Meet Hannah Garratt An Interview By Jennica Wlodarczyk

1. Hello, Hannah! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview. To start off, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself? Hobbies, cool things about your personality, or a brief summary of your future goals would be a great example of what to put here. Hi, I'm Hannah, and I'm 17. I was born in China, then adopted into a Canadian family, but still managed to live at least 12 years of my life in China. I love reading, but unfortunately, I haven't read much recently. I'm also known as a 'walking radio' because I love to sing and I do it ALL the time. Whether I'm good or not, I'll let you decide. For the last six years I've lived in China and have had a very multicultural community which is now why my 'accent' is not exactly pure 'Canadian.' But I

still say eh! I'm horrid at doing accents, but when I talk normally an accent will come out, but I don't know what accent it is. I would love to be able to become a teacher in either middle or high school. Basically anything that involves youth and helping them excites me; I have a real passion for them since, in my view, they are the game-changers of this world and personally they need as much help as they can get. I didn't have many Western peers at all growing up, but I did have older friends and mentors and I think that has really been a major factor in who I am today. 2. What are some of the things in your life that make you smile? I legit just bought a plaque the other month that said, "I smile because I don't know what the heck is going on." Sorry, couldn't help myself. I would say ‘tis the little things. I love thanking Daddy for His amazing creation – I especially love clouds. I really get all hyper about movies, especially during the movie, so I smile/laugh over that (and sometimes it's not at the best time either). I have an amazing boyfriend who makes me smile everyday because of his goofiness (you know who you are). The last thing is that I smile when I see others smile or laugh or just having a good time. It brings me joy when I see others joyful.

3. Dancing is one of your hobbies. What style of music do you enjoy dancing to? For the most part hiphop or something with a good beat. I mainly danced hip-hop or free style but I can be very diverse. I also like dancing to calmer music, but it really depends on my mood. 4. What was your favourite thing about schooling and graduating with HCOS? See, I didn't have a 'social life' ‘til I was in grade 12. But I'm ok with that since they made up for all those years of not having one (lurve ya'll). I loved being able to do school in my pj's! I'm the fourth and final child of the house so my mum knew what she was doing schedule and motivation-wise with me, so yes, I did wake up at 7:30 to start school. Living in China it definitely made my life SO much easier than my mum homeschooling me (as teacher and student we didn't get along the best), and I wasn't about to go into the Chinese public schooling, and for the most part International school was out of the budget and city. I would say the last thing that was great about HCOS, other than the teachers, is the simplicity in filling out university forms!! Because I wasn't 'homeschooled' I didn't have to do the other channel and write about all the curriculum I did and if it matched up to what the admission was, HCOS is fully quali-

2

fied with its courses and such that you can just state you went there and they view it as any other public school or such. 5. Tell us three random facts about yourself. Three random facts? I hit people when I'm excited (sorry for all those who watch movies with me). I've gotten a scar or at least bruise from every place I've worked. I probably have THE weirdest accent when speaking Mandarin.

6. What is your favourite subject in school? Woman! You can't do that to me! Ok. It's between Humanities, Comp Civ (go on the trip ya'll!), and Psychology 30 ( Alberta grading system). The first two ‘cause the teacher was amazing, and the course was pretty cool too. The third because it's interesting to learn about how humans think and behave. 7. If you could offer just one piece of advice to our readers, what would it be? Really? Just one piece of advice? How about lots combined into one? What I've learned the hard way unfortunately is that you must keep praising God even through the hard times. You may not feel like it, you may hate Him, but I've personally felt the pain and hatred that you can feel if you stop praising Him and you let that pain seep into your soul and life. Even when our world has been

The HCOS Weekly

torn apart, you must be willing to forgive and praise God (or forgive whoever) because in the end we see that if you don't you're ultimately slowly killing yourself with all your anger and bitterness. God doesn't want us to live our life like that; He wants us to be free of burdens. And please don't go into the whole 'I'm not worthy enough thing' because I don't have enough room on here to contradict you. As I heard the other month from a lady who suffered from an abusive family and had schizophrenia, and through all of her life, she was able to say at the end of the day 'I've won. I'm alive.' And in my eyes that gave me hope and I think if you lose hope in life, you've lost sight of the greater things.

black? I don't know. White and black I guess? Black is such a happy colour.

Attack on Titan An Anime Review By Jesse Ongkili Over the past few years, anime has been taking the western world by storm. It has long since been a part of Japanese television, yet thanks to the internet, we now have a wide selection of TV shows (and movies) featuring a unique Asian style of art better known as manga (on paper), or anime (as seen in animations).

