funny thing happens whenever a new friend or acquaintance discovers my travel schedule for the first time. They are usually stunned to learn that, in any given year, I’m bouncing back and forth between five continents—overseeing medical outreaches, organizing festivals, speaking at conferences, and ministering before groups and congregations. They often say something like, “Wow, Jonathan, it seems like you’re always going.” Well, it seems that way to me, too. I am on the move a lot. But so are many of the other members of our dedicated staff. There’s a reason for that. If you were to condense Yeshua’s final instructions to His disciples down to a single word, it would surely be a simple two-letter command: “Go.” In his article titled “Witness-

ing: The Mega-Mitzvah” in this issue of JVT, John Garr mentions Yeshua’s “Great Commission” mandate, or mitzvah, to “go” into all the world. There are essentially three overarching reasons we are doing everything in our power to carry the Good News of Yeshua ( Jesus) to every Jewish heart on planet Earth right now. This is why we “go.”

1. WE GO BECAUSE OUR KING COMMANDED IT.

Do you recall Yeshua’s Parable of the Wedding Feast recorded in Matthew 22? In it He described a king who was hosting a wedding feast for his son. You don’t have to be a theologian with a string of degrees to discern whom the “king” and “son” symbolize in this allegory.

In the parable, the king is initially disappointed at the level of response to his invitation to the feast. So, he eventually directs his messengers to: “‘Go into the highways and byways, and invite everyone you find to the wedding feast’” (Matthew 22:9 TLV). There’s that key word—“go”—again. Yeshua’s final instructions before ascending to Heaven included these words: “ . . . and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and through all Judah, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” —Acts 1:8 TLV

Implicit in this directive is a strategy that corresponds perfectly with the apostle Paul’s “to the Jew first and also to the Nations” mandate (Romans 1:16) that I quote so frequently. That mandate represents the heart of the mission of Jewish Voice.

2. WE GO BECAUSE TIME IS SHORT.

We certainly don’t pretend to know the precise timing of the Bridegroom’s return for His Bride or of that glorious “wedding feast.” But we can discern from the signs around us that the time is rapidly approaching. If we are indeed living in the Last Days, and I’m convinced we are, then a very important window of opportunity for reaching the Jewish People is closing. We are filled with a powerful sense of urgency but also excitement. Precisely because time is short, the harvest fields are ripe. Jewish hearts have never been more receptive. The Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) is moving among God’s ancient covenant People.

3. WE GO BECAUSE OF GOD’S PROMISES.

I suspect you are aware of God’s promise to Abraham concerning his descendants: “I will bless those who bless you . . . ” (Genesis 12:3 NIV). Well, this promise is true. One of the surest paths to blessing in God’s order of things is to bless the Jewish People. This certainly involves helping meet the material, physical needs of oppressed Jews and standing with them against the rising tide of anti-Semitism. Nevertheless, the greatest blessing we can possibly bestow upon a Jewish person is an introduction to Yeshua HaMashiach—the promised Messiah, Jesus. But there is another group we, as followers of Yeshua, are exhorted to bless and care for—our fellow Believers. As Paul instructed: Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. —Galatians 6:10 NIV

