LAST MEETING (MLS) 4/15: CHI 1, HOU 1 (Pause 27 – Bruin 24)  The match was stopped for the first time in the 13th minute by referee Geoff Gamble because of a bolt of lightning and the peal of thunder. The game was halted for 70 minutes before it resumed.  In the 24th minute, the Dynamo broke through. Brian Ching peeled off the backline and sprung Will Bruin on a through ball that split the Fire center backs, and the second-year striker coolly beat Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson inside the right-hand post.  Just three minutes later, the Fire found an equalizer. After Patrick Nyarko was taken down at the top of the box, a Pavel Pardo direct kick deflected off of the back of Logan Pause, curled over goalkeeper Tally Hall, hit the underside of the crossbar and down over the line.  After 20 minutes in the second half, which included no shots on target, another bolt of lightning was sighted and Gamble pulled the players off the field for a final time. Under MLS rules, a match abandoned after the second half has kicked off is considered official.  CHICAGO FIRE (4-3-1-2): Sean Johnson - Dan Gargan, Arne Friedrich, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares Logan Pause, Pavel Pardo, Marco Pappa - Sebastian Grazzini - Patrick Nyarko, Dominic Oduro.  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Jermaine Taylor Je-Vaughn Watson, Nathan Sturgis, Luiz Camargo (Calen Carr 63), Corey Ashe - Will Bruin, Brian Ching. HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo remained unbeaten at the BBVA Compass Stadium home, getting a late winner for a 2-1 win Saturday against Philadelphia Union. The Dynamo are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 23 points from 16 games.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