8. What is one way that you have been able to be a good influence to others? A good influence... I have no idea. I hope they just are able to see JC through me. Though I shall point out, remember to keep the joy in life. We can mature and grow up and because responsible trusted adults but if you've lost the joy and fun in life then... Well... It's just hollow. I'd like to be able to show and be an example of that. Others were to me, and I want to be that for others. 9. What is your favourite type of candy? I don't eat candy! I eat chocolate, as you can tell from the chubbiness. I used to be into nerds a lot, though now I'm into a geek (if you don't get the joke just laugh anyway). I also loved Tic Tacs – do they count? Oh! I love Starburst! And red and purple Skittles. I'm my father's daughter. 10. Finally, what is your favourite colour of tiger? I thought tigers basically came in orange and black, white and white, or white and

One such show that has recently rocketed up the global charts in popular anime has been the hit series “Attack on Titan” (or, Shingeki no Kyojin, as pronounced in the original kanji). The series takes place in an olden day, post-apocalyptic medieval world where a young boy (Eren Yeager) seeks to save humanity by ridding the world of an evil race of giants

The HCOS Weekly

known as ‘titans’, whose sole purpose is to bring humanity to extinction. Throughout the series, Eren is aided by both friends and family to help preserve life on Earth. When the heavily fortified city in which the humans reside gets breached by the titan forces, Eren and his friends embark on an adventure to find a traitor in their midst; someone who’s giving valuable information over to the enemy side. Although the storyline is enticing and the presentation of the series is undoubtedly thrilling to say the least, it is important to note the darker aspects this series has to hold. The show features high amounts of gore starting from episode one, and continues throughout the series. To say they show blood would be an understatement, as one of their jobs (as defenders of humanity) is to slay as many titans as possible without dying in the process. The casualties are high within the series, and you best not get too attached to your favorite characters, as you never know when the next one’s going to kick the bucket. I personally would rate this series at 14A for mature – what it lacks in sexual and other suggestive content, it more than makes up for in other areas. A degree of profanity can also be found throughout the series.

As dancers, we all have something that inspires us to push further and go that extra mile. As a child, I had a book called “Degas and the Little Dancer”. I read that book all the time. Ballet

Many people misunderstand ballet. They believe that it’s full of pink tutus and pointe shoes, that it’s easy and that anyone can do it. But in reality, ballet means staying up late to practice that one move, or waking up in the morning barely able to breathe from the aching in your muscles. But sometimes that’s what gets me up, knowing that I have worked hard and can feel that I am getting stronger and better, that I am improving.

Attack on Titan has an excellent storyline with relatable aspects, along with strong character development and numerous morals spread throughout the series. Unfortunately, at times the plot may seem overshadowed by the overexposure of the many violent scenes. This series is certainly not Some people ask why we do ballet. for the squeamish or faint of heart. Deanna's Traveling Experience A Documented Journey By Deanna Burmatoff

Me and my baby snowman! Hey guys! So, I went on a family trip a couple weeks ago, and was asked by our wonderful editor to write up a little article on it (well actually, I suggested the idea to her… but whatever, haha). So I will try to keep it as a “little” article, though that might be a bit hard since it was a two-week long trip, and I might ramble a bit. xD But here goes! On Wednesday November 5th, at 8:30 am, my family and I packed ourselves into our truck, along with all our luggage, and drove to the Kamloops Airport. It was a long, two-hour drive, and I was happy when we finally arrived at the airport. Because that was when our trip officially started! For me, at least. Ater taking three planes and waiting in the airport for who knows how long, on Thursday, November 6th we finally arrived at our desti-

four other people who are distantly related to us, I believe… as well as my parents, two sisters, brother, and I. But you know what they say: the more the merrier! Hahaha, it was great. The drive wasn't that memorable, except for the moments when we all burst out laughing for a reason that I can't seem to remember right now. We were all happy to get out and stretch our legs by the time we made it to Niagara. I was greeted by an amazing, tall building when I got out of the car: the Skylon Tower. It looked like a mini CN Tower. Walking down some stairs and along the sidewalks beside the Skylon, we started to get our first glimpse of the falls. It was a chilly

CN Tower, framed We didn't stop to see the CN Tower, but we could see it in the distance from the Casa Loma tower. We kind of drove past it when driving to Chinatown, and when we let Toronto. I got a few pics of it, I think. But we were driving so they’re a bit blurry. Ooh, I also got to experience the first snow here in Ontario!!! I was so excited to see the first flakes float gently to the ground and then smash against the hard pavement and break into tiny frozen fragments. :D On Saturday, November 15th, my family and I packed ourselves into our rental minivan and headed towards the town/city of Woodstock, where we met up with the rest of our gang. Then, ater a rushed breakfast at some fast food joint, we piled all 17 of us into 3 cars and drove about 2 hours to Niagara Falls. We were a huge group! “We” included two of my aunts, one of my uncles, four of my cousins, and

The Skylon Tower day, just cold enough to actually freeze the mist from the falls in the air and turn nearby trees and fields white with frost. It was so cool! The actual waterfall was even more spectacular; the thundering of the water, the fine mist that floated like, hundreds of meters high into the air above the falls. It was amazing! I'm sure I took close to a hundred photos. I've seen Niagara Falls before, in pictures and on TV and stuff, but it was so much better in person. It almost looked familiar, but at the same time there

was a… a new recognition. I don't know how to explain it. Kind of like meeting someone in person whom you had only seen pictures of before. It was awesome, I know that. Ater taking dozens of pictures of

