To make the best rods in the business, St. Croix must partner with the best suppliers. We’re especially proud of our network of graphite material partners, all of whom contribute to the exceptional performance, quality and value that define a St. Croix rod. For 2012, the 3M Company, a long-time St. Croix supply partner, will be supplying their exciting 3M™ Matrix Resin to fuse the graphite in our highest performance SCVI, SCV, SCIV and select SCII graphite rods. 3M’s remarkable composite resin uses nano-technology to significantly improve the strength and durability of graphite rods, and when used in conjunction with our other advanced materials and proprietary design and manufacturing technologies, furthers our ability to build the best rods on earth.

A BRIEF BACKGROUND ON GRAPHITE:

3M MATRIX RESIN

The fishing tackle industry uses the words graphite and carbon interchangeably. Technically speaking, the correct term is “carbon.”

THE TECHNOLOGY THAT MAKES OUR RODS SO STRONG IS INVISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE. AT LEAST UNTIL YOU SET THE HOOK.

A lot has changed since the introduction of the first graphite fishing rods back in the mid-1970s. Designed largely by trial and error, early graphite rods were inspired by the imagination, experience and talent of the rod designers – and the availability of a steady stream of new and improved graphite fibers.

The 3M Company, the global leader in adhesive technology, recently introduced a new breakthrough resin that uses nano-sized (ultra-microscopic) spheres of silica as a homogeneous, non-abrasive filler between the carbon fibers of a graphite rod blank, which results in a much stronger, more sensitive

Graphite fiber, a by-product of the space race, evolved quickly as aerospace applications for this exciting new material expanded. Each generation of “new” graphite was stronger and stiffer (i.e.,“higher modulus”) than previous generations as the “space race” ratcheted graphite development into high gear. Rod makers took notice, and soon the space race created a “modulus race” in the fishing rod industry. As each new high-modulus graphite fiber was developed for aerospace, rod designers used it to create lighter, faster, more responsive fishing rods. In the past decade, everything changed. Graphite fibers are now available in a huge selection of modulus and strength, and new high-modulus / high-strain fibers deliver both increased stiffness and superior strength. St. Croix currently uses nine different graphite materials formulated to our exact specifications to design and build over 30 different series of rods – one of the largest in the industry. Rod design has also evolved from the draftsman’s table to the computer, and we now use sophisticated mathematical algorithms to design precise tapers for each graphite material to achieve the exact performance characteristics we want in our rods.

finished product. We’ve named our formulation of this new resin NSi (Nano Silica), and we use it to build our highest performance graphite rods. Carbon fiber composite shows uniform distribution of nano silica particles.

The “nano-silica” particles in 3M’s Matrix Resin are uniformly distributed and densely packed in the resin that binds the individual graphite fibers, which reinforces them during compression when the rod is flexed. This significantly

increases the fibers’ compression strength by resisting micro-buckling – for improved hoop and flex strength of the blank. The result is a 30% (or more) stronger blank without any change in the weight, action or power of the finished rod. The nano-silica filler also improves the resin’s adhesive bond between the carbon fibers, which increases the internal shear strength of the rod blank while further improving the flex strength. Almost twice as hard as conventional resins when fully cured, our tests reveal that rods manufactured with 3M’s new Matrix Resin show both an increase in modulus for improved sensitivity, and a significant increase in fracture resistance and overall blank toughness. The end results are astonishing. Rods built with 3M™ Matrix Resin are stronger, more durable and tougher – with significantly improved hoop/flex strength and resistance to fracture. All without an increase in weight or a change in the rod’s action or power.

RODS OFFERED IN 2012 WITH THE NEW 3M MATRIX RESIN ™

In 2012, the following St. Croix rod series will be built with 3M™ Matrix Resin: .............................................................................................

“The 3M Matrix Resin has opened the door for us to become more creative in our rod blank designs. The strength improvement we’ve seen in our laboratory is incredible, with a 30% average increase in strength on existing products. The 3M Matrix Resin also allows us to push the limits of design in several of our rod series. We are able to create substantially lighter, more sensitive rods without compromising performance.” ™

– Jason Brunner, St. Croix’s Director of Engineering. .........................................................................................................................................................................................................

