The exhibition “How German is it?” consciously chooses a subjective approach to the theme. In selecting the artists, we took into consideration primarily those who live or have lived in Germany and whose work addresses key aspects of their perceptions in and of Germany. Some of them work from autobiographical material, while others choose a rhetorical, encrypted form. Several of the artists address the consequences of National Socialism and genocide, key factors in the sense of national identity in the Federal Republic of Germany. Interestingly, many of the artists feel called upon to confront the traditional metaphors of the national state, exploring language, folk art, myths, music and geography. Religion and customs readdressed as forms of self-affirmation, memories of childhood and youth, or as ironic commentaries on the pressures of social expectation. Artists from immigrant families articulate their migration experiences and subversively undermine stereotypical attributions. We commissioned several artists including Julian Rosefeldt, Via Lewandowsky and Durs Grünbein, Anny and Sibel Öztürk, Misha Shenbrot, Lilli Engel and Raffael Rheinsberg, as well as the musician Paul Brody and asked them to think about what a collective identity might be in a society whose national emblems and symbols have been contaminated through National Socialism and can no longer be cited ingenuously.

Wie jedoch verweben Zugewanderte ihre mitgebrachte Lebenskultur mit einer für sie neuen Realität? Wie verändert Zuwanderung sowohl Migranten als auch Einheimische? Als jüdisches Museum greifen wir damit Fragen auf, die zu den Kernthemen unseres Hauses gehören – und wenn ein Museum solchen Themen nachgeht, sucht es Beispiele aus der visuellen Kultur. Was lag also näher, als sich bei Künstlern umzuschauen? Die Ausstellung „Heimatkunde“ wählt bewusst einen subjektiven Zugang zum Thema. Bei der Auswahl der Künstler wurden in erster Linie jene berücksichtigt, die in Deutschland leben oder gelebt haben und die in ihrem Werk zentrale Aspekte ihrer Wahrnehmungen in und von Deutschland thematisieren. Manche von ihnen greifen autobiografische Aspekte auf, andere wählen eine rhetorische, verschlüsselte Form. Einige der Künstler setzen sich mit den Folgen des Nationalsozialismus und dem Massenmord auseinander, essentielle Bestandteile des nationalen Selbstverständnisses der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Interessanterweise fühlen sich viele der Künstler aufgefordert, sich mit den traditionellen Metaphern des Nationalstaats zu konfrontieren, mit Merkmalen wie Sprache, Volkskunst, Mythen, Musik und Geografie.
