Suds & Cocktails Written by Rosemarie Stephens

A brewing company that brews beer with equal parts flavor, complexity, and sessionability – that’s how Hop City Brewing can best be described. There are two guys behind Hop City Brewing – Kevin and John - and the Canadian natives have been brewing for two decades. The Barking Squirrel is their flagship brew. At 5% ABV, the Barking Squirrel is an amber lager with a distinct rich burnt orange color. Brewed with nothing but beer goodness, Barking Squirrel’s pleasant aroma and bitterness comes from a blend of hops that are perfectly balanced by a caramel malt sweetness.Did you know the first batch of Barking Squirrel was brewed in John’s kitchen? That’s pretty awesome! Now, there are two things I love about this beer – the name and the taste! The Barking Squirrel is one of those brews that goes down great on a warm summer day, and even better on a crisp fall night. It’s definitely an “anytime beer” and it’s one I plan to stock in my fridge! If an amber lager isn’t your preference, then you’ll absolutely love their

HOPBOT IPA. Programmed with five west coast American hops, HOPBOT IPA brings out waves of absurd citrus and tropical aroma and flavor. The Citra, Centennial, Mosaic, Summit and Willamette hops are perfectly balanced by a solid malt backbone. With a 7.1 % ABV, HOPBOT IPA packs quite a punch! First things first – this IPA is a pretty nice looking beer. It has a beautiful amber color and you instantly get a whiff of the sweet aroma. You can immediately tell there are fruity hops. Now for the taste - it’s very similar to the aroma! Upon first sip you get the sweetness and then its followed up by the bitterness. It finishes with a bit more sweetness and a citrus hop after taste. This IPA is a really great balance of sweet and bitter. What I love most about the beer is the appearance. It’s truly a great IPA with awesome body and incredibly flavor. Do yourself a favor and pick up a six-pack of this – it’s a can’t miss! - NWIE

Halloween Costume

A bald man with a wooden leg gets invited to a Halloween party. He doesn’t know what costume to wear to hide his head and his leg so he writes to a costume company to explain his problem. A few days later he received a parcel with the following note: Dear Sir, Please find enclosed a pirate’s outfit. The spotted handkerchief will cover your bald head and, with your wooden leg, you will be just right as a pirate. Very truly yours, Acme Costume Co. The man thinks this is terrible because they have emphasized his wooden leg and so he writes a letter of complaint. A week goes by and he receives another parcel and a note, which says: Dear Sir, Please find enclosed a monk’s costume. The long robe will cover your wooden leg and, with your bald head, you will really look the part. Very truly yours, Acme Costume Co. Now the man is really upset since they have gone from emphasizing his wooden leg to emphasizing his bald head so again he writes the company another nasty letter of complaint. The next day he gets a small parcel and a note, which reads: Dear Sir, Please find enclosed a bottle of molasses and a bag of crushed nuts. Pour the molasses over your bald head, pat on crushed nuts, stick your wooden leg up your ass and go as a caramel apple. Very truly yours, Acme Costume Co.

A Modest Man & a Drunk

Big Shots Valparaiso, IN

An extremely modest man was in the hospital for a series of tests, the last of which had left his bodily systems extremely upset. Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, he decided the latest episode was another and stayed put. He suddenly filled his bed with diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond his ability to remain rational. In a complete loss of composure he jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window. A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, and swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet. As the drunk stood there, unsteady on his feet, staring down at the sheets, a hospital security guard (barely containing his laughter) who had watched the whole incident walked up and asked, “What the heck is going on here! ?” The drunk, still staring down replied: “I think I just beat the shit out of a ghost”

NWI Event: Fallen Officer Nickolaus Schultz Fundraiser at Catch 22 - Merrillville IN by: Stephanie Vega It’s been one month since tragedy fell upon the Merrillville Police Department. 24-year-old police officer Nickolaus Schultz died two days after being shot during an ambush at a condo unit. Schultz was the first Merrillville police officer to be killed in the line of duty. The community, family members, and friends are still trying to recover after this young life was taken too soon. People who were touched by Schultz are doing whatever they can to remember him and now his fellow officers are stepping up to do an event in his honor. The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 168 is teaming up with Catch 22 in Merrillville to put on a fundraising event for the fallen officer. FOP President Curtis Minchuk is hoping to raise a generous amount of funds for a memorial, and to send officers to Washington D.C. for a special service to honor Schultz. “We are going to try and hit our goal of $40,000-$50,000,” explained Minchuk. “We want to build a really nice memorial in front of the police station that will last forever. We also want to send Nick’s crew to Washington D.C. in May of 2015 for National Police Officers Week. They have a wall, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, there where they add the names of officers killed in the line of duty. They’ll be adding Nick to the wall so we want his crew there to honor him.”

