Tori Murden McClure

President, Spalding University EXPLORER, CANOE BUILDER Sure, she was the first woman and American ever to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean and holds the same distinctions for skiing to the South Pole. And yes, she climbs mountains for fun. Yet, this world-renowned adventurer can still succumb to the pleading eyes of a child. One of her nephews asked her to build a boat for him a few years ago, and she did it in her basement workshop. “The day I delivered his canoe, [my nephew’s] two younger brothers looked at him with envy and me with expectation. The third cedar strip canoe is almost finished … [it] needs more sanding and varnishing on the inside, but it is water-tight,” she says. “My husband and I have a terrific workshop. Mac sometimes brags, ‘I am the luckiest man in the world: My wife loves it when I buy her power tools.’ ” In addition to building boats, McClure McClure’s nephews in their aunt-created canoes. shoots archery in her basement, rollerskis, rides bicycles and, of course, rows to maintain her “need to stay physically active.” While she acknowledges her fame as an adventurer, she would much rather be known as a scholar leading Spalding University to new heights. “Serving as president of this great institution is the most important adventure that I have undertaken.”

Dr. Lyle Roelofs

President, Berea College KNITTER When bringing to mind a knitter, one likely doesn’t picture the leader of an internationally known college. But that’s exactly what Berea College President Lyle Roelofs does in his spare time. “It’s a very enjoyable pastime. I learned as a child from my mom,” Roelofs says. “I think I was an annoying son, so my mom taught me knitting to keep me busy.” We’re not talking simple scarves, hats and blankets, mind you. Roelofs is known among his family and friends for making creative sweaters for both humans and canines. He loves a good challenge when it comes to figuring out patterns and how to knit new items. “The hardest things can come up with the nicest solutions to knitting problems,” he says. “I happened upon a handbag with a nice ribbing pattern that gave it extra strength. Figuring out how to do that was enjoyable.” But he does admit to making mistakes. “The hard thing in knitting is to get the size to come out right. I knitted a sweater for my wife, and it was too big,” he says. “I made one for my grandson when he was 2, but he was growing so fast, I didn’t have time to finish the sleeves. He got a sweater vest.”

Dr. Jay Box

President, KCTCS TENNIS PLAYER As the newly named president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, Jay Box has his hands full. However, he does find time to enjoy and promote local artists, including musicians, writers, actors and the like. But his life’s passion is tennis. Ever since he was 10 years old, Box has taken to the court to play both for fun and for work. He played for Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) and coached the sport at Odessa College for several years. Despite his love for tennis, his time on the court is now limited due to three knee surgeries. “I try to get out occasionally, but my mobility is limited in side-to-side movements,” he says. “If you can’t move side to side in tennis, you can’t play very well.”
