Japan 3, Mexico 1 Japan scored a 3‐1 (25‐19, 25‐13, 20‐25, 25‐15) victory over Mexico to cap the first day of action in Pool A. The Japanese played excellent defence throughout the match and committed 16 unforced errors to 24 by the defeated side. Both teams finished with 6 aces and Mexico held a 10‐7 advantage in the blocking department. Saori Takahashi and Yurie Nabeya each finished with 16 points to top the winning side while Suzuka Hashimoto and Haruyo Shimamura chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Mexico’s Andrea Rangel had a match‐high 21 points followed by Alejandra Isiordia who concluded with 14 tallies. Pool B United States 3, Kenya 0 The United States began their participation with a three sets victory over Kenya (25‐11, 25‐11, 25‐6). Monique Mead was the top scorer for the American team with 12 pts, while captain Gina Mancuso scored 11. Triza Atuka and captain Gaudencia Makokha finished with 3 apiece for Kenya. USA set a difference with a solid serving game, with a total of 11 team aces and also with 7 team blocks. Outside Hitter Hayley Hodson had five aces and Erica Wilson added two in a match that lasted 52 minutes and opened actions at Mexicali State Auditorium on Saturday. China 3, Germany 1 China defeated Germany 3‐1 (25‐21, 25‐22, 18‐25, 25‐19) in the second match of Pool B. China’s middle blocker Zhou Yang finished as top scorer with 20 points (4 blocks), followed by Xiaoya Zhang with 15 (2 aces) and Yanhan Liu with 12. Germany had four double digit players: Jennifer Geerties (15 points), Leonie Schwertmann (12), Katharina Schwabe (11) and Carina Aulenbrock (10). Both teams registered 12 aces and Germany held a 7‐6 advantage in blocks. However China made fewer unforced errors 21‐29. Brazil 3, Cuba 1 Brazil and Cuba played the most awaited match on day one at Mexicali State Auditorium. The victory was for the Brazilians 3‐1 (28‐26, 25‐27, 25‐15, 25‐21). Captain Ellen Braga was the top scorer with 23 points (3 aces) and was followed by Francynne Jacintho (15 points, 8 block kills), Glauciele Silva (14) and Gabriella Souza (13). For Cuba, Jennifer Alvarez scored 16 points and Rossana Giel closed with 14. Alena Rojas scored 12 and Captain Daymara Lescay finished with 11. Service was tied for both squads (5 for Brazil, 5 for Cuba). Brazil had 17 block points and Cuba 9.
