Our theme this year — “Your Legacy: Impacting Future Generations”— is both relevant and timely. As we pursue new ways to improve educational excellence and support the development of young minds, we are certainly aspiring to build a strong legacy that will hopefully spur benefits for years to come. The Foundation Board of Trustees is firmly committed to supporting and enhancing the university’s ability to attract and retain highly talented students and faculty to engage in transformative research and academic instruction, and to make visible capital improvements to the campus community. With your continued support, we are confident that we can move Tennessee State University forward into a bold and bright future. GM partnership
enhances academics, opens up opportunities
GM was named “Corporate Supporter of the Year” for the College of Engineering. The company sponsored the college’s visit to the Chevrolet Volt Production Facility in Michigan and was hosted by the GM-TSU Undergraduate Recruitment team, led by Devon Blue, a 2000 TSU graduate.

A company known for its global leadership in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets is doing more than producing top vehicles, they are also supporting the next generation of innovators.
Dr. S. Keith Hargrove, dean of the College of Engineering, said GM has long recognized that an investment in STEM education prepares a work force pool for developing tomorrow’s innovative products in transportation.
General Motors Company, a long-time partner of Tennessee State University, has been a dedicated corporate supporter of education initiatives in the Colleges of Business and Engineering as they prepare world-class engineers, design and business talent to meet the growing needs of a more technologically-driven industry.
“In the College of Engineering, GM has played a role in student development with a design project for an Electric Go-Kart. The company has also provided scholarships for retention, and has worked with faculty to develop a Renewable Energy Laboratory to examine solutions for alternative fuels and products for electric vehicles,” Hargrove said. “We are proud to partner with GM, and excited about their continued commitment to engineering education at TSU.”
Kevin Williams, a 1982 alumnus of Tennessee State University and president and managing director of General Motors of Canada Limited, has been influential in recognizing the academic excellence and service efforts of his alma mater and the highly-trained students matriculating through the business and engineering programs. The company was also honored at the Foundation’s scholarship gala last year. “We were proud to recognize GM as one of our outstanding supporters during our scholarship gala,” said Betsy Jackson, executive director of the TSU Foundation. “The support from GM has assisted many students in achieving their educational aspirations in the College of Business and College of Engineering.”
Dr. Tilden Curry, dean for the College of Business, said GM has provided numerous scholarships, expert speakers and supported program enhancements in the college which has been a tremendous benefit to business students. “The College of Business has benefitted tremendously from a close working relationship with General Motors for many years,” Curry said. “As an active recruiter of talented students, many business students have launched their careers at this major corporation. Mr. Kevin Williams is a great example of a highly successful career at GM by a graduate of the College of Business.”

There’s something sweet about Nashville-based The Cupcake Collection and it’s not just those delectable miniature cakes made for one. This family bakery has mixed up a treat in the form of scholarship support that’s helping Tennessee State University students satisfy their appetites for an education. The small business began its support when former Miss TSU Shawn Montgomery (‘10) spoke to owner Mignon Francois about the financial needs of TSU students. Montgomery’s concerns morphed into the creation of “TSU Tuesday” at The Cupcake Collection, featuring a special blue velvet cupcake on this designated day with a portion of proceeds going toward student scholarships. “Shawn stayed on top of me about TSU and I couldn’t let her do something and I not do anything,” said Francois, a New Orleans native. 4
“We created a campaign for one academic year and raised $1,800 for TSU’s scholarship fund,” she continued, adding how supportive TSU people are of the university. In only its third year of business, The Cupcake Collection has become a staple in the historic Germantown community in North Nashville. Each week, the small business bakes up hundreds of cupcakes in its signature flavors of carrot cake, chocolate, red velvet, strawberry, sweet lemonade, sweet potato and wedding cake. Francois, also a graduate of a Historically Black College/University, has welcomed TSU students to work at her bakery. About a dozen students have joined her small operation and have become her “extended family,” she said. In addition to supporting TSU, Francois has expanded her effort to promote education and support students by establishing a mentorship program. The Cupcakes for College Tour is a program that exposes high school
“This tour has traveled from Nashville to New York City stopping in dozens of cities as we sell cupcakes and promote education,” she said, adding she always wanted to establish a scholarship fund for the education of young people. She continued, “I am a product of a HBCU and completely believe in that educational experience. There was something I received there [at a HBCU] that I didn’t get at other places.” Francois said that while her efforts have started out small, she realizes it only takes a first step to begin making a difference, and she plans to continue her support of TSU. “I don’t think we understand how far a little bit will go for people,” she said. “Just think if 25 people gave $25, who knows, that could be the difference in keeping someone in college. We are the beginning of a heritage that’s still graduating first generation college students. “I plan to continue our support of TSU and to give on purpose and strategically to help as many students as possible,” Francois said.

