• Another black bear seen near Approximately 11,000 acres, this area is on the edge of the the Dollar General Market in Cumberland Plateau with magnificent views of the valley, Watts South Harriman. Bar Lake, and even the Smoky Mountains on a clear day. The • Many Roane Countians laying overlook, believed to be one of the highest in the Cumberlands, is in loungers most of the night to the best point of access to this area. Follow signs for Mt Roosevelt Scenic Overlook from both directions. The Overlook and Tower are at the end of the road.

Teenage friends When I was a little girl, few people in the Gap had TVs. We didn’t get one till I was in grade school. All TVs were shown in black and white, and there was nothing on the air to see until around 6 o’clock in the evening. The old screen pattern would come on about 9 p.m. and the TV stations were off the air until the next morning. We didn’t have cablevision or satellites. We had an antenna inside a metal pole that was attached to the house. We could get Channels 6, 9, and 10 out of Knoxville, and on a clear night, we could get Channel 9 and 12 out of Chattanooga. If the wind blew hard, or you wanted to watch a different channel, you had to go outside and turn the antenna. You’d turn the pole until someone from inside would yell, “Now”. I remember us watching the old Grocho Marx and Amos & Andy Shows. That was Daddy’s favorite show. Saturday mornings were the best for us kids. We watched Gene Autry and Roy Rogers fight the bad guys and come out without a scratch. After a few years, there were game shows, such as What’s My Line? and Truth or Consequences. We watched horror movies on Friday and Saturday nights until we would fall asleep in the floor in front of the thing. I remember when I saw my first color TV in someone’s house. We were Trick or Treating in Pine Hills and I saw one playing through their front door. I thought how lucky they were to be able to afford a color TV. Probably in the early 60s, we got our first color TV. Kids from all over the neighborhood would drop by at night to watch it. I recall the first time NBC showed their color programming icon which was the peacock. We were amazed at the beautiful colors that were displayed when Bonanza was shown in living color. Again, our kids will never experience the simple things of life like watching a TV for the first time, or seeing a new program in color. All the advances in technology has taken away something our kids will never know--they won’t realize what they have, because they never had to do without it.

Top 8 Wedding Movies 8 - My Big, Fat Greek Wedding Dowdy, plain Toula (Nia Vardalos) feels like a failure in the eyes of her traditional Greek parents. At 30, she's single and thinks she'll never find a Greek man to settle down with. "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding," released in 2002, is a charming and comedic look into Greek-American culture -- over-the-top stereotypes and all. Toula's luck changes when she meets shy American Ian Miller (John Corbett), but it's a relationship that her parents have a hard time accepting. After Ian pops the question, Toula's large Greek family begins interfering with every last wedding detail, making the affair all about their ethnic heritage. In the end, the wedding may be big, but we can promise you that the laughs are even bigger. 7 - The Wedding Singer Who doesn't like to reminisce about trends like acid wash jeans, big hair and Day-Glo sweatshirts? The 1998 comedy "The Wedding Singer" is one of the best nostalgia films dedicated to the 1980s, but it's also a classic wedding flick as well. The year is 1985, and Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler), a wedding singer, meets sweet waitress Julia (Drew Barrymore) at one of his gigs. Both are engaged to the wrong people, and after several humorous events, the pair discovers they're in love. The ending not only does it include a cameo by rock star Billy Idol, but who can resist singing along to Robbie's good-humored ballad "Grow Old with You"?
6 - Bride Wars The 2009 comedy "Bride Wars" is a laugh-out-loud movie. Emma Allen (Anne Hathaway) and Liv Lerner (Kate Hudson) have been best friends since childhood, and both dream of one day walking down the aisle at the glamorous New York City Plaza Hotel. The trouble brews as they realize in horror that the Plaza has double-booked their weddings on the same day. Both refuse to change their wedding date, resulting in a battle of the brides so ugly that they resort to everything from hair dye to orange tanning spray as ammunition. 5 - Father of the Bride (original) This charmer is one even your in-laws are sure to love. The original 1950s-era "Father of the Bride" is full of maudlin moments from a seemingly simpler time, but it's Spencer Tracy's refreshing snarkiness as the father of the bride that we love. The overall appeal is clear: A wedding's more than gowns and guest lists; it's a time to share your feelings with those you love. 4 - The Wedding Date "The Wedding Date," released in 2005, gets a top spot for an inside look at family dynamics during an extended wedding weekend. Debra Messing pretends a male escort is her loving boyfriend as part of a ploy to make her ex-fiance jealous. Somewhat predictably, Messing's character falls for her paid muse. We favor the subplots that provide a delicious peek at the sometimes-twisted love and loyalty sisters exhibit under pressure.
3 - Wedding Crashers This movie's fictional account is something we'd recommend watching more than once. "Wedding Crashers" makes the top five because we can view it with our best girlfriends -- or our entire wedding party -- and laugh off a few prenuptial jitters. The 2005 comedy stars cuties Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as womanizers dedicated to their craft; they make sneaking into weddings an almost-adorable pastime. 2 - The Princess Bride An '80s classic, "The Princess Bride" has sweet Westley uttering, "As you wish" to his beloved Buttercup with great regularity. It is, in fact, all he ever says to the object of his affection. Lest you begin to think this is just a "kissing movie," there is plenty of action, too. Fencing, torture, giants, chases, revenge and a monster or two keep the story moving in a Homer's "Odyssey" kind of way -- which is why it's great for date night with your beau. And # 1 is - The Hangover If your impending nuptials have left you in need of a good laugh, press play for "The Hangover." We know you've probably already seen the 2009 comedy, but it's worth a second sit-through for the belly laughs alone. There's just something so right about losing your soon-to-wed friend during a night of partying in Vegas. Plus, everything turns out OK in the end, which is really the moral of any good wedding movie.

