Hello readers and welcome! Since I last wrote, I’ve enjoyed a fabulous day out with my husband and friends – messing about on the river! My husband often wonders what to get me for my birthday (I can imagine that a lot of readers have a similar dilemma when buying for their spouse or partner). We’ve been married 18 years and each year it becomes more and more difficult knowing how to surprise each other. Well, last year Roy surpassed himself and bought me a voucher for a day’s self-drive boat hire on the River Trent for the two of us and up to 10 friends. Due to lots of weekend commitments last summer, I decided to hang fire and book the day out for this year instead. And what a day it was! I decided that I’d give the day a nautical theme and everyone was asked to wear a nautical item or bring a nautical accessory along with them. We ‘mustered’ at 9am in Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire on the banks of the River Trent and boarded our boat for the day. After a quick run-through from Nigel the friendly owner of Gunthorpe Leisure Cruises, we were on our way! We certainly attracted some attention, and I’m starting to realise that there is a slightly crazy side to my close circle of friends! Some of them were completely unrecognisable! There was Popeye, Captain Birdseye (pictured), a couple of pirates … and of course, pirates aren’t pirates without a parrot, so yes, there was even a human-sized parrot (aka Roy, my husband!) And if that wasn’t enough … the prize for the best-dressed went to my friend Jane, who had made her own jelly fish costume! The weather was perfect – blue sky, hot and sunny. All in all, it was a brilliant day and one that I think will become an annual fixture in the diary! Let’s hope we see the same blue skies seen on this picture over the school holidays!

Captain Birdseye (aka my friend Mathew Wainwright!)

Money Matters: Retirement Incomes On many occasions clients bring details of their retirement incomes which show usually (but not exclusively), a husband using his entire personal income tax allowance of £10,600p.a. on his pension and his spouse with the same allowance that is barely used at all. It is still typical (even today) that a man’s pension pot is significantly more in value than his wife’s. Despite all of the recent pension reforms, it is still not possible to transfer pensions to a spouse who may have unused allowances. However, for those not yet retired, it may be possible for a spouse to use more of her personal allowance by receiving the growth on her partner’s pension fund herself by allocation. In some cases the husband can choose to allocate the growth to her, should he wish. To make this clearer, envisage a married couple where the husband has a pension fund of £300,000 and a spouse with little or no pension fund entitlement whatsoever. Let’s assume they have 10 years until they plan to draw the pension benefits. Traditionally, this scenario could result in the husband commuting his fund for a taxable income that exceeds his personal allowance (and subject to income tax at his highest marginal rate), where his spouse has little or no income to offset her personal allowance. If we also assumed compound investment returns of 4% p.a. compound, his fund could be worth £444,073 ten years from now. If he then converts this into taxable income and perhaps along with his

state pension could result in significant income tax, whilst his wife has little income and certainly insufficient to fully use her personal allowance. But a smart planning move may be to transfer his fund to a pension scheme that can allow the growth to be allocated to his wife. This could enable her to grow her own pension portfolio, rather than to add to his own £300,000. This may result in better use of both the husband and wife’s personal allowance in retirement. Of course there are other ways to fully utilise each partner’s allowances. Equalising ownership of assets such as savings and investments can result in better use of personal allowances where possible. Additionally, there is a new £5,000 of Personal Savings Allowance on top of the £10,600 for people earning less than £15,600p.a. This extra can only be claimed against income in the form of interest from savings, but nevertheless used wisely there are ways to save income tax that may not be well known.

The Better Life Lawn to be Wild Cutting the grass seems such a waste of time to me. Just like fingernails, toenails and hair (if you’re lucky), it’ll only grow back again. True, it’s a valuable addition to the compost, but that’s about it. Whereas, one of the things I love most about the garden as a whole is its adaptability. Yes, it’s an ecosystem and a natural habitat, but it’s also something more: a blank canvas just waiting for my often ill-thought-out ideas. Bored with grass? (And, by grass, I mean patches of grass among the swathes of dandelions.) There’s a remedy for that – simply put down bark chips. Worried that the bees and butterflies need more encouragement to stay and thrive? Easy peasy – grow more flowers and grow a variety to suit different insects. And while you’re about it, make sure you provide a shallow source of water so they can drink. We wanted to take the whole rural thing a stage further (no, not a tractor – it wouldn’t fit through the gate), and decided to create a meadow. Or rather, with our garden: a mini meadow.

case, instead of a disappointing car with a broken wheel, the surprise might be scarlet pimpernel, wild strawberries (Anne’s not keen – she says they take over), or dog violets. And even today we argue over speedwell v’s forget-me-nots in an identity parade. We haven’t gone entirely au naturel. Having previously installed a few raised beds, Anne opted for violas (Avril Lawson), geums (Mrs Bradshaw) and bellis. None of which explains the catmint we planted near the front gate, principally to see whether Porsha would appreciate it. Strangely, while she loved it when it was a mere kittenmint in the conservatory, she treats it with indifference now it’s out in the open. Not to worry though; if last year was anything to go by, she’ll love the next butternut squash plant. By Derek Thompson

First, I dug out a rough circle – and believe me, it was rough. Next, with the turf removed, we put down a layer of 50/50 soil and sharp sand. We brought in native wildflower seeds and some Flanders’ poppies, which came impregnated on paper rolls. Some judicious scissor work to patchwork the sections, soak with water and then another layer of soil and sand. Naturally, the cat supervised the proceedings, technically outranking Anne as chief observer. Porsha’s presence was also a timely reminder to put netting over the circle from the beginning. After that, it’s a case of occasional watering, watching and waiting. The seeds stir into life very quickly. Try as you might though, it’s nigh on impossible to stop the daisies from encroaching over the edges. Maybe they’re just arriving early to the party. The edges of the garden are largely wild (and some of the neighbours are probably furious); a rather fetching tangle of lords and ladies, buttercups and grasses, with seasonal appearances from bluebells, columbines, foxgloves and pulmonaria. We also have something we know as Mrs West, but have never been able to identify properly – so much for the power of the internet. The joy of having wild garden areas is the same sense of excitement as buying lucky bags as a child. Only, in this

Just a Thought... All the Small Things

celebrates everything, from the small to the mighty, with the same passion and enjoyment, the same self-worth and joy, and that, my friends, is exactly what we as adults are missing.

