refuge contains North Carolina’s largest natural lake, Lake Mattamuskeet, and is a haven for endangered species such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons and American alligators. Completed in 1915, Mattamuskeet Lodge was the largest pumping station in the world but eventually closed in 2000. Visit the grounds to learn more about the lodge. www.hydecounty.org
