The spectacle offered by the "veterans" in KZ / KZ2 is breathtaking, light years ahead of most single-seater racing. After a wonderful Winter Cup at sunny Lonato, Castelletto saw the start of the WSK Super Master Series which was marked by terrible weather, but the sporting intensity didn't suffer. We should welcome the great victory at 7 Laghi for the Moroccan Sami Taoufik in OK-Junior, an important first for his country. The Sodi double in KZ2, with Anthony Abbasse the winner, meant that we heard the Marseillaise in Italy, which is never unpleasant to French ears.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL

HAS NOT FORGOTTEN HIS YEARS IN KARTING

The quadruple Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel has collected successes from his beginnings in karting. The European ICA Junior Champion in 2001, his precocious talent was soon to blossom in cars. Sebastian has not forgotten his years of karting and is always ready to get behind the wheel of a kart for fun or to encourage young apprentice champions.

Sebastian, where does your passion for motor sports come from? - It's simple! I come from a family passionate about motorsport who gradually transmitted the virus to me. As my father was driving in hillclimbs, we were already immersed in competition. As a child I remember I was watching the Formula 1 Grand Prix with him. Then, feeling that I was interested, my father gave me a kart which I could do tricks with in the garden. I must have been 3 or 4 and a half years old when I started. You see, this goes a long way back!

What are your best memories from karting? - Like many drivers, I have very good memories of my years in karting. There have been important victories like my first title in Bambini class B when I was 10 years old. 2001 was an significant year in ICA-Junior with victories in the European Championship, the German Championship and Monaco Kart Cup driving a Tony Kart / Vortex. I remember in particular Michael Schumacher personally handing me the winner's trophy after a race at Kerpen. I will never forget this important moment ...

In your opinion, what is the role of karting in the development of a Driver? - These are the first experiments in motorsport, we have many things to learn, starting with the discipline to succeed. One learns to assimilate the circuits and to understand the operation of the machine. Gradually his driving personality is forged. This is obvious, but we must remember that karting is the best school to prepare for car racing. To succeed, a young driver must believe in himself and follow his own path to achieve his objectives, without forgetting the pleasure of driving.

NEWS

What do you think of the current karting competition?

Have you stayed close to karting?

- Karting has become more expensive and that's a shame, but everything has become more expensive in life in general. I think that karting must strive to become affordable without losing sight of its origins. I know efforts are being made to provide greater equity and to produce more exciting races. This is going in the right direction. Â

- Even when you drive in the highest categories, there is always pleasure in taking the wheel of a kart. As soon as I am able, I return to karting with my friends. Furthermore, I willingly agreed to become the sponsor of the DKM (German Karting Championship) because I think firstly it is a good thing to support young drivers and secondly I had give back to karting part of what it has given me.

THE RENOVATION OF SOUTH GARDA KARTING

The extension of the South Garda Karting circuit in Lonato has occupied many converssations during the Winter Cup.

N

ow extended to 1200 m, the new track has convinced all of the participants, of which there were many! Faster, more rhythmic, with beautiful overtaking opportunities, the busiest track in Italy and probably the world, clearly sets new ambitions on the international stage, especially as the improvements have not only been to the track. The Parc Ferme and the techni-

cal facilities have benefited from the work to enlarge and modernise, while the mechanics stand is even equipped with screens to follow the rankings. Greatly expanded, the paddock is now stabilised and the roadways are paved. The development is expected to continue over the course of the season, including the construction of a new press room.

PRESENTATION OF THE JB #17 CHASSIS DURING THE WINTER CUP

It was a moment full of emotion at Lonato at the presentation of the JB #17 frame as a tribute to Jules Bianchi by his father Philippe and his brother Tom. It is an edition of the Mad Croc machine with specific decorations used at the Winter Cup with four drivers in the JB #17 colours: the young Italian Antonino Guerrera in Mini Rok, the Spanish Genis Civico in OK-Junior, the Briton Ben Hanley in OK and the Russian Ivan Chubarov in KZ2.

NEWS

It was important for us to present the JB #17 brand now, as the Jules Bianchi Foundation is being created," said Philippe Bianchi. "JB #17 is the opposite of a media coup. It is a way for us to stay close to Jules and embark on an adventure that he would have loved. We are doing it for him and for us too, because life requires us to move forward, especially when it's not easy. Everyone knows that Jules was always a big fan of karting, and even when he reached Formula 1, he never forgot that it was thanks to karting. Initial feedback from around the world is very moving: Jules was very popular and many people are faithful to his memory. Under the aegis of the Foundation, which will soon be launched in Monaco with the support of the Prince, we will develop initiatives to help young drivers and facilitate their emergence in competition. It was obvious to us that this should be done on "Bianchi" karts. In presenting the brand JB #17, we are giving ourselves the time to put in place the necessary structure and prepare the chassis for homologation for year 2017. We naturally turned to Armando Filini, because of the strong connection that unites Jules from the Maranello era. In the future we hope to set up a JB # 17 racing team with Tom at the helm, as well as being supported by strong partners, like CPB Sport does with Sodi. We are setting up a great project. It's hard for us to dive back into the world of competition karting, but we are doing it for Jules and that's what drives us."

