Welcome In our University’s 50th anniversary year, I am delighted that our largest ever range of sporting facilities and activities are available for you to get involved in. Our superb new facilities have been really well received. Membership and usage is higher than ever, and we are already looking to develop further to cope with the continual increase in demand for sporting opportunities. Glasgow recently hosted a wonderful Commonwealth Games and, adding this to the London 2012 legacy, there has never been a better time to develop a healthy and active lifestyle. This guide, our website and members of my team should be able to provide all the information you need to get the most from sport during your time at Kent. Health and fitness consultations Our highly qualified staff are able to help you by providing a full range of health, fitness and nutritional consultations, whether you are a University of Kent student, staff member or live and work in the area. Our health and fitness consultation service is a great way to ensure that you achieve maximum benefit from your workout. Our qualified instructors offer an initial one to one fitness consultation to discuss your lifestyle and agree a way forward to achieve your goals. Classes include Spinning, Zumba®, international programmes from LES MILLS™ as well as an extensive selection of other fitness and wellbeing classes such as Pilates, Yoga, Boxercise and Circuit Training (classes are subject to change). There are several types of exercise class, each with specific benefits: ■■ Cardio – burns calories, improves muscular tone and boosts cardiovascular fitness. ■■ Mind and body – improves posture and tone, increasing flexibility and strength while revitalising the body and mind. ■■ Dance – energetic, calorie-burning classes, designed to increase rhythm and coordination skills, using energizing movements. ■■ Core – these classes work all areas of your core front and back, with balance and strength moves combined for an intense workout. ■■ Cross training – working different parts of your body using your own body weight and free weights. Kent Sport has invested significantly in the facilities within the Sports Centre, including adding a physiotherapy clinic situated within the state of the art fitness suite. There are many activities provided for members and a number of activities open to all. As well as all the exciting fitness and dance classes there are many opportunities to enjoy team sports, such as futsal, lacrosse, netball and dodgeball. You can also get involved with racket sports including tennis, squash and badminton. events at kent sport Easter Academy Four day sports academy for children from 7 to 14 years old. 13 to 16 April 2015. Club/county level experience is mandatory for participation.

The Ultimate Karate Fighter's Boot Camp For experienced athletes teaching fitness, conditioning, attacking, defensive techniques and more. The boot camp is led by Wayne Otto OBE, Britain's most successful karate champion.

FitnessFest (spring term) Part of the Worldfest celebration; an energetic, calorie-burning master class from some of the UK's best instructors. Designed to improve rhythm and coordination skills, using energizing movements.

Xercise Factor (spring term) A six-week fitness and exercise programme to change participants health and lifestyle habits. Any Kent Sport member can apply to participate in the Xercise Factor and participants are selected by the fitness team. Each participant is mentored by a member of the fitness team. Following an initial assessment they are then supported through a strict regime in order to achieve their goals.

Fit 4 the Beach (summer term) Fit 4 the Beach challenges Kent Sport members to complete a gruelling sixweek tailored beach body programme in the fitness suite, with one-to-one guidance and support. This is an annual summer term promotion and is open to all Kent Sport members.

SummerZone (summer vacation) SummerZone is the University of Kent’s week-long summer sports camps for five to 14 year olds, run by double Olympian Mel Clewlow. The children participate in sports, fun and learning. The camp is packed with football, kwik cricket, rugby, hockey, tennis and other activities and is led by qualified coaches.
SummerZone 2015 is from Monday 10 to Friday 14 August and Monday 17 to Friday 21 August, from 9am to 3pm.

Canterbury parkrun Weekly 5km run hosted by the University of Kent and open to all.

