itself a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the quality of this new development will be unsurpassed, in terms of both materials and quality of finish. The Carnegie Apartments, are ideally situated, in the heart of Kinross, with a good range of local shops, professional services, and restaurants nearby. Oppo Opportunities to explore the History of Kinross abound, the nearby Loch Leven Heritage Trail is a few minutes walk from the Carnegie Apartments and offers wonderful opportunities for walking and cycling, over many miles of mainly flat trails and paths, around Kinross and the shores of Loch Leven. Kinross also has excellent golfing and fishing available, all within enjoyable walking distance of the Carnegie Apartments.