S T. C R O I X T E C H N O L O G I E S : A superior resin does not automatically result in a superior fishing rod. But when combined with St. Croix’s state-of-the-art computer-assisted rod design capabilities, our own proprietary design and manufacturing technologies, and over 60 years of rod-making experience, the new 3M™ Matrix Resin makes a great rod even better. ADVANCED REINFORCING TECHNOLOGY (ART ) ™

St. Croix’s Advanced Reinforcing Technology (ART) uses horizontally wrapped, high-strength carbon fibers on the inside of the hollow blanks to strengthen critical areas of our highest performance rods – without adding bulk or extra weight. (See page 6) INTEGRATED POLY CURVE ® (IPC ®) TECHNOLOGY St. Croix’s proprietary Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) Technology was another breakthrough in blank design because it allows us to design rod tapers in continuous flowing curves instead of “step tapers” used previously. This results in smoother casting with no weak taper transition points. The continuous-curve tapers also transmit vibrations more efficiently for noticeably enhanced sensitivity. (See page 6)

WHAT IS MODULUS? Modulus is the physical measure of a material’s stiffness, equal to the ratio of applied load (stress) to the resulting deformation of a material (strain). A fiber with higher modulus is harder to bend – and will snap back faster – than a lower modulus fiber of the same weight. That means a rod made of high-modulus graphite requires fewer fibers to achieve the same stiffness as a rod made with lower modulus graphite – so the higher modulus rod weighs less and telegraphs vibrations with more sensitivity. But higher modulus fibers also tend to be more brittle than lower modulus fibers, so rod designers must find just the right balance between stiffness and strength when working with high-modulus graphite fibers. ...................................................................................

K E Y D E S I G N FA C T O R S Other factors that impact the strength, weight, sensitivity and action of a rod include the type and amount of resin used to bind the fibers together, the amount of prepreg material used, the type of scrim used to create the sheet of graphite fibers that will form the blank, the pattern used to cut the sheet to its final dimensions, and the shape of the mandrel used to roll the graphite sheet into a finished blank. Rod action and weight are also impacted by the type and placement of guides.

When you set out to uncover what makes a St. Croix different from other rods, you need look no further than the engineer sitting right beside the rod designer. It’s a partnership that’s produced such breakthroughs as St. Croix’s exclusive Integrated Poly Curve® and Advanced Reinforcing Technology.™ Rod performance is only as good as the design behind it – so before we even think about sending a rod through for production, we spend as much time as necessary in the design department to ensure that every St. Croix rod is engineered and developed to outperform all others.

SO MUCH GOES INTO A ST. CROIX ROD SO YOU CAN PULL

SO MUCH OUT WITH ONE.

Examine a St. Croix rod closely and you’ll find a wealth of innovations and craftsmanship. But, in light of the fact you’d rather be fishing than sitting over a microscope, allow us to explain what makes a St. Croix rod so special. The journey begins in Park Falls, Wisconsin and eventually leads to Fresnillo, Mexico. It is in Park Falls that a rare combination of blazing technology and genuine handcraftsmanship come together to make incomparable fishing tools. A tradition that continues for a select series of rods in Fresnillo.

THE SILICON VALLEY OF FISHING – IMAGINE. Anglers often think of Park Falls as a high-tech mecca. After all, there is nowhere else incorporating St. Croix’s proprietary ART™ and IPC® technologies. Likewise it’s here, and only

here, that rod designers stand side-by-side with engineers bringing their ideas to fruition so smoothly. It’s here you’ll also find the software St. Croix developed so blanks are built to the

highest standards in the industry – a tactic that is the foundation leading to superior performance and durability. Laser micrometer and laser alignment machinery ensures every guide and handle is put on perfectly straight. There are rod-building tools here that other rod builders can only dream about. Of course, you can plug in a bunch of machines anywhere there’s electricity. What’s at the heart of a St. Croix rod is the time-honored blend of technology and handcraftsmanship. In Park Falls, over thirty pairs of hands contribute to three-dozen different steps before a St. Croix rod is deemed ready to charge into the world looking for action. Thirty pairs of hands attending to every last-minute detail. Thirty pairs of hands making sure a rod doesn’t leave Park Falls until it’s ready to take on any fish in the world.

............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

ST. CROIX VALUE. KEEPING IT ALIVE IN NORTH AMERICA. Of course, there are only so many hands in Park Falls, Wisconsin and over the years, the undeniable value of St. Croix rods has meant more and more people have wanted to fish one. Which means every year, more and more rods leave Park Falls for waters throughout the world.