Student sports clubs There are over 50 student sports clubs at Kent offering something for everyone from American football to ultimate frisbee. Whatever your sport or even if you have never played, you will have the opportunity to try sport and play socially or competitively. Early Bird membership offer Students can benefit from the fitness suite, enjoy racket sports and participate in games on the outdoor pitches such as football and hockey. In addition student members can receive sports coaching and participate in team sports such as lacrosse, netball and dodgeball. There are many activities for students to choose from with the 50:50 events celebrating Kent's 50th anniversary and also with a variety of activities for all abilities with the new Let's Play programme funded by Sport England.

intramural sport Inter College Cup The Inter College Cup is a multi-event sports competition for students at the University of Kent, and is played between the colleges that make up the Canterbury campus. Despite the natural competitive element that comes with any tournament, the general ethos is one of involvement and participation, with every team welcoming players of all abilities. The sports are: Badminton (mixed sex) Played in a singles and mixed doubles format. Chumash Chumash is an indoor 3x3 version of lacrosse.

Cricket Fast-paced indoor cricket action for all involved. Men’s basketball Now entering a seventh season since its inception in the 2008/09 academic year, the Inter College Basketball League has become a regular addition on the intramural calendar. Fixtures are played on alternate Sundays between 1pm and 5pm in the main hall at the Sports Centre. Men’s football The Inter College Football League is the oldest intramural competition on campus and consists of two teams from Darwin, Eliot, Keynes and Rutherford and a postgraduate team from Virginia Woolf.

Netball Inter College Netball involves participants competing in shorter length versions of the game. Rowing Individual time trials using the indoor rowing machines at the Sports Centre's fitness suite. This event is open to both men and women. Tennis (mixed sex) Played in a singles and mixed doubles format. If you are interested in adding any additional sports to the Inter College Cup calendar, email sportsdevelopment@kent.ac.uk

Other Intramural events Futsal league Futsal is a variant of football played indoors on a smaller pitch, with a smaller ball and between two teams of five players. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. Kent Amateur Football League KAFL was set up by students with a focus on inclusion and increased participation in 11-a-side football on campus. League matches are played every Saturday and/or Sunday. Mixed dodgeball league Mixed dodgeball has a maximum number of six players per team on

court at any one time. The main objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team. Mixed rounders Played once a year in the summer term, this school favourite involves mixed sex teams and is open to all students at the University of Kent. Racket leagues and ladders Players of all standards have the opportunity to play other participants at their own convenience. Racket leagues and ladders are available in badminton, squash and tennis. Free to Gold and Silver members; or Bronze pay per activity rates apply.

SoccerZone SoccerZone is the campus based five-a-side football competition. Five leagues are run every Friday between 12pm to 5pm at our outdoor facilities. University sports scholarships The University of Kent is committed to delivering sporting excellence and is proud to offer scholarships to students with outstanding sporting ability. Kent Sport will work with those awarded a scholarship on a programme of general fitness training and physiotherapy support in association with their formal training and development. University general sports scholarships The University has a fund which supports numerous awards between £300 and £5,000. You must demonstrate a high level of performance in, and a commitment to, your sport. You must have played at county level or equivalent and be aspiring to national level. Scholarships are normally only allocated to students competing in major national sports which are well represented at the University in the BUCS leagues. The J&K Huntley Scholarship (Cricket) This scholarship is worth up to £2,500 per year and is offered in partnership with Kent County Cricket Club. Applicants must be free and willing to register and play for Kent CCC. If and when called upon to play for a county side, appearances will be rewarded by the payment of match money. Rugby scholarships In partnership with Canterbury Rugby Club, the University offers a scholarship for one of the first team players of up to £2,000 per year. The

criteria are for the recipient to be a 1st team player at Canterbury Rugby Club and play for the University in the BUCS tournament. The selection for the scholarship is made by Canterbury Rugby Club. Hockey scholarships The University offers hockey scholarships of up to £2,000 in partnership with Canterbury Ladies’ Hockey Club, Canterbury Mens' Hockey Club, Holcombe Hockey Club, Old Bordenians Hockey Club and Maidstone Hockey Club. You must be able to represent both the University and one of the clubs’ 1st teams. Christian Skogeby, Kent Sport Scholar of the Year for 2013-2014.

The David James Boxing Scholarship This scholarship is awarded in memory of former Director of Sport and national boxing coach, the late David James. It is designed to support selected boxers to ensure they achieve their potential. In partnership with John Horton, the University offers a scholarship of £250 to £2,250 per year.