LAST MATCH  The Dynamo grabbed the lead in the 20th minute. Boniek Garcia’s cross from the right found Macoumba Kandji on the edge of the box. The forward slid the ball into the path of the onrushing Brad Davis, who superbly curled the ball into the far corner.  Union pulled back to even terms just 36 seconds into the second half. Brian Carroll found Keon Daniel at the top of the box, and the Philly midfielder turned and lash a bouncing drive beyond Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall from 20 yards.  But the home side claimed the winner in the 83rd minute after Gabriel Farfan’s sent the Dynamo substitute Brian Ching tumbling to the turf. Referee Fotis Bazakos awarded a penalty and Ching converted the ensuing spot kick himself.  Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made four changes to the team that went down to a 4-2 defeat by the Montréal Impact at Stade Saputo. Boniek Garcia made his MLS debut, coming into the team with Jermaine Taylor, Luiz Camargo and Macoumba Kandji, for Colin Clark, Adam Moffat, Je-Vaughn Watson and Brian Ching.  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Jermaine Taylor, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe Boniek Garcia, Geoff Cameron, Luiz Camargo (Warren Creavalle 79), Brad Davis - Will Bruin (Brian Ching 74), Macoumba Kandji (Brian Ownby 71). TEAM NEWS  The Dynamo remained undefeated in league play at BBVA Compass Stadium, now with four wins and two draws in their first six MLS games in their new stadium.  “It was a very important three points. We came out great in the first half. I thought we came out flat-footed in the second half, but then we took it to them a little bit,” said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. “If you are a Dynamo fan, you are happy tonight that the team goes home a winner.”  After coming on as a substitute, Brian Ching was given the opportunity to take the penalty kick – he converted, his first goal at BBVA Compass Stadium. It was his first goal since April 21.  “I wanted it for a couple of reasons; it puts us in the lead, and I understand the reason Brian would want to step up and take it. I think there’s a lot of emotion behind that goal,” said Kinnear. “He’s come close a couple of times in the stadium before. He deserves it, but then again it’s a great story and you really wanted him to make it.”  Said Ching: “[Brad Davis] just came over and said, ‘Here, you take it.’ I said, ‘No, you’re the guy that usually takes it, it’s not a big deal, just take the penalty.’ And he said, ‘No, it’ll be good, hopefully it will help you kind of break the dam a little bit.’ ”  Boniek Garcia made his MLS debut, starting wide on the right and playing the entire match. It took him just 20 minutes to record his first MLS assist.  “I’m very appreciative of the opportunity,” García said. “After I arrived, I trained and talked with Dom [Kinnear, the head coach] and he asked me if I was OK to play and I said yes. … Right now I do feel tired, after two training sessions and one game, I’m definitely feeling the effects of it.”  Said Kinnear: “I thought [Boniek] had a good game. I thought he was energetic, smart on the ball he’s confident. I think for a guy to come in and to play like he did just shows you that he’s a confident player and he’s a good player. I think that it was a good debut for him and I hope he continues to play that way for us.”  After figuring in central defense for the entirety of the campaign thus far, Geoff Cameron was returned to a central midfield role, playing with Luiz Camargo. Jermaine Taylor moved from right back to central defense.  After going more than a month without a goal, Brad Davis has now scored in back-to-back games with the opening goal vs. Philadelphia.  “The guys wanted to win this game, they aren’t happy with a tie and I think you saw that even at the end of the game they’re pushing forward trying to get more goals,” said Kinnear. “I thought we did some good things and there was some good individual play. There were some decent opportunities, and at the end there was some good defending, too.” CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire extended their winning streak to three games, coming away from Livestrong Sporting Park with a 1-0 win against Sporting Kansas City on Friday evening. The Fire are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 27 points from 16 games. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came after 58 minutes. On a swift counterattack, the Fire's Marco Pappa breaking down the middle, fed Chris Rolfe on the left, then slotted the return ball low between goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen and Matt Besler and into the back of the net from the heart of the area.  Fire head coach Frank Klopas made two changes to the team that recorded a 2-1 win against the Columbus Crew at Toyota Park. Arne Friedrich came into the back four for the suspended Gonzalo Segares and Chris Rolfe started in midfield for Sebastian Grazzini.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Sean Johnson - Jalil Anibaba, Arne Friedrich (Hunter Jumper 79), Austin Berry, Dan Gargan - Logan Pause, Pavel Pardo - Patrick Nyarko (Rafael Robayo 82), Chris Rolfe, Marco Pappa (Alex 64) - Dominic Oduro. TEAM NEWS  After going the first 14 games of the season without putting together back-to-back wins, the Fire have now won three in a row.  Anytime you can win back-to-back games in this league, it’s a good feat. It is such a competitive league so that doesn’t happen too often for most teams,” said Chris Rolfe. “For us to do that now to start the summer when we really have to grind through the middle of the season, that’s really big for us.”  It was the third shutout of the season for the Fire, but their first since May 9, a span of eight games.  “We didn’t give up any goals. There were a few times they got in dangerous spots and we have to get back and work on some things but on the night we did what’s necessary to get three points and the shutout is a plus as well,” said goalkeeper Sean Johnson. “First and foremost three points which we needed against a team in our conference and the shutout for the team. I think we’ve been due for a long time and the guys deserve it.”  Marco Pappa scored for the second time in as many games, his fifth goal of the season, now tied for the Fire club lead with Dominic Oduro.  “Marco is a great player and you said it, he makes a lot of things look easy that other guys can’t even do,” said Rolfe. “Every decision that he made on that counter attack was the right one and like I said it looked easy but that play is not easy to do.”  Making his first start since returning to the Fire and Major League Soccer, Rolfe assisted on Pappa’s goal, his first on his return.  “He’s been coming on every game and had an impact in every game. Even with the heat I felt that he was very strong. I was a little concerned towards the end because he had a knock back in his ankle so we have to assess that,” said Klopas. “He’s a key player for us, it’s just technically you can see that he’s a very good player. He has the ability now to beat players off the dribble and create opportunities for himself and others anytime he gets around the goal. He’s just a great finisher, he has great feet. He’s a very good addition for us so hopefully there are no more setbacks.””  Former German Arne Friedrich made his return to the Fire starting lineup, his first appearance in the first XI since May 12 – when he was injured the first time Chicago and Sporting KC played.  “Arne Friedrich coming back obviously helped a lot. I thought that some of his defending was fantastic. He got a little bit tired in the end but I wanted to go into the game with some experienced players,” said Klopas.  With Gonzalo Segares suspended, Jalil Anibaba moved from central defense to right back, and Dan Gargan shifted sides after starting 13 games at right back.  “We needed Dan’s experience even though he normally doesn’t play on that side. But his ability now and experience to help on the defensive side helped. They went against some great forwards tonight so I was just relying a lot more on his experience,” said Klopas.  Said Johnson: “I think at any point in time we have to be able to adjust where guys can step in and do a job. Like you saw tonight, Hunter (Jumper) came on and we slid (Daniel) Gargan out to the right. At any point in time we have guys that can play anywhere on the field. That says a lot for our team especially our will and determination to win games.”

