New health program looks at sleep issues “Sleep is the Rodney Dangerfield of health issues. It gets no respect,” says Dr. Phillip Bale, a family practitioner and prevention specialist in Glasgow. While most medical experts agree that adequate sleep is integral to good health, it’s an area that receives scant attention. On the next Health Three60, host Renee Shaw dives into the multi-faceted world of sleep and looks at how it impacts health, safety, and productivity in “Sleepless in Kentucky,” airing Monday, Aug. 25 at 10/9 pm on KET. While people of all ages don’t get enough sleep, the most sleep-deprived are teenagers. Studies show the average American teenager spends more than seven hours a day using entertainment media, time that is often stolen from sleep. While brain research shows that teens require about nine hours, they are only averaging six. In addition to Dr. Bale, the program features UK and U of L sleep experts and researchers, who explain the function of sleep; sleep disorders, particularly sleep apnea; sleep hygiene for every age group; and the role of policy and workplace systems. “Sleepless in Kentucky,” funded in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, also airs Thursday, Aug. 28 at 4/3 pm and Friday, Aug. 29 at 11/10 am on the Kentucky Channel.