Scripture repeatedly assures us that blessing will flow into the life of one who extends a hand of compassion toward suffering followers of Yeshua. (See 2 Corinthians 9 and Philippians 4:10-19.) Finally, there is a third group of people that Scripture repeatedly exhorts us to “go” help—invariably reminding us to expect heavenly blessing and favor for doing so. I’m referring to widows, orphans, the poor, and the oppressed. Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done. —Proverbs 19:17 NIV In a similar vein, Proverbs 28:27 (NIV) declares: Those who give to the poor will lack nothing . . . (See also Proverbs 22:9.) Here we have three groups of people that you and I have a clear biblical mandate to help and bless. These are three kinds of people who, when we extend a hand of compassion to them, God smiles and Heaven’s windows open. What I want you to note is that the ongoing outreaches of Jewish Voice to the scattered Tribes of Israel in Africa and elsewhere fulfill all three of these biblical mandates at once! 1. These communities identify as Jews—often suffering persecution and neglect as a result. 2. Many of these people have embraced Yeshua as Messiah, and more will do so as we share the truth with them. They are our brothers and sisters in the faith. They, too, suffer persecution. 3. The precious people we will minister to are all desperately poor and are suffering needlessly—many of them widows or abandoned women and their little ones. In other words, this triple intersection of need presents an opportunity for you and me to experience a threefold spiritual blessing. I wish you could be with me on one of these trips. You’d see the desperation in the eyes of these lovely people. And you’d sense the spiritual importance of what we’re doing there—the triple importance! You would sense Heaven smiling at every act of kindness, comfort, and care. Jewish Voice urgently needs medical personnel and others who understand these three reasons why we “go” to participate in our 2016 outreaches. Perhaps you or someone you know should be one of these who will “Be His Voice.” Of course, some can “go.” But the rest can “send.” Your gifts of support allow you to “go” and “Be His Voice” to others from wherever you are today. We go because our King commanded it. We go because time is short. We go because there’s blessing in it for everyone involved. Go with us!

Bring the POWER of the GOSPEL to the JEW and to the NATIONS

magine that your passport is ready, your bags are packed, and you’re a little anxious about going on your first outreach with Jewish Voice Ministries to “Be His Voice.” While it is humbling to accept being His hands and feet, you are amazed to find that He directs your steps. Proverbs 3:5-6 says to Trust in Adonai with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight (NIV). You may be asking, “What is it like to be in the remote depths of African poverty?” The answer might surprise you. With all of the distractions of civil development stripped away . . . the cars, the electricity, technology, running water, etc., not to mention the bills, responsibilities, and the rush of daily demands . . . there is nothing but raw dependence on Adonai Yireh (God our Provider) to show up and meet the needs of the precious souls that have walked (and some carted) for miles to receive a miracle.

A Day Not Forgotten I answered God’s call to go on the Medical Outreach in July to nurse hundreds of men, women, and children to health (most of which had never seen a physician) from the Lemba Tribe. There were so many moments I can recall of God’s voice proclaiming Shalom over His children. During a full morning of treating wounds, as I was finishing placing a dressing on a small girl in our African emergency room, this little girl’s mother, overwhelmed with gratitude, repeatedly thanked me. “Please come back. Come

back every year. We need you. Our children get sick and we can do nothing for them. Thank you so much! Thank you!” Shortly after, another little girl shed big tears when I had to insert the needle to infuse her with IV antibiotics. But a few moments later she began smiling. Her mother assured me: “She is so happy! She is so happy you are here and can help her get well!” I often forget the impact the simplest care can make for these desperate people. I was quickly reminded that they don’t have anything at all with which to treat what we would consider a minor

medical condition. In their African world, when a small wound becomes infected, limbs (even lives) are lost. In their African world, even a mild fever can lead to dehydration and become a life-threatening condition for an already compromised and malnourished baby. This is a different world they live in. All throughout the day, patients lined the corridor. Some had even camped overnight in an open field and waited all day in line to be treated. One patient I treated still stands out to me . . .  I brought an elderly woman named Joyce into the treatment room and asked October/November/December 2015 | 7

her, “What brings you here today?” She lifted up her dress to reveal a baseballsized lesion on her knee. “How long have you suffered with this?” I asked her. “20 years,” she answered. Our surgeon took a look and prepared the site for surgery . . . Betadine, sterile gloves, anesthetic, suture . . . all the supplies he needed made available by our team. The surgery was simple and completed quickly. I dressed the wound and provided crutches for her. She could not contain the joy she felt. One of the Zimbabwean nurses working with me commented, “She will not forget this day.” No . . . she will not forget this day. Nor will I. I won’t forget how 20 years ago . . . when Joyce’s knee was beginning to grow . . . I made a decision to quit a job that I loved and left all that was familiar to me to devote my life to this very work: Serving Jesus in developing nations. As I went to school every day as a child, I didn’t realize that children in other parts of the world would have given anything to spend a day in the classes I attended.