DYNAMO VS. FIRE – DYNAMO HOST CHICAGO IN KEY EASTERN CONFERENCE TILT The Houston Dynamo (6‐5‐5; 23 points) host the Chicago Fire (8‐5‐3; 27 points) on Tuesday at BBVA Compass Stadium. The fixture represents a key Eastern Conference matchup, with the Dynamo trailing the Fire by four points for fourth place in the conference standings. The Dynamo earned a 2‐1 win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, with goals from Brad Davis and Brian Ching. The Fire won its third consecutive game on Friday, a 1‐0 win at Sporting Kansas City with a goal from Marco Pappa. Tuesday marks the second of three meetings between Houston and Chicago in 2012. The Dynamo and Fire drew 1‐1 at Toyota Park on April 15 in a match that was suspended in the 66th minute due to a lightning storm. The Dynamo return to Chicago on Sept. 2 for the final regular season meeting between the clubs.

Houston vs. Chicago The Dynamo are 6‐3‐4 in regular season meetings with the Fire, including the 1‐1 draw on April 15 at Chicago. In that meeting, Will Bruin scored his first goal of the season, off an assist from Brian Ching, for a 1‐0 lead in the 24th minute. Just three minutes later the Fire equalized with a deflected goal from a free kick. Pavel Pardo took a free kick from 25 yards that deflected off the back of Logan Pause and into the net for the tying goal. The game included a 70‐minute weather delay in the first half before the second delay ended the match after 66 minutes. The clubs drew 1‐1 in both meetings in 2011. The Dynamo won five consecutive games against the Fire from July 7, 2007 to Aug. 9, 2009. Houston is 3‐2‐1 in home games against Chicago.

DYNAMO NOTES 

Dynamo newcomer Boniek García makes impressive debut: Honduran midfielder Boniek García made his debut in the Dynamo starting lineup on Saturday and made immediate contributions. García began the sequence and earned an assist on Brad Davis’ opening goal and was a part of the buildup before Brian Ching earned a penalty kick in the second half. García played 90 minutes in his MLS debut. The 27‐year‐old Designated Player has played for Honduran powerhouse C.D. Olimpia since 2007 after his first tenure with the club from 2003‐06. With García, Olimpia captured the 2011‐12 Honduran League Apertura and Clausura championships. The midfielder debuted for the Honduras national team in 2005 and has 69 appearances for his country, including five appearances in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Dynamo will face Olimpia in CONCACAF Champions League group play on Aug. 30 in Honduras and Oct. 23 in Houston.

Ching ties Preki on MLS all‐time goal list: Dynamo forward Brian Ching scored his 79th career MLS regular season goal with his game‐winning penalty on Saturday vs. Philadelphia. Ching tied Preki, the Serbian‐born U.S. international who tallied 79 goals for Kansas City and Miami from 1996‐2005. With Ching’s next goal, he will tie Josh Wolff (active player for D.C. United) and Brian McBride for 12th on the all‐time scoring list.

Ching passes Ralston on game‐winning goals list: Ching’s goal on Saturday also marked his 20th career MLS regular season game‐winning goal. The game‐winner moved Ching past Dynamo assistant coach Steve Ralston, New York forward Kenny Cooper and Roy Lassiter for 12th on the all‐time chart.

Davis passes De Ro for second on Dynamo scoring list: Brad Davis’ goal in the first half on Saturday was his 25th regular season goal with the Dynamo. He moved past Dwayne De Rosario into second on the franchise list.

Houston’s Home Streak: The Dynamo have not lost a home game in over a year, with their last home defeat on June 18, 2011, a 2‐0 loss to the Columbus Crew. The Dynamo are unbeaten in 15 consecutive home games (playoffs included), spanning the final nine games at Robertson Stadium and the first six games at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Dynamo productive in final 15 minute: Ching’s goal in the 83rd minute on Saturday was Houston’s sixth goal in the final 15 minutes of games this year. The Dynamo are tied for fourth in the league in goals scored in the final 15 minutes (San Jose leads with 11). Last year, Houston scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, the second most in MLS (Seattle).

Dynamo are defensive in final 15 minutes: While the Dynamo have scored six goals in the final 15 minutes of games this year, they have allowed just one goal in the final quarter hour (June 23, at Montreal). Houston and Chicago (1 goal each) are tied for the fewest goals allowed in the final 15 minutes of games.