Two waterfalls, a rainbow, and its faint double. the waterfalls, of family posing, and of stray seagulls flying around (I was actually amazed to see how many birds were flying above the water by the falls. Maybe close to a hundred), the group decided to split in two. My dad, my cousin, a relative, my sister, and I went on a Journey Behind the Falls, while the rest of the group went to the casino. The five of us were given yellow ponchos to keep us "dry". They sort of helped.... But our sleeves were soaked by the time we joined the others. I had accidentally ripped the drawstrings that secured my poncho's hood, so my head got wet. Thankfully, I was wearing a toque, so I remained dry enough. We were so close to the waterfall; the mist was constantly raining down on us. The roar of the falls wasn't that loud, surprisingly. I think I have heard louder ones. Or maybe my hearing was affected by the toque and hood... :P There were tunnels that went behind the falls, with sections that opened up to the outside so we could actually see the water tumbling down in front of us. It was awesome. Ater re-emerging from the tunnels,

our next task was to locate the rest of our group and meet up somewhere. That proved to be more difficult than it sounded... I can't believe how many times the meeting place was moved, and sometimes without our knowing! It's a good thing we all had cell phones. I don't know how else we could have done it. Thank goodness for technology. But the whole being-separated had its benefits ater all; the five of us were able to tour this amusement park while waiting for the rest of them. It was called Cliton Hill, I believe. It wasn't as big as many other amusement parks, but I was still surprised to see it. I had no idea it was there! Right by Niagara Falls.

Makes my feet hurt just remembering it all. Our remaining days in London were spent with family, mostly just visiting and having dinner and stuff like that. It was good bonding time. We all eventually met up, and went for dinner. Ater dinner we made our way back down to the Falls, to get ready for the fireworks show! It was pretty sweet. I laughed and pointed it out to my sister, then as I turned back to it, its eyes and mouth opened and moved its head. I freaked out. Like, seriously. I just about ran away... Then this snake came down from the ceiling and started talking. I just turned and walked away as fast as I could, eyes wide. It was really great. Good quality time. I'm really gonna miss them all, and I'm sure they'll miss us as well. Saying goodbye is always the hardest... But I am very thankful for this opportunity to come out here and visit everyone. We made some pretty awesome memories together, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Maybe one day we will see each other again, whether we go visit them out there again or they come here. I think it's time for them to come see our place here in BC, God willing. :)

The Verse of the Week An Article By Jennica Wlodarczyk

Matthew 1:18-25 "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But ater he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus."

you guys about the Christmas passage above. Perspectives in writing (and life in general) are a big deal for me, so today, I'd like to relate to you all a dierent perspective. Most of the time, those of us who read the Christmas story are in absolute awe of the perfect design in which the events of the story played out. When it comes to God being number one in this story, there is no doubt about it. Think of the prophecies about Jesus' birth in the books of the Old Testament. It's absolutely amazing to know that our God cares so much about the little details, the small ins and outs that people sometimes cast to the side. While I could ramble on about this beautiful perfection of God for pages and pages, let's go back to that perspective I was talking about.

As stated in the paragraph above, most people look at the Christmas story and go, "Wow, our God is so amazing!" Believe me when I say that I am not trying to take away from that truth - I'm just trying to oer you a dierent perspective to fill in parts of the whole picture. While we do know that the birth of Jesus and beginning of His promises was so important, it is also essential to realize that this story happened in the way it did because of the people God used. Take a moment and think about that. Jesus - the Prince of Peace, the King of all Kings - was born to a normal human girl who would have been around the Grade 9 or 10 mark by nowaday's standards. Mary obeyed God and opted to trust in Him at some pretty high stakes. Not only did Joseph have the legal right to kill her since she was pregnant out of wedlock, but I know that the verse is usually her parents and other family would supposed to be just that - a verse - have shunned her harshly. Ater all, but this week, I wanted to talk to she had broken one of their reli-

gion's sacred laws. But because she did what God asked and trusted Him about the loose ends, everything worked out in the end. She gave birth to Jesus, she went on to have a marriage with Joseph, and she was able to witness what Jesus did on our planet. Wow. That's all pretty incredible, isn't it? Someone our age - a girl our age - was able to play one of the most important roles in the entirety of human history. To be honest, I had planned to ramble about Joseph when I started this article. There are some pretty cool points in how he had to trust God, too. I mean, I'm no guy, but I think I'd be pretty creeped out if my fiancee came up to me with the news that she was carrying God's baby. Think of the immense trust and utterly blind belief that he had to walk through. Even so, since we're all school kids, it's sometimes easier for us to relate to someone in history who was just a regular kid like us. In short, what I'm trying to get across to you is that the Christmas story is amazing. If you haven't read it before, look up Luke 2:1-20. When you read it this Christmas season, remember that God can use anyone. There isn't a special group of people God uses to get His point across. All throughout the Bible, He used misfits, kids, and ex-murderers to spread His word across the nations of old. There is nothing you can say or do or believe to make God love you less or speak to and through you less. Remember to have fun this Christmas, and to give Him the glory in all that you do. Merry Christmas, guys, and we'll see you in the New