Micheal Andre Goins age 41, of Harriman passed away May 10, 2014. He was an employee of the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority as a Public Safety Officer. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member at the American Legion Post 232. Micheal was respected by everyone that knew him and always had a huge smile that always blessed anyone that was around. Thousands showed up to Richard Pickell Gymnasium at Harriman High School to pay their respects on May 15th. Words cannot express the hurt that the people that knew him will feel, he was true individual. He had a wife (April Goins) and two daughters (Haylee & Micaela Goins) He is preceded in death by his grandfathers Herbert Goins Sr., Jaybee Dickens Sr., cousins Eric Moore & Charles Gallaher, father Rue Eskridge, grandfather Elder Rue Eskridge grandmother Catherine Eskridge. The Minister and the Smoke Detector It was common for the Minister to invite the children to the front of the church for a short talk before they left for their lessons. On one occasion, the visual aid was a smoke detector. He asked the children if anyone knew what it meant when an alarm sounded from the smoke detector. Young Johnny raised his hand and said, "It means Daddy's cooking dinner."

THE GROCERY LIST
Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food. John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once. Visualizing the family needs, she said: 'Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.' John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store. Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, 'Do you have a grocery list?' Louise replied, 'Yes sir.' 'O.K.' he said, 'put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries.' Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed. The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.. The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, 'I can't believe it.' The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more. The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement. It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said: 'Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.' The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence. Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a hundred-dollar bill to the grocer and said; 'It was worth every penny of it. Only God Knows how much a prayer weighs.'

The Heavenly Reveal The temporary Sunday School teacher was struggling to open a combination lock on the supply cabinet. She had been told the combination, but couldn't quite remember it. Finally she went to the pastor's study and asked for help. The pastor came into the room and began to turn the dial. After the first two numbers he paused and stared blankly for a moment. Finally he looked serenely heavenward and his lips moved silently. Then he looked back at the lock, and quickly turned to the final number, and opened it. The teacher was amazed. "I'm in awe at your faith, pastor," she said. "It's really nothing," he answered. "The number is on a piece of tape on the ceiling."