On October 18, Catch 22 Bar and Grill, located at 500 E. 81st Avenue in Merrillvillewill be hosting an Octoberfest to benefit Nick Schultz. This event will kick off at 3pm and costs only $5 to get in. Your entry fee includes music from Mr. Funnyman (4pm-6pm), Planetary Blues (6:30pm-8:30pm) and Alien Syndicate (9:00pm-11:00pm). All three bands are donating their time for this cause. This family friendly event will also feature a kid’s area. “We are going to have a whole kid’s area,” explained Minchuk. “Our plan is to have a magician in the beginning of the event and get a face painter. We also have the people over at Jak’s Warehouse who is donating stuff for the kids.” It’s expected to be a packed event – after all Nick Schutlz was a hometown hero. “We’ve had so much support from the community, I know people will want to come out in honor of Nick,” said Minchuk. “And we are having a tent so this event will go on rain or shine!” Sam Adams will be sponsoring the event. There will be drink sales inside and outside of the bar. Northwest Indiana’s own Tom Lounges will be on hand at the event serving as an MC. Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch as well as Lake County Sheriff John Buncich are expected to make an appearance. For more information, go to facebook.com/ events/363739647111031/?ref=br_tf. Married Couple

A couple was invited to a swanky masked Halloween party. She got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone. He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed, and there was no need of his good time being spoiled by not going. So he took his costume and away he went. The wife, after sleeping soundly for one hour, awakened without pain, and as it was still early, she decided to go to the party. In as much as her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him. She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice chick he could and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife went up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his partner high and dry and devoted his time to the new stuff that had just arrived. She let him go as far as he wished naturally, since he was her husband. Finally he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed, so off they went to one of the cars and had a little bang. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home and put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what explanation he would make for his behavior. She was sitting up reading when he came in and asked what kind of a time he had. He said, “Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you’re not there.” Then she asked, “Did you dance much?” He replied, “I’ll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening. But the guy I loaned my costume to sure had a great time!”

The name Verona Pizza means something to pizza buffs in Northwest Indiana. The name means a certain type of pizza; a pizza that is distinctively tasty. And although all the different Verona Pizza locations are independently owned, when you acquire the name you acquire the recipe. And you are supposed to stick to it. But at Verona Pizza VI in Merrillville, it wasn’t always that way. The prior owner at the time (from May to August) wasn’t following the recipe and the patrons of the establishment knew it. Business fell off accordingly, and on August 12th, new ownership took the reins. And with new ownership came a return to the origi-

nal Verona Pizza recipe and tradition. The new owner, John Probus, worked at the original Verona Pizza in Hammond and the General Manager, Billy Peach, worked at Verona Pizza IV in Portage. And the new management is dedicated to the Verona Pizza tradition, and wants Northwest Indiana to know it. “We took over from people who weren’t using the Verona recipe,” said Peach. “But we’re not skimping on anything. All of the products on our pizzas are fresh. We are grinding our own cheese and making our own dough. We want people to know that the original Verona Pizza recipe is back.” “We want everyone to know that Verona Pizza VI

is under new management and we are out to regain our customers,” continued Peach. “We are not cutting any corners and we want our customers to know that they will be getting what they pay for – original Verona Pizza.” The restaurant is also offering beef sandwiches, spaghetti, mostaccioli, and rib tip dinners, as well as wings, gyros, salads and appetizers. In addition, Verona Pizza VI is also serving specialty pizzas daily. And between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm daily, Verona VI is serving pizza by the slice. For $3.00 a patron can

get a slice of pizza and a can of pop; for $5.00 you can get two slices and a can of pop. “We are getting an oven hood in here so we will be offering more on our menu in about a month,” said Peach. “But for now, we want to get the message out that this location IS Verona Pizza once again.” Verona Pizza VI is located at 27 West 80th Place in Merrillville and the hours are from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and from 11:00 am till 11:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The phone number is 219-736-2444. - NWIE

NWI EVENTS

2nd Annual Sout Pocket Billiards Playing pool, or pocket billiards as it is more properly known, is one of the most popular participant sports in America. And Northwest Indiana is a hotbed for playing pool. There are pool halls throughout the area and just about every bar or corner tavern has at least one pool table. And many people have a table in their den, basement or family room. There are players of all types as well, from casual or occasional players, to those who take the game more seriously and play in a league or multiple leagues. Because of this universal appeal, for the second consecutive year the Majestic Star Casino located in Buffington Harbor in Gary is hosting the 2nd Annual South Shore Midwest Pocket Billiards Championships from Wednesday, October 15th to Sunday, October 19th. The event is sponsored in part by the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority and will be directed by the Greater Midwest Poolplayer Association. Cecil Messer, the founding member of the GMPA, is thrilled to be bringing the event back to the Majestic Star and Northwest Indiana for the second time. “It’s great to be able to bring a national event back here to our backyard again,” said Messer. “Last year we had over 400 entries and players from nine states, and this year we have added $5,000 to the player awards total.” Eight-time World Champion and Billiard Congress

of America Hall of Fame member Nick Varner returns again this year to put on several exhibitions over the course of the event for players and fans alike. Also on hand for the event this year is another BCA Hall of Fame member and former two time World Champion, Robin Bell Dodson. She will be available for challenge matches, pictures, and autographs. The event is open to any interested player, but the team events are restricted to players who are members of a league. All events are restricted to amateur players only, and all players must be 21 years of age or older and a dress code will be enforced. Everything kicks off with the Early Bird 9-Ball Championships on Wednesday, October 15th. Thursday events include the Senior 8-Ball Championships and the Sin-

