JMU Athletics Mission Statement

Duke Club Mission Statement

We guide and support the James Madison University student-athletes in their quest for excellence - academically, athletically, and socially. Above all else, we exist to prepare our student-athletes for productive and meaningful lives.

The Duke Club is the fundraising arm for James Madison University Athletics. Through its annual fund drive, the Duke Club raises unrestricted contributions in support of student-athlete scholarships and the athletic budget. Additionally, the Duke Club aids athletic facility enhancements and other needs through capital campaigns.

3 | Letter from the Director of Athletics

A Letter From the Director of Athletics The support of our alumni and fans has been the driving force of JMU Athletics in our ascent to national prominence over the past 15 years. Each year, our 18 athletic programs compete for conference championships and NCAA playoff opportunities. Your generosity is the crucial element that makes possible the opportunities for our student-athletes to achieve excellence in their academic, athletic and social environments. The visible accolades are easy to see, but even more important is the fact that contributions to the Duke Club help bring wonderful changes to the lives of our student-athletes by providing opportunities to hundreds of young men and women to join the JMU family and earn a world-class education while competing at the highest level. Each year, the Duke Club challenges you to support our student-athletes at a higher level, and each year your gifts result in record totals. On behalf of all of JMU Athletics, please accept our sincere gratitude and appreciation for your faith in our program and your generosity in supporting its growth. In the next several pages you will see how your contribution makes a difference for the Dukes. If you are not a current donor, I challenge you to join the over 3,000 members and help JMU produce champions in the field of competition and in life. Thank you again for your loyal and generous support!

Impact of Giving | 4

Impactof Giving Student-Athlete Scholarship Support

Scholarships are the lifeblood of a successful athletics program. Scholarships are not complimentary admissions to the University, but are in fact paid expenditures of the athletics department. Last year JMU allocated more than $6.3M in scholarship support.

General Operating Budget

This budget is used to fund significant needs such as recruiting, equipment, and travel. Funding these areas is critical to the success of our teams and our ability to attract first class student-athletes and coaches.

Goals for

2013

University Recognition

Athletics is in a unique position to market the University as a whole and attract people to campus. By competing at high levels throughout Virginia and the country, JMU Athletics connects the University with prospective students, potential employers, potential donors, and the community.

Why did you choose JMU? It’s a great campus environment, great academics, and a great community to be a part of.

Why did you choose JMU? I chose JMU because of the atmosphere, and it was the perfect distance away from home. The coaching staff and the students made it an easy choice.

Why did you choose JMU? JMU is a beautiful school and is a big difference from the big city. JMU has an amazing academic standing and is ranked as one of the best universities in the country. This is a championship school for all sports, and it was a no brainer to spend my college years here.

Why did you choose JMU? I chose JMU because I feel like it fit me the best out of all the schools I looked at. I thought it was absolutely gorgeous. It sounds cliché, but it took my breath away.

HOMETOWN: Columbus, Ohio

What’s the best part about being a student-athlete at JMU? The best part is the support of studentathletes, our facilities, and the way the crowd rallies behind you. What is the feeling you get from hearing fans in the crowd and how does that affect your play? That’s the best feeling in the world. Knowing that you have the 6th man in the stands definitely makes you play a lot harder. I am grateful for every single one of them. What would you say to the JMU Duke Club donors knowing they helped get you where you are at JMU? Thank you. We may not show it all the time, but we are very appreciative for the things that they have done for us. Words can’t say enough but once again, thank you.

HOMETOWN: Downingtown, PA

What’s the best part about being a student-athlete at JMU? The best part about being a student athlete is coming in and already having a family, especially freshman year. There is a sense of family with our team and I always have people to go to. What is the feeling you get from hearing fans in the crowd and how does that affect your play? I think it’s awesome to have the support that we have here at JMU. It always pumps us up even more to have fans at games. What would you say to the JMU Duke Club Donors knowing they helped get you where you are at JMU? I would say thank you so much. It’s a dream that I’ve had growing up, all my life, so it is awesome that they helped me to get here.

HOMETOWN: Philadelphia, PA

What is the best part about being a studentathlete at JMU? You want to push yourself to achieve greatness. You are also able to network and meet a lot of people and help others in the community which helps you grow as a person. What is the feeling you get from hearing fans in the crowd and how does that affect your play? The fans roar in celebration and intimidate other teams with their energy; I love it. The JMU fans make me play harder, and without them, playing on Saturdays wouldn’t be so fun. What would you say to the JMU Duke Club Donors knowing they helped get you where you are at JMU? I want to say thank you, and everything that is done for us is greatly appreciated. Being a part of the Student Duke Club is my way of paying back to the school. I love to represent this school, this team, and everyone who BLEEDS PURPLE and supports the JMU NATION.

HOMETOWN: Tampa, FL

What’s the best part about being a studentathlete at JMU? Being able to compete in games and play the sport you love, and attend an amazing school. It’s the best of both worlds. What is the feeling you get from hearing fans in the crowd and how does that affect your play? When I hear the fans it gets my adrenaline pumping, and it’s just so awesome how much the JMU nation supports JMU athletics. What would you say to the JMU Duke Club Donors knowing they helped get you where you are at JMU? I would like to say to the Duke Club donors thank you very much for providing me with this wonderful opportunity to come to an amazing school and allowing me to fulfill my dreams.

9 | Letterwinner Chapter

Letterwinner Chapter It is important that our former student-athletes stay engaged with JMU by joining the Letterwinner Chapter, which helps keep JMU competitive and supports student-athletes who are following in their footsteps. The Lettterwinner Chapter falls under the guidelines and benefit levels of the Duke Club but allows ten percent of a member’s gift to be directed to a specific sport. The remainder supports student-athlete scholarships and the general operating budget.

WIN $5,000 FOR YOUR SPORT Letterwinner team competition is based on the percentage of former student-athletes giving vs. total alumni for their sport. The team with the highest giving percentage will receive $5,000 for the sport’s operating budget.

Student Duke Club

Graduate Duke Club

The JMU Student Duke Club (SDC) is the student booster organization affiliated with the James Madison University Duke Club. It is a non-profit organization and acts as a chapter of the Duke Club. The mission of the SDC is to create an athletic giving culture on campus, encourage and lead the student body in attendance at athletics events, promote school spirit, and show support of the JMU Student-Athletes. The Student Duke Club also provides the opportunity for students to earn points toward membership to the Duke Club before they even graduate! The SDC makes one of the largest annual gifts to the Duke Club, over $20,000 at the Full Scholarship membership level.

The Graduate Duke Club is a program within the Duke Club, designed for JMU alumni who have graduated within the last four years. This program is a great way to continue your support of JMU Athletics upon graduation. Your gift to the Duke Club will receive double the credit toward your Duke Club benefits. For example, any GDC gift of $250 is eligible for the Silver Level ($500) of benefits. Therefore, benefits such as hospitality, premium seating, and parking only require half of the normal donation amount. In addition, the GDC is a great opportunity to network with other JMU alumni through regional Duke Club chapters. When you join the Graduate Duke Club, you will receive information about events in your area where you can meet other members of the JMU Nation.

Duke Club Priority is a process that provides active Duke Club members a ranking based on accumulation of points through their support of the program. This ranking is used by Duke Club members to access tickets, parking, and to improve their seat locations if requested and available. Priority Points are calculated based on various factors, including amount of current gift, lifetime giving history, and consecutive years as a donor.

13 | Reparking, Reseating & Hospitality Changes

Football Reparking In 2013 the Duke Club will introduce football reparking for all season ticket holders. As with reseating, reparking will be conducted based on Duke Club ranking and giving levels. Donors will have the opportunity to maintain their current parking spot through a Reparking Exemption. The details of the program and the exemption are outlined below. Why is the Duke Club conducting a football reparking program? Reparking provides an opportunity for donors to improve their parking location based on their Duke Club ranking. A donor’s ranking is a reflection of their current and past support of JMU Athletics. Without a reparking program, many generous and loyal donors would never have the opportunity to improve their parking location. How did the Duke Club develop this system of reparking? The Duke Club researched more than a dozen peer institutions, conducted targeted donor surveys, and worked with the Duke Club Board of Directors (an advisory Board of donors). The resulting program best met the primary goals of this process, which were to provide merit-based opportunities for donors to relocate their parking, while allowing deserving donors a method to keep their spot. How will the reparking process work? Every season ticket holder will receive an appointment to select their parking spot online. A donor’s selection time is based solely on Duke Club ranking. At a donor’s time of selection, he/ she will be able to view all available parking and select a spot based on their giving level. If a

donor has received a Reparking Exemption, their current parking location will be held for them. The donor may still access their appointment time and relocate at that time, if they so choose. If a donor does not select a parking spot during their appointment, a spot will be selected upon their behalf based on giving level and rank. How does a Reparking Exemption work? If a donor gives at a level above the minimum requirement of their current lot, they will be able to maintain their exact location. For example, the minimum gift requirement to park in Godwin Field is the Director’s Level ($2,000). If a donor who parks in Godwin Field makes a Crown Level ($3,500) gift, he/she will automatically receive a Reparking Exemption and has the rights to their current spot. How will P-Lot and G-Lot be affected? Beginning in 2013, P-Lot and G-Lot will become sport specific parking lots, meaning you will have an assigned space in which you must park. Spaces will be selected by the donor in order of Duke Club ranking. A donor may still receive a Reparking Exemption for these lots. For example, because the minimum gift requirement for P-Lot is the Silver Level ($500), a donor makes give at the Gold Level ($1,000)

or above will be guaranteed a parking spot in P-Lot. Their specific spot will be selected in by the donor in order of their Duke Club ranking. Is it possible to select my parking with a group of other donors? Yes. As with reseating, a donor may opt to park with other donors. The individual with the lowest ranking determines the group’s selection time. I park in C4 or D2. What will happen with my parking? Reparking applies to all season ticket holders, so everyone will be assigned a reparking selection time. At this time, C4 and D2 are not at capacity and do not have assigned spaces. Therefore, a donor’s parking in 2013 will be exactly the same as in recent years. However, a reparking appointment time will allow all donors the opportunity to see what is available, and improve their parking if they choose.

Downtown Dining Alliance Football Hospitality Tent Bluestone Level ($1,500) benefit in 2013

The Downtown Dining Alliance Hospitality Tent, which provides complimentary food and beverage to Duke Club members at home football games, will be accessible to donors at the Bluestone Level ($1,500) and above beginning in 2013. Since 2009, the tent has required a Gold Level ($1,000) gift for access. The increase reflects a growing number of Duke Club members accessing the tent. Last year the DDA served an average of 900 attendees per game. “In the last three years, our per game attendance in the tent has grown roughly 65%,” said Brian Powell, Director of the Annual Fund. “We have nearly 1,000 more season tickets that qualify for access than we did in 2009. When you couple that fact with the outstanding level of quality the Downtown Dining Alliance has provided, there are now a lot more people coming. We are maxed out of room for patrons.” Men’s and women’s basketball hospitality will be unaffected. Donors at the Bluestone Level ($1500) receive access to pre-game and half-time hospitality at the JMU Convocation Center during men’s and women’s basketball games. The hospitality room features complimentary food and beverages.

15 | Major Gifts

Major Gifts In addition to your annual Duke Club gift there are additional ways to support JMU Athletics in meaningful ways. Whether your interest is in capital projects, an ultimate gift through your estate, or in providing support in perpetuity to student-athletes through an endowment there are a variety of options for your consideration.

For more information about any of the following areas please contact:

Kevin Weaver

Director of Major Gifts weaverkk@jmu.edu | 540-568-3271

Major & Capital Gifts | 16

Legacy Gifts to JMU Athletics

Capital Gifts The ability to contribute to the enhancement of JMU Athletics facilities continues to exist. Private gifts to any of the recently completed projects like University Park, Veterans Memorial Stadium, or Bridgeforth Stadium support our student-athletes by helping provide them with premier facilities. Opportunities exist to recognize donors at each of these facilities and will demonstrate to others your commitment to and support of the athletic facilities at JMU.

Endowment Opportunities Endowment gifts ensure that your gift will benefit our studentathletes in perpetuity. Gifts designated for a student-athlete scholarship, a specific team or program, or to the Athletics General Endowment will provide the long-term support of JMU student-athletes in their quest for championships.

Opportunities to support JMU Athletics exist beyond making annual, unrestricted gifts to the Duke Club or giving to specific capital projects or endowments. The ability to create a legacy of giving exists by supporting JMU through a deferred gift. Making a gift through an estate plan can have favorable tax implications as well as helping to ensure long-term support for JMU Athletics.

Duke Dog Plaza Your opportunity to show your love for Duke Dog exists by purchasing a brick to be placed around the Duke Dog statue in front of the Plecker Center. Bricks (4”x8”) and pavers (8”x8”) are available for purchase through the Duke Club. Each engraved brick is a permanent display of your support for JMU Athletics. For more information on buying a brick, please contact the Duke Club office or visit www.jmusports.com To discuss any of these options for support and how gifts may be beneficial to your long-term interests in addition to providing meaningful support for JMU Athletics, please contact Kevin Weaver at weaverkk@jmu.edu.

17 | Priority Points, Benefits & Payment Methods

Priority Points Priority points are accumulated through your support of the Duke Club and JMU Athletics. Your priority point ranking is used when assigning tickets and parking, including away games and post-season events. A current year annual gift is required to activate your Priority Points. Priority points are calculated as follows: Annual Pledge .08 points X current annual pledge(s) Failure to pay 50% of your current year pledge by the priority deadline may result in an immediate loss of priority parking and seating.

Consecutive Years as a Member Consecutive years giving x 5

Lifetime Giving .02 points X total lifetime athletics gifts, excluding the current year

Returned Tickets 1 point per game for returned tickets (two tickets per game minimum)

Benefits

Season Tickets 1 point for each season ticket