Well, it’s gotten to the point where we simply can’t make enough in our Park Falls factory. It’s a small town. (And we’d like to keep it that way.) Faced with a decision of opening another factory or outsourcing to Asia, we concluded the only way to ensure a St. Croix rod remains a St. Croix rod was to construct a second factory in Fresnillo, Mexico. If you happen to be traveling through Fresnillo, you’ll find an almost mirror facility to our state-of-the-art Park Falls operation – same equipment, same manufacturing procedures and the very same quality control protocols. Our Fresnillo facility manufactures a select group of rods that are designed and engineered here in Park Falls. These rods offer the chance for an even greater segment of the

fishing population to get their hands on a St. Croix. Rod models currently manufactured in Park Falls will continue to be made in Park Falls. By making sure all our rods are “Handcrafted in North America,” we are able to continue providing anglers with the best value in angling.

“ROD MODELS CURRENTLY MANUFACTURED IN PARK FALLS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MADE IN PARK FALLS. FRESNILLO ALLOWS US TO KEEP UP WITH GROWING DEMAND FOR ST. CROIX RODS.” – Paul Schluter, President, St. Croix Rod Winders attaching guides to rods.

PITY THOSE WHO ONLY GET TO USE THEIR OPPOSABLE THUMBS TO SEND

TEXT MESSAGES.

You on the other hand can tell the drag setting on your reel with one tap of your thumb. It’s a skill you’ve acquired over hundreds of thousands of casts in pursuit of big fish. So naturally, you demand that your rods be as finely attuned to conditions as your beloved digit. Fortunately, St. Croix’s Avid Series® casting rods don’t disappoint because of the high-modulus SC III graphite blank and our exclusive IPC® technology. These rods are super light, hypersensitive to strikes and are finished with premiumgrade components like Fuji® exposed-blank reel seats and lightweight Alconite® guides. Text that to your buddy – you know, the one still whining over the one that got away.

QUITTING TIME ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU’RE

QUITTING.

If you’re like us, five o’clock is prime fishing time AM or PM. That kind of dedication requires rods that are as close to a sure thing as it gets. Of course, we’re talking about our new Rage series: Perfectly balanced SCIII graphite rods with IPC® technology that combine premium Pac Bay Minima micro guides with a small stripper guide for casting precision that borders on the unfair. All that casting could take a toll on your hands, but the Rage features our incredible neoprene skin handle that serves up unmatched comfort – pushing back that quitting hour as much as possible. Equally sweet, the neoprene grip actually improves when it gets wet. Yes sir, the new Rage is more than ready when the hook setting goes round the clock.

26

ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS FISHING SPOTS, ARE FLOWER SHOPS ON THE WAY

HOME.

There’s no such thing as a casual musky fisherman. You’re either all in, or not in at all. That kind of zeal demands rods that can stand up to the rigors of casting heavy metal and setting hooks on prehistoric freshwater torpedoes. Sounds like a job description for St. Croix’s Mojo Musky rods. From the new, longer 8'6" models on down, these rods feature SC II graphite construction, fast actions and power ranges from medium-heavy to extra-heavy so they’re up to any challenge a musky throws your way. To keep your personal mojo on the rise, these rods are finished with premiumgrade components like Forecast® hard aluminum-oxide guides, flanged ring tops with zirconium inserts and genuine Fuji® reel seats. So now all you need to do is find a St. Croix® tackle retailer and a “modest bouquet” near you.

HE’S NOT SO MUCH A FISHING BUDDY AS HE IS

AN ALIBI.

For musky, bass and pike anglers an understanding spouse is a treasure. But sometimes you need a corroborating witness, the kind that will testify under oath that you were indeed stuck in traffic and not on the water during that much-anticipated Lamaze class. Whenever you do get around to fishing, you need rods that deliver the goods when the water starts to boil – enter the Premier® family of casting rods. Thirty-eight handcrafted models constructed with premium SCII graphite and top-grade components, these ever-popular rods provide the kind of lake cred you just can’t put a price on. As for your whereabouts last Tuesday night? We won’t tell a soul.

Some people fish for fish, some people fish for voracious prehistoric dinosaurs, more commonly known as Muskellunge. No matter what grabs your fancy – or your crankbait – the Avid Series® AC300A casting reel is perfect for throwing big lures to big fish.

ONLY 57% OF WORKING AMERICANS USE THEIR FULL ALLOTMENT OF VACATION DAYS. BET 100% OF THEM

DON’T FISH. The other 43% that “get it” know just what to do with down time: fish, fish, and oh yeah…fish some more. Of course that opens up all kinds of possibilities anywhere there’s a lake, river or promising stream. Here’s where a line of rods like the Triumph® pays off huge. Made with SC II graphite and available in a variety of actions, Triumph rods deliver more value per cast than any other rod going, especially for those of us who live to fish – and, at least for the time being, work to live.