East Coast Bias: The Dynamo are currently in a stretch of 14 consecutive games against Eastern Conference teams. Houston is 2‐3‐4 vs. the Eastern Conference, but six of the nine games were played on the road. The next time the Dynamo face a team from the Western Conference is Sept. 6, when they host Real Salt Lake.

Bruin bags ninth goal: Dynamo forward Will Bruin scored his ninth goal of the season with a first‐half equalizer in on June 23 at Montreal. The second‐year forward is tied for third in the MLS Golden Boot race with Thierry Henry and Chris Pontius. The trio tied for this place trail Chris Wondolowski (14 goals) and Kenny Cooper (11).

Bruin in historic Dynamo territory: Bruin’s 9 goals are the most for a Dynamo player since Brian Ching set a franchise record with 13 goals in 2008. Bruin reached 9 goals in the fastest number of games (15) in team history. Ching reached 9 goals in Houston’s 16th game in 2006, but Ching missed six of those games due to U.S. men’s national team duties for the 2006 World Cup. Ching scored his ninth goal of 2006 in his tenth game of the season. Bruin’s 9 goals in 2012 have come in a 12‐game stretch (April 15 at Chicago to present). The next two best goal‐scoring stretches in Dynamo history are Ching in 2008, when he scored 9 goals in his first 18 games played (the 9 goals came in a 12‐game stretch) and Dwayne De Rosario, who scored 9 goals in a 21‐game span in 2006.

Three in a row for Bruin: Will Bruin scored in three consecutive games (6/16, 6/20, 6/23) for the second time this season (4/15, 4/21, 4/28), with four goals in each three‐game scoring streak. He is the first Dynamo player with a pair of three‐ game scoring streaks in the same season, and just the second player to record two streaks overall (Ching). His current streak marks the sixth time a Dynamo player has scored in three consecutive games (Bruin 2012 (twice); Ching 2006, 2008; Joseph Ngwenya 2007; Stuart Holden 2009). In a similar feat, Brad Davis’ streak of 45 consecutive starts was broken at Chicago on April 15 due to a calf strain.

BBVA Compass Stadium opener: The Dynamo opened the 13th soccer‐specific stadium in Major League Soccer on May 12. On a gorgeous, 82‐degree day in front of a sell‐out crowd of 22,039, the Dynamo honored past legends, including Wade Barrett, Pat Onstad, Eddie Robinson and Craig Waibel in a pregame ceremony that included the unveiling of 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup championship banners. Brad Davis provided a signature opening moment, delivering a beautiful, curling 30‐ yard strike for the game‐winning goal in the 67th minute.

Last year, Houston scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, the second most in MLS (Seattle).

Six years after the club’s first match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo roster: Brian Ching and Brad Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front office as an assistant coach with the team’s Youth Academy and as a color analyst on TV broadcasts.

