Sean O’Regan Year at JMU: Fifth Alma Mater: James Madison ‘03

A former JMU men’s basketball team manager, assistant coach Sean O’Regan (JMU ’03) returned to his alma mater in the summer of 2007. Enthusiastic about teaching, he loves to watch game film with the players and work with them to improve their overall game. In his last two seasons at JMU, the Dukes have won two Colonial Athletic Association championships and played in two NCAA Tournaments. O’Regan is responsible for the guards’ play and development, the Dukes’ playing schedule and coordinating the scouting of opponents.

O’Regan came to JMU from the University of Evansville, where he was an assistant men’s basketball coach from 2005-07. He coached three players who have since gone on to play professionally in Europe. They include Matt Webster (playing in France), an All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree (2006-07), Bradley Strickland (The Netherlands) and Arturs Stalbergs (Latvia). Among the players he helped recruit and coach were Jason Holsinger and Shyron Ely. Holsinger was selected to the MVC AllFreshman team (2005-06), set Evansville’s freshman scoring record and eventually was voted the AAA Scholar Athlete of the Year (2008-09). Ely was also selected to the MVC All-Freshman team (2005-06) and was named first team AllMVC and was runner-up for Player of the Year in the MVC (2008-09).

O’Regan was at Evansville for four seasons, the first two as director of operations. During his time as the director of operations, he served as the academic liaison and was responsible for running all summer basketball camps as well as team travel, film exchange, hiring and managing the team’s managers, and ordering and distributing equipment. The Montpelier, Vt., native holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a concentration in sports management. His wife, the former Cara Campo, handles marketing and graphic design for a Bostonbased entertainment firm. Sean and Cara are parents of a son, Liam, born in October 2009.

Lindsay Smith Year at JMU: Third Alma Mater: Appalachian State ‘05

Assistant coach Lindsay Smith joined the Dukes’ staff in June 2009. She works with the post players and is the team’s recruiting coordinator. In her two seasons at JMU, the Dukes have won two Colonial Athletic Association championships and played in two NCAA Tournaments. Smith came to JMU from Appalachian State, where she was an assistant coach for three years. At Appalachian State, Smith was the recruiting coordinator and was in charge of developing the team’s guards.

Smith also has coached both high school and AAU basketball. In 2005-06 she was an assistant coach at T. Wingate Andrews High School in High Point, N.C., and also coached the under-16 AAU elite Team Phoenix during that time. A 2005 graduate of Appalachian State, Smith was a four-year starter and 1,000-point career scorer for the Mountaineers. She ranks 14th among ASU’s all-time scorers with 1,076 career points and holds the school record for career three-pointers (177). She was a team co-captain in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and was the team’s assist leader both of those seasons. Smith, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., was an all-conference, all-area, all-region and AllNorthwest honoree at Ledford High School.

She was selected the conference Player of the Year as a senior. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in health promotions from Appalachian State. She is also a 2011 graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy.