Sometimes we can all get a little bogged down by life. Whether it is finances, relationships, or work, there is usually something that we feel isn’t working for us. It struck me last week that we spend far too much time analysing these overarching themes in our life and as a result miss out on such a lot.

We forget the little triumphs that we accomplish each day. We don’t congratulate ourselves on cooking a meal, enjoying a book, remembering the shopping, texting a friend, walking the dog or even just getting from one end of the day to the other in one piece! We should. Simple as that. So the next time you feel you are falling down the rabbit hole, grab on to the last thing you did (even if that is taking the bin out), and shout “I DID IT!” You’ll feel better – Erin promises.

My two year old daughter, Erin, is a constant reminder of what joy there is in the world. She is developing at such a rate and this last month she has learned the phrase, ‘I did it!’ She delivers this sentiment with such vigour and pride, such energy and enthusiasm; it never fails to make me smile. The best thing though, is that she will say it after many things: from finishing a meal, to drawing a spider, kicking a football and everything in between. She

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not?? Last year, I did an outing to Carsington Water that continued on via Ashbourne to Derby and then home. I have been asked to rework the day coming straight back from Carsington rather than going via Derby. This has become one of Barbara and my favourite outings. Coffee and a scone at the visitor centre, then a gentle walk by the reservoir watching the birds or boats. On a nice day... magic! As usual, this outing is free to bus pass holders. Passengers without a bus pass should buy a ‘Derbyshire Wayfarer’ ticket on the first bus which covers everything.

This is Your Bus service No.111, which is coming from Matlock and going to Ashbourne. It will pass you from the left, turn round in Wirksworth, and come back to pick you up. We arrive at Carsington Visitor Centre at 11:05. To return to Matlock, catch the 111 again from the same stop this time at 13:26, getting back to Matlock Railway Station for 13:55. Your Bus service 140 leaves from the railway station at 14:02 to get to Alfreton at 14:53, or you could spend an hour in Matlock and come back to Ripley on Your Bus service 141 at 15:02. From Alfreton, any Derby-bound The Nines, Red Arrow or 148 will return you to Ripley. The Nines are at 5, 20, 35 and 50 minutes past the hour. The Red Arrow is at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour, and the 148 is at 50 minutes past the hour. People who might be interested in the buses used are invited to try my transport ‘blog’ on http://railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Getting there! We start with Trent Barton’s 6.3 service to Belper at 9:32. It leaves from outside the old Hippodrome. Leave that bus at Belper bus station where our next bus is Trent Barton’s 6.1, which departs at 10:18. The bus is going to Bakewell but we are only going to Wirksworth. Travelling via Shottle crossroads and up the beautiful Ecclesbourne valley, it should get you there at 10:40. Leave this bus in Wirksworth market place (the bus stop shows Harrison Drive). The next bus will collect you from the same stop in 10 minutes’ time.

Travel Rio de Janeiro: Iconic Peaks On the western shore of the Atlantic, Rio enjoys a superb location in a spectacular bay dotted with over 130 islands. Pristine sands meander around the coast, mountains rise all around and two mighty peaks compete for some of the most breathtaking views on the continent. At the heart of the city, Corcovado, the ‘hunchback’, soars 706 metres above the Tijuca rainforest, widely regarded as the world’s largest urban National Park. There are streams and waterfalls, wildlife and tropical plants and a rack railway climbing through lush scenery, with barely a whisper, to the top of Corcovado. Stretching for 3.8km, it was inaugurated in 1884 by Emperor Pedro II. In the footsteps of Albert Einstein, Barack Obama and two Popes, 300,000 visitors come here every year to see the ‘Seventh Wonder’ of the modern world, accessed from the top station by 223 steps with unbeatable views, or lift and escalator. Even when the peak is shrouded in mist, it’s well worth the climb – for up on the platform, Christ the Redeemer greets you with a rare smile and arms outstretched, encompassing everyone in a divine blessing. Rising to 38 metres and built with reinforced concrete covered in soapstone, the statue was inaugurated in 1931, the work of celebrated French sculptor Paul Maximilien Landowski, in collaboration with Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. Following a lightning strike, a massive restoration programme was undertaken in 2010, involving 100 workers and some 60,000 pieces of stone from the original quarry. Today, with his finely pleated gown and shoulder length hair, the Christ stands as good as new, unperturbed by snap-happy visitors striking a similar pose, somewhat irreverently, at his feet. But up there, on a clear day, the panorama is as stunning as the iconic statue. The city is at