As the winter storm raged outside my home and I kept cozy and warm inside, I didn’t think of the children in the cold who had no shelter from their storms. When I refused to wear my clothes that were no longer stylish, I didn’t consider the children wearing filthy rags every day to simply cover their bodies. While I was drinking clean water, I didn’t pic-

ture in my mind the long line at the well where mothers would hope to gather dirty water for their families to drink. As warm food filled my stomach, I didn’t know there was a little girl who could only dream of when she would eat her next meal as her stomach groaned from hunger. If I got sick or hurt, I knew I could go to the doctor. It didn’t occur to me that people like Joyce would have to wait 20 years to do the same. No . . . Joyce will not forget this day . . . the day she was relieved of 20 years of suffering in less than an hour. And, I will not forget this day . . . for I am reminded, once again, of just how much God has given me. How grateful I am that for the last 20 years I have been able to come back every year to the places the Lord has led me. ISRAEL’S PRIESTLY CALLING Bringing Salvation to the Nations By Kevin Geoffrey

Sharing the Messiah with Jewish People means more than simply the salvation of individual Jewish souls, or even the restoration of an entire Jewish Nation. Indeed, proclaiming Yeshua (Jesus) to the Jewish People is necessary for the salvation of the world!

ithin the Nation of Israel (laer'f.yI, Yis’rael), God established an order of separateness. This order establishes an increasing closeness and responsibility of service to God Himself. First, the Nation of Israel is, itself, a people set apart by God from among all the other Nations. Then, inside Israel, God set apart the tribe of Levi (ywIle, Leviy), who would not receive a land inheritance along with the other Tribes, but whose inheritance would be God Himself. The Levites (~YIwIl., L’viyim) would be responsible for the maintenance of the tabernacle (!K'v.Mih;, HaMish’kan) and all the holy things related to God’s service. Finally, from out of the Tribe of Levi, God set apart the line of Aaron (!Arh]a;, A’haron, the brother of Moses) to serve God as priests (~ynIh]Ko, kohaniym). The priests would be the intercessors and interpreters of God’s Word and will for all the rest of the people of Israel. They bridged the gap between Israel and God. And yet, this arrangement would not merely serve as the means by which the people of Israel would gain access to God. It would also serve as the pattern by which the God of Israel would become accessible to the people of the Nations.

In Exodus 19:5-6, God says to Israel, “Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession (hL'gUs., s’gulah) among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests (~ynIh]Ko tk,l,m.m;, mam’lechet ko’haniym) and a holy nation (vAdq' yAg, goy qadosh).” These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel. This passage establishes three important things. First, the people of Israel—the Jewish People—belong to God in a way that is unique and different from all the other people groups of the world. Second, as His hL'gUs., s’gulah—His own possession—God set Israel apart so that they could be holy—vAdq', qadosh—to their God. But holiness is not Israel’s final goal. The most crucial point here is that there is an ultimate purpose for Israel’s holiness, and God tells them so. It is so that Israel “shall be to Me a kingdom of priests (~ynIh]Ko tk,l,m.m;, October/November/December 2015 | 9

ISRAEL’S PRIESTLY CALLING Bringing Salvation to the Nations By Kevin Geoffrey

mam’lechet ko’haniym).” Israel’s holy purpose to the Nations mirrors the priests’ holy purpose to Israel. Just as the priests of Israel perform the holy service of mediation and reconciliation to God on behalf of all the people of Israel, in the same way, the Jewish Nation is meant to collectively perform that same service on behalf of every other Nation of the Earth! This is exactly what Paul asserts in Acts 13:47, when he cites Isaiah 49:6 as a command given to the Jewish People: “I have placed you as a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation (h['Wvy>, y’shuah) to the end of the earth.” From the beginning (see Genesis 12:1-3), it has been God’s intent and design for Israel to be His uniquely called intermediaries. Is has been, and continues to be, Israel’s job to be the voice that brings global reconciliation between God and all mankind. Yeshua’s ultimate and perfect service as High Priest did not make Israel’s national priestly service useless and obsolete. On the contrary, Yeshua’s work provides the Jewish People with the spiritual means and ability to finally accomplish their collective mission and purpose. The salvation of Jewish People is not simply about reconciling the Children of Israel with their God—it is about restoring the Remnant of Israel to her birthright and priestly mandate. Israel’s national salvation is the difference between the occasional salvation of individuals from time