Selva Ibrahim says TSU was ‘the right decision’

Selva Ibrahim epitomizes Tennessee State University’s motto of “Think.Work.Serve.” Ibrahim has ignited her tenacity to learn and surpass circumstances with determination and passion, and has excelled academically. Throughout her matriculation at TSU, Ibrahim has been the recipient of several scholarships from the TSU Foundation. These awards have allowed the Republic of Turkey native to spend more time concentrating on her coursework than paying for books and fees. “The scholarships I’ve received have indeed been a great asset to my education,” Ibrahim said. “I didn’t have to stress about money. I had comfort in knowing everything was taken care of.” The senior psychology major continued, “It has been a tremendous honor and joy to receive scholarships throughout college. I am filled with gratitude and appreciation.” Ibrahim, who has been a resident of Nashville, Tenn. for 20 years, was born in Turkey. Her family is from Kurdistan, a small country in Northern Iraq. Ibrahim’s family came to the United States after becoming refugees in 1991. Ibrahim is the first of eight siblings to attend college, and has remained on the Dean’s List consecutively and as a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. She said her decision to attend Tennessee State University was “the right decision.” After graduation, Ibrahim hopes to pursue a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Her plans are to one day work in the field of neuropsychology, a specialized study focusing on the structure and function of the brain as they relate to specific psychological processes and behaviors. “I love that TSU has a great family atmosphere and is a kind community,” Ibrahim said. “I know I made the best decision for my future by attending.” Your Legacy: Impacting Future Generations • TSU F oundation R eport 2010-2011

Watts gives despite not calling it alma mater

After 27-plus years as a law enforcement official patrolling the streets of Chicago, retired police officer Stephen A. Watts says he has witnessed firsthand how poor decisions lead young people down the wrong path, including jail, and even early graves. The harsh realities of street life are just one reason Watts believes education is so important.

An academically-gifted honor student, Pamela received offers from top-tier schools such as Penn State, the University of Miami, the University of Illinois and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., before her father convinced her to give TSU a try. In 2003, she earned her B.S. in Architectural Engineering.
It’s something he’s instilled in his daughters, and it’s something he preaches to other young people often.
“These were pretty prominent schools but very expensive,” Watts said, adding he had to twist his daughter’s arm to get her to look at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). “It was more of me pushing her and asking her, ‘how about going to a black school?’”
With no previous ties to Tennessee State University, Watts credits a high school teacher
He continued, “So many people assume black schools [HBCUs] are not up to par. That’s the biggest challenge; that, and the financial aspect.” According to Inside Higher Ed, alumni (25.7 percent) and foundation (28.6 percent) gifts make up the majority of contributions. Non-alumni giving comprises 18.6 percent of all gifts, followed by corporations (16.6 percent), other organizations (9.4 percent) and religious organizations (1 percent). Watts is making a difference and his major gifts have helped to fund scholarships through the TSU College of Engineering Alumni Endowment. Prior to his daughter attending TSU, Watts had no known institutional ties to the university. He had never been to campus or did not really know anyone who had. He decided continuing to give back would be part of his mission to ensure other academically-prepared students, who did not have the money for school, could benefit from a TSU education. “I felt it was my obligation to give back,” Watts said. “Just talking about it is not going to do it. You have to get down in the trenches.”

Determination, perseverance and Volkswagen

Allen Wells, like many of his fellow full-time students at Tennessee State University, must select the right courses, study hard and follow instructions to complete his course work on time.
Wells did not have too far to go. After searching online, he discovered a Volkswagen Scholarship announcement for interested students with a 3.0 GPA or better. He applied and was selected.
But unlike some others, Wells is also self-supporting and must maintain a job and pay his own bills.
“This was a great relief and I am very grateful to Volkswagen and TSU,” Wells said. “If I had not received this scholarship I would have to work more hours to be able to afford my fees. It has been very helpful.”
“It is very difficult to focus as a full-time student,” Wells said. “You are constantly worrying about your fees or paying your bills while carrying a full load of class work. I feel for others who are in the same boat.” Wells, a senior architectural engineering major from Jackson, Miss., is a non-traditional student, with no other source of support except a low-paying job at Toys ‘R Us. He came to TSU three years ago, after earning an associate’s degree from Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss. He sat out a year before moving to Nashville.

Wells, who graduates in December 2012, plans to sit for his professional engineering license. His goal is to work for the federal government or abroad as an architectural engineer. The Mississippi native says his TSU experience has been rewarding.
“I had not reached my full potential in terms of education. I felt a four-year degree in my chosen field was the only way out and TSU was the place,” said the 25-year-old Wells. “I heard and read a lot about the engineering program here and was determined.”
“I always wanted to attend a Historically Black College and University, and choosing TSU was the right decision,” Wells said. “Like any other school we have our problems, but there are just too many caring people at this school who are always willing to help.”
Wells enrolled with funds he had saved, but keeping up with fees, boarding and other costs would soon become a problem, he said. “I had to find a way because I was not going to drop out,” he said.
Wells added he will recommend TSU to anyone looking for “a good college” to attend. “I have had a wonderful experience here,” he said.