REPEATING THE SAME BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT OUTCOMES ISN’T INSANITY, IT’S CALLED

FISHING.

At St. Croix we’re of the belief that if more people fished, fewer folks would be sitting on psychiatrists’ couches on a regular basis. But that’s just us. Of course, no amount of fishing will help you if you’re using anything less than a St. Croix® Avid Inshore rod. No need to hold back either, Integrated Poly Curve® tooling technology combined with high-modulus SCIII graphite blanks on all 22 models give you license to take your fishing up a few notches and then some. Other notable features include Alps™ zirconium guides with 316 stainless-steel frames for superior saltwater corrosion protection, and a handsome copper paint finish that will raise the envy factor exponentially even among the most ardent wackos.

TIDES DICTATE MY SCHEDULE, NOT

E.S.T.

Eastern standard time, central standard time...yada yada. Any charter skipper worth his fee knows that if you want to catch your limit, you’re schedule can only revolve around the rhythms of lunar cycles, and you should never be too far from your trusty Tidemaster® rods. Guides and veteran inshore anglers know precisely how to put the power and sensitivity of these fine fishing implements to good use. Handcrafted with our exclusive SCII graphite blanks, and outfitted with Batson Forecast® hard aluminum-oxide guides featuring 316 stainless-steel frames, Tidemaster rods come in a dizzying array of actions, sizes and power ranges perfect for any inshore application – regardless of what the moon might be doing.

MANNING A PUSH POLE VS. A SMARTPHONE. ADVANTAGE

PUSH POLE.

We’re not suggesting that social media isn’t all that they say it is, but it’s no substitute for chasing down some redfish or tarpon and sharing a cold one with an actual flesh-and-blood friend, now is it? And, quite frankly, nothing will improve your status online, or elsewhere, like procuring a Mojo Inshore rod or two. Built with St. Croix’s premium-quality SCII graphite and finished with Batson Forecast® hard aluminum-oxide guides with 316 stainless-steel frames, these rods are incredibly durable – performing as advertised in spinning or casting configurations. They’re a superb value to boot, so if that doesn’t get your mojo moving, we don’t know what will.

HERE’S TO THOSE WHO FIND ANGRY SURF MORE INVITING THAN A PLUSH

RECLINER.

Like a siren’s song, foamy caps call out to you and lure you to the coast; sometimes for weeks at a time. This is no place for “good-all-around” type rods. You need sticks with surf casting in their DNA. Rods like St. Croix’s Legend® Surf. These rods are supremely balanced and are imbued with our exclusive, butt-kicking ART™ and IPC® technologies. Even sweeter still, they’re equipped with small-diameter Fuji® LC surf guides so you can cast effortlessly into a nor’easter if need be, i.e., the bluefish are running.

THERE WILL BE OTHER PIANO RECITALS AND ANNIVERSARIES, BUT AN EPIC STRIPER RUN IS

NON-NEGOTIABLE. It’s fine to show off your new Mojo Surf rod to that special someone. Heck, you can even go into excruciating detail about how great they perform and how strong SCII graphite makes them. But when you get to the weight-saving surf guides, drop it there. Any mention of anything that would make it easier to stay out longer could take the conversation – as an obligated parent, partner or significant other – in a direction you don’t want to go, if you know what we mean.

“HONEY, I COULDN’T USE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, THERE WEREN’T ANY

Few things make a surf fisherman happier than releasing a few pounds of air pressure from his tires. Another one of those few things is casting some meat with a St. Croix® Premier® Surf rod. These rods combine SCII and SCIIW graphite to create a formidable fish-harvesting tool, which is good to know in the event you ever get “stranded” on the beach.

AFTER A LONG DAY OR TWO OFFSHORE, IT’S AMAZING HOW THE WORD “SHARK” CAN DEFUSE THE IRE OF A

SPOUSE.

Exaggeration and fishing go together like fish and chips. But in the moment of truth, you need to rely on fact, not fiction. Especially when you’re pursuing fish that can turn the tables on you in a New York minute. That’s why your rods need to possess game-changing technology: the kind of innovative features and materials found in Legend® Salt rods from St. Croix.® Designed using our very own IPC® tooling technology and strengthened internally with ART,™ each blank is thermofused with NSi (nano-silica) resin, formulated from a revolutionary new 3M™ Matrix Resin technology. The result is a rod you can count on, no matter what’s on the other end.