to time, and the massive once-and-for-all resurrectionpower revival for the entire human race! When you lift your voice to proclaim the Good News of Yeshua to Jewish People, the reason is not just to see individual Jewish persons saved. It is also so that the Jewish People as a restored, holy Nation and priestly kingdom in Yeshua may find their voice, and in turn be “a light for the Gentiles” and “life from the dead” for the world. I say then, they [Israel, the Jewish People] did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! . . . For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? THE PRIORITY OF DIRECT JEWISH EVANGELISM By David Brickner

standing tradition of unbelief in Yeshua, and often view with contempt those who seek to share the Gospel. The discomfort of being vulnerable and the pain of rejection that necessarily accompanies effective Jewish evangelism can take their toll if not handled properly. If we don’t keep that vulnerability, that pain, in perspective, the natural desire to avoid them can slowly erode any commitment to direct evangelism. We need to keep ourselves visible, vulnerable, and available so that Jewish People might hear the message of the Gospel. Another reason why it is difficult to maintain the priority of Jewish evangelism is the fact that there are so many distractions. Whether it be tours to the Holy Land, prophecy conferences, or attempting to win support for the State of Israel, there are many worthy endeavors that simply do not add up to Jewish evangelism. No one committed to Jewish evangelism can afford to take on these endeavors at the price of neglecting to speak directly to the unsaved. Please note that I use the word “direct” in describing Jewish evange-

lism as a priority. This is important because many activities that pass for witnessing have very little to do with evangelism. Perhaps the most distressing example of this regards a program about which I continually receive inquiries: On Wings of Eagles by the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. Their stated purpose is to help Jews emigrate to Israel from the Former Soviet Union. Many well-meaning Christians who give to this organization think they are supporting Jewish missions. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. The organization uses the word “Christians” in its title, but it is run by a rabbi who is dead set against evangelizing the Jewish People. This organization not only doesn’t do evangelism, but it also works hard to make sure that those who are most open to the Gospel are prevented from hearing the Good News. Recently, I heard about a “Jewish mission” in Europe whose sole activity involved buying goods from Israel and selling them in churches. They quote from Genesis 12:3 (NASB) “I will bless those who bless you . . .” and

believe that they are “blessing Israel” economically through this arrangement. They might indeed be providing some kind of blessing, but it isn’t missions, and it isn’t evangelism. Yeshua said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15 NKJV). Direct evangelism occurs when there is a clear presentation of the facts of the Gospel to the unsaved and an urgent appeal to receive salvation through faith in Messiah. This is the best and only hope for my Jewish People, indeed for all people everywhere. The most loving thing you can do for my Jewish People is to share with them the Good News of the Gospel.