Exxon matching gift program makes leadership opportunity possible for TSU students 18 students selected for 10th annual Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute The Tennessee State University Honors program has an active parent and ExxonMobil to thank for providing the needed resources that allowed 18 outstanding students the opportunity to attend the 10th annual Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute. The trip, nearly derailed due to funding deficiencies, was handed new life when the generous support of an Honors Program parent and ExxonMobil executive stepped up to the plate with a personal contribution leading to a corporate match sending students on their way. “ExxonMobil supports programs that encourage students to take an active interest in pursing higher education, especially in careers in the math and science fields. We support professional development of highly qualified teachers and promote involvement of women and minorities in these subjects,” said Byron Williams, project execution and OBO manager for ExxonMobil Production Company in Houston, Texas. “I believe Tennessee State University has programs that are in line with the company mission.” Williams’ personal support of $4,000 was matched three-to-one by ExxonMobil through their Corporate Match Program. The company’s Educational Matching Gift Program is intended to encourage giving to higher education by ExxonMobil employees, retirees and surviving spouses. Each calendar year, an eligible donor may have up to $7,500 in gifts to U.S. colleges and 10
universities and to certain consortia of minority colleges and universities matched by the ExxonMobil Foundation. The matching ratio is $3 for every $1 contributed by the individual.

Williams, whose daughter Meagan Williams is a senior health sciences major at TSU and member of the Honors program, said she found the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute to have “an excellent reputation in exposing future young leaders to the possibilities of what the future holds.” The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) hosts its annual four-day leadership training institute for TMSF scholarship recipients and member institutions. The institute is designed to enhance the students’ experience by helping them bridge their academic achievements with necessary and meaningful skill sets for the corporate marketplace, academia and government opportunities. “The conference gave us insight on how to build our leadership skills and to network with professionals. It was beneficial to our personal development and made

us realize that we have opportunities at TSU that we sometimes take for granted.”

Warren Dean V, a Nashville senior majoring in pre-med/biological science, said attending the leadership institute was a great opportunity for exposure. “When attending this leadership conference, it exposed me to other areas of corporate America beyond my realm and helped me to grow an understanding of how the world works outside of medicine,” said Dean, who has aspirations of becoming a doctor. “It helped me to connect the dots between successful business models if I decide to run my own clinic one day or work in health care administration. “When companies, such as Exxon, Led by Dr. William Latham, TSU students participate in give to the TSU Foundation it enables 10th Annual Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute. us to develop as students. We have opportunities to find internships, to prepare for jobs and to have a positive impact in the community after graduation.” The College Fund visits more than 40 campuses to interview students to attend the Institute. College Fund representative, Mr. Scott Lilly, selected all 18 students who interviewed from Tennessee State University due to their exceptional leadership development and commitment to the university. This is unprecedented in regards to participation at the institute over the past six years. Scholars from 47 member schools and over 600 students attend the Institute for an intensive program including workshops on career planning, interviewing skills, and resume writing, as well as financial and credit management workshops. In addition to the leadership training, the scholars are provided interview opportunities with corporate partners and are honored at an awards gala ceremony. Dr. William U. Latham of the University Honors program said, “We view this opportunity as one of the most important experiences in the leadership development of our students at the university. The seminars and workshops are excellent in delivering relevant and meaningful skill set development to our students, particularly as they are delivered by outstanding leaders from across the country.”

Hinton joins TSU Foundation Board of Trustees Wade A. Hinton serves as corporate counsel for Volkswagen Group of America for its Chattanooga Operations. His duties include providing legal counsel and project management for issues related to the construction and operation of the newly constructed manufacturing facility. Prior to joining Volkswagen, Hinton was an attorney with the law firm of Miller & Martin PLLC. Hinton is very active in his home community and currently serves as a board member for the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, board member and cofounder of STAND, a commissioner for the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission, board member for the Friends of the Festival and is a board member for the Tennessee State University Foundation. Hinton is also a member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga. Hinton has been recognized as the Chattanooga Bar Association’s “Young Lawyer of the Year,” The Chattanooga Times Free-Press “Forty Under 40” and Tennessee NAACP’s “45 Under 45,” among other awards. He is a German Marshall Fellow and a graduate of Leadership Chattanooga and the Tennessee Bar Association Leadership Law program. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., he received his B.A. in Philosophy from Emory University and his J.D. from the University of Memphis School of Law. Hinton also studied at Central European University in Budapest, Hungary.