your feet, nestling in the valleys, stretching along glistening sands and around the lovely lagoon of Rodrigo de Freitas. The 13.3km bridge spans the vast Guanabara Bay and guarding the entrance, on the tip of a peninsula, is the dramatic Sugarloaf Mountain – so named for its shape in the heydays of the sugar trade. It’s just 396 metres high but for many visitors, it’s more impressive than the crowded Corcovado. There’s no railway on the sheer rocky slopes of the Sugarloaf, but two cable cars. The first one takes you up to Morro da Urca, a 220m outcrop where you feel the views couldn’t possibly get any better. But those who dare, head for the final near-vertical ride to the top. Up there, it’s a true bird’s eye view; the marina glistening far below, the city snaking around the coast fringed with white sands, the lush mountains and rocky peaks and myriad islands sprinkled around the bay. The ocean breeze clears the air and forested trails you never knew were there invite you to stroll in the shade and spot tropical birds and butterflies. In the late afternoon, the best place to be is on the open platform for one more unforgettable view of Rio in full daylight. Then, comes the most magical moment of all, when the last rays of the sun sweep across this amazing ocean and mountainscape and just a stone’s throw away, the mighty Corcovado turns to gold as the Redeemer smiles on one of the most beautiful cities on earth. Humour: What Makes Them Beautiful…? I am ever so slightly obsessed with One Direction. Not in a creepy way, you understand (in as un-creepy a way as it’s possible for a 32-year-old man to be unduly interested in a boy-band). I don’t actually listen to their music, or buy their merchandise, and I won’t be going out of my way to visit their waxworks at Madame Tussauds - but as a musical phenomenon, I find them completely fascinating. I should probably put this in a wee bit of context. A few months ago I secured a new writing contract providing gossip updates for a One Direction fan club. When I applied for the job, I didn’t know it was 1D (if you’re hip you call them 1D), but when I eventually found out the identity of the act in question I didn’t see it as any reason to turn down the contract. One Direction is a band and I am a musician and music writer. The fact that they happen to be aimed at teenage girls didn’t seem to me a valid reason to pass on a perfectly decent freelancing job. And so now, every day, I tap away on my computer about the world’s hottest boy-stars. Which older woman does Harry Styles currently have his eye on? I know the answer. Who do the bookies say is most likely to turn out to be ‘the gay one’? I know the answer. Which member of One Direction has the worst flatulence? I know the answer (it’s Niall, by the way). What really happened with Zayn? I know the answer. I know all their surnames. I know which football teams they played for at school. I know that Harry Styles worked in the W Mandeville bakery in Holmes Chapel before going on X Factor. Indeed, I am fast approaching the point at which the Mastermind chair - special subject Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis and Zayn – is easily within my grasp. And this has led me somewhere unexpected. I find myself experiencing just a teaser of what it must

be like to be an adolescent caught in the grip of 1D fever. They play on my mind all the time. ‘Should I have joined a boy-band when I was 19?’ I find myself wondering, for the first time ever. How would I have fared at the X Factor boot camp? You must understand this is quite unusual for me, as I’ve been a professional musician for ten years now and have always maintained that it’s about the music, not the fame (just as well in my case). I still think that… it’s just now there is also the teeniest part of me that would like to be in One Direction for a day. So there you have it. I shunned boy-bands when I was a teenager because I wanted to be cool. I shunned boy-bands when I was in my twenties because, well, obviously I did. But now I am embracing them - or at least, this particular one - and I felt it was time for me to come out of the closet. So, I love One Direction. Not in a creepy way (that warrants a second mention), but… well… just because they’re, like, SO SUPER AWESOME, and OHMYGODHARRYSTYLESHASTHEBESTHAIR etc. Please don’t tell anyone. Music Scene: Discotech I caught up with Derby’s Discotech residents to find out about their monthly parties and Derby’s house music scene... Tell us a little bit about Discotech... We’re essentially a bunch of good mates who decided to put on our own night, and three years in it looks like people quite like what we do. All the original Discotech residents were DJing around Derby and we decided we wanted to do our own thing. We all played a similar sort of house music and were into having a laugh and partying together anyway; putting a night on was just an extension of that. We’re also pleased to have added Lopaski to our residents’ roster. The guy is a brilliant DJ – his productions have already had coverage on Radio 1 and have been supported by many renowned artists, including DC10 residents, Apollonia. We’ve also been really lucky to have some of our favourite DJs play for us, bringing many artists to Derby for the first time including Andre Crom, Dale Howard, Sonny Fodera, Adam Shelton, Nail, Acid Mondays to name a few. A lot of these artists are playing in some of the biggest and best clubs around the world on a regular basis, so it’s great to be able to bring them to Derby and inject some life into the scene here. From this, our residents have played at many clubs around the country including EGG LDN, Zoo Project Festival, FACE, The Rainbow Rooms and more. What sort of evening can be expected at typical Discotech night? Good house music and fun, light-hearted parties. We certainly don’t take ourselves too seriously; it creates a better atmosphere that way. As long as a night has great music, a top location and a great atmosphere, you’re in for a winner! It’s good to see that, three years in, we have a family of people who go to the party religiously, month in month out. It really does create a special vibe for Derby and we’re proud of that.

a meeting about moving back to Shakespeare, and were pretty much agreed on dates for restarting when Mark, the owner, mentioned the space at the back of the White Horse. As soon as we looked out there we were sold, and the White Horse became our new home! I can honestly say, in my opinion, it is Derby’s nicest terrace venue. Come down and see for yourself. WANT TO BE SEEING FEWER OF THESE?

How easy is it to get DJs to play? It’s all down to budgets really. We try and bring in people we consider to be respected, quality artists. If we like their music and can afford to book them, we will! You recently moved to a new venue, was that easy to book? We found the venue completely by accident! Shakespeare, where we used to run Discotech, shut down last year. We had done a party at Saddlers in the meantime but when the bar was taken over it decided to go in a different musical direction, doing its nights in house. By this point, Shakespeare had been reopened by the owners of the White Horse. We went down to the White Horse for

Recipe

Veggie Bean Burgers Packed with flavour these burgers will be enjoyed by both meat-eaters and vegetarians. For a lovely nutty texture replace the sweetcorn with 100g chopped walnuts. Makes 8 Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling time Ingredients: 3 tbsp olive oil 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1 carrot, peeled and grated 2 tsp chilli powder 2 x 400g cans mixed bean salad, drained and rinsed 100g canned sweetcorn, drained 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1 large egg 1 tbsp lime juice 4 tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or parsley) Toasted burger buns, baby spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes, to serve Method: Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, spring onions and carrots and fry, stirring, for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder. Tip all the beans into a large bowl and roughly mash with a fork. Stir in the onion mixture along with the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Divide and shape the mixture into 8 burgers. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Heat the rest of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown (you may need to do this in two batches so add a little more oil, if needed). Drain on kitchen paper then serve in toasted burger buns with spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes.

