Student Achievement Focus Area: Instruction

This three day workshop series is designed to model the integrated instructional strategies that not only build student achievement in essential literacy practices, but develop rigorous critical thinking skills in social studies. Using inquiry-based investigation, K-5 social studies teachers can examine the most recent curricular changes in each of the social studies disciplines. Effective assessment practices will be modeled that incorporate skills in content area literacy, technology, and increased levels of rigor and resources for formative and summative assessments will be shared.

School Improvement Category: Teaching for Learning

The earliest years of a child’s elementary education are THE best time to help students build a strong foundation in both social studies and content area literacy. Yet, at best, only one of these essential skill sets are accomplished by 3rd grade; at worst—neither are achieved. How can children suddenly shift from simply decoding words to drawing meaning from complex text about unfamiliar topics in social studies?

Innovative strategies that integrate Michigan’s content standards and expectations and disciplinary skills from the C3 Framework will be modeled along with access to shared instructional resources designed to improve literacy skills. Shift happens! Now more than ever before, the integration of rigorous, skill-based instruction and literacy standards is critical for students to be successful in social studies. How can this be achieved without a HUGE overhaul of curriculum in each grade level or social studies course? No worries! Through inquiry-based investigation, this three day series for social studies teachers in grades 6-12 examines the most recent curricular changes in social studies including in-depth analysis of the updated content expectations and impending changes to assessment at the State level.

Medications administration guidelines from the Michigan Department of Education require training for non-nursing staff on the use of an epinephrine auto-injector conducted under the supervision of, and shall include evaluation by a licensed, registered professional nurse. In order to receive a renewed (or new) prescription (RX) for the 2016-2017 school year from Dr. Johansen of the Berrien County Health Department, it is a requirement of at least one person per building within a district to be retrained or newly trained. With your prescription, you will have the opportunity to apply for free epi-pens. Remember, each school building with 10 or more instructional and administrative staff is required to have at least two employees trained and schools with less than 10 staff are required to have at least one trained staff member. You are certainly encouraged to have more staff trained than the required to be better equipped in the event of an anaphylactic reaction.

If students’ weekly goals in reading revolve around earning a grade or a calculation, students will not be adequately prepared for the rigorous reading expectations of college and career. Students should be reading because they can’t put the book down, not because they need the “A” in the course to maintain their GPA. Teachers must work to refine the essential ‘with-it-ness’ characteristic of engaged teachers: these teachers watch, pay attention, respond to students, and seek the spark that says students are thinking.