STRONG SATISFACTION INDEX FOR BRIDGESTONE AT THE 2016 WINTER CUP The Bridgestone tyres used during the 2016 Winter Cup have been unanimously appreciated in all categories, from Mini Rok to KZ2. The positive feedback has made us want to know more...

U

nder the name YLM, a code already used in the past, they are actually specific tyres developed by Bridgestone in the context of preparing for a future homologation. The Winter Cup has allowed large-scale experimentation, both during the preliminary testing and during all phases of the competition, which brought together 268 pilots and four categories. The impressions collected by Bridgestone's technical team will enable the Japanese brand to further refine its future product. Already, compliments have not failed in an environment that is as demanding as it is critical of the tyres. The overall quality

of the grip from the YLM received general support in all categories. To be more precise, consistency in performance lap by lap was underlined by users, going from a used set to a new set only meant a small difference against the clock, in the order of 2/10 per lap. The endurance of these tyres was also noticed by some competitors who ran almost 100 laps on a set without a significant decrease in pace. Others have even mentioned the potential of these tyres in endurance racing ... The B'stone YLM as they were used at the Winter Cup are considered to have contributed to the overall success of the meeting.

OTK KART GROUP PRESS TEST AT LONATO

A

fter the Winter Cup, OTK Kart Group ran tests at Lonato to show its new products to the press and a few potential customers. Installed on Tony Kart and Kosmic chassis, the new Vortex engines were the stars. Although the curiosity was mainly about the OK (DDS) and OK-Junior (DDJ) engines, the gearbox RKZ gearbox also aroused great interest. Victories in the Winter Cup for the Tony Kart factory drivers Marco Ardigo in KZ2 and Nicklas Nielsen in OK, to which must be added that of Fin Kenneally in OK-Junior on a FA Kart / Vortex with Ricky Flynn Motorsport, gave a particular lustre to this spectacular promotional operation.

Nicolas Deschaux, the President of the French Motorsport Federation: "Each year, the Director of the FFSA Committee decides to assist many young talents with promising performance, with the ambition of seeing young French drivers shine at the highest international level"

MEMBERS OF THE 2016 '10-15 PROGRAMME' The 10-15 Programme whose objective is the detection of drivers aged 10 to 15 years, will be made up in 2016 of young hopefuls from the Mini-kart categories, Minime & Cadet, or OKJ. They will receive three training sessions organised at the FFSA Academy (physical preparation, mental, media training, medical monitoring, driver training day). The members selected by the FFSA* are: Marcus AMAND, Loris CABIROU, Gillian HENRION, Victor MARTINS and Theo Pourchaire. * The integration of other drivers during the season is possible at the discretion of the FFSA.

SIBERIAN CONDITIONS FOR THE WSK AT CASTELLETTO The qualifying heats of the WSK Super Master Series had to be cancelled on Saturday, March 5th at Castelletto. In the memory of the photographers, we have never seen that over the last 20 years!

A

lthough the circuit 7 Laghi was not covered with snow or ice, the weather conditions nevertheless led the event officials to stop its progress early on Saturday afternoon. The rain which had been falling since the middle of the night, was accompanied by very cold temperatures, somewhat below 0 °, with some snowfall. The edges of the track were flooded and the track was painfully cold for the drivers and their mechanics, so this was the particular phenomenon that ultimately decided the suspension of the programme. The fuel was beginning to thicken under the action of low temperatures in the hoses before reaching the carburettor which was itself well cooled. In the presence of moist air at near 100% humidity the mixture froze in certain engines, in particular 60 Mini and KZ. The risk of failure was added to the safety concerns and it was a necessary decision. The competition progressed more normally on Sunday morning, with slightly milder weather which was almost dry, for the Finals only which started in the order of Qualifying.

While the WSK Super Master Series had not yet crowned the Sodi double of Anthony Abbasse and Bas Lammers in KZ, Kartcom News spoke with Julien Dexmier in the Castelletto paddock, the boss of the factory racing team of the French brand Sodikart. SODI HAS STARTED THE 2016 SEASON WELL IN KZ, SO HOW HAS THE PREPARATION FOR 2016 BEEN? - We started on the benchmark frame developed in 2015 for the KZ World Championship at Le Mans which has now become the production model under the name Sigma KZ 2016, performing well last year on both Vega and Bridgestone, two very different types of tyres. Feedback from our customers has already showed strong satisfaction this season, which we confirmed during the Winter Cup. We have only done a little testing since Le Mans and it's good to see that our drivers are already among the best. I want to repeat that we used strictly standard equipment and accessories for the first two races of the year.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS IN TERMS OF DEVELOPMENT? - From the WSK round at Sarno onwards, we will begin our true test programme with chassis developments. The big difference from 2015 is that we are starting on solid ground and that we will be able to refine more details without affecting the general operation of the equipment, which is much more stable. Last year, everything was changing and we tried many configurations, sometimes, very different, with the risk of losing time. But it was necessary, and then we ended the year well. In 2016, we are also relying on the contributions of Jérémy Iglesias, of Team CPB Sport, who has taken part in all our tests in the company of Anthony Abbasse and Bas Lammers. We will move forward faster with three drivers who get along well, so I'm really confident.