Jonathan Bernis invited me to serve the Lemba Tribe during the Medical Outreach, July 29–August 8, 2015, alongside about 50 other partners from a variety of backgrounds. Some served in front-line management, others administered medical care and pharmaceutical distribution, while a dozen others shared the Good News and healing touch of Yeshua HaMashiach (Messiah, Jesus). Everyone witnessed the supernatural ministering of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) in healings, administration, salvations, and baptisms. On Wednesday of that week, one of our partners, Yvonne, called me over to meet a man who miraculously received his hearing. He was so excited to hear his own voice; he repeated everything Yvonne was saying without understanding the English he was speaking. After returning to Jewish Voice headquarters in Phoenix, my phone rang with a call from Portland, Oregon. Mr. Calvin Ott, a partner of Jewish Voice Ministries, asked if I’d witnessed a man receive his hearing. When I asked him how he knew, he explained, “I specifically prayed that deaf ears would be opened and that you would personally witness the gift from God received.” Yvonne and Calvin truly answered the call to “Be His Voice.” —David Blakeslee, Jewish Voice Representative I am a retired NCIS Officer and I had the privilege of working the front gate where nearly 11,000 people lined up to receive medical attention. It was my job to make sure that each person in line made it to where they needed to so they could receive the care they so desperately needed. I was humbled by how many people showed up and how many needs we were able to meet. During the return trip, when the outreach was completed, there was a mechanical failure with the trailer containing our luggage and supplies 229 kilometers (140 miles) from the capital of Zimbabwe. We commissioned a passerby who was eager to employ their cargo truck and transport our luggage and supplies. I volunteered to ride with the driver. As I was riding with him, I discovered that he had other plans, but thankfully, because of my experience and influence, our luggage made it safely back. You never know how God’s going to use you. e are approaching the celebration of the greatest gift God ever offered. I am referring, of course, to the birth of our Savior the Lord Jesus. Through this gift, all mankind can receive forgiveness and fullness in this lifetime, as well as eternal life. God so loved all of us that He not only offered grace through this Child, but life through the sacrificial death and glorious resurrection of His only begotten Son. God is love and, without a doubt, love is expressed in giving. Jesus said, “‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35 NIV). I can testify, along with my wife Betty and the thousands of supporters of LIFE Outreach, that giving and sharing God’s love is the most meaningful experience we can have on this earth—truly, the joy of giving to live and living to give. Over and over, people tell me that they have found the statement I often make on television, “If you want to live life fully, express life freely,” to be true beyond words. And remember, the “ministry of giving” is not limited to money alone. It can be expressed by caring, giving time or attention, a listening ear, or a shoulder to lean on. Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount that where your treasure is, your heart is also (see Matthew 6:21). There is no question that legitimate self-interest is totally appropriate and very important. I am not referencing selfish interests, but concern about life’s issues that matter to us and to our families. Beyond this legitimate and necessary interest, however, comes the importance of similar interest in the well-being of others. This is the only realistic way to deal with the problem of greed. When we are controlled by our own selfseeking, self-serving desire for personal gratification with little thought for others, we are dealing with a problem that only God can enable us to overcome. When we are freed from this unhealthy self-focus, we will begin to notice and care about others. If we have God’s interest at heart, we are going to care about others. We are going to be committed to His Kingdom purpose and allow His will to be revealed to us and through us so that others may see the reality of God’s love and His interest in their well-being. He wants everyone to know Him as their Father. The apostle Paul encouraged the Corinthian church in the area of generosity. These words of encouragement followed a stern reprimand calling them to godliness and true holiness and away from the fleshly carnality and negative tendencies of the world. They were surrounded by idolatrous practices and godless beliefs. Paul inspired them by exemplifying the churches in Macedonia. These were the Christians that supported Paul’s mission outreaches when no others did, and he commended them with these words: They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity. For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will. They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem. They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do (2 Corinthians 8:2-5, NLT). Think about it. They noticed. They literally begged for the privilege of sharing with other Believers, and they saw the needs of others through the eyes of Jesus. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to finish this “ministry of giving.” He complimented them on their gifted speakers, their knowledge, their enthusiasm, and their love, but he also said, I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7 NLT). When asked to sign someone’s Bible or a book, I put a Scripture reference under my name from 2 Corinthians 8:9, You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. 20 | JewishVoiceToday.org • 1-888-921-4582

