THE NEWSLETTER OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF INDIANA AND KENTUCKY / SUMMER 2017 FIRST ISSUE OF THE 2018 FISCAL YEAR

CEO CORNER

As I take the helm of the amazing organization that is Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky (PPINK), I recognize that we are in the midst of a revolution. This seismic shift is shaping everything PPINK does, from providing high-quality health care to navigating the political landscape to communicating with supporters, and more.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF INDIANA AND KENTUCKY President and CEO Christie L. Gillespie Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Gatzmer Vice President of Education, Training and Human Resources Judi Morrison Vice President of Patient Services Lynne Bunch

As with any bold movement, ours is fueled by activists who are challenging our leaders to be unapologetic champions for the rights of all people. We have to be on the front lines, spreading the message that reproductive freedom is social justice and that empowering people to control their health care decisions is fundamental and essential. I am grateful for the trailblazers who came before me and I am humbled at the task ahead of me: the task of shaping a world where empowered people continue to build upon the legacy that reproductive rights are human rights. Because at PPINK, we provide care. No matter what.

Vice President of Public Policy, Strategy and Compliance Patti Stauffer

CELEBRATIONS

Mike Hot-Pence 1

Impersonator Mike Hot-Pence brought his short-

shorts to Indianapolis to celebrate Vice President

(and former Indiana Gov.) Mike Pence’s birthday on June 7. With Hot-Pence’s help, we raised over $1,500 for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Indiana and Kentucky (PPAIK)!

Storytelling in New Orleans 2

In May, patient advocates from across the South

spoke at Standing Strong: An Evening of Storytelling with Planned Parenthood. Two patient advocates

from Kentucky shared their stories at this event in New Orleans! StoryCorps 3

Several Bloomington health center staff members had the opportunity in June to participate in StoryCorps. StoryCorps is a project where individuals and

community partners record conversations and stories together. These stories may air on local or national NPR stations!

Education in Eastern Kentucky

PPINK Educator and Appalachia native Katricia

teens in the Kentucky River District. We’re excited to

Hoosiers and Kentuckians say NO to Trumpcare As Republicans in Congress compiled bill after bill

in an effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act, PPAIK

volunteers and staff fought back with calls, rallies, and actions. In late July, Planned Parenthood supporters

once again stopped what would be the worst policy for women in a generation.

A series of Senate votes defeated several versions of

Affordable Care Act repeal, culminating in a dramatic moment at nearly 2 a.m. on July 28. Republican Senators Susan Collins, John McCain, and Lisa

Murkowski joined the Democratic caucus in voting no, preventing repeal from gathering the 50 votes it needed to proceed.

The fight to protect our patients, particularly people with low incomes and women of color, is not over,

but our voices are powerful. Every day that advocates block repeal, over eight thousand patients across the country receive care at Planned Parenthood health centers. We will never stop fighting to ensure that

these doors stay open. Because of supporters like you, they will.