WHAT IS THE SODI RACING TEAM PROGRAMME FOR 2016? - We are focusing on the KZ category with the four races of the WSK Super Master Series, three rounds of the CIK-FIA European Championship and the World Championship in Sweden. Kristinastad will be a new challenge for most the team. Lammers participated in the 2014 European Championship in KZ with another team and Jordan Grégoire, Abbasse's mechanic, at the time worked for Douglas Lundberg, the KZ2 winner, but that's all. Learning a track is not a problem for good drivers, but it requires that the equipment be on the pace from the first running, otherwise it is very difficult to catch up during the race. That is why we have planned a week of preliminary testing. We also plan to participate at in the finals of the US Open at the end of the year in Las Vegas.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN TERMS OF ENGINES? We are always faithful to the TM Racing Factory. A real leap forward has been made with the new KZ 10 C which has a wider operating range. Franco Drudi ensures the preparation for his part and will work closely with us during competitions. The engines are likely to play a bigger role this year with the use of Vega tyres at all events, especially as the other engine manufacturers have worked hard for the new homologation.

A factory Birel ART driver in Europe, in KZ as well as KF / OK and Rotax DD2, the Briton Jordon Lennox-Lamb has participated regularly in championships on US soil for several seasons. He is therefore well placed to compare the two different approaches to kart racing.

FIRSTLY JORDON, WHAT IS YOUR SCHEDULE AND ESPECIALLY YOUR ROLE IN THE US? - This year, as a factory driver for Birel ART, I cannot go to all of the US races that I had hoped because of clashes with some important dates in my pro-

x-Lamb,

he USA

gramme in Europe. In the US, I work with the Canadian team PSL Karting which is the Birel ART and Ricciardo Kart importer for North America since last year. Of course I go to the races as a driver, but my role is to advise the teams who race with our equipment, and to ensure that all goes well. The US market is currently a major challenge for the European karting industry and we need to put all the advantages on our side to increase our presence in the US.

WHAT ARE THE AMERICAN COMPETITIONS LIKE? - Certainly the American races are a bit more aggressive than in Europe. Clashes are frequent and generally barely punished. This is something they should improve. Since the arrival of MaxSpeed Entertainment as the organiser of the Florida Winter Tour and the US Open, I felt that efforts have been made to ensure greater rigour in racing. For example, the schedule is tighter and better respected. It's more like the competitions are used to and it is a very good thing. It is more difficult for a European to win because local drivers are accustomed to the conditions at their circuits, and their own equipment. When we get there, we need to use engines prepared on site that we don't know and also to learn to manage the races the way they do. That's why we have a small disadvantage. In contrast, the atmosphere is much calmer than in Europe, everyone chats in the paddock, which is really nice.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE STANDARD OF THE AMERICAN DRIVERS? There are more and more structured teams that support young driver development, which is promising for the future. Otherwise, there are obviously very good drivers, but the field can also be very uneven with large differences in driving skill which we must learn to handle. There are not always many on track because there are so many categories. Besides the rivalry between the East Coast and the West Coast, Rotax, the Rok and the X30, the 125cc gearbox can be divided into several categories based on age of the S1 to S5. That's a lot in total. As in Europe now, young drivers are very numerous and it decreases greatly when they can go to cars from 14 to 15 years old. It must be said that the possibilities of auto racing in are very significant in the United States.

AND THE TRACKS? - Americans do not have the same safety culture as us. In Europe we have a lot of rules to follow because of the power of the CIK-FIA which is universally recognised. There, everyone does a bit of what he wants, as long as things are going well. The circuits are not nearly as well equipped as ours. But I would not say that the races are more dangerous, because danger is part of motorsport. If something is going to happen, it will happen, that's all.

