The 2007-08 ACADEMIC YEAR
saw many of Rhode Island’s teams continue to build on their previous season’s successes. Fresh off an Atlantic 10 Championship and a top-25 final ranking, the men’s soccer team was nationally ranked again in 2007 and advanced to the A-10 semifinals, while the football team brought home the Governor’s Cup for the secondconsecutive season. The URI women’s tennis program also experienced a successful fall season as it posted a perfect 6-0 mark and won its second-consecutive New England Championship. The men’s basketball team was nationally-ranked for the first time since 1998 and earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) while the men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams finished second and third, respectively, at both the Atlantic 10 and New England Championships. The spring brought a pair of A-10 titles to Kingston as rowing captured its first-ever conference crown while the men’s track & field team won the league title – for the seventh time in the last eight seasons – and also brought home its second-straight New England Championship. The URI baseball team collected more wins than any other Division I team in New England and qualified for its sixth-consecutive Atlantic 10 tournament – the longest active streak among any current A-10 team. There, the Rams advanced through the winner’s bracket before falling to eventual champion Charlotte and No. 1 Xavier to finish third overall. The URI golf team also had a strong showing at the A-10 Championship, finishing third among the 12-team field.