The uncooked burgers freeze well, just place on a lined baking tray and freeze until solid then pack away into freezer bags. To cook from frozen, place the burgers on a lined baking tray, brush lightly with oil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6 until golden and piping hot.

Derbyshire Walking: Grassmoor, Williamthorpe Ponds and the Five Pits Trail. Supplied by Rob Bradford www.derbyshirewalking.co.uk Walk Area: Grassmoor Distance: 6 miles Start Point: Grassmoor Country Park Wolfie Pond OS Map: Explorer 269 Chesterfield and Alfreton 1:25000 Map Ref: SK 411 671 The Walk Parking: Free off-road Walk towards the car park entrance but rather Tea Shops: None

A very easy and interesting walk of six miles along disused railway bed, although it must be said that sections of this route may not be considered visually appealing. One of the big bonuses for this Start of the Five Pits Trail route is that it is effectively mud free, with hard surfaced paths throughout; you will probably spend more time avoiding piles of horse manure than dealing with mud! While not a truly circular walk, more an inverted speech bubble, you do end up back where you started from – passing beside and through numerous wildlife habitats along the way. Despite its length, this walk is friendly to both dogs and children throughout; to be honest I would go as far as saying it is pushchair friendly too.

than going left out onto the road, keep ahead and enter into the grounds of Grassmoor Country Park. Follow the path that runs parallel to the road signed ‘Five Pits Trail’ and pass under the road to join the track bed of the old railway line which now forms the trail. If, like me, you tend to be an early morning walker, the signs of fox (smell) around this bridge are quite obvious. Continue to follow the track bed for a little over half a mile, passing a bench overlooking a small pond, until it reaches a junction with another path of similar construction near an electricity pylon. Turn left and immediately ahead the path splits to the left and right; at this second junction keep left (both the left and right paths here are the Five Pits trail which makes the signage a little confusing). After a short distance, Wolfie Pond becomes visible to the right. Here there are benches and a picnic table to sit and enjoy the view. Continue along the trail through an area of woodland and under the B6039 then walk on through an industrial area to a point where the path splits; here keep right. Follow the trail again, this time with factory units to the right and woodland to the left; eventually the trail leaves the industrial units behind and Williamthorpe Ponds come into view to the right. Stay on the trail until a ‘steep slope’

Health, Beauty & Fitness warning is reached. I don’t think it is all that steep, but take care as you walk down the slope, around a wooden barrier and to a wide wooden bridge over a run-off stream from the ponds. At the junction of paths on the far side of the bridge, turn right and take the track signed ‘Holmewood wheelchair route’. As its name suggests, this track is well maintained and easy to walk. The track now follows the banks of Williamthorpe Ponds until a large factory unit looms ahead, seemingly blocking the way. Here the track turns left and effectively doubles back on itself, climbing away from the ponds. Continue up the slope through the woodland until the Five Pits Trail crosses the wheelchair route; at this, the path ahead becomes grassed rather than hard paved. Turn right and rejoin the Five Pits Trail, signed Holmewood. The trail soon leaves the woodland of Williamthorpe Nature Reserve to pass behind some houses, then bears left at the end of the final house to exit onto a road side. Turn right and cross both the road and the bridge ahead. On the far side of the bridge turn left to rejoin the trail which is now far narrower but still easy to walk. Continue along the path until it crosses another, far busier, road at the site of the former Heath Station. Cross this road and continue along the trail on the far side of the road through Holmewood Woodlands. Follow this section of the route for around half a mile, past playing fields and a smallholding, until it exits onto a third road at a pair of wooden gates and a low stile. Cross the road and again continue along the trail on the other side of the road. The route soon comes to another ‘steep slope’ warning sign, beyond which there is a path off to the right just before the trail dips to cross a stream. Take the path to the right (effectively cutting off the corner of where the route swings back towards Grassmoor). This section is quite short and soon rejoins the main trail near some picnic tables.

Picnic area on the Five Pits Trail

Turn right at the picnic tables and follow the Five Pits Trail once more for a little over half a mile until it reaches a fourth, and final, road. Cross the road and pick up the trail once more. Continue along the path for a further half a mile until Wolfie Pond reappears on the right. Just beyond Wolfie Pond, the trail arrives again at the staggered junction of paths walked near the beginning of the route. Turn left then right to pick up the section of the Five Pits Trail back to Grassmoor Country Park.

The way back to Grassmoor

From here it is a simple matter of following the trail for around three quarters of a mile, passing under the road bridge back to the car park and the end of the walk. We have taken reasonable steps to ensure that this walk is safe and achievable by walkers of a realistic level of fitness. The publisher accepts no responsibility for any injuries caused to readers whilst following the walk. Always wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Walk details correct at time of going to print.

Health, Beauty & Fitness

Hair and Beauty Matters I can scarcely believe that late summer’s here already, but here are my tips for keeping your skin and hair looking great throughout August and September:

Skin

I hope you have been exfoliating and getting your skin nice and smooth. We are all hopefully enjoying the sun when it makes an appearance, and skin needs a high factor sun cream to help prevent signs of aging. As we get older (especially those of us who love to sunbathe) we can develop age spots and the sun can also speed up the development of fine lines as it dries the skin – this is made even worse if you get sunburnt. So, always remember your face and neck, even if you’re just out and about. Ideally, use factor 30 - 50 sun cream. Vitamins E and C can also optimise your sun protection. These are powerful antioxidants which give you the best protection from the sun. Buying a foundation with SPF and 100% minerals will again help to prevent sun damage, and at the same time it will help to improve skin evenness and texture. Of course, you can get an easy tan by going to your local salon and having a spray tan, and this saves faffing with fake tan at home! The best way to maintain your tan is by exfoliating every 2-3 days and then applying a gradual build-up tan over the top. TOP TIP: Always use a mitt to apply any sort of cream/ gel tan so that it goes on streak free (don’t use your hands!).