Get short-term relief from nicotine withdrawal symptoms. As long as you're not on a low-sodium diet and you don't have peptic ulcers, drink two tablets dissolved in a glass of water at every meal. Soothe insect bites. Dissolve two tablets in a glass of water, dip a cloth into the solution, and place the cloth on the bite for twenty minutes.

What is Jello made of? Watch it wiggle. If you've ever eaten in a cafeteria or attended a cookout or family reunion, chances are good that your dessert and salad options included some form of Jell-O. Hundreds of recipes use Jell-O to create everything from your simple institutional-style gelatin squares to ornate designs that incorporate varied flavors, fruit and whipped toppings. Jell-O consists of four basic ingredients: •gelatin•water *food coloring •sugar or artificial sweetener and artificial flavors. How can one possibly mold Jell-O into so many different shapes? The gelatin in Jell-O is what allows you to get so creative -- but what exactly is gelatin, anyway? Gelatin is just a processed version of a structural protein called collagen that is found in many animals, including humans. Collagen makes up almost one-third of all the protein in the human body. Collagen is a fibrous protein that strengthens the body's connective tissues and allows them to be elastic that is, to stretch without breaking. As you get older, your body makes less collagen, and individual collagen fibers become increasingly cross-linked with each other. You might experience this as stiff joints from less flexible tendons, or wrinkles due to loss of skin elasticity. Gelatin can come from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hides and connective tissues. Today, the gelatin in Jell-O is most likely to come from pigskin. Collagen doesn't dissolve in water in its natural form, so it must be modified to make gelatin. Manufacturers grind the body parts and treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to dissolve the collagen. Then the pre-treated material is boiled. Controls at every step of the process ensure purity and safety. The materials are washed and filtered repeatedly. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down; the resulting product is a gelatin solution. That solution is chilled into a jelly-like material, cut and dried in a special chamber. At this point, the dried gelatin -- about 10 percent water -- is ground. If it's going to make Jell-O, it will be ground into a fine powder.

Then wipe or spray off with a hose. * Plastic Melted on Toaster * Nail polish remover will remove this easily. * Blenders & Food Processors * Let these clean themselves. Fill partway with warm water, add a drop of dishwashing liquid, cover and run at low speed. Run with clear water to rinse thoroughly. * If your range uses the permanent metal filters, clean them in the dishwasher. * Smelly Kitchen? Place a sliced lemon on a pie plate in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes. * Use the vacuum cleaner to quickly clean kitchen drawers without removing everything. Swiss Steak
1/2 cup sifted flour 2 Tablespoons oil 2 teaspoons salt 1 small onion, minced 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 cups diced tomatoes 1 (2 pound) round steak (1 1/2-inch thick) Preheat oven to 350° F. Mix flour, salt and pepper. Sprinkle mixture over steak. Pound mixture into steak with a meat mallet or potato masher. Pound evenly until the meat is about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 4 serving-size pieces. Heat the oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add the meat and cook, turning once, until browned on both sides (4-6 minutes). Transfer meat to a shallow baking dish. Add onions to tomatoes, stirring to combine. Pour over steak. Cover the dish with foil. Bake at 350 degrees F until the meat is tender when pierced with a fork, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
Spaghetti Squash 1 spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded 1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese 1onion, chopped 3 tablespoons sliced black olives 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet. Place spaghetti squash with cut sides down on the prepared baking sheet, and bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a sharp knife can be inserted with only a little resistance. Remove squash from oven and set aside to cool enough to be easily handled. Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion in oil until tender. Add garlic; cook and stir until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and cook until tomatoes are warmed through. Use a large spoon to scoop the stringy pulp from the squash and place in a medium bowl. Toss with the vegetables, feta cheese, olives, and basil. Serve warm.
Monkey Bread
4 cans refrigerated biscuits 1/2 cup white sugar 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 Tablespoons cinnamon 1 1/2 sticks butter (3/4 cup) 1/2 cup raisins (optional) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9-10 inch tube pan. Mix white sugar and cinnamon in a medium sized plastic bag. Cut the biscuits into halves or quarters and place six to eight biscuit pieces in the sugar cinnamon mix. Shake well. Arrange pieces in the bottom of the greased pan. Continue layering until all the biscuit pieces are coated and in the pan. If you are using raisins, place them among the biscuit pieces as you are layering. In a small saucepan, melt the butter with the brown sugar over medium heat. Boil for 1 minute. Pour over the layered biscuits. Bake for 35 minutes. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a plate. Pull apart and enjoy!
Icing Recipe
1/2 pound cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 pound butter 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 pound powdered sugar Allow cream cheese and butter to get to room temperature. Beat butter and cream cheese together in a large bowl with a mixer. Slowly add in the pound of powdered sugar. After all the powdered sugar is added mix for 12 minutes (do not mix less than that). When almost done, add in the extract and lemon juice.