A STACK OF ST. CROIX CATALOGS HIDDEN UNDER YOUR BED? THAT’S NOTHING TO BE

ASHAMED OF.

We’re all human. We have desires. Needs. And if ogling over the latest selection of St. Croix beauties puts the curl in your cast, so to speak, well that’s just fine. Especially when the page turns to our Legend Elite® fly rods. A seductive combination of slim-profile ferrules and stunning cosmetics matched with premium, highmodulus, high-strain SC V graphite blanks loaded with ART™ and IPC® technology. Legend Elites also feature SC VI graphite in the lower portion of the rod for added power and reduced weight. All this, and NSi (Nano Silica) resin technology, as well. The result is enough space-age science and American handcraftsmanship to give you a four-piece rod that performs like a one-piece. Freshwater models are finished in a smooth Gallatin green, while the saltwater rods – featuring our max-power butt section for handling big fish and even bigger winds – are finished in a sweet Belize blue. CAN A FLY ROD CHANGE YOUR LIFE? DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH OF A LIFE YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF

FLY FISHING.

When it comes to understanding the latest sub-surface fishing techniques, few people know more than Kelly Galloup – which is why we asked him to help us develop the best-selling Bank Robber™ and the new-for-2012 High Stick Drifter. The Bank Robber is simply the ultimate streamer-fishing rod for chucking big weighted flies effortlessly but with the precision of a Tomahawk missile. The new High Stick Drifter is designed specifically for today’s advanced nymph fishing methods. They feature a special lightweight tip made possible by using high modulus/high strain SCV graphite with NSi resin (featuring the 3M’s nano Matrix Resin) and a carbonmatte scrim. This unique tip reduces angler fatigue when the rod is held high for long periods of time, while emphasizing sensitivity for better strike detection. And the balance? Incredible. Both series feature SCVI graphite in lower sections for added power with reduced weight and St. Croix’s proprietary ART™ and IPC® technology – making them the most technologically advanced fly rods in existence. Can these rods change your life? Yea. We think so.

66

K E L LY G A L L O U P

“These rods have more technology packed into them than any sticks in history. INSTEAD OF BEING PREOCCUPIED WITH FISHING, WHY NOT JUST GO AHEAD AND BECOME OFFICIALLY

“OCCUPIED?”

Sit there at your desk idly staring at the abyss with visions of pocketwater in your head and your stellar professional reputation may take a dive. Things could be significantly worse if you operate heavy machinery in a state of piscatorial distraction. At that point it’s probably best to just pack it up and hit the water with an Avid Series® fly rod. This impressive line of trout rods featuring IPC® technology with slim-profile ferrules and a beautiful canteen-green pearl finish is always ready for action. The moderate action loading progressively down the SCIII blank makes them ideal for protecting light tippets, and the extensive selection of models covers a wide array of trout fishing situations. No matter what else you’re supposed to be doing.

THERE ARE ONLY A COUPLE OCCASIONS YOU CAN’T SKIP TO GO FISHING –

DYING, FOR EXAMPLE. We gather today to pay our respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Those who freely skipped out on many of life’s cherished moments to make sure the wet flies were not dry. That the waders were free to wade. That every Imperial® fly rod met its full potential. Finished in an inspiring, gorgeous gloss burgundy, their dynamic blend of high-modulus / high-strain SCIV graphite and premiumquality SCII graphite provide a light weight and fast action that few other rods will ever know. Amen.

St. Croix’s Legend ice rods feature a patented built-in strike indicator system developed by Greg “the prowler” Wilczynski. A medalist in world ice fishing competitions, Greg spent years refining his invention. Look for Greg’s seminars throughout the north country.

GREG “THE PROWLER” WILCZYNSKI

PREMIER ICE RODS | PREMIER ICE COMBOS

LEGEND ICE RODS Ice Rod Strike Indicator System – How it Works: St. Croix’s strike indicator system is adjustable, so its sensitivity level can accommodate different lure sizes. To make the bobber more sensitive, push the spring forward through the grommet. To make it less sensitive, push it back. (illustration no. 1)

Illustration No. 1

The system is most sensitive when there is a 30-degree bend (position 2) in the spring. To find the bottom, lower the jig until the indicator returns to position 1. Then, either slowly reel up once or lift the rod slightly until the indicator is back to position 2.