Pretty Feet

It’s the time of year for sandals and flip flops, so with feet on display it’s important to keep them looking their best.

If you think you haven’t got time to pamper your feet, don’t worry – it’s quick and easy! Keep a pumice stone or rasp to do your heels in the shower then, once you’re out and dry, quickly pop some moisturiser on. It’s important to keep the moisture there when you’ve removed dead skin, so moisturise morning and night. Also, when feet are exposed all day they will naturally become drier (that’s why your feet don’t go as dry in winter, as socks keep the moisture in!). Finally, get a bright summer colour on your toes – neon colours and corals are very popular at this time of year.

Hair

You may have noticed the ‘pastel pops of colour’ trend this summer. There are some great hair chalks on the market, which just wash in and out. Be sure to do a bit of research first though and use a good brand to make sure they’re not going to stain your hair. Plaits are another big thing, and parting plaits are something a bit different. Add a special touch by hooking an earring into the plait, or by threading a bead onto a hair pin and carefully inserting into the plait, as shown. I hope you have found these tips useful. Watch out for my article in the next issue when we’ll be looking forward to autumn and preparations for the ‘C’ word!

Horsley Lodge Golf is one of those sports that strikes fear into those of us that don’t play. We think of stuffy clubhouses or strict dress codes, and then there is the cost of joining. Nowadays, however, all that is changing and a number of local clubs have dropped their joining fees and made it easier to become a member. Horsley Lodge is one of the area’s finest tests of golf, and this has attracted more top golfers than any other course in the county. However, to reach out to those who don’t want to pay a high joining fee, those who don’t currently play, or to those who want to learn to play, they have set up F1RST Golf Membership. There is NO JOINING FEE and the membership fee entitles you

to 16 rounds of golf and 7 lessons with their PGA professional. After that you can carry on as a member in whatever category you choose. Currently the club is also offering 25 FREE JOINING FEES in certain categories to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. The club was set up in 1990 by the Salt Family and is still owned and managed today by Richard and Malcolm Salt. Motoring

Motoring Honda Civic Type R If you’re going to spend five years in the wilderness sans any performance models, you’d better have one almighty bang in your back pocket when you return to the fray. Following a lengthy hiatus, Honda has launched the most eagerly-awaited performance car so far this year. Faithful disciples of Honda’s iconic Red Badge models number in their hundreds of thousands around the world – 400 of whom have already placed advance orders, largely sight unseen.

The Style Factory

The new Civic Type R looks exactly like a Type R should look. It is gloriously shouty, has a big mouth, brandishes a Kardashian-like rear and an XXL rear wing tuned for maximum downforce. Other aesthetics include double dual exhausts either side of a massive rear splitter, a big front splitter, flared wheel arches and the vents that adorn them.

The Inside Story

The front furniture is fabulous – probably the best road car seats I’ve sat in for a while, with really tall side bolsters offering excellent support. Other tactile elements are great too – an aluminium gear lever, shapely leather steering wheel and well-judged pedal weights. There’s plenty of headroom front and rear and the boot is huge, too.

Engines and Transmissions

The new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Earth Dreams i-VTEC turbo unit produces 228 kW at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from a lowly 2,500 rpm. It still uses the VTEC variable valve timing system, however. All of that brutal power is received by the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox only and a helical

limited-slip differential. Honda claims 0-100kph in 5.7 seconds and 269kph flat out. The front suspension now uses a strut arrangement with a bespoke ‘dual-axis’ design to reduce centre offset, reducing torque steer by an incredible 55 per cent. The Type R brakes are no-nonsense Brembo units and both performed exceptionally well on road and track. To the left of the grippy steering wheel is a button marked +R. This sports setting immediately changes all the dials in the car to fiery red. The result is a change in engine mapping for sharper performance and steering, stability assist to maximise grip, while adaptive damping is increased by a spine-shrinking 30 per cent.

The Drive

On public roads, throwing the Type-R into sweeping corners inspires confidence as every judder of grip is fed back into the wheel. Those adaptive dampers ensure that smaller bumps are shrugged off with an ease that defies the very low-profile tyres, although potholes and crusty surfaces still crash through the structure. Start to use the performance and the engine adopts a monotonous, booming drone that is neither pleasant nor inspiring. If you’re given an opportunity to take one of these onto the track, grasp it with both hands. You’ll discover a car that’s exceptionally racy but also very manageable and fairly forgiving. Steering is weighty but precise, with none of the expected twitchiness. Two versions are available – a standard model at £29,995 and a GT with additional equipment at £32,295. By way of comparison, the Golf R costs £30,820.

Summary

The new Honda Civic Type R is an extreme car and has been well worth the wait. Its target buyer will be someone who doesn’t welcome compromise – and who sports deep enough pockets to live with that decision. While unquestionably pricey, it is an utterly brilliant piece of automotive engineering. By Wayne Gorrett

Too much garden and not enough time for gardening? Some of you out there have very large gardens that you either don’t want or don’t need. Turn them into building plots, make some money, put your lawn mower away and put your feet up this summer…

Is it the right time? Most Local Authorities are short on housing supply – they need more sites with planning approval for houses. As the number of homeowners prepared to put their homes on sale is falling, extending an existing home is becoming increasingly attractive to many.

Many contractors are still quoting competitively, while a surge in re-mortgages, confirmed by the Council of Mortgage Lenders, suggests many homeowners could have raised finance for building work. So….if this type of project has been something you’ve been considering then take advantage of the free initial consultation offered by Pilkington Architecture.