Penny Pinchers Gravity. When cleaning your house, always clean from top to bottom. Gravity carries dust down onto lower surfaces. Prevent brooms from slipping when you prop them against a wall. Cut off the finger of an old rubber glove and slide over the handle. Streak-free, lint-free windows. Just use crumpled up pages of newspaper to wipe off your window cleaner. If you see streaks when finished, know which side they are on! When washing windows, use horizontal strokes on one side and vertical strokes on the other. Unclog your iron. Pour straight white vinegar through the iron. Make sure to rinse it out when the vinegar has done its magic. Remove a burned out light bulb from a recessed fixture. Since there isn't enough room for your fingers, you can make a little handle using duct tape. Avoid breaking light bulbs in your hand. Light bulbs can be hard to remove. Put a light coat of petroleum jelly on the threads of the new bulb. Remove furniture glue. After taking apart any piece of furniture for re-gluing, here's how to get rid of the old glue stuck in the joints: spray or brush vinegar into the joint. It usually works in minutes. It won't harm a finish and it leaves a white film that simply wipes off after it dries. Remove candle wax from carpets. Place a brown paper bag over the wax and gently run a warm iron over the bag. Shine linoleum floors. Drops of paraffin in water. "Wax" a floor. Add two tablespoons furniture polish and ½ cup vinegar to a bucket of warm water. Ceramic tile cleaner. ¼ cup baking soda, ½ cup white vinegar, and one cup household ammonia in bucket. Add one gallon warm water. Stir until baking soda dissolves. Wear rubber gloves and apply with scrub brush or sponge. Rinse. Wall cleaner. Mix ¼ cup washing soda, ¼ cup white vinegar, and ½ cup ammonia in a gallon of warm water Remove crayon from painted walls or painted wood. Spray the surface with WD-40 and wipe with a soft cloth. If residue remains, wipe the area with a little soapy water.

You can be a human lie detector It's easier than you think to become a human lie detector. Look for Suspicious Behaviors By themselves, each of these behaviors can just be signs of stress, or even a person's natural mannerisms. One can occur by chance, but when two or more of these behaviors suddenly appear at a moment when lying could be expedient, you should be skeptical. For example, when you ask a salesman how reliable that used car is, it suggests he's lying. Here's the top eight list of suspicious behaviors: •A change in the voice's pitch. •A change in the rate of speech. •A sudden increase in the number of "ums" and "ahs." •A change in eye contact. Normally, one makes eye contact one-quarter to one-half of the time. If suddenly, at the convenient moment to lie, he's staring at you or looking away, beware. •Turning his body away from you, even if just slightly. •Suddenly being able to see the white on the top and bottom of a person's eyes, not just the sides. •A hand reaching, even if momentarily, to cover part of the face, especially the mouth. •Nervous movement of feet or legs. Of course, in order to notice a change, you need a baseline. So you must first watch the person when talking about innocuous issues. A Mixed Signal Also look for mixed signals. When someone's telling the truth, her words, her face and her body language are all congruent. For example, if a person is honestly saying that she likes you, her face is usually relaxed, offering a gentle smile and warm eyes. Her body is calm and open. But when she's lying, something is usually inconsistent. In the most obvious case, she may be saying she likes you, but she's not smiling. She may even have a clenched fist. Better liars can muster a smile, but it doesn't look natural. Even better liars can put on a convincing smile, but their eyes aren't smiling. Still better liars can control their entire face, but their bodies seem closed or cold. Look for mismatches between words and body language. When you've gotten a signal -- a change in body language or a mixed signal that the person may be lying -- ask for more information about the same topic. Are those same lying signs apparent? That can confirm your suspicion. Of course, there's no foolproof way to detect lying. Some people are terrific at covering themselves up, especially if they are naturally emotionally flat or have practiced their lying skills over many years -- certain political leaders come to mind. But if you look for behavior changes and mixed signals at lying-expedient moments, you will improve your BS detector.