oth at the WSK Champions Cup at Adria and during the Winter Cup at Lonato, the 2015 World Champion was able to use the potential of his new Kosmic / Vortex OK to produce leading results. 2nd at Adria, Basz fought to get back in the top three at Lonato after being delayed by a drop in the first heat. Climbing from 11th to 5th position in the Prefinal, he quickly recovered 3rd place, but the two drivers ahead of him had had enough time to take off so he could not join them. The Swede Noah Millel is well integrated into the team and managed to reach the top five of the Winter Cup in his second race in OK. "We have demonstrated encouraging potential this season, knowing that we still have work to do to enable our drivers to make the difference," admitted Olivier MarĂŠchal. "Karol played his role of lead driver well in OK, which allowed us to validate certain technical decisions which were likewise proven by the results of our new recruit, Noah Millel. Our young Junior drivers still lack a bit of consistency and maturity, but I'm not worried, progress is underway. In KZ2 the results are not up to our expectations at the moment, even though the raw performance is encouraging." The Belgian Charles Weerts made a great recovery in the Prefinal and Final to finish in a very nice 8th position in OK-Junior at the Winter Cup. The Frenchman Franck Chappard benefited from joining Kosmic to gain confidence and show good consistency that led him to 15th place in the Champions Cup. A bit off form at Adria, the young French driver Theo Pourchaire was proved in the pack at Lonato, 6th in Qualifying and 6th in the ranking of the heats before giving up after going off track in the Prefinal. The young Swede Daniel Vebster was on his debut at Kosmic in the Winter Cup but could not defend his chances in the Prefinal. Andreas Backmann has started the KZ2 season with a 12th place at Adria and a top 10 at the Winter Cup, in the presence of top names from KZ. Although Patrik Hajek was able to rank 10th in the Champions Cup despite a penalty, it was more difficult at Lonato with a retirement in the final heat, then a penalty of 10'' for a fallen spoiler which deprived him of his qualification in the Prefinal. The Kosmic Racing Team will now prepare for the WSK Super Master Series, then the programme will lead to the German Championship, the European Championship and the World events in the second half of the season.

BESANCENEZ: RECOVERY THWARTED AT THE WINTER CUP The 2016 Winter Cup was the first race for Paolo Besancenez after a long winter break. Always true to his Tony Kart / Vortex KZ2 prepared by Cédric Sport, the Paris driver gradually found his performance. He was not on the pace in Qualifying and posted the 7th time in his group, 3/10 from the leader, which put him in 25th place in a category full of recognised talents including the professionals from KZ.

P

aolo quickly righted the situation in terms of performance in the heats, but a penalty of 10'' for dislodged spoiler in the first heat did not help his progress. Consistently around the top 10, however, he had made good progress with one lap just 7/100 off the best in the third heat. 24th in the intermediate classification, he was counting on the Prefinal to accentuate his return to the head. Prefinal B unfortunately began with an incident that made him lose seven places on the first lap. Never mind, Paolo was off on the attack again and closed on the top 10 after halfway. He even reached 10th position a few laps later, but an airbox problem ruined all his efforts, causing his retirement when he had completed the bulk of the work. As the Prefinals qualify for the Finals in this competition, it was all over for him. As seasoned competitor, Paolo quickly moved on from the relative disappointment to refocus on the positive aspects of the event. "I was glad to get behind the wheel and my participation in the event quickly got me back into the swing of things. I wasn't slow to get back on the pace and my lap times were decent. The Winter Cup is known to be a difficult race in KZ2 and there were plenty of clashes. Of course I would have preferred to continue my climb in the Final, but I will have more opportunities to express myself during the season, starting with the Ile-de-France Regional Championship."

ER CUP SELON

TIMOTHYPEISSELON.COM

On the new Lonato track, Timothy Peisselon was even stronger than at the previous race at Adria. A suicidal attack from an opponent prevented him from fighting for the OK-Junior victory with his rival Fin Kenneally, his team-mate at RFM. In any case, two 2nd places in a row early in the season shows the great form of the Brignoles driver in 2016.

A

fter a cautious start with 19th in Qualifying, Timothy was able to exploit the resources of his FA Kart / Vortex to lead the class at the end of the qualifying heats in which he assured simply breathtaking place gains. Avoiding the hustle of the early laps, overtaking relentlessly and keeping the pace up until the finish, Timothy is now able to succeed at every opportunity. What progress in a year! Leading from start to finish and the winner of Prefinal A, Timothy led the first six laps of the Final. The race then turned into a promising three-way battle until the Russian Ivan Shvetsov overestimated his opportunity. "We were very close for a few laps and I was preparing an attack on Fin to regain the lead," explained Timothy. "But Ivan threw it up the inside of the the last hairpin while I was already committed. His kart was on top of mind, fortunately we didn't stall, but Fin took the opportunity to escape. I crossed the line in 3rd place defending from Noah Watt. The stewards penalised Ivan which put me in 2nd place, but after the incident I was unable to fight for victory ... " Anyway, it has been a wonderful start to the season for Timothy with the British team Ricky Flynn Motorsport. Given his performance and motivation, there could soon be victory in OK-Junior.

THEO POURCHAIRE ALREADY IN THE L From the free practice of the great classic opener, we saw that Theo Pourchaire had moved up a gear. The Qualifying session on Friday afternoon confirmed this impression when he posted the 2nd fastest time in his group, 8/100 from the best lap. The Kosmic Racing Department driver found himself 6th in the overall standings of the 65 entries and well positioned for the qualifying heats.