Homes & Gardens

Book Reviews: Hooray for Hollywood! Summer is the time for the great cinematic blockbuster, but there are days when it’s way too nice to be stuck in a dark movie theatre. Why not get out the deckchair and read the book before seeing the film after dark? Seeing how some of these great novels paved the way for Hollywood, it’s no wonder they’ve made millions for the studios. Jurassic Park Michael Crichton We’ve just taken an ill-fated trip to Jurassic World this summer, but why not read the original and best? Michael Crichton wrote his cautionary tale about what happens when scientists mess around with dino-DNA way back in 1990, and the subsequent film made millions of children around the world believe that dinosaurs could roam the earth again. Throw in some Chaos Theory and some moral and ethical questions and you’re left with one extraordinary book that’s full of suspense and opportunities to roll your eyes and weep for the future. Jaws Peter Benchley This isn’t perhaps what you’d call ideal beach reading, but the suspense that Peter Benchley created in his 1974 novel of a great white shark terrorising a seaside resort is absolutely compelling. Focusing on the stories of the three men who are tasked with hunting and killing the killer shark, it’s tense, intense and a real nail-biter. ‘Jaws’ was a huge success, despite coming under attack from literary critics. It’s no Moby Dick, but it’s the very definition of a page-turner and you’ll be devouring the story, much like a giant, man-eating fish devours surfers. Psycho Robert Bloch In 1959, Robert Bloch wrote a book that would make us all morbidly fearful of so-called ‘Mummy’s Boys’. Inspired by a real-life murder case in Wisconsin, the novel was quickly snatched up by Hollywood, and Hitchcock brought the story of seriously disturbed Norman Bates to the silver screen. Middle-aged Norman runs the Bates Motel along with his domineering mother. Unwitting guest Mary Crane arrives at the motel, on the run having stolen $400,000 from her boss so she can marry her boyfriend and pay off his debts. But Norman’s momma is

40 40

still running the show, and she’s not too happy about Mary’s arrival. It will, most definitely, all end in tears. Disturbing and harrowing; if he still lives with his mum when you meet him, then run like the wind. The Firm John Grisham Grisham’s second novel was a hit of stratospheric proportions, so it was no surprise that Hollywood soon came a-knocking. Mitch McDeere is a hotshot lawyer in the making, but the Harvard graduate turns down offers from major firms in New York and Chicago to work for Bendini, Lambert and Locke based in Memphis. They offer him a deal he can’t refuse but it soon becomes apparent that it may have cost him a lot more than he anticipated. No one ever seems to leave ‘The Firm’, or least, no one seems to leave the firm alive. Gritty and gripping it will at least ensure that you read your contract through carefully in future. Lord of the Rings J. R. R. Tolkien Most wondered how on earth (or rather, how on Middle Earth) Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel could possibly be turned into a movie. Turns out, it was made into three. A sequel to ‘The Hobbit’, the novel expanded exponentially, and remains one of the best sellers of all time. The Dark Lord Sauron has created a ring to rule over all the other Rings of Power and bring him to reign over the whole of Middle Earth. What he hasn’t counted on is complications caused by a group of hobbits, along with some elves, and a wizard known as Gandalf. Complex and intricate it’s great to get lost in Tolkien’s world. If you can’t get to grips with it, you can always use it as a doorstop. The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins The most recent of the novels-to-film franchises is the story of Katniss Everdeen and her rise to fame in her District as two-time victor of the Hunger Games. What Hollywood likes more than one blockbuster movie, is three blockbuster movies…even four, as the third instalment has been split into two films. The books are gruesome and, though chances are you’ve already seen at least the first film, the novels go into excruciating detail of the bizarre world the teenagers, forced to fight to the death, have to endure. The third instalment in particular is pretty nasty. Read it with your feet up and a nice drink in hand, and try not to focus on the fact that it’s kids killing kids.

Gardening: Tropical Paradise As the summer’s end is, sadly, already not too far away, many of us will be wishing for that exotic holiday we never quite had. But you can recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead. The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing, and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two-week long trip! A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants, all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of the less hardy tropical-look plants and you will create that dense, lush look which spells tropical paradise. Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere, and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Indian shot plants, also known as the ‘cannas’ are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna Tropicana, or for a larger-than-life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves. If you want more than just foliage, the bulbous Eucomis bicolour has out-of-this world greenish yellow flower-heads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s Trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura), as Angel’s Trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot, it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring. Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look

great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines, or the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the ‘cup and saucer’ plant. Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. If you go to the garden centre, many statues and garden ornaments are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage, they help to add to the jungle-like atmosphere. There are plenty of tropical-effect plants to choose from including: tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads, citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) and bamboos. So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter... all you need now is a deck chair and a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray! Short Story The Lemonade War A heat haze sent the tarmac shimmering like a pool of spilt lemonade. Across the avenue, Lenny, aged eleven, faced Max, aged twelve. Kids peered from behind parked cars, bushes and picket fences, anticipating the stand-off that had been brewing all day. “You’ve lost, Lenny baby”, Max snarled. “Go home and cry to your mummy”. Lenny’s eyes smarted with grit. Though he was scared, he definitely wasn’t crying. He licked his cracked lips. “Maybe I have, maybe I haven’t”. He attempted an enigmatic smile, “or maybe I have one more card to play”. Max spat defiantly onto the dusty pavement, “you’ve got nothing”. He unscrewed his lemonade bottle with a dull fizz and took a swig. “I won the turf. It’s mine for the keeping”. Lenny feared Max might be right. He glanced at the stall on the end of his drive. It had been a good little weekend business while it lasted. Yesterday his dad had helped him make a sign ‘Lenny’s Lemons: homemade lemonade 15p’, and he had set up stall with just two packing crates. All the kids had paid a visit, and the coins had been rolling in. Not enough yet for a whole skateboard, but enough for the first two wheels. Lenny should have known trouble was brewing when Max had showed up yesterday and bought a cup of iced lemonade. For a boy of few words he’d certainly asked a lot of questions. Lenny had been flattered into letting his guard slip and it had cost him dearly. Max was older, cooler, and had his own mobile phone. And sure enough, today ‘Maximum Lemons’ opened up just across the street. Max’s lemonade, while no more homemade than Lenny’s, was selling for just 10p, and each cup came with a curly straw. Max had been doing a steady trade while Lenny’s lemonade had turned flat in the jug. “Lemonade doesn’t taste any better through a curly straw”, Lenny said at the top of his voice, “you’re all just hooked on a pointless gimmick”. Max hooked his thumbs through his belt loops. “Pathetic. Is that the card you were going to play?” he sniggered and turned away.