Interesting Facts About Lightening Bugs (Fireflies) Fireflies talk to each other with light. Fireflies emit light mostly to attract mates, although they also communicate for other reasons as well, such as to defend territory and warn predators away. In some species, only one sex lights up. In most, however, both sexes glow; often the male will fly, while females will wait in trees, shrubs and grasses to spot an attractive male. If she finds one, she'll signal it with a flash of her own. Fireflies produce “cold light.” Firefly lights are the most efficient lights in the world—100% of the energy is emitted as light. Compare that to an incandescent bulb, which emits 10% of its energy as light and the rest as heat, or a fluorescent bulb, which emits 90% of its energy as light. Because it produces no heat, scientists refer to firefly lights as “cold lights.” In a firefly's tail, you'll find two chemicals: luciferase and luciferin. Luciferin is heat resistant, and it glows under the right conditions. Luciferase is an enzyme that triggers light emission. ATP, a chemical within the firefly's body, converts to energy and initiates the glow. All living things, not just fireflies, contain ATP. Firefly eggs glow. Adult fireflies aren't the only ones that glow. In some species, the larvae and even the eggs emit light. Firefly eggs have been observed to flash in response to stimulus such as gentle tapping or vibrations. Fireflies have short lifespans. An adult firefly lives only long enough to mate and lay eggs—so they may not need to eat during their adult life stage. The larvae usually live for around a year, from mating season to mating season, before becoming adults and giving birth to the next generation. Fireflies are found on almost every continent. Fireflies love warm, humid areas. Because of this, they thrive in tropical regions as well as temperate zones—they come out in the summertime in these environments—on all continents except Antarctica. Fireflies thrive in forests, fields and marshes near lakes, rivers, ponds, streams and vernal pools. They need a moist environment to survive. Fireflies are medically and scientifically useful. The two chemicals found in a firefly's tail, luciferase and luciferin, light up in the presence of ATP. Every animal has ATP in its cells in amounts that are more or less constant—or should be. In diseased cells, the amount of ATP may be abnormal. If the chemicals from fireflies are injected into diseased cells, they can detect changes in cells that can be used to study many diseases, from cancer to muscular dystrophy. But that's not all they're used for. Electronic detectors built with these chemicals have been fitted into spacecraft to detect life in outer space, as well as food spoilage and bacterial contamination on earth. Fireflies don't make tasty prey. When attacked, fireflies shed drops of blood in a process known as “reflex bleeding.” The blood contains chemicals that taste bitter and can be poisonous to some animals. Because of this, many animals learn to avoid eating fireflies. Pet owners should never feed fireflies to lizards, snakes and other reptilian pets.

The Dog Days of Summer July 3 - August 11
Everyone knows that the “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines “dog days” as... 1 : the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere 2 : a period of stagnation or inactivity But where does the term come from? Why do we call the hot, sultry days of summer“dog days?” In ancient times, when the night sky was unobscured by artificial lights and smog different groups of peoples in different parts of the world drew images in the sky by “connecting the dots” of stars. The images drawn were dependent upon the culture: The Chinese saw different images than the Native Americans, who saw different pictures than the Europeans. These star pictures are now called constellations, and the constellations that are now mapped out in the sky come from our European ancestors. They saw images of bears, (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), twins, (Gemini), a bull, (Taurus), and others, including dogs, (Canis Major and Canis Minor). The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. Look for it in the southern sky (viewed from northern latitudes) during January. In the summer, however, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days” after the dog star. The conjunction of Sirius with the sun varies somewhat with latitude. And the “precession of the equinoxes” (a gradual drifting of the constellations over time) means that the constellations today are not in exactly the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Rome. Today, dog days occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. Although it is certainly the warmest period of the summer, the heat is not due to the added radiation from a far-away star, regardless of its brightness. No, the heat of summer is a direct result of the earth's tilt.