LEADING GROUP AT THE WINTER CUP W

hat also makes it difficult and interesting at an event like the Winter Cup, it is the intensity of the battles that enliven all the races on the selective Lonato track. The second pleasant surprise of the weekend came from Theo's attacking behaviour in the middle of the pack. Slightly heckled from the first lap, the young southern driver perfectly straightened the situation in the other two races, fiercely defending his position from the numerous attacks and quickly taking up the lost ground when necessary. 2nd and 3rd places crowned his efforts, as he maintained 6th place at the end of the heats. "The equipment was very effective at Lonato and I was well prepared for this Winter Cup that everyone had told me was

a particularly contested race," Theo explained. "I was able to focus on the management of races and learn to fight in the pack. I think I've taken an important step forward in this area. Missing my qualification for the Final is of course a disappointment, because I knew I had a good card to play. But the first lap of Prefinal B went wrong and I spun on the right after the start when I was in 2nd position. I could not restart, and anyway it was too late to catch up with the pack." Undoubtedly, this Winter Cup has been rich in lessons and Theo will start again stronger and more confident for the rest of his programme that will lead shortly to Castelletto for the first round of the WSK Super Master Series.

ETEKI: INTERESTING FIRST EXPER ADAMETEKI.COM Adam Eteki made his debut in the OKJunior category at the 21st Winter Cup on the new extended track at South Garda Karting. This classic grand opening of the international season was also a first for the SG Drivers team and for Kart Runner engine. The experience was generally positive with performance increasing throughout the meeting, but incident damage disrupted the Final on the first lap. Many lessons have been learned from this first experience, both for the equipment and people, which will be used to prepare for the coming races.

A

dam arrived on unknown territory at the start of the Winter Cup. The winner of the 2015 French Cup in National had started off in European competition disputing the Rotax Euro Challenge where he finished in an excellent 6th in Junior. After a long winter break, he went into the thick of things at Lonato driving his Tony Kart / Vortex with the SG Drivers team. Probably somewhat intimidated by this new challenge where he really wanted to do well, Adam began cautiously with a 42nd in Qualifying, but gained ground in the qualifying heats and came back to 27th position in the intermediate classification, a gain of 15 places to his credit.

"Everything is new to me here," he confided. "We must find our bearings before really going on the attack. The equipment has progressed, but the competition is fierce. I managed to gain positions during the heats fighting in the middle of the pack, which made me more confident. I drove relatively safely with the goal of finishing all of the races. It was essential for me and for the team to gain as much experience as possible. The OK-Junior category is a very interesting, but also very demanding. We can not compete immediately after starting off at this level. That said, I am not unhappy with this first event, except for the incident early in the Final." Adam managed to qualify in 11th position in Prefinal B, while the battle was becoming increasingly tough. To be on the starting grid for his first Winter Cup is already a good sign. Caught in a collision shortly after the start, Adam managed to restart himself, but had to complete in a solo race at a distance, even though he gained a total of over 7'' on the pack.

SIMMENAUER CONFIR When asked if he liked the layout of the 7 Laghi track at Castelletto, Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer calmly responded: "A good driver must adapt to every circuit, it is part of the competition. The challenge is precisely to master the peculiarities of each race." Given the results of the first round of the WSK Super Master Series, that are not empty words.

T

he harsh winter conditions that prevailed at Castelletto did not affect JeanBaptiste's operating schedule. Setting the 9th fastest lap of the 33 participants in the OK class, the only Frenchman put his factory Tony Kart / Vortex straight in the top five of the Prefinal after the cancellation the qualifying heats because of weather that was too cold on Saturday. Avoiding the pitfalls at the start on the race track, as well as the risk of contact and penalty for displaced spoilers, JB fought steadily in the top three at the start of the Final, before giving the maximum to regain 4th position after a few laps. Although the speed of Jean-Baptiste is currently his major asset - he set

the 4th fastest time in both races his overtaking has progressed when measured against his team-mate Nicklas Nielsen as well as Tom Joyner or Felice Tiene, drivers among the most experienced in the field. His consistency also enabled him to start the WSK Super Master Series in 3rd position in the championship. "It is unfortunate that bad weather shortened the programme, when you see the energy that is put into the preparation for a race like that," said Jean-Baptiste. "But you have to be fatalistic, and the end result was not bad. We are immediately heading to Sarno for the next race, hoping that the rain does not flood the circuit this time."

CONTRASTING FRENCH PERFORMANCES

IN THE WSK AT CASTELLETTO

Bad weather disrupted the running of the first round of the 2016 WSK Super Master Series on the 7 Laghi circuit at Castelletto on Saturday when the programme had to be cut short. The competition, however, was intense and spectacular. The French performed rather well in all categories, although the cancellation of the heats complicated the task of several Juniors.

L

a Marseillaise rang out to greet the stunning victory of Anthony Abbasse (Sodi / TM / Sodi Racing Team) in KZ, while Jérémy Iglesisas (Sodi / TM / CPB Sport) finished 4th with the fastest lap. In KZ2, integrated with KZ on the track, Paul Fontaine (Sodi / TM / CPB Sport) retired in Prefinal A, as he approached the fateful 17th. Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer (Tony Kart / Vortex / Tony Kart Racing Team) continued to progress very convincingly in OK finishing just off the podium.

