Placed using the rule of thirds, the front-most fan provides a focal point in this crowd of cheering fans. The wide-angle lens created interesting distortion in the photo, but the real story is in the excitement the viewer can feel just by looking at this image.

Quiet solitude; a lone reader sits on the rocks next to the ocean. The viewer’s eye is guided around the photo starting with the subject’s downward gaze. From there our eye travels over the mossy rocks and up and around with the foam-topped choppy waves.

With a look of determination on his face, a football player’s nose gets taped by his coach. Because the photographer got close, the viewer can see both the odd angle of the player’s nose and that his focus is on the game rather than on himself.

Volleyball is a sport defined by teamwork. This photo, with its huddle of girls, raised arms and finger pointing toward the sky, illustrates the unity felt by this team.