Play with your kids this summer 1. Volunteer. This one is first on my list because I think it’s really important to foster a giving spirit in children at even the youngest age. Check out local animal shelters and nursing homes to see if they allow kids to volunteer. Your family can adopt a grandparent, or even foster an animal that doesn’t have a home. If you live in a major city, there may even be a homeless shelter close to where you are located. Many homeless shelters are for families, so they will have kids. You can volunteer to read to the kids, or keep them entertained while the parents attend classes at the shelter. 2. Create a restaurant. You can get file folders and create menus, complete with pictures of foods that you will serve. You can do this at lunch time, in the kitchen, or you can play pretend with the kids at any time and serve play food instead. Convert an old entertainment center into a play kitchen, and you will be creating hours of play time for the kids. 3. Visit the library. The library is one of the best places for kids, no matter what time of the year it is! During the summer, many libraries have reading programs – complete with incentives! At the St. Louis Public Library, kids can read books and earn Six Flags tickets! Check out your local library to see what they offer. 4. Go camping – in your backyard. Even if you have a small backyard, you can set up a tent, and a campfire. Roast some marshmallows and hot dogs, or make some s’mores! 5. Plant a Garden. Kids love to get their hands dirty, and they will be more excited about eating the vegetables if they help grow them. Most of the time when people think of gardening, they think they don’t have enough space for it. But, even if you live in an apartment, you can have a garden of some type. Try starting out with an indoor herb garden, and going from there. You can even make a little gardening box outside with a few pieces of wood. You’d be amazed at what you can grow in small spaces! 6. Go swimming. If the thought of swimming in a lake (which is free) creeps you out, consider purchasing a membership to the local YMCA. Some have discounts for summer memberships, and all YMCAs have scholarships for those that cannot afford the full membership price. Also, try community pools. Some local pools may only charge $2 for admission, which is definitely a steal if you’re going to be there most of the day. Don’t forget the sunscreen! 7. Check out the parks. You may have been to the same park 100 times, but there are so many parks – why not find a new one? Try to find a new park to visit each week. Pack the bubbles, jump rope, soccer ball, and chalk, and have fun making it an adventure!

