Duke Dog Pride

95%

Duke Club fundraising has increased by 95% over the last five years. This growth is a reflection of JMU alumni and fans’ immense passion for the Dukes, and their willingness to support our mission. We will continue to move forward through the generosity of our current donors and the addition of new Duke Club members.

Goals for 2012

Dear JMU Family and Friends, The past twelve months mark, yet, another record year for the Duke Club. In 2011, our annual gifts increased by 38%, and our membership increased by 40%. These are remarkable statistics, and they reflect the growing support and generosity of our alumni and fans. The result of your investment has been success in competition and in the classroom. In the last two years, JMU has won more CAA Championships than any other school. More importantly, our student-athletes are graduating at a rate 12% higher than the national average. Your support makes these achievements possible. I thank you for all that you do. For those who are not currently Duke Club members, I hope you will join us in our mission. We strive to achieve excellence on and off the field, and produce student-athletes who will go on to lead meaningful and productive lives. It all begins with resources. In this booklet you will find out more about who we are and how you can help. I thank you for your time, energy, and passion. With your support, we will continue to make JMU Athletics the very best program it can be. Go Dukes!

Scholarship Gap Accomplishing these goals will provide significantly more funding for deserving student-athletes. Also, by reaching 3,500 members we will continue to grow our foundation of donors, which last year surpassed most of our CAA competitors and peer institutions across the nation.

4

Scholarship expenditures for 20112012 JMU student-athletes total $6.3M, which is an increase from $4.0M in 2007. A priority for the Duke Club is to close this gap each year by growth in membership and participation in the 110% program.

Why did you choose JMU? “I chose to come to JMU over other schools because, overall, it had the best mix of academics, athletics, and social life. I loved every visit that I took and felt comfortable on campus from day one.”

Why did you choose JMU? “After I took my official visit, I knew it was the school for me. The soccer program has always been competitive, the academics are highly regarded, and the campus is beautiful. In the end, the decision I had to make was an easy one.”

Why did you choose JMU? “I am really close to my family and this is home. But the fact is, the women’s program here is very good and nationally recognized. The coaches and players all made me feel really welcome.”

What does having a scholarship mean to you? “Having a scholarship leaves me with an incredible feeling of gratitude for the people who make it possible. It is a constant reminder everyday, to work hard, and take nothing for granted.”

What has been your most memorable moment as an athlete at JMU? “That would easily have to be the entire 2011 season. Our team was comprised of a tight-knit group of guys both on and off the field. Our chemistry played a key factor in the success we had, making it one of the best seasons JMU men’s soccer has had in a long time.”

Why did you choose JMU? “Coach came to watch me play in a couple of golf tournaments. I could sense that he really believed in me and my abilities so I went with my gut feeling. I believed in my instinct that JMU was going to be a great university and it turned out to be true!”

What does having a scholarship mean to you? “I am very thankful. Both my parents and my brother attended here, and I was very happy to follow in their footsteps. As studentathletes, we work very hard and try to earn what we are given.”

What has been your most memorable moment as an athlete at JMU? “Being recognized at a football game for my athletic achievements freshman year, as First Team CAA and CAA Rookie of the Year. It was a great feeling to be in front of a huge crowd and being congratulated by students, alumni, and locals.”

Rep System

Other TICKETED SPORTS In order to continue growing our level of support, we need your help. Consider becoming a Duke Club Rep and a part of a national network of passionate JMU fans. As a Rep, you will have the opportunity to network with JMU alumni in your area and talk to them about the importance of giving to the JMU Duke Club. In addition to new member recruitment, our Reps are the foundation of all our regional Duke Club events. Our Duke Club Reps are responsible for numerous socials, golf outings, viewing parties, and much more throughout the year. The Duke Club Rep System also allows for multiple rewards and recognition opportunities throughout the year. There are also events that are exclusive to our Reps where you can get an inside look at JMU Athletics. If you are considering becoming a Duke Club Rep, contact Taylor Adkins at adkintstb@jmu.edu for more information.