5252

“Not so fast Max”. Lenny took a deep breath, “I bet your mum bought the lemonade, the cups and the curly straws from the supermarket this morning, after you cooked up your little scheme to steal my customers”. Max looked blank for a moment. “So what if she did?” “I even bet she said you could pay her back out of the money you made”. Max, uncomfortable suddenly, glanced around at the curious eyes watching him. “Am I right?” Lenny said. The expression on Max’s face told Lenny all he needed to know. “It’s been a long day hasn’t it?” Lenny smiled, “you’ve worked hard haven’t you?” Max nodded, the sweat dripping down his forehead. The wind spun a curly straw across the street. Lenny bent to pick it up. “Just think of all the things you could have been doing Max. That hosepipe fight at number eight looked like fun”. Max shrugged, “Maybe, but at least I made loads of cash”. “Really?” Lenny said carefully. “Didn’t your mum tell you curly straws cost a pound for a packet of ten?” He straightened the straw with a snap and delivered the killer blow, “Maxi baby, you’ve not made a single penny all day”. Max may be older, may be cooler, may even have a mobile phone, but Lenny was better at maths. By Jackie Brewster

The Diary of a Local Mum Running for their lives... If you see something resembling a sweaty beetroot stumbling around the local streets over the next couple of months, it may well be me – doing my best impression of running. The briefest of glances will confirm to you that I’m not a natural athlete. I was always the kid who was ‘chosen’ last for sports teams at school (yes, they were lumbered with me). So, why am I putting myself through this, you may ask? Mid-life crisis? No, not quite yet anyway. Believe it or not, I’m in training. On September 13th I will be taking part in The Great North Run, perhaps Britain’s most iconic half marathon. Again, why? I hear you say. Well, there are two reasons... Firstly, they say there’s no such thing as a selfless good deed, and ‘Friends’ fans will remember Phoebe’s unsuccessful attempts to disprove this theory. Unfortunately, in my case, this is true. I am partly doing this for my own self-fulfilment. I want to achieve something that is totally out of my comfort zone and, more importantly, I want my kids to see me doing it. I want them to learn that with a bit (well, quite a lot) of effort, anything’s possible – even things that don’t come easily to you (just don’t ask me to do a marathon). And I want them to be proud of me. They’ll be there to scrape me off the ground as I cross the finish line, in whatever state I may be in, and I know that the thought of a big sweaty hug with my favourite little people will keep me going. The second reason is the one that really keeps me motivated. The one that makes me survey my footwear choices and pick trainers over slippers several times a week; the one that makes me keep adding miles on to my training runs even though they’re not getting any easier; and the one that keeps my legs going even when the rest of my body has all but given up. I’m raising money

for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity; not because either of my children are ill – but precisely because they’re not. Every day I thank my lucky stars that my kids are happy, healthy and carefree, just like children should be. Sadly though, every single day in the UK ten children, and their families, receive the shocking news that they have cancer. They’re suddenly forced to grow up too quickly and deal with not only the treatment and physical symptoms of their illness, but all the other emotional and practical issues that surround a diagnosis – and they do so with more courage, determination and positivity than most adults could muster. CLIC Sargent provides vital support to these children and their families in many ways from financial grants, to play specialists, nurses, family accommodation near hospitals, holidays and short breaks, social care and emotional support, to name but a few. They help families to be together as much as possible and give children the opportunity to not be ‘someone with cancer’ but to just be children again. Each year they help thousands of children who haven’t asked to be put in this situation but are battling it with all they have, regardless. I’ve chosen to run because they have no choice but to fight – and if, by running, I can help to make life a little easier for just one child then it’s worth every step. So, if you see me ‘training’ and I’m an unnatural shade of red, don’t call an ambulance – I’m fine. I’m determined to make it, even if I have to crawl over the finish line on my hands and knees. If, however, you would like to show your support by sponsoring me please visit www.justgiving.com/HelenYoungGNR - every penny is very much appreciated. For more information about CLIC Sargent and the wonderful work that they do go to www.clicsargent.org.uk.