Camping with duct tape
Hold your tent closed: A damaged zipper could leave your tent door flapping in the wind. Stick the door shut, and keep the bugs and critters out. Splint a broken tent pole or fishing pole: Tape a stick to the broken area of your tent pole or fishing rod, and you might just get one last adventure out of it. Catch pesky flies: Roll off a few foot-long strips of duct tape and hang them from a branch or your tent or cabin rafters. The DT serves as flypaper and when you depart, you can roll up the tape to toss it in the trash. No need to use nasty chemicals, either. You can also wrap plastic water bottles with duct tape to prevent cracking and leaking. Make a spear: Strap your knife to a pole and you have a trusty spear to fend off beasts, or make one into your dinner. Create a shelter: With some trash bags and some duct tape, and you have a survival shelter roof, or sleeping bag cover, a wind break, or well, there are kits of possibilities. Wrap a sprained ankle: If you trip and sprain your ankle, wrap the ankle with duct tape to give it some support. Make butterfly bandage strips: Cut two small strips of DT, and add a smaller strip across their centers (sticky side to sticky side) to create a makeshift butterfly suture. Make a sling: Fold a length of DT down the middle, so that it is half the original width and no longer exposing a sticky side. Use the strap to make a sling for a busted arm. Affix bandages: Place a sterile dressing over your wound, and strap it in place with DT. Blister care: Cover the blistered area with a bit of cotton gauze, and tape over the cotton. Make sure that the duct tape fully covers the cotton and doesn’t touch the blister at all. How to Make Homemade Car Cleaner
If you tend to wash your own car more in the summer months, check out this Homemade Car Cleaner! Using a gallon sized jug, add a 1/4 cup baking soda and a 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid. Fill the jug the rest of the way (almost to the top) with water. When you are ready to wash the car, shake the jug well to mix the ingredients. Add about 1 cup of cleaner to each 2-gallon pail of water.
“Just a small accident”
Before you return from your overseas trip I just want to let you know about the small accident I had with the pick up truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not to bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me. I was coming home from Asda, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pick up fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car. I am really sorry but I know with your kind hearted personality you will forgive me. A Father's Eyes
Jonathan's mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up. Both of them shared a very special relationship. Jonathan loved to play football and his father made sure that he was always there to cheer his son at every match, even if Jonathan wasn't a part of the playing team. Jonathan being small sized, wasn't allowed to play in the main team. Nevertheless, he continued with his practice with full determination. Everyone thought that Jonathan would never be able to make it into the team, though somehow, his determination carried him through. The coach seeing his diligence and dedication decided to keep him on the roster. One day during practice, the coach met him with a telegram. Jonathan was shocked to read the message contained in it. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Will it be all right if I miss practice today?" The coach gently put his arm around his shoulder and said, "Take the rest of the week off, son, and don't even plan to come to the game on Saturday." On the day of the game, Jonathan's college team was losing badly to the rival team. The coach and the players had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them. Jonathan ran up to the coach and pleaded him to allow him to play this match. At first, the coach wouldn't allow him to play. However after a lot of persuasion, the coach gave in. No sooner Jonathan joined the team in the field, their scores started to improve before both the teams were on a tie. However, the real cheer came during the crucial closing seconds when he intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. His team members were ecstatic. The crowd came running towards him to celebrate the win. After the match, the coach went up to Jonathan, who was seated alone in the corner of the locker room and asked, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!"