The 10 tricolor drivers in OK-Junior had mixed fortunes. The cancellation of the qualifying heats did not make the task easy for those who had not qualified adequately. So Thomas Mialane (Energy / TM / Energy Corse) and Milan Petelet (Praga / Parilla / Praga Racing Team) were overwhelmed and after technical problems could not qualify. Theo Nouet (Energy / TM / Energy Corse) and Gillian Henrion (Kosmic / Vortex / Henrion Racing) were also too far away to reach the Finals directly while Thomas Imbourg (Kosmic / Parilla / VDK Racing) was not bad for his first race OK-in Junior,

but was eliminated in the Prefinal at the first corner. Franck Chappard (Kosmic / Vortex / Kosmic Racing Team) qualified again for the Finals where he set the fifth fastest time, while finishing 28th. Theo Pourchaire (Kosmic / Vortex / Kosmic Racing Team) was fighting in the heart of the pack, but lost ground in the Final to 21st. 11th in Qualifying and unbeatable in the rain, Victor Martins (Kosmic / Vortex / VDK Racing) still lacked experience in the pack and took 16th position in the Final with the fastest lap of the race. Charles Milesi (Tony Kart / Vortex / Tony Kart Racing Team) suffered a hand injury after an accident during a race. 5th in Qualifying and 5th in his Prefinal, he still managed to finish 11th. A winner of his Prefinal, Timothy Peisselon (FA Kart /

Vortex / RFM) lost contact with the lead at the start of the Final and finished 6th. Two young French drivers competed in 60 Mini. Evann Mallet (CRG / TM / Gamoto) was ahead of the Italians in Qualifying with pole position, and during the Prefinal A. Not as fast in the Final, he crossed the finish line in 7th place, but found himself ranked 18th after a penalty. Benjamin Cartery (IP Kart / TM / Formula K Junior Team) was close to the top 10 in Qualifying and in the Prefinal before retiring in the Final after several incidents.

IN THE TOP 10 AT CASTELLETTO AFTER INJURY After his strong performance in the WSK Champions Cup at Adria, Charles Milesi had some problems at the Winter Cup in Lonato. A clash delayed him in the second heat and another eliminated him from the Prefinal B. Determined to catch up during the WSK Super Master Series opening race at Castelletto, he had a good card to play on the 7 Laghi circuit. The spell has hardly been favourable and he had to settle for a place in the top 10 of the championship standings.

D

oing well on the clock with his 5th position, Charles injured his left hand in a serious crash on his first run. The rainy and very cold weather on Saturday led the organisers to eventually cancel all the qualifying heats, an exceptional decision motivated by the fuel freezing in the carburettors. On Sunday morning, the competition could resume and in Prefinal A he presented himself well with a 3rd place on the grid. Charles immediately went on

the attack and took the lead from the first lap, but persistent pain prevented him from maintaining the pace and he had to give ground back to 5th position despite his fastest race lap. The situation did not improve in the Final, the Tony Kart Racing Team driver clenched his teeth so as not to be left behind. He bravely managed to finish in 11th place.

SODI DOUBLY VICTORIOUS AT CASTELLETTO IN THE WSK

Sodi had already caused a sensation at sunny Lonato by placing one of its drivers on the podium of the Winter Cup in KZ2. Two weeks later, they won in KZ in the cold of Castelletto, during the first round of the WSK Super Master Series. The double success was all the more remarkable in that it included a top step for Abbasse, a 2nd for Lammers, and 4th position with the fastest lap in the race for Iglesias.

C

ertainly, the Sodi chassis are on fire at the highest level of international karting competition. Faced with highly seasoned competition, the products from the French factory delivered outstanding competitiveness. It is worth pointing out at this stage of the season that the Sodi drivers use Sigma KZ chassis and accessories that are strictly standard. This is a great reward for the hard work done by the entire company for the last year and a half. Effective collaboration between the Sodi Racing Team and the Research & Development department has been successful, but the constant effort of all Sodi employees also plays a major role in these early successes with the mass production of such effective equipment. The major contribution of Arnaud Kozlinski in the development of the Sigma KZ last year is also to be welcomed. Sodi congratulates its partner TM Racing engines, with Franco Drudi and Filippo Flenghi, for the level of performance of its new KZ 10 C.

After the successful formation finish in the 2015 World Championship at Le Mans, Sodi is proud to win again at an international event of great value like the WSK Super Master Series in which the best drivers and teams in the world compete. 3rd in Qualifying, Anthony Abbasse already secured a promising 2nd place in Prefinal A, while Bas Lammers reached the same rank in Prefinal B, with the fastest lap, while regaining seven positions. Abbasse quickly took the lead in the Final, while Lammers came back to the leaders. The last five laps produced a breathtaking duel between the two Sodi drivers, Lammers taking control on the penultimate lap and Abbasse recovering the place in the last metres of a breathtaking race. It was a long time since the Marseillaise had been heard in KZ, the top category of karting, and much applause greeted Sodi.

JĂŠrĂŠmy Iglesias is associated with this great success in more ways than one. A member of Team CPB Sport, he has participated in the Sodi Racing Team tests and plays an important role in the development work. Victim of a collision on the last lap of the Prefinal, in the Final he moved up from 8th to 4th position while giving Sodi the fastest lap of the race, and he would have more than earned his place on the podium. The 2016 season has barely begun but it will be exciting for the French brand, whose chassis have already been proven capable of beating the best foreign products on their own ground.

