“Festival Kaleidoscope” by Hallie O’Kelley Hallie O’Kelley has been making quilt designs for the Kentuck Festival of the Arts for thirty-one years, first executing them as screen prints and now as quilts. These quilts begin as white fabric, which she screen dyes and designs into the beautiful quilt that becomes our event signature each year. Thoughts from Claudia Dreifus, New York, New York I am a journalist for the Science section of a nationally distributed newspaper, an author, a professor at Columbia University. I am also a periodic visitor to Alabama. To this outsider, the Kentuck Center and its Festival, is a special Alabama treasure. Your state is a unique American focal point. Alabama is a hotspot, if you will, for visual and musical art. I don’t know why this is so. But somehow an aggregate of history, experience and culture, combine to make Alabama unusually rich in vernacular art. I suspect that some of it has to do with the fact that Southerners, on the whole, don’t seem afraid to make art; they don’t allow formalism and a lack of expensive materials hold them back. They just go and find stuff to work with and then they do it. Actually, a great deal of what we consider indigenous Americana in music and craft stems from the American South. And especially from Alabama. This is your resource. Like oil and gas are to Louisiana. Like manufacturing once was to Birmingham. What Kentuck does is permit that special Alabama “something” to continue and to thrive. None of this would happen without a hand, without nurture. And it’s Kentuck that helps your vibrant art scene stay alive and even grow. Kentuck is an incubator, a nursery, a home. In addition to supporting Southern artists, the annual Festival actually creates a market for them. Many of your artists would have a much tougher time making a living if Kentuck didn’t bring collectors, dealers and producers to one place at a set moment each year. The annual festival has a national and international reputation for being the best of its kind. But the treats aren’t just visual. I was so impressed by the high quality of the blues and folk musicians who performed at last year’s Festival. These were all performers that I was unaware of. I now watch for them. The dividends that all of Alabama will reap by its continued support of Kentuck are enormous. In addition to economic development, you are aiding our national sense of identity and culture. This program has been made possible in part by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

ART BUILDS A new thing is happening at our year round Kentuck campus. Changes not easily made are on the horizon that will rehabilitate our art center. March 2013 bats invaded us, revealing structural issues in our 95 year-old building. Investing in structural fixes only was not the direction Kentuck’s Board of Director’s wanted to go. Engaging our community to bring special significance in architectural form to create a unique art place befitting of Kentuck’s history was. Blueprints are in progress and by the end of 2015, Kentuck artists and patrons along with the Historic Northport Community will have an art center that truly supports the pristine reputation Kentuck is known for locally and regionally. The bats were truly a gift for change and have brought us great support from friends like Sam Faucett and Mike Ellis’ talented architects. Come back to the Historic Downtown Northport area after the festival and check out how art is building our neighborhood. Traditional artists and a fabric designer can be found nearby on Artist Row and two new places, The Grocery (Studio) and a Weaver (Fiber Artist) recently opened on Main Avenue. Mary’s Cakes – her pastries are a work of art, and Brush Strokes, a learning studio for the visual arts is down the street, just to name a few. We invite you to come be a part of how Art Builds community, relationships and individuals. (Become a member at www.kentuck.org.) DEMONSTRATING ARTISTS 2014 Keeping awareness of traditional craft alive Giving traditional craft contemporary style

Kentuck began as a Northport centennial celebration featuring reenactments and demonstrations of southern folkways. While the festival has expanded both in size and scope over its 43 year history, we continue to value the work of traditional and contemporary artisans. Their work at Kentuck helps bring awareness of these crafts to new generations. Throughout the Festival, throughout the park, Kentuck’s Demonstrating Artists show the techniques of their work. These artists include members of local craft guilds and university students as well as visiting artists from around the state and nation. Many offer the opportunity for you to try your hand in their medium.

Look for booths with these signs to see artisans doing their work and find interactive fun. Alabama Folk Arts Master Teacher Demonstrating Artist

GUEST ARTISTS 2014 Whether you call them visionary, outsider, folk, and/or self-taught artists, these artists are indisputably “Kentuck.” Until 2012, the guest artists were curated by Kentuck’s late founding director, Georgine Clarke. Many of those original guest artists remain with some additions, decided upon through a network of observations and contacts, including artists, collectors, arts administrators and Kentuck’s staff, board, volunteers, and studio artists. These artists represent the art that put Kentuck on the international map for people who appreciate outsider and visionary art.

Kentuck for Kids Engaging children in the thrill of creating art and craft with their own hands is the guiding goal of Kentuck for Kids. In the center of the Festival and in some other locations throughout the park, volunteers provide children and their parents with hands-on art and building adventures: • • • • • • • •

Befriending a new musical instrument at the musical petting zoo Drawing a self-portrait Nailing together a birdhouse Tie-dying fabric Working with fiber Marbling paper Crafting cornhusk and yarn dolls Impressing and stamping paper

Always something interesting, and always something to take home and treasure for a while! Children also can choose to be the canvas for custom face painting to celebrate their personalities or favorite animals, teams, or flowers.

Please remember that creativity can be messy, and the dyes used for tie-dying are permanent. Bring your kids to the park in clothes and shoes that they don’t have to worry about keeping clean. The Kentuck for Kids area is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., opening an hour after and closing an hour before the rest of the Festival. Children must be accompanied by an adult or by a responsible teen, for everyone’s safety and enjoyment. All activities are free, and some have an additional component (for example, tie-dying a t-shirt instead of a bandana) available for a reasonable fee. Kentuck for Kids is made possible by the dedicated volunteers and groups that give their time to the festival. In addition to the core Kentuck for Kids volunteers, groups that enrich children’s Festival experience and appreciation for the making of art include the Children’s Hands-on Museum, the Tuscaloosa Symphony Guild, the Alabama Blues Project, Habitat for Humanity, University of Alabama book arts and ceramics students, the Kentuck Clay Co-op, the West Alabama Fiber Guild, and the West Alabama Woodworkers Association.

13 Ghosts and Jeffrey

This keepsake edition of the timeless best-seller 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey by folklorists Kathryn Tucker Windham and Margaret Gillis Figh reproduces in facsimile the original hardcover version of a beloved classic. One of the best-known and widely shared books about the South, 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey has haunted the imaginations of generations of delighted young readers since it was first published in 1969. Written by nationally acclaimed folklorists Kathryn Tucker Windham and Margaret Gillis Figh, the book recounts Alabama’s thirteen most ghoulish and eerie ghost legends.

Steven H. Hobbs is a storyteller, educator, lawyer, poet, ethicist, historian, quilter, entrepreneur, consultant, actor, community organizer, and world traveler. Steven sees himself as a storyframer, one who structures stories around history, law, entrepreneurship, culture, and life. Storyteller Hobbs likes to share stories of wisdom, humor, and the triumph of the human spirit.