ways WAYS to give TO GIVE Annually Duke Club membership is based on calendar year giving. Duke Club gifts are used by JMU Athletics to support student-athlete scholarships and the general operating budget. GIVE ONLINE Go to JMUSports.com and click “donate.” CASH OR CHECK Checks should be made payable to the JMU Foundation and note “Duke Club” on the memo line. CALL Call (540) 568-6461 to give over the phone. Stock gifts Appreciated securities are an option to support the Duke Club. Please =contact the staff for more information on transferring stock. MATCHING GIFTS If donors are eligible to apply for matching gifts through their employer, they may submit their company’s match form to the Duke Club with each payment to be matched. (Restrictions and rules specific to each company apply.) To apply a matching gift to a Duke Club annual pledge, the donor must agree to pay all balances not received through the match by the end of the calendar year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tax Implications & Matching Gifts James Madison University Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Therefore, all or part of your Duke Club donation - the amount that exceeds the value of any benefits you receive - may be tax deductible. All benefits associated with each specific giving level are automatically accepted by the donor unless the donor submits in writing to the Duke Club the benefits he/she wants to decline. Additionally, the benefits declined must be received along with the donor’s first payment toward his/her annual pledge. A declining of benefits is irrevocable for the 2012 Duke Club Year. Current federal income tax law allows an 80% deduction of a contribution to educational institutions where, as a result of the contribution, the donor received preferred seating rights. Contributions that neither directly nor indirectly result in preferred seating rights may be fully deductible. Decline All Benefits: There is also an area on the pledge/donation card where you may indicate that you wish to decline ALL benefits associated with your donation including ticket and parking priority based on Duke Club ranking. Declining ALL benefits makes your donation to the Duke Club 100% tax deductible.

Other Ways to Give Campaign for Bridgeforth Stadium JMU Athletics has successfully met the fundraising goal for the Campaign for Bridgeforth Stadium. While the goal of raising $6,000,000 in private support for the renovations to the stadium has been accomplished, there are still opportunities for individuals, families, or groups to make a commitment to this or other capital projects to demonstrate their support for JMU Athletics. As all of our athletic facilities continue to require upgrades and renovations, there are opportunities to support each of our athletic programs in addition to your annual gift to the Duke Club.

Legacy Gifts to JMU Athletics Opportunities to support JMU Athletics exist beyond making annual gifts to the Duke Club or giving to specific capital projects. The ability to establish a legacy of giving exists by supporting JMU through a deferred or estate gift. Making a gift through an estate plan can have favorable tax benefits as well as helping to ensure long-term support for JMU Athletics. To discuss your long-term giving interests and how a gift through your estate may be a beneficial consideration, contact Kevin Weaver at weaverkk@jmu.edu.

Duke Dog Plaza You have the opportunity to purchase a lasting location around the Duke Dog statue in front of the Plecker Center. Bricks (4”x8”) and pavers (8”x8”) are available through the Duke Club. Each engraved brick is a permanent display of your support for JMU Athletics. For more information on buying a brick or paver, please contact the Duke Club office or visit www.JMUSports.com. We invite you to contact Kevin Weaver (weaverkk@jmu.edu) for more information on how you can support the capital projects for JMU Athletics.

The Graduate Duke Club is a program within the Duke Club, designed for JMU alumni who have graduated within the last four years. This program is a great way to continue your support of JMU Athletics upon graduation. Your gift to the Duke Club will receive double the credit toward your Duke Club benefits. For example: any Graduate Duke Club gift of $250 is eligible for the Silver Level ($500) of benefits. Therefore, benefits such as hospitality, premium seating ,and parking, will only require half of the normal donation amount. In addition, the Graduate Duke Club is a great opportunity to network with other JMU alumni through regional Duke Club chapters. When you join the Graduate Duke Club, you will receive information about events in your area where you can meet other members of the JMU Nation.