The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: 'My friend is dead! What can I do?' The operator, in a calm, soothing voice, says: 'Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.' There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. Clear your land of excess debris and plug any and all openings around the base of your home. Cover any openings that may remain or be necessary with mesh netting or wire mesh to keep out both By: Ray Collet snakes and their prey, mice. I have heard some discussion recently about how "Gateway" Avenue Ingredients: Clove oil & Cinnamon oil got its' name. Here is some information gathered from an early edition Simply mix a 50:50 mixture of clove and cinnamon oils and spray of the Rockwood Times, which actually sold for FIVE CENTS...Here is them around the foundation of your home, dog houses, walkways, the Rockwood Times had to say... garages, doors or anywhere you want to keep snakes away from. Gateway Avenue will be the name of the new four lane highway, or street running through Rockwood. This name was selected after a contest was held to select a name for the street. The contest was open to all school children in the city and over 300 names were submitted by students. For over a month a tie existed in the contest when the four civic organizations in the city who were to decide the winner voted two each on Gateway and Cumberland. The clubs were asked to vote over and the Civitan Club changed their vote from Cumberland to Gateway. The Jaycees and Rotary Club had voted for Gateway and the P.T.A. and Civitan voted for Cumberland. Turner Ingram, Rockwood High freshman, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.T.Ingram Jr. was announced by the contest committee as the winner. He will receive $10, first place prize. Three other contestants who entered the name Cumberland, will split the $10 second prize. They are, Betsy Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Evans, Bobby Nash, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Nash and Jeanette Holt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Holt. Eleven other names were selected and received honorable Mention. They are, Broadway, Center Street, Lakeland Avenue, Progress Avenue, Central Parkway, Sportsman Highway, Pleasant Street, Fairmont and Fairway. Contest committee was Edward Foland, chairman; Mrs. E.t. Ingram Jr., and Zirkle Cooper. The prizes were furnished by the four organizations selecting the name and the Rockwood First National Bank. Sure glad to see the new fishing piers being installed at the Tom Fuller Park..We weren't so lucky when we were growing up. It was along ways to walk or ride our bicycles to the lake, so we had to rely on "Chicken Fishing." What ???? You never heard of "Chicken Fishing"? Well pull up a chair and let me enlighten you a little on this subject. Where we grew up, in Clymersville there was no water around to fish in, but almost every family had a bunch of chickens running all over the yard a scratching and eating. So after a while an idea came to us boys. We would bait up a hook with a few pieces of corn or a big fat worm and cast it amongst a bunch of the chickens. And after a few casts, they would gobble it right up and you could reel it right on in. Now a 2 1/2 or a three pound Dominecker hen or rooster would put up a better fight than a 6 or 7 pound bass especially when it got it's wings a flapping. After a while we would have the chicken mounted just like a trophy fish and display it on our wall. Sometimes we would just mount the feet the way some people mount deer hoofs. Either way it was a fun time to pass away those hot , dry, dusty afternoons while growing up in a small town. Here are a few more things I remember about growing up in Rockwood. Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo." Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do Over," Race Issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly". Catching lightning bugs could happily occupy an entire evening. It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends. Being old referred to anyone over 20. Having a weapon in school meant Check with us for all your getting caught with a slingshot. Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true. Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute ads for action figures. The worst embarrassment was being picked last for Hardware and Plumbing needs! a team. Baseball card in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. That will do it for another trip down Memory Lane. Don't forget our big RHS Reunion..This will be held June 2nd through June 8th at the First Baptist Church Lake Property. Yes the same place as always. Interesting Uses for Wooden Clothespins
1. Food tags Hosting a party? Use those wooden clothespins to label your food. Just take a tag and clip it to that bowl of egg salad or chicken casserole. 2. Fun family project For a fun family project, have each of the kids decorate their own wooden clothespin. Get creative with colors and even glitter, too. Then, find creative ways to use them like labeling towels, washcloths or other personal items like “Sarah’s earphones”, homework and more. 3. Make magnets All those precious mementos kids bring home from school should be proudly displayed! Take a magnet and hot glue it to the back of a wooden clothespin. Use it to hang that A+ report card on the fridge. 4. Crafting Photos are hard to keep organized, so use some wooden clothespins to help with your labeling. Write down dates or names on the pin and label stacks of pictures for scrapbooking and organizational ease. 5. Control cords and cables Tidy up those cords and cables behind your desk and use some wooden clothespins to help keep them in order. 6. Make a bookmark Next time you need to mark a page in that favorite book, use a wooden clothespin as a bookmark. Personalize it with stickers or even a bit of spray paint to make it your own. 7. Thousands of women worked to support the war effort as riveters, welders, electricians, inspectors in plants, sewing clothing and parachutes for the military, ordnance workers, rolling bandages, clerical, and many other jobs such as volunteer workers collecting scrap metals and other critical materials. Wolves howl to send messages to pack members who might be far away. They also emit the loud, low-pitched sound to enforce rank. It makes sense out in the wild, but why do domesticated canines do it? It could just be a behavior passed on from their ancestral cousins, but behaviorists also think that howling is instinctively necessary and rewarding for dogs.
Stares at You
Are your canines eyes always trained on you? Chances are, he’s hoping you’ll give him a treat or shower him with praise and affection. After all, it’s hard to resist those pleading, puppy-dog eyes. It’s important to keep in mind that some dogs consider direct eye contact threatening. So before you gaze back at him, make sure he isn’t showing any signs of aggression or fear.
Walks in Circles Before Lying Down
No matter how many times they walk in a circle before lying down, it won’t change their resting spot’s comfort. Blame your dog’s ancestors for this ritual. It’s believed that when wolf-like dogs lived in the wild, they would walk around a spot to pat down the leaves or grass to create a nice nesting spot.
Thrashes His Toys
He sure looks like she’s having fun when she vigorously shakes her stuffed squeaky duck. But the truth is, she’s manifesting one her most primal instincts: killing. We’re being a little dramatic, but out in the wild, thrashing is how he would kill her prey. At home, he’s just exhibiting innocent play behavior.