Vice-Chancellor’s Cup The VC’s cup is an inter-departmental staff competition for all abilities, which runs throughout the year. A variety of sports and challenges take place including: dodgeball, school sports day, rounders, bat and trap, racket sports and a pub quiz. The Cup

enables staff to get active and meet other members of staff in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Staff introductory offer The University of Kent staff introductory sports card is given to new members of staff at the Staff Induction Fair run by HR. It allows new members of staff the opportunity to try out the sports facilities at the Canterbury campus five times absolutely free. New staff wishing to join can benefit from a 10% discount. Kent Sport annual Old Boys/Girls weekend Previously played between current and alumni inter college football teams in a five-a-side format. This event has run since 2012, and more recently netball has been introduced. Students have returned from as far as Dubai to participate. This year the sports development team will introduce

Frequently Asked Questions What is the difference between Gold and Silver membership? Gold membership offers access to the fitness suite throughout our opening hours. Silver membership offers access to the fitness suite weekdays between 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm, 9am to 11am Saturdays and 10am to 12pm Sundays.

Do I need to activate my membership identification card before I can use the facilities?

Do I need to book into the studio classes?

You will need to complete a Kent Sport orientation, which incorporates your fitness suite induction, before using the facilities and these are bookable at reception.

Classes do not have to be booked in advance but it is advisable as space is limited and they often fill up quickly.

Can I book a fitness consultation? If I am a member of a student club do I have to join Kent Sport as well? If your club uses Kent Sport facilities then yes, membership is required.

Who can access the Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic? The clinic is open to students, staff and the wider community. Please refer to page 7 for more information.

What happens if I forget my membership identification card? You will be refused entry if you do not have your membership identification card with you. We have a strict no card no entry policy.

Do you have personal trainers in the gym? Our fully qualified fitness staff are on hand to offer advice, programmes and consultations to meet your requirements, including personal training.

Yes, we offer fitness and nutrition advice and guidance. Members can book an initial fitness consultation at reception. Consultations are with a member of the fitness team to determine an exercise path. For prices see www.kent.ac.uk/sports or ask at the Kent Sport reception.

How far in advance can I book courts, classes and other facilities? Gold and Silver members can book up to seven days in advance. Bronze members can book three days in advance. Book at reception or using the online booking system at www.kent.ac.uk/sports.


What should I do if I cannot attend a class that I have booked? If you are unable to attend a class, and you booked by phone, you must cancel your booking by emailing sportstudio@kent.ac.uk no later than 30 minutes prior to the class start time. Online bookings must be cancelled online by the member that made the booking. Your membership account will be limited until outstanding fines for each ‘no show’ are paid if this procedure is not followed.

Are rackets, balls and other sports equipment available for hire? Kent Sport membership includes use of rackets, basketballs, netballs and footballs without additional charge. Items such as shuttlecocks, table tennis, squash and tennis balls can be purchased at reception. See poster in reception for prices.

Kent Sport public members can use the visitor parking behind the Sports Centre or at the Pavilion and claim a refund from reception. Kent Sport staff members can use their usual campus parking permit.

Do you have a swimming pool? No, but there are pools within a ten-minute walk of the University. Kent Sport intends to develop a swimming pool in the future. If you would like to support this venture, please visit www.kent.ac.uk/sports/p100.

What student sports clubs are available? Student clubs are run by Team Kent, part of Kent Union. A list of clubs is available online at www.kent.ac.uk/sports.

Who can apply for a sports scholarship? Sports scholarships of between £300 to £5,000 are available to elite sportsmen and women from any sport who compete (at least) at county level or equivalent. Students must commit to representing the University of Kent in BUCS competitions and preferably play for teams based on the Canterbury campus.

Do I need to book a court or pitch? Yes. Synthetic pitches and playing fields and other activities can be booked via reception in person, or by calling 01227 823 623.

Can I bring a guest? Gold and Silver members may bring a guest to attend an activity with them for just £6 – a fantastic opportunity to try the array of facilities on offer before taking a membership.

What parking is available at Kent Sport? There is parking available both at the Sports Centre and the Pavilion.