I began referring people to that verse when I was still a student in college and preaching in various churches. I wanted everyone to read this powerful message. God expressed His love by giving His best—His only Son. Jesus, being one with God and seated at the right hand of God, left all of Heaven, came to Earth, and spilled out His life in order that we might have life. Through His sacrifice, through His love, through His gift, we can experience life and joyfully begin sharing it with others. Paul went on to tell the Corinthian Believers that he wanted them to understand the importance of the “ministry of giving” (see 2 Corinthians 8:6). Then he challenged them to make willing gifts, not one that is given grudgingly, and encouraged them that God loves a cheerful giver (see 2 Corinthians 9:5-7). He also followed that statement with a great promise from our Heavenly Father: And God will generously provide all you need [not necessarily all we want, but all we need]. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others (2 Corinthians 9:8 NLT). Once again, Paul is pointing beyond our own legitimate interest to the importance of caring about others. Paul then shared in 2 Corinthians 9:9 a promise from Psalm 112:9, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever” (NLT). And then he went on inspiring the Corinthian Believers, reminding them that, For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous (2 Corinthians 9:10-11 NLT). Then he referenced the “ministry of giving” again, pointing to the positive effect we can have on others: So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers . . . will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God. As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God (2 Corinthians 9:12-13 NLT, emphasis added). The “ministry of giving” not only meets the needs of others, but God says because of it, He promises to meet our needs. As a result of living to give and giving to live, we will be glorifying God through our lives, and others will give God glory because we have shared real life and true love with them. It is the “ministry of giving” that I have experienced through the ministry I am privileged to be a part of, LIFE Outreach International. My wife Betty and I, along with our partners, have rejoiced in helping others around the world for over the last 30 years. We have together shared God’s love not just “in word, but in deed.” It has been the extended hands of compassion revealing the love of God. Just as with the churches of Macedonia and the New Testament Believers in Corinth, the members of the family of faith have been sharing the greatest gift known to man, and

that is life itself through Jesus our Lord. When people see God’s love expressed through Believers, their hearts are opened to welcome this love in their own lives. When you face personal challenges in your own life, may I suggest you diligently seek to help someone else deal with the challenges in their life? WITNESSING: THE MEGA-MITZVAH By John D. Garr, Ph.D.

or everyone who believes in Yeshua ( Jesus) as Messiah and Lord, there is a Mega-Mitzvah that is essential to the perpetuation of our faith. (A mitzvah is commandment of God.) This commandment came from the lips of Yeshua Himself shortly before He ascended into heaven: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations . . .” (Matthew 28:19 NASB). This Great Commission was followed up by Yeshua’s instructions to His disciples: “. . . you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:8 NASB). Being a witness and bearing witness to the faith that one has received from the Messiah is, therefore, an essential part of the life of every Believer.

ISRAEL: GOD’S WITNESSING COMMUNITY Like most other elements of our faith, this command has Jewish roots! Here is what God commanded His Chosen People: “It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, and there was no strange god among you; so you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And I am God” (Isaiah 43:12 NASB). God further said to Isaiah, “‘And you are My witnesses. Is there any God besides Me . . . I know of none’” (Isaiah 44:8 NASB). In a very real sense, Israel also kept the MegaMitzvah by living and demonstrating their faith in the one and only God, the God of Scripture. How did ancient Israel bear witness to the one true God? First, they did so by dynamic modeling in which they demonstrated to the non-Jewish world what it meant to obey

God’s instructions contained in the Hebrew Scriptures and to receive the abundance of God’s blessings for having done so. Second, Israel witnessed to the world by making succinct affirmations of faith during their exercises of corporate worship and prayer and in their public testimony to their faith. By far the most important of these affirmations was the Shema: “Shema, Yisrael, Adonai Elohenu, Adonai Echad” [“HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE”]. These six Hebrew words contain the very foundation of the faith of Israel and the New Covenant Messianic Community. Yeshua Himself affirmed this truth in Mark 12:29. The Shema, along with the commandment in verse 30 that follows: “‘AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH’” (NASB) is the “first” and most important commandment in the Torah. It is the foundation of monotheism, the one truth that separates Jews, Judaism, Christians, and Christianity from all the other people and religions in the world.

BEING WITNESSES

One of the core understandings about witnessing to the faith of God and of the Messiah is that witness is a state of being before it is an activity. Listen to the words of Yeshua: “Ye shall be witnesses unto me . . .” (Acts 1:8 KJV, emphasis added). These are the same words that God said to Israel in Isaiah 43:10, “You are My witnesses . . .” (NASB). This simOctober/November/December 2015 | 23

