China clinch gold medal at Women’s U23 Tijuana, Mexico, October 12, 2013 – China defeated Dominican Republic in consecutive sets (25‐ 21, 25‐20, 26‐24) to clinch the gold medal of the inaugural FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship Open on Saturday night at Baja California High Performance Center. Liu Yanhan and Zhang Xiaoya each recorded 17 points to lead the Chinese team, followed by Yang Zou with 9 points and Gu Xinwei and Wang Qi with 8 apiece. Brayelin Martinez and Jeoselyna Rodriguez finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Dominican side. Candida Arias and Yonkaira Peña each contributed 7 tallies. China held an overwhelming advantage of 11‐4 in the blocking category with Yang and Zhang leading the charts with 4 and 3, respectively. In the match for the bronze medal, Japan scored a convincing 3‐1 (25‐16, 20‐25, 25‐11, 25‐19) victory over United States. For the last two sets of the contest, it was a marvelous exhibition from the Japanese side with a combination of defence and exciting fast offence. Yurie Nabeya and Saori Takahashi were the main offensive weapons for Japan as they finished with 16 points apiece while Sarina Koga added 13 around the excellent performance from setter Kanami Tashiro. Gina Mancuso topped USA with 13 points and Ariel Turner and Erica Wilson each contributed 11 points. Japan held the advantage in aces (7‐4) and the Americans led in blocks (9‐7). Turkey 3, Italy 0 Turkey ran away with the fifth position with a cruising victory over Italy in straight sets (25‐17, 25‐ 20, 25‐22). The Turkish side held a 12‐6 margin in blocks and blanked the opposition 5‐0 in aces. Gozde Yilmaz was the top scorers for the winners with 15 points, followed by Seyma Ercan and Ezgi Guc with 13 and 11, respectively. For the Italian team, Laura Partenio and Anna Nicoletti each finished with 11 points. Brazil 3, Germany 1 Brazil defeated Germany (25‐20, 25‐17, 20‐25, 25‐15) in the match for seventh position. Brazilian Ellen Braga was the top scorer of the match with 18 points, including five blocks and one ace. Glauciele Silva added 13 while Gabriella Souza and Francynne Jacintho each contributed 10 points to the winning effort. Germany’s Rebecca Scharpeklaus and Jennifer Geerties had 15 points apiece. Brazil registered 15 blocks to 12 by Germany.
