Thrilling victory of Turkey over Italy in Day One of Women’s U23 Tijuana, Mexico, October 5, 2013 – It was the first match of the opening day and also the longest and most exciting of the six‐match agenda as Turkey edged Italy in five sets of dramatic fashion. The Turkish team erased a 0‐2 deficit to claim a thrilling victory in the battle between European rivals. The match lasted 2 hours and 12 minutes and teams totaled 230 points with Turkey winning 29‐31, 16‐25, 26‐24, 25‐22, 17‐15. In the other matches of Pool A, the Dominican Republic cruised past Argentina in straight sets (25‐14, 25‐18, 25‐16) while Japan needed four sets to down Mexico 25‐19, 25‐13, 20‐ 25, 25‐15. In Pool B, United States crushed Kenya 25‐11, 25‐11, 25‐6 in the first match in Mexicali while China and Brazil both scored 3‐1 wins over Germany and Cuba, respectively. China collected a 25‐21, 25‐22, 18‐25, 25‐19 triumph and Brazil battled hard for two sets before gunning down Cuba 28‐26, 25‐27, 25‐15, 25‐21. Pool A Turkey 3, Italy 2 Turkey scored a dramatic come from behind five set victory over Italy (29‐31, 16‐25, 26‐ 24, 25‐22, 17‐15) in the first match of Pool A. Ceren Kestirengoz and Ezgi Guc finished with 23 and 19 points, respectively, to lead the scoring charts fo the winning side while Gozde Yilmaz and Asli Kalac added 16 and 12. Valentine Diouf had a match‐high 28 points for Italy while Alessia Gennari and Laura Partenio each totaled 16 points. Cristina Chirichella and Raphaela Folie tallied 12 and 10, respectively. Both teams scored with 10 aces but Turkey held a 14‐8 advantage in blocks with Kalac and Guc registering three apiece. Dominican Republic 3, Argentina 0 The Dominican Republic stormed past Argentina to capture a straight set victory (25‐14, 25‐18, 25‐16) in a match of Pool A. The winners held a big margin of 8‐3 in the aces category and also were better in the blocking department with a 7‐5 advantage. Jeoselyna Rodriguez and Yonkaira Peña topped the offensive charts of the winners with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Brayelin Martinez contributed 10 tallies. Rodriguez registered four of the eight aces recorded by the Dominican side. Maria Calvete and Virginia Granado were the main offensive players of the losing team with 9 and 7 points, respectively.