ple understanding underscores the fact that the most important witness that one can give to his faith is by being faithful to the truth that the faith represents. Bearing witness to God and the Messiah requires one to be distinct from the world around him. This is why God said to Israel, The Lord shall establish you as his holy [kadosh—“set apart”] people to himself (Deuteronomy 28:9 TNK). Paul, the Jewish rabbi and Christian apostle, expanded on this foundation of truth: “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing . . .” (2 Corinthians 6:17 NIV). When Believers are “holy unto the Lord,” their lifestyles stand out. Here is what Paul said about God’s holy (set apart) people: . . . you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world (Philippians 2:15 NASB). One’s spoken witness to the faith of Yeshua is only as powerful as one’s living witness in which he dynamically models the Word of God in his own life. This is what Yeshua meant when He said, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 NASB). It is not what one says about what he believes that impacts unbelievers. It is what one does about what he believes! While faith is important, good works become the powerful witness that transforms living faith into testimony to Messiah as Lord and Savior.

SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE When witnessing has become a state of being for a Believer, then he is equipped to engage in witnessing to the world concerning the Messianic Kingdom. This is what Paul said, The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 2:24-25 NASB). The witnessing disciple must never be arrogant but must always speak the truth in love (see Ephesians 4:15). This is an evident core principle of witness, as God through Yeshua designed it: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him” ( John 3:16-17 NASB). When one is empowered by the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) to bear witness to the truth by speaking the authoritative Word of God, God has promised that His “Word shall not return void” (see Isaiah 55:11). It is important, therefore, to speak God’s Word of faith (not pious platitudes), For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword . . . it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12 NIV). The Holy-Spiritinspired witness of the Word will “convict the world concerning sin and righteousness” (see John 16:8). Then, the Ruach HaKodesh will “guide you into all the truth” (see John 16:13). Witnessing in love proves that one is a disciple

of the Messiah (see John 13:35). When the word of the witnessing disciple is the Word of God, it will accomplish God’s purpose of convicting, leading, and empowering those who have not heard the Good News to commit their ways to the Lord and trust in Him, believing on the Messiah for eternal life.

SHARING THE GOOD NEWS Every Believer should be filled with the joy of the Lord and a passion to share the Good News that he has heard. This is the joyful sound: “Yeshua saves!” The importance of confessing and affirming one’s faith in God and in His Son Yeshua is underscored in the words of the Master Himself: “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33 NASB). Being Messianic means being “like the Messiah”; therefore, every Believer should be bold to bear witness to his faith to everyone. Instead sanctify Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, yet with humility and reverence . . .  (1 Peter 3:15-16 TLV). Yeshua commanded believers to “make disciples of the nations” (see Matthew 28:19). The commandment to make disciples, however, was not an innovation on the part of

Yeshua any more than His command to bear witness to Him was. The opening words of the Mishnah (the original written rabbinic commentaries on the Torah) instructed the Jewish People before, during, and since the time of the Messiah to “raise up many disciples” (Pirkei Avot 1.1). Witnessing to God and the Messiah is an ongoing exercise of making disciples. Believing the Good News is only the beginning of a lifelong walk of faith as one becomes a disciple of the Messiah by taking upon himself the easy yoke of the Gospel and walking with God on the narrow road that leads to eternal life (see Matthew 7:14). Everyone on the face of the Earth deserves to hear the Good News (Gospel) of salvation through Messiah Yeshua, the good news that the angel spoke to Joseph and Mary: “. . . you shall call His name Yeshua, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21 TLV). Here is a summation of the Good News: Messiah has died, Messiah is risen, Messiah is coming again! Baruch HaShem (Blessed be God)!

A Bright Message of Hope for the Darkest of Times

am sure I don’t have to tell you that we are living in turbulent times. Simply following the news— whether via the global updates of major news outlets or simply the local newscast—can be an almost overwhelmingly troubling experience these days. My travels to key points of need around the world make me keenly aware that many people are suffering mightily right now. Furthermore, hosting a ministry broadcast that reaches potentially millions of people means also receiving many prayer requests from individuals going through extraordinarily difficult trials.

In the face of all this heartache and need, I recently sensed a powerful prompting from God to deliver a message for these times. It’s a message for you, me, and any person you may know who is enduring hardship or walking through a painful season right now. It is a powerful, prophetic message hiding in plain sight in the familiar words of Jeremiah 29:11:
