2008 PLAYOFFS XX JMU 38, Wofford 35 Nov. 29, 2008 – Harrisonburg, Va. Rodney Landers accounted for 292 yards and four touchdowns, including the game winner. He ran for 166 yards and a touchdown and threw for 126 yards and three scores. His scoring run with 3:21 left gave JMU a 38-28 lead after JMU stopped Wofford. Leading 31-28, JMU stopped Dane Romero on fourth and six from the JMU 45. Landers responded by leading a 10-play, 65-yard drive, consisting only of runs by Landers and Eugene Holloman and capped by a six-yard Landers push. WC came back with a 14-play, 56-yard drive with Mike Rucker scoring on a 12-yard run. However, JMU’S Bosco Williams covered the onside kick to seal JMU’s win. WC took its only lead on a two-yard Romero run in the first quarter after a nine-play, 78-yard drive. The rushing score was Romero’s first of four in the game. JMU responded with Holloman scoring on a 34-yard run to cap a seven-play, 62-yard drive. The Dukes took their first lead on a 15-yard pass from Landers to Rockeed McCarter, but WC tied the score on a 12play drive with Romero scoring from the 11. JMU answered with a 27-yard scoring pass from Landers to Williams to end a drive set up by a 37-yard Scotty McGee kickoff return. Just before the half JMU drove 92 yards. Rodney Landers scored on a one-yard run with 1:38 left to give JMU the win. Villanova took its only lead, 27-24, on a 13-yard pass from Matthew Szczur to Stephen Pimm with 6:54 left, but Landers led an 11-play, 54-yard JMU drive in 5:16. The series included a 22-yard Griff Yancey rush on fourth and two at the VU 46. VU then took over on its 20 and drove 21 yards before a Marcus Haywood interception. Landers ran 26 times for 143 yards and hit on 14 of 20 passes for 157 yards and three scores. JMU tied its team record with its 12th straight win, and Arthur Moats led JMU’s defense with 11 tackles, including 3.5 sacks. JMU took a 14-0 lead with Mike Caussin and Bosco Williams catching scoring passes on drives of 70 and 40 yards. VU then drove 60 yards in just four plays for a touchdown by Louis Adeyemi at 13:38 of the second quarter. Most of the yards came on a third and long pass for 59 yards from Whitney to Szczur. VU used a fumble to drive 36 yards in eight plays, tying the game on a two-yard Szczur run with 0:37 left in the half. JMU on the first series of the final half drove 77 yards with the go-ahead score coming on a 30-yard pass from Landers to Kirby Long. Montana 35, JMU 27 Dec. 12, 2008 – Harrisonburg, Va. Montana forced four turnovers and held off a late JMU drive in the FCS semifinals. Turnovers made a difference as JMU fumbled twice on kickoff returns to set up a short field for UM. The Dukes also fumbled once and threw an interception on drives within scoring range. Montana led 14-10 at the half and built its edge to 35-17 with 1:06 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing JMU series, JMU drove 62 yards to the UM one but couldn’t score. The Dukes got a safety on the next series when a UM punt snap sailed through the end zone. JMU took possession after the free kick with 8:22 left and drove 57 yards in six plays with Drew Dudzik scoring on an 18-yard run and adding a two-point conversion run to get the Dukes within 35-27. JMU took over on its seven with 2:06 left after stopping UM. The Dukes reached the UM 49 and then had a 14-yard completion. The second-down pass play, however, was nullified by penalty, and JMU then threw three incompletions. JMU got a 32-yard Dave Stannard field goal on the first series, but UM responded with a 62-yard drive for a 7-3 lead and didn’t trail again. The UM lead went to 14-3 two plays and 15 yards after JMU fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and UM had a 34-yard third-quarter touchdown driving after scoring on the half’s initial series and again recovering JMU fumble on a kickoff.