The Dynamo opened scoring in th the 24 minute when Will Bruin slotted home the game’s first goal. Three minutes later the Men in Red found the equalizer when Pavel Pardo’s free kick deflected off the back of Logan Pause, hit the underside of the crossbar th and found the back of the net. The match was first halted in the 13 minute th than officially called in the 65 minute due to severe weather. • The Fire will face The Houston Dynamo three times in the MLS Regular Season. After hosting the Dynamo in April, the Men in Red will travel to BBVA Compass Stadium July 3 before hosting the return leg at Toyota Park September 2.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE th The Chicago Fire (8-5-3, 27 pts.) enter their 15 season of MLS play after rebounding midseason to post a 9-9-16 record, which left the side three points outside of the playoffs in 2011. Locking up the likes of Pavel Pardo and Logan Pause this past offseason, the team returns the entirety of its starting eleven to Toyota Park in 2012, while adding Uruguayan striker Federico Puppo, Brazilian midfielder Alex and Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo to support the Ghanaian tandem of Dominic Oduro and Patrick Nyarko. The team also reinforced their defensive corps in the offseason by adding German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich as well as two young defenders via the MLS SuperDraft in center back Austin Berry and left back Hunter Jumper who will be expected to provide cover for the likes of Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares and Dan Gargan in 2012. - vs. Houston Dynamo – 7/3/2012 CHICAGO FIRE EXPOSE SPORTING KC 1-0 th The Chicago Fire utilized Marco Pappa’s counter-attack goal in the 58 minute and a stand-up performance from Sean Johnson to defeat Sporting Kansas City at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park Friday night in Kansas City, Kan. The smash and grab performance gave the Fire its third straight win against an Eastern Conference opponent. Battling near 100 degree temperatures both teams looked for possession early. Sporting Kansas City began to apply pressure after the initial 10 th minutes and found an early opportunity in the 14 minute. A deflected Graham Zusi shot fell to the feet of Kei Kamara and the Sierra Leon striker sent his effort toward goal, but Sean Johnson angled to get his hand on the ball to parry it away and keep the score level. The Fire saw its best chance of the first half come just two minutes later as Pappa tracked a ball in the right corner. The playmaking midfielder swung a pin-point cross to Oduro just outside of the six-yard box. Oduro volleyed his one-time effort on frame, but Sporting Kansas City ‘keeper Jimmy Nielsen knocked the ball away to preserve the 0-0 score line. After enduring relentless pressure from the home side the Men in Red found the opportunity to pounce on the counter at the start of the second half. Pinned after a Sporting Kansas City free kick, Dan Gargan intercepted a Kamara cross and played Pappa into space in the middle of the park. Pappa carried the ball forward before playing an onrushing Chris Rolfe on the left side of the box. Rolfe calmly took a touch before finding Pappa wide open in the middle of the box. The Guatemalan international lashed the ball past Nielsen and into the back of the net to give the Fire a 1-0 advantage on 58 minutes. th

Sporting Kansas City nearly found the equalizer in the 76 minute when Sporting defender Seth Sinovic drifted into the attacking third before sending a lofted cross to Kamara inside the penalty area. The Sporting forward powered his headed effort on goal only to see a diving Sean Johnson collect the effort to keep the Fire on top. nd

Trailing by a goal, Sporting continued to push numbers forward in search of the equalizer. In the 92 minute Kamara found Teal Bunbury at the top of the 18. Showing off a fine piece of skill the U.S. International flicked the ball to himself before turning a firing a shot wide of the far post. Frank Klopas made a number of substitutions in an effort to kill the game. Alex, playing in his first match in a Fire top did well to evade Sporting st defenders and showed his skill-set setting up a Rolfe shot in the 91 minute. In the end, the Fire’s defense held as Johnson tallied five saves and earned his second shutout of the season. TH

ODURO SET TO MAKE 50 APPERANCE An appearance in Tuesday evening’s match will mark the fiftieth time the Fire’s speedy Ghanaian forward Dominic Oduro has suited up for the Men in Red. Oduro has appeared in every single match since he was traded to the Fire from the Dynamo on March 23, 2011. Since the trade, Oduro lead the Fire with 12 goals in 2011 to become the first player since Damani Ralph in 2004 to score double digit goals in an MLS campaign. For his efforts, the Ghanaian striker was named the club’s Most Valuable Player as well as Section 8 Chicago’s Supporters Player of the Year in 2011. Oduro is currently tied with Marco Pappa as the team leaders with 5 goals. Both Oduro and Pappa have notched three game-winners. PAPPA MOVES UP THE CHARTS th Pappa’s strike in the 58 minute of Friday night’s match was the twenty-fifth of his Fire career and moved him within one goal of fourth place on the club’s All Time Goal Scoring charts. Peter Nowak currently holds sole possession of fourth place with 26 total MLS Regular Season goals. FIRE GO FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN The Fire will be hunting for their fourth consecutive win on Tuesday evening. The Men in Red have not won four straight MLS Regular Season matches since June and July 2005 when the Fire defeated Real Salt Lake (6/26), D.C. United (6/29), Chivas USA (7/2) and the New England Revolution (7/9). ROLFE AND FRIEDRICH RETURN TO STARTING XI The Fire’s Chris Rolfe played his first match as a starter since the 2009 Eastern Conference Final. Rolfe added the game-winning assist and went the full 90 minutes. German defender Arne Friedrich also made his return to the Fire’s Starting XI since being injured in the Fire’s game against Sporting Kansas City May 12. Friedrich started and played 79 minutes before leaving the match for minor cramping. Friedrich missed five games while recuperating from a th hamstring injury and made his return June 23 against the Columbus Crew when he came on as a substitute in the 79 minute.