WSK: FOUR PODIUMS FOR E The drivers carrying the Energy colours have swept the podium at the first round of the WSK Super Master Series. In the four categories where the Italian brand had entered, they were in the top three each time. Congratulations to Christian Lundgaard (3rd in OK), David Vidales (3rd in OK-Junior), "Alex" (2nd in KZ2) and Francesco Pizzi (1st in 60 Mini with the Giugliano Kart team). What a start for the team, which is always looking to make the most of every driver!

ENERGY AT CASTELLETTO T

he competitors faced true winter weather at Castelletto ... Snow showers disrupted Saturday significantly, so the organisers decided to cancel the qualifying heats! "The weekend was difficult to manage for everyone: drivers, mechanics and engine manufacturers," admits Mick Panigada, team manager of Energy Corse. "Skipping from timed practice to the Prefinal was unusual, but the team reacted perfectly in this particular context. We were able to anticipate the track conditions and quickly adapt the setups. Congratulations to all of our representatives for their courage, and special mentions to the four drivers who managed to get their Energy karts on the podium."

LUNDGAARD CONFIRMS IN OK Already on the podium in the WSK Champions Cup, Christian Lundgaard repeated his performance at Castelletto. Starting 11th, the Dane spared no effort to move up to frontrunners at a very steady pace. With this 3rd place, Lundgaard has confirmed that he will be one of the strong men of the category.

OK-JUNIOR: TOP THREE FOR VIDALES Still uncertain, competitive and complex to manage for young drivers, this category has again highlighted the talent of David Vidales. After a difficult start which saw him demoted to 7th in Prefinal A, the Spaniard has continued to move forward. He earned his place in 4th position on the starting grid for the final, where he again moved up a place to climb the third

step of the podium. The abolition of the qualifying heats did not help the progress of Mattia Michelotto, Thomas Mialane, Theo Nouet and Dominik Goldschmied.

ENERGY CORSE STILL STRONG IN KZ2 The winner of the Senior Rotax World Final in 2015 proved he also had a special talent with a gearbox kart. Not content with 2nd place in its category, "Alex" was frequently fighting with more experienced drivers, who were racing in KZ. It was an intense and rewarding race for the young Italian, very comfortable with his Energy-TM.

FRANCESCO PIZZI WINS 60 MINI 2nd in the WSK Champions Cup, winner of the Winter Cup in Mini Rok and now again at the opening of the WSK Super Master Series! The Italian Francesco Pizzi and Energy-Parilla and the whole Giugliano Kart team never cease to impress. His rise in Prefinal A was remarkable, as was his start to the Final. This victory from Pizzi brooked no dissent. In 4th, his Czech teammate Roman Stanek was close to accompanying him on the podium. In total, the Final contained no less than seven Energy chassis.

PAROLIN IS IN THE KZ GAME IN THE TURMOIL OF CASTELLETTO

After successful debut at Adria during the WSK Champions Cup, the Parolin Racing Kart Team continued in international competition at the first round of the WSK Super Master Series. On this occasion Lorenzo Camplese made his debut in the KZ category, for the professionals of karting. Despite extreme conditions and a shortened programme, the factory Parolin Racing Kart driver achieved extraordinary well to fight in the top three at the start of the final.

T

he winter weather at Castelletto did not make the task easy for the Parolin Racing Kart Team in early March. Distanced during the first free practice session, Lorenzo Camplese was back on the pace from the second session. Qualifying didn't provide complete satisfaction with a 13th place overall but the team worked hard to enable the driver to move up significantly in Prefinal A on Sunday morning. Camplese was very close to the best in pure performance and regained six places to finish in 3rd position in the wake and on the pace of the eventual winner. The competitiveness of Parolin Racing Kart was displayed again in the Final and Camplese immediately found himself in the fight for the top three. He then lost ground because of the intensity of the battle, before resuming the ascendancy in the final laps and finished 7th in a lively race. Lorenzo is in 7th place in the provisional championship standings among a stellar roster of confirmed champions. "The weekend of Castelletto wasn't easy for anyone," confided Albino Parolin. "We are not, however, unhappy with our performance. The team is very young and we are already comparable to the greatest specialists with long experience in KZ. We must not forget that this is currently the premier class where the professionals of world karting race. We proved that our KZ chassis was at the peak of competition, ensuring that our racing product is the same our customer base is receiving, which is one of the main objectives for the company. We have planned our development programme with the goal of being at the top for the major CIK-FIA international events and will soon meet our opponents again for the second meeting of the WSK Master Series Super at the Sarno circuit."

ALFANO PROIII EVO, SEVERAL LENGTHS AHEAD! Presented at the 2015 Offenbach show, the new Alfano range has benefited from a full year of testing and development in competition. The Alfano PROIII Evo is a leading product in all respects with strong claims to

295 â‚Ź

stand out from the competition. Simplicity, versatility, economy and performance are the keywords in addition to the scalability of the system encapsulated by the name Evo.

