Buying the Right Mattress: The Definitive Guide Hi folks. My name is Jake Gayle. Like yourself probably, for many years I’ve been sleeping on a terrible innerspring mattress, constantly waking up with back pains and a terrible mood. And last year I decided to change that and I didn’t know where to start. There were just so many choices and materials and I was pretty overwhelmed. So I decided to make this website featuring what I have learned, so that anyone can benefit. Why is this even important? While you may just go and choose a random mattress, if you consider how much of your life you spend sleeping (about one third if you didn’t already know), you come to realize that what you sleep on can actually have a huge impact on your mood, health and overall life quality. So with that in mind I decided to do my homework before rushing in to buy anything. Where do I start? It’s overwhelming. Well, this is where I come in. Continue reading this article and then check out the rest of the site for a lot more indepth information. Let’s begin! 1. Aspects to consider before choosing a mattress The first thing to know is that one mattress does not fit everyone, this is why there are so many models. The important thing is that the mattress fits you, not the other way around. The key is that a good mattress should fit your body, maintaining the natural balance of the curve of your back. Not apply force or bend your back. It should be firm enough to hold it in the correct position, and soft enough to conform to it. The mattress you choose should be governed by three basic factors:

  

Your weight and height The position in which you sleep Your particular requirements

1.a Height The mattress should be at least 10 inches taller than yourself. 1.b Weight You need a mattress that properly supports your weight. An optimal mattress should be firmer for some and softer for others; It must yield in areas of less weight and be stronger in the heavier areas of the body such as the pelvis and shoulders.

If it is very hard it will not suit your spine and you will be sore from the effort. If it is too soft, your neck will be difficult to align with your back A good mattress should provide support to all parts of your anatomy and maintain the normal curve of your body shape. 1.c How do you sleep? An important factor you should consider is the position in which you sleep, as this will give you more clues about which models best suit your body. Side: It is said that this is the best sleeping position. It is important to take care of the back line with a pillow covering the space between the neck and shoulder. For this position we recommend a mattress that combines firmness and softness to support your body in the best way. A firm mattress is recommended for this position. Backs: This position is not usually recommended, as it is more difficult to maintain the balance of the cervical curvature. It is best to use a pillow to fill the space between the mattress and neck to keep the neck in a neutral position. A slightly firmer mattress is recommended for this position, as you need support for the neck and lumbar region. Face down: This position is the least desirable because it forces the curvature of the back unharmoniously. If this is your sleeping position, you must choose a firm mattress, to give you good support to the neck and lumbar region. For more on this read about The Best Position to Sleep in 1.d Your particular requirements Another very important consideration when choosing your mattress is represented by your particular needs. You should feel comfortable in the mattress. This is somewhat subjective however. Back pain: Back pain can be mitigated or enhanced by the quality of your mattress and the position you choose to sleep. It is important to consult your physician if you have any problems. Remember that the quality of the mattress is vital. Price range: The mattress is vital for your health and your back. Remember that when buying a mattress you are making an investment. A mattress of low quality lasts much less and can cause long-term problems for your back. 2. Learn to recognize the key parts of a mattress You may be confused at first with the technologies and materials that each mattress has, and you may not know how to determine which is best for you. But it is not as complicated as it seems.

2.a Balance As we read above, the most important thing is the balance that the mattress offers your body and your spine. It is important to know that the technology used and the thickness of the mattress determine the general quality. The current high quality mattresses are thicker and higher than those sold 15 years ago. 2.b Support The support offered by the mattress is directly linked to the number of springs it has (unless it is entirely foam and has no springs, in which case the density of the foam is the important factor) 2.c The comfort level Depends on your personal preferance but it is usually recommended to choose a firmer rather than softer mattress. 2.d The filling The filling of the mattress is as important as the number of springs you have. Ideally, always choose the best materials and the denser foams. A greater amount of padding and cushioning offer greater support and better shape. Currently memory foam mattresses are quite popular. A higher quality will be stronger and have a better feeling. The best fabrics are those with largest percentage of cotton: they are soft and durable. 3. Maintenance Tips Did you know the average length of a good mattress is 10 years?Proper care is important, so that you keep it in top condition for longer time. Here we will give you useful information that they will serve to maximize the lifespan of your mattress:

    

It is recommended to change the mattress and bed frame at once. Remember that current mattresses are heavier than the old ones, so they need better support. A new mattress on an old foundation is not always a good idea Try renewing the full game. When you put the mattress on the bed make sure that the bed does not have edges that could damage it. We recommend that you air the mattress every day between 5 and 10 minutes. Once a week you should vacuum the mattress. This way you avoid the accumulation of dust mites which can cause allergies and asthma to you or your family. Once a month it is recommended that you turn around your mattress, turning from left to right and top to bottom. This helps prolong its life.

4. When should you change your mattress? As you already have been told, the life of a good mattress is 10 years. However, there are some facts that can help you know if your mattress is not working as it should.
