Department of Art Mark Bradley-‐Shoup participated in numerous exhibitions this year, including Divisible at Front Warehouse in Dayton, OH, Enormously Tiny at Nahcotta Gallery in Portsmouth, ND, and The Price is Right at David Lusk Gallery in Nashville, TN. Mark likewise secured gallery representation with David Lusk, a prominent commercial gallery, where he had a solo exhibition in April. His exhibition was the cover feature in Nashville Arts magazine. Mark’s collage work was featured in Collage: Contemporary Artists Hunt and Gather, Cut and Paste, Mash Up and Transform written by Danielle Krysa and published by Chronicle Books. Mark was also a visiting artist at Georgia State University where he lectured on his work and conducted studio visits with MFA candidates. In terms of service, Mark represented the department at Art Start, an ArtsBuild initiative intended to provide support to high school students in Chattanooga who hope to pursue careers in the arts. Mark likewise serves as a facilitator with Mark Making, which strives to empower individuals and transform communities through public art projects, with a focus on the underserved. Recently he contributed to the striking mural A Dream Built on Faith located in Whiteside Park at MLK Boulevard and Palmetto Street. * * * As a partner with Widgets & Stone design studio, Matt Greenwell worked with a range of professional clients this year, including Forté Fitness, the Chattanooga Visitor’s Bureau, Easy Bistro, Mannington Carpets, Covenant College, and Collier Construction. Matt likewise: designed and produced a limited-‐ edition catalog and long play record box set to accompany Cooley/Lewis’s collaborative project Harmony of the Spheres; presented at the 2014 NASAD Conference, discussing practical strategies to promote student empowerment and inspire students to develop new ideas, concepts, and ways of thinking and doing; provides his leadership on the Board of Directors of The Open Press, a Chattanooga-‐based non-‐profit print collective he co-‐founded; serves on the Commission on Accreditation for NASAD, reviewing institutional applications for NASAD membership and applying the Association’s standards and guidelines to ensure the high degree of excellence of its member programs. * * * Katie Hargrave was invited to participate in the Plains Art Museum’s Living As Form (The Nomadic Version), an important survey of the past 20 years of socially engaged art practice. The museum acquired two of her works for its permanent collection. She also moderated a roundtable on ethics in social practice for Central Time Centric in association with Living as Form. Central Time Centric was

described as “a landmark symposium” dedicated to exploring the role of art in social change, environmental issues, community development, and strengthened human connections. For How to Un-‐make an American Quilt, Katie and collaborator Amber Ginsburg worked with members of the Rogers Park community in Chicago to disassemble a quilt “stitch after stitch,” metaphorically unlocking the “raw potential” contained within communal labor. At ACRE Projects in Chicago, Katie exhibited Five Readers on the Road, which consists of the recitation of the underlined passages of numerous found copies of Kerouac’s iconic novel. Katie was likewise invited to participate in exhibitions at The Washington Project for the Arts in Washington, DC, George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, The University of Minnesota’s Nash Gallery, and The Institute for Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, PA. Katie also secured a ThinkAchieve grant to fund technology and community research, and co-‐authored a grant from UNFoundation to support a student outreach project entitled NeighborFloat. * * * Phillip Lewis, with the aid of a Summer Fellowship, traveled extensively this year in association with his ongoing research project Synonym. He spent the summer researching one of the last remaining Synanon sects in Germany, perusing UCLA’s exhaustive Synanon archive, and visiting key historical sites both in the United States and abroad. Phillip received an Ansel Adams Research Fellowship from The Center for Creative Photography this year. In addition to a monetary award, this fellowship will permit Professor Lewis and his collaborator Peter Happel Christian to access the Center’s archives as they research material for their eleven-‐ volume book Land_AA. Phillip and another collaborator Kevin Cooley were invited to create a site-‐specific immersive installation titled In the Valley of the Sun at Sonoma State University. And their exhibition My God, It’s Full of Stars traveled to Pierogi Gallery in New York, accompanied by a limited edition long play record box set. This year Phillip also participated in group exhibitions at Sonce Alexander Gallery in Los Angeles, Austin Peay State University, and the Hunter Museum of American Art. * * * Andrew O’Brien, after relocating his photography studio to Chattanooga this fall, resumed work on his Hardscapes series. After responding to a national call for proposals, he was invited to create an installation at Seed Space in Nashville, TN. Talking Talking House consists of a custom-‐built deck and a series of Realty Electronics Talking House radio transmitters, which combine to produce “mirror images of [domestic] desire.”