At the centre of the new Alfano PROIII Evo system is of course the central housing with a large display set on the steering wheel of the kart. By itself, the basic version allows for an extremely competitive price, with timing, monitoring of engine speed and measurement of two temperatures (cooling and exhaust), all with no less than 11 configurable LEDs. By adding a single hub, you can connect a speed sensor and also get the gear ratio for KZ. All these basic services are exceptional at this price on the market. The Alfano PROIII Evo makes the difference in the quality of applications that leverage the data. In Android the palette is biggest at the moment, but apps are available for iOS and PC. The flexibility and quality of the apps offers opportunities for very extensive analysis and data management. The customisable display is also one of the highlights of the Alfano PROIII Evo. There are a dozen possibilities in the series to better adapt to the different categories and the priorities of the driver. Always listening to its customers, Alfano can also provide answers to many specific requirements. Indeed, there are already no less than 13 different racing displays. The add-ons (GPS1i, GPS4i, GPS4Vi) extend the capabilities of the Alfano PROIII Evo system as needed: GPS, Bluetooth, USB, G-Force, 2nd speed sensor, two other temperatures, pedal positions, steering wheel position and valve position. The G-Force 3D sensor provides unparalleled precision including in the track mapping while the Bluetooth link facilitates data recovery. Working closely with the drivers from Team KSM Schumacher, the German Champions Bent Viscaal and Alexander Schmitz participated and still participate actively in the development of the Alfano PROIII Evo. Already very complete in its basic version, the Alfano PROIII Evo offers almost endless possibilities for development while remaining very competitive in terms of

price. This is certainly an efficient product to be tried as a matter of urgency. Alfano is also open to any serious enquiries from professionals interested in the distribution of its range, in countries where it is not yet represented. The www.alfano.com is filled with additional information, examples and detailed instructions on the new Alfano PROIII Evo range.

N

orris took the lead again two weeks later at Paul Ricard this time by beating his compatriot Harrison Scott (AVF by Adrian Valles) and the Indian Jehan Daruvala (Josef Kaufmann Racing), while Boccolacci and Defourny completed the top five. Norris beat the lap record at the Le Castellet track, held until then by Nyck de Vries from 2014. FR 2.0

DORIAN BOCCOLACCI "WINNING, AND NOTHING ELSE!" The motivation of young driver from Var driver has never been stronger. He is preparing to take the wheel of a Formula Renault with Team Tech 1 Racing on a busy schedule with undisguised pleasure as he loves the Eurocup and NEC.

A

t 17, Dorian Boccolacci has had a difficult season in the FIA European F3 Championship where he managed a few strokes of brilliance like his 5th place at Spa-Francorchamps or his three consecutive good results at the Norisring, 6th, 8th and 8th. But his overall running deficit did not allow him to fight as consistently at the forefront as he deserved. In adversity, he developed a steely resolve to rebound this year in Formula Renault. "For me, it's not a move down to FR 2.0!" said Dorian. "I am here to continue to progress. My goal has not changed: I'm only interested in victory. The Formula Renault 2.0 is an excellent car for this and my first winter test in December confirmed that this car suits me very well. Without being superstitious, I am happy to use my lucky number 9! "

AUTO

"Beyond the car itself, it's the team that matters. On this point, the choice of Tech 1 Racing is excellent. Simon and Sarah Abadie's team is renowned for its technical skills but also for its human qualities. I am happy to race with them and I am confident that they will bring me everything I need to move forward to victory. Their welcome to me has already shown that the trust is mutual." Tech 1 Racing has proven itself for many years in 2.0 and 3.5. The Toulouse team has an enviable prize list with the biggest names in motorsport such as Brendon Hartley, Charles Pic, the late Jules Bianchi, Daniel Ricciardo, JeanEric Vergne and more recently Pierre Gasly and Anthoine Hubert. Undoubtedly Dorian has found a good place in the 2016 Formula Renault 2.0 testing alongside Hugo Sadeleer, Sacha Fenestraz and Gabriel Aubry. "The presence of these three drivers in the team does not worry me at all, quite the opposite. We can work more effectively to bring the car to the point at every meeting. Then, once the start is given, all the drivers are adversaries to fight against and I am determined to give the maximum in each race to reach my goal." Physical fitness has never been a concern for Dorian, but he is visibly even sharper than usual. Always motivated, he is facing the 2016 season with a mind strengthened by the trials from last year. 14 races are on the programme as part of the Eurocup and the NEC (Northern European Cup) for which he knows most of the circuits. The official collective tests held at Motorland confirmed the great form of the French driver who set the third fastest time of the two days of testing, despite some technical problems at the end of the session. "Being back at the top of the table is motivating and gives me even more desire to work hard. These tests enabled us to take away many positive points. I learned the Motorland Arag贸n circuit while posting the fastest time of Sunday afternoon. The adaptation has been fast, although I could still have done better, but we were there primarily to prepare for the first qualifying taking place at this track in April."
