KNOWLEDGE by Chrondomalacia: Knee Cap Pain The most common cause of knee pain occurs around and under the knee cap. Runner’s knee, chrondomalcia, patella femoral pain syndrome are all terms used to describe roughening and inflammation of the cartilage in the knee joint. The knee cap is shaped like the hull of a boat underneath and runs up and down through a v-shaped channel as the leg extends and contracts. Both the underside of the cap and the channel are coated in cartilage. The cartilage, 100’s of times smoother than glass when you are born, naturally wears and roughens as you age. Slight misalignments between the cap and its channel greatly increase this natural roughening and can lead to inflammation and pain.

Runner’s Knee

BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP 1. Decrease training mileage and intensity at least 50% for 1-2 weeks. Then slowly increase back in 10% weekly increments. 2. Perform a 10-minute ice-massage around the edges of the knee cap 2-3 times daily. 3. Gently stretch your hamstrings and quadriceps daily. 4. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it’s approved by your physician. 5. Perform slow, shallow (not all the way to 90 degrees), onelegged squats in a standing position, using one hand or finger to balance against a wall or door jam. Keep the knee behind the big toe when viewing from above, and don’t let your knee slant in or out (keep all leg bones aligned vertically.) Do these prior to workouts to activate and strengthen the muscles that control the cap. 6. Wear supportive shoes that are correct for your biomechanics. Purchase from a specialty store like FITniche that can accurately assess your gait. This is often one of the most helpful things you can do for your knee, as the correct shoes keep the knee cap aligned properly in its channel. 7. Wear semi-rigid to rigid inserts in all your shoes to support the arches. Let a specialty store like FITniche guide you through the selection process, as this helps keep the cap and its channel aligned too. 8. Use a patella strap to help the cap track in a better plane.

OVERVIEW A common source of front-ofknee pain is chrondomalacia, also known as runner’s knee. Symptoms If you experience Pain around or underneath the knee cap when walking up or down stairs or when standing up from a bent leg position, you may have iliotibial band syndrome. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and the 1 mile fun run will begin at 8:05 a.m. Brunchies FREE pancake breakfast immediately following the race. Registration closes at 7:30 a.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Pre race day registration will be available Friday, Oct. 30, from 5-7 p.m. at the Youth & Family Center.

Registration is online at www.active.com. 5K: $25 ($30 day of race) One Mile - $15 ($20 day of race) 5K children 12 & younger: $15 ($20 day of race) Register early! The race is limited to the first 500 runners. Preregister by Oct. 1 and get a free T-shirt!

LOCATION: The race will be held in the heart of beautiful Westchase in Northwest Hillsborough County. Start and finish lines for the runs will be located in the West Park Village Town Center. See website for complete route maps. Events will be held rain or shine.

AWARDS: Top 3 M/F Overall, Top Masters and Grand Masters M/F and 3 deep in standard 5 year age groups for the 10K & 5K runs. All runners will be entered into a raffle for great prizes, gift certificates, and more!

DIRECTIONS: From downtown Tampa (I-275) proceed north on Veterans Expressway to the Linebaugh exit. Proceed west on Linebaugh through the entrance to Westchase at the corner of Sheldon and Linebaugh. Entrances to West Park Village will exist one block east and west of Linebaugh’s intersection with Montague Street.

Gone are the days of doubling up on conventional bras in an attempt to gain that extra support needed to eliminate bounce and sway. A quality and well-fitted sports bra is the #1 essential piece of apparel for the active woman. It provides both comfort and support for delicate breast tissues. It also eliminates the distraction of trying to “keep them under control” by slowing down or altering the preferred movement patterns of the activity at hand. This may lead to tightness and strain in certain muscle groups, especially the hips, upper torso and neck. Your normal gait pattern may also be compromised which can lead to a variety of lower body aches and pains. Who thought? The best sports bra for you isn’t worth a hill of beans unless it fits. It is estimated that 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra! Seek out a specialty store with associates trained in the bra-fitting process, and one with a nice variety of options. A proper and well-fitted sports bra will be transforming. Your activity level is also a determining factor in your choice, be it low-impact for exercise activities such as moderate walking, yoga and pilates or high-impact for running and running related sports. Based on your particular needs, there are sports bras with compression and sometimes encapsulation or cups (for shaping and modesty) for a secure, body-hugging fit. These usually come in sizing XS-XL. Add encapsulation along with wider under bands and straps to get a stabilizing fit, with AB and C/D or band and cup sizing such as 34C. And finally, yet wider and stronger bands and straps for a fully loaded, controlling fit, with band and cup sizing, exclusively. The following are some rules-of-thumb regarding your sports bra. They do lose elasticity and cup shape and should optimally be purchased with each new pair of running shoes, and minimally, once a year. If your bra begins chafing, it is probably worn out. Frequent runners or exercisers should always have three on hand.

If you have to use Body Glide, your bra probably does not fit.

Any squishing or spillage usually requires going up a cup size.

The fit of the bottom band is very important as 80% of a sports bra’s support comes from it. If you can fit two fingers under it, it’s most likely a good fit.