Your Horoscope August and September 2015 The Cosmos during August and September August: This month brings an abundance of Leo energy; the lion is roaring and he brings passion, fire, love and romance – just in time for the holiday season! The love planet Venus is in retrograde motion all month, providing lessons in evaluating the real worth of relationships and partnerships. Direct motion commences early September when life goes much more smoothly. Mighty Jupiter, the planet of abundance and good luck, leaves fiery and dramatic Leo on the 10th, moving into more sedate and industrious Virgo for a one-year stay. Last in this sign twelve years ago, we can now prepare and be ready for focus and consistency. Jupiter in Virgo helps us to pay attention to detail and turn our visions into reality. Mars, the warrior planet, moves into Leo on the 9th; there is still plenty of opportunity for creative ideas to flourish in preparation for the practical Jupiter in Virgo times ahead. The Leo new moon is on the 14th and the full moon in Pisces is on the 29th. September: This is always a busy month as the diligent Virgo sun turns attention to concentration and study, schools and colleges start their new term and hard work begins again. Mighty Jupiter is close to the Sun at the start of the month, bringing an optimistic feeling for life with the focus on expansion, improvement, promotion and growth. The love planets, Mars and Venus, cuddle up together in dramatic Leo; there’s still plenty of vitality for passionate relationships. The 8th is a particularly important date as maverick planet Uranus makes a strong aspect to Mars – anything is possible so expect the unexpected! The Virgo new moon on the 13th is beneficial for making new plans, and following them through. The full moon in Aries on the 28th brings extra courage and confidence to proceed with a cherished vision. ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 It’s all change after the 9th, as no less than five planets occupy the love and romance sector of your chart – fun and games are in the spotlight and the focus may well be on any children that happen to be in your life. There is an abundance of creative energy available; make the most of it! September: This month brings renewed action in the work and relationship sectors of your chart. Balanced Mercury in Libra assists objective communication on all levels. An exciting career opportunity can come your way this month as Jupiter and the Sun work harmoniously in your favour. TAURUS: APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Home and family are a strong focus this month, particularly after the 9th when fiery Mars moves into Leo. Action on the domestic front is called for and this can show itself through renovations or general comings and goings of friends and family. The Leo new moon on the 14th brings a surprise! September: This month turns your attention to love and creativity. Abundant Jupiter is in Virgo giving you renewed vitality and courage to achieve your goals. Venus, your ruling planet, turns direct on the 7th, suggesting that close relationships are ready to come under review. GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Creative communication is at the top of your list for August. After the 9th, five planets occupy this imaginative and resourceful area of your chart. The energy is high and this could be the time for that long-held vision to become a reality; particularly after Mercury changes sign on the 8th. September: Home and family life come into focus during September as the Sun and Jupiter pass through this important area of your life. Certain decisions that you have been putting off for a while will need your full attention now. With the love planet, Venus, occupying the communication area of your chart, it’s important that you speak your mind. CANCER: JUNE 22 - JULY 22 August brings your thoughts and focus to your financial situation. Motivational Mars moves into Leo on the 9th and with it come some fantastic new ideas for making money. Creativity is at an all-time high and you need to let your imagination run wild, particularly after the spectacular new moon on the 14th. September: The spotlight is on communication and everything to do with your self-esteem. The new moon on the 13th highlights your interactions with others; important changes are on the horizon and you should be feeling ready to forge ahead. The full moon on the 28th challenges you to be courageous. LEO: JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 The heat is on for roaring lions this month as an overabundance of passion and intensity peaks with energetic Mars moving in on the 9th. Tread carefully to avoid burnout, but do use this creative energy wisely and make your plans for the months ahead. Jupiter enhances vitality until the 10th. September: Funds, assets and cash flow all loom large during September as the Sun and abundant Jupiter both illuminate this area of your chart. Jupiter usually brings optimism and good luck, but also warns of overstretching yourself. Mercury in Libra brings balance and objectivity.

With Saturn back in Scorpio until the 18th, reorganisation is essential and it’s definitely time to look at new potentials, particularly around the time of the new moon on the 13th. CAPRICORN: DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 20 Energetic Mars moves out of your relationship sector on the 9th; you may well breathe a sigh of relief as any conflicts and disagreements should lessen now. Jupiter changing signs on the 11th and the new moon on the 14th make this a very special time for exciting new beginnings. September: This month suggests that Capricorns have the opportunity for some interesting career moves. As Saturn, your ruler, is back in Scorpio until the 18th, some serious decisions may be necessary. The new moon on the 13th encourages you to take positive action. AQUARIUS: JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 18 An abundance of energy in your opposite sign of Leo ensures that this is an exciting month. Challenges may come from all directions, but take this opportunity to increase your social connections. Jupiter arrives in your financial sector on the 11th – this could be the start of a lucky twelve months! September: Hard-working Saturn remains in your career sector until the 18th; if you put your powers of judgement to the test you should see the culmination of an ambitious project. A spectacular alignment from Mars to your ruling planet takes place on the 8th – expect the unexpected! PISCES: FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20 Work and everyday matters are the main focus for this month. It is a good time to make creative changes to your diet, nutrition and fitness routine. Abundant Jupiter arrives in your relationship area on the 11th; you can expect plenty of rewarding times with people who are close to you. September: This remains a favourable time for your relationships as the Sun and Jupiter ensure that time spent with a partner becomes more rewarding and romantic. The Mars/Uranus alignment on the 8th could bring a spectacular opportunity your way; it’s time to get busy with personal and professional goals.

Upbeat Amber Valley residents are being urged to be vigilant against doorstep crime and rogue traders – people pretending to be tradespeople offering urgent repairs or other work. They cold-call, pressurising householders into making quick decisions, paying in advance, or do poor work at highly inflated prices. Older adults are more at risk as they are more likely to trust callers who turn up unannounced claiming to be from the council, utility companies, social or health services, or even the police. Sometimes, they may let callers into their home if they ask to use their toilet, the phone, or use other excuses. In the most serious cases, rogue traders return to the same victim repeatedly until their savings are exhausted. How to stay safe: • If you are really not sure who is at the door then the best advice is not to open it; • Check the identity of any caller and confirm it by calling the company they work for using the number in the telephone directory or on a bill; • Call a neighbour to come round to check them before you open the door; • Tell them to come back at a time when someone will be at home with you;

• Before answering the front door, make sure back doors and any windows are locked; • Use the door chain; • If the caller is selling goods or services, tell them that you are not interested and ask them to leave. Genuine, reputable firms won’t need to drum up business by cold-calling. How to help others: • Encourage neighbours, friends or relatives not to open the door to anyone they are unsure of; • Make sure they know that genuine companies are unlikely to go door-to-door; • Put them in touch with tradesmen you can guarantee are reliable; • Most importantly, keep an eye on people calling in the area or acting suspiciously. If they appear to be using a vehicle, or if a vehicle that you wouldn’t normally see has been in the area a while, take down the registration number, colour, make and model. Report information about suspicious callers or activity to the police on 101. Always use 999 in an emergency, where you are concerned about someone’s safety or think a crime is in progress. You can find out more about rogue traders, including advice and useful information, at http://www.derbyshire.police.uk/Safety-advice/ Rogue-Traders/Rogue-Traders.aspx.