2

Andrew is also actively involved with the Society for Photographic Education, and served as a portfolio reviewer at the 2015 national conference. Andrew co-‐authored a grant from UNFoundation to support a student outreach project entitled NeighborFloat. * * * This past spring Lauren Ruth was invited to participate in Cannonball Run III at Zeitgeist Gallery in Nashville, TN, where she exhibited four new sculptures completed with the support of a UTC Faculty Research Grant. Lauren co-‐authored a grant from the UNFoundation to support a student outreach project entitled NeighborFloat. Likewise, she authored a ThinkAchieve grant to support a 3-‐day creative retreat at the Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro, NC, in which students curated participatory exhibitions using the museum’s nontraditional collection of objects. Lauren was a visiting artist at The University of Tennessee as well as Dartmouth College, where she lectured on her research and conducted studio visits with students. Lauren’s ongoing collaborative project The Shaft enacts social rituals to critique gender and class mores. This year The Shaft presented a new performance and site-‐specific installation called Wedding Treatment Package in conjunction with Force Field in Philadelphia, PA. Lauren serves as faculty advisor for the department’s student project space Apothecary. She has expanded programming, arranging experimental musical performances and collaborative events, coordinating exchange exhibitions, and hosting artists of national renown. * * * Aggie Toppins began this academic year by rebranding her own practice, launching The Official Studio and The Unofficial Press. Through The Official Studio, Professor Toppins works with small businesses, non-‐profit organizations, and cultural institutions to help her clients “communicate who they are and what they do best”; through The Unofficial Press she deploys publications and self-‐initiated, independent design projects as “platforms for critical inquiry” (citing separate, linked websites). Aggie presented at the Prowalk Probike Proplace conference in Pittsburgh, PA on her work with the City of Chattanooga’s Transportation Department. Aggie’s work as a designer continues to garner national attention. This year her identity design for Range Projects was featured in GD USA, a monthly news and information magazine for and about the professional design community. And her book cover design for American Neolithic (C&R Press) won an American Graphic Design Award.

3

For Print Only, a prominent and respected design blog, published a feature article describing Aggie’s magazine series Octagon as “a forum for experimentation and exploration of the possibilities within a reading experience.” Aggie was invited to participate in Art Multiples in Chicago, IL, which showcases the work of artists from across the country who work in multiples. And she was invited by Printed Matter to participate in the prestigious LA Art Book Fair held at The Geffen Contemporary at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, one of the prominent art institutions in the United States. She likewise exhibited her work at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN and Asheville Bookworks in Asheville, NC. Aggie’s video There Yet was selected for Open Spaces, a revitalization initiative of The River City Company featuring year-‐long exhibitions in empty storefronts in downtown Chattanooga. Aggie also has a keen interest in community service. She serves on the board of directors of the Glass House Collective, lending design expertise in support of the Glass House mission for strategic and entrepreneurial community development. She was invited by the Chattanooga Public Library to curate a collection of zines and independent publications in conjunction with its visionary Fourth Floor programming. And she is a highly sought-‐after figure in the community, facilitating zine workshops at The Chattery and the AIGA, presenting at the Next City Vanguard Conference, and providing interviews to The Pulse and WUTC to promote Zine Fest 2014. Similarly, Aggie serves on the Chancellor’s Enterprise Center Committee, working with other UTC faculty and staff, The Company Lab, Mayor Coppinger’s office, and various community stakeholders to meaningfully position UTC within the city’s Innovation District. * * * Gavin Townsend is the lead author for the Society for Architectural Historian’s Archipedia Project for the state of Tennessee. This year he wrote and/or edited 22 peer reviewed encyclopedia entries, including essays on: the Joel Soloman Building and the Phillip Livingston House, both of which are located in Chattanooga; and the Obelisk Flour Building, the Peabody Hotel, the Mason Temple, and the Arena Pyramid, all in Memphis. The Archipedia Project constitutes a significant peer-‐reviewed publication, with the ultimate objective of creating an interactive, media-‐rich online encyclopedia of American architecture. Ultimately Gavin and his team will visit, research, and develop original scholarship on 100 of the most notable structures in the state. In October of 2014, Gavin delivered a paper at the annual conference of the Southeast Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH) on Richard Neutra’s Livingston House. * * * Christina Vogel was awarded a 2014 Research and Creative Activity Grant from the College of Arts and Sciences to complete a four-‐week residency at the Vermont Studio Center, the largest artists’ residency program in the United States, and to initiate an ambitious new body of work.

4

Christina’s creative research has been recognized twice for honors this past year, an award of distinction in painting in the 2014 Masur Museum of Art national juried exhibition, and an honorable mention in the Valdosta National at Valdosta State University. Six of Christina’s paintings from the Observed series were included in an exhibition at the Museum of Nebraska Art featuring recipients of the Nebraska Arts Council artist fellowship.