th Shore Midwest s Championships 8

gles 8-Ball Championships and on Friday the 3 Person Team Championships begin. There are several divisions within each event and this year a recreational player event has been added. All play is governed by World Pool Players Association standardized rules on 7’ bar box pool tables and professional referees will be on hand. Nick Varner will meet and greet with players and spectators alike in the Event Center located near the main entrance at Majestic Star on Thursday. On Friday evening at 7:00 pm, Varner will put on his first shot skill exhibition and will perform one -of-a-kind trick shots that are guaranteed to amaze the audience. Varner will perform again on Saturday with two shows; with the first scheduled for 3:00 pm and the second scheduled for 7:00 pm. After each show Varner will be available to pose for pic-

tures with fans and to sign autographs. Majestic Star is offering special hotel player rates for event participants (use discount code “GMPA Pool”) and there are many restaurants available at Majestic Star for dining. “The people at Majestic Star have bent over backwards to be the perfect host,” said Messer. “After last year’s event, they asked us to come back again and this year they have cranked it up a notch.” “We want the event to grow and get bigger and they have good people at Majestic Star who have worked hard to help make it happen,” continued Messer. For more information about the event or to obtain entry forms on-line, interested parties can visit The Greater Midwest Poolplayers Association website at www.gmpaonline.info or www.gopolaypool. com. For tournament inquiries call Messer at 219465-8101. Admission is free for spectators who wish to watch any of the events or exhibitions. Julie Ann Mitchell has been the league operator of the GMPA for over twenty years. She is also the president of the ACS Indiana association as well as the secretary for Illinois ACS and the National American Cuesports Association. For league information and further details regarding tournament contact her at 219-762-0209. - NWIE

The Devil

A woman, whose husband often came home drunk, decided to cure him of the habit. One Halloween night, she put on a devil suit and hid behind a tree to intercept him on the way home. When her husband came by, she jumped out and stood before him with her red horns, long tail, and pitchfork. “Who are you?” he asked. “I’m the Devil!” she responded. “Well, come on home with me,” he said, “I married your sister!”

Written by: Daniel Anthony Photos by: Jerome Hindmon When Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant first opened in Valparaiso in 2011, it was under a different ownership group. Current owners Mirtha and Samuel Anguianos had dined there, and had liked the food. But the couple had never been in the restaurant business, and thus they had no inkling that they were soon to become the new owners. Samuel, who works at Ford, had always wanted to own a bar. Mirtha, who had worked in the cafeteria at the University of Chicago and in the Audio-Visual Department at Merrillville High School, wasn’t very keen on the idea of owning a bar. Mirtha had always wanted to own a dress shop. So when the couple found out that the restaurant was for sale, they compromised, bought the place and took over as the new owners on December 3rd, 2013. “My husband wanted to own a bar, but I was against that,” said Mirtha. “And I wanted to own a dress shop so we had never even thought about being in the restaurant business.”

“But we had eaten there before and the food was good,” continued Mirtha. “And then believe it or not, we found the place for sale on Craigslist. My daughter had always said that I should open a restaurant and since everybody wants to be their own boss, we met in the middle and bought the place.” The couple shortened the name of the place to Margarita’s Bar and Grill and set about running the business. And since the food was good, they didn’t have to change much, but slowly and surely they started to put their own stamp on the business. “The thing I always go by at a Mexican restaurant is the Mexican rice,” said Mirtha. “And since we had eaten here before I knew the Mexican rice was good, so we kept the chef.” “I really didn’t change much about the menu. I just tweaked a few things to add my own flair,” continued Mirtha. “But slowly and surely we are making progress in other areas, fixing stuff up, like replacing the benches and the TV’s.”

One thing the Anguianos have tried to do since taking over is to offer a little more variety by doing things just a little bit differently in terms of entertainment. “We’re trying to provide some different stuff,” said Mirtha. “We have karaoke every Friday night and then on Saturdays we have acoustic music or a DJ.” “We’ve had some comedy nights, and we’re giving away Bears tickets too,” continued Mirtha. “Anyone who comes in during a Bears game wearing Bears apparel gets an entry in the drawing.” The tickets are for the Vikings game on November 16th, and the winner will be drawn on November 9th, so restaurant patrons have a chance to get at least five more entries before the drawing. “We also have what we call Lush and Brush,” laughed Mirtha. “Lush and Brush is where the ladies

can paint wood plaques with stencils while the guys watch the game. And the guys can paint too if they like.” Margarita’s Bar and Grill is located at 21 East Lincolnway in Valparaiso. The restaurant is open from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Wednesday and from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm on Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays the hours are 11:00 am to midnight. “We have a variety of things going on so we are not just another restaurant,” said Mirtha. “And of course, the Mexican food is delicious.” - NWIE
